The longer the lockout lasts, and Beckles is convinced it will extend deep into August at least, the greater the chance Ruud gets a fat one-year deal from the Bucs, Beckles said today on the Ron and Ian Show on WDAE-AM 620.
Beckles is convinced that third-round pick Mason Foster or any young player relatively new to the Bucs defense could not be successful at middle linebacker without the benefit of a full offseason. Of course, Beckles expalined that Ruud’s performance on film likely would preclude him from getting a fat offfer elsewhere.
“The lockout is the best thing that’s ever happened to him,” Beckles said of Ruud. Without a true offseason, “you gotta do something in house and go with it.”
Beckles went on to explain that Ruud’s value is not in making the the defensive calls. Ronde Barber could handle that, Beckles said, but retaining Ruud in this lockout scenario would simply be valuable because he knows the defense.

Bill Billicheck must not be credible because he never played in the nfl… Trent Dilfer is one of the best analysts and he was a terrible player, so your opinion is flawed.
Beckles has a point and he is correct noone is going to pay Rudd the money he wants after watching his last 2 years of film. His only leverage is that he knows the playbook.

Bill Cowher was an awful player with the awful Browns.
Chucky was a Division-III quarterback.
Mike Tomlin was a serviceable Division 1-AA player who never sniffed the NFL.
Mike McCarthy player for (Dusty) Baker University.
The list goes on and on. One doesn’t have to have been an All Pro player to know football.

Let’s see, are any of those rings Big Ten rings? Nope. He played for Indiana!
Were any of those Super Bowl rings? Nope. He was a glorified turnstile for the Bucs and when he played for the Eagles, he carried Chucky’s water.
I think Ruud has played in more playoff games than Beckles. Maybe that’s why he’s so annoyed with Ruud?

@ BucnAwesome Ian wasn’t a terrible player. He was average. And had an above average career in the NFL in terms of length.

Ian was a very good man as well signed autographs for me many times… H eonce picked my son up in his arms and talked about football with my then 7 year old. Good man he gets my respect!

@ Atrain, How many times you meet a player you love only to find out he’s a Dbag? I have a list of players like a Bo Jackson or a Bob Tewksbury who went out of their way to be a Dbag.
I watched Bo Jackson act like he was coming over to sign kids autographs waiting in the hot sun only when he got 10 feet from us he goes, “You’ll don’t want my autograph, do you?” Then the kids screamed for him and he turned and walked away.
Tewksberry I saw sitting in the stands on a day off from spring training. Some kids noticed who he was. i saw his toss a baseball back at a kid and didn’t sign it.
On the reverse, we all know what Roberto Alomar jr. said to the Ump, made a reference to the ump dead child, but he and brooks Robinson are the nicest Pro athletes I’ve ever met.

Oh yeah John Franco, NY Mets, was the BEST! Straw was hitting BP and hit a frozen rope HR right by me. Franco was running by and i yelled for him. He tosses me the ball and says come see me in 5 mins. He went over to the bullpin and signed everyones autograph and chatted with us. Class act and will never forget it.

Joe can confirm what Chris is saying. Bo Jackson was one of the top five dicks Joe ever dealt with on a “professional” level, only Joe was the one who was professional.
Joe never, ever wants to see an athlete lose his career to an injury, but when Bo Jackass blew out his hip, let’s just say Joe didn’t run to Mass early just so he could light a couple of extra candles.

I bet Rudd gets his money cuz as much as Foster and Mckenzie look like good prospects its different under live fire ( obvioulsy ). Having played Div. II College ball you can play awsome in practice but once your in a game situation its a totally different animal! Franchise him which will A. give him a one year contract with a boatload amount of money B. give another player a chance to learn the defense. Im down for keeping him or letting him go but i trust the front office on this one on whatever they decide to do.

Who were the other 4, Joe? Did you ever meet Dan Marino. I met him once, at players Grill in Orlando. He was an arrogant ass! Was that the norm for him? Or did I see him in a bad night? Walter Payton was truly a gentleman and a class guy. It Was an honor meeting him!

Neil Lomax was one, not so much that he was an arse but because he was such an absolute fraud. A lot of athletes sucked up to the TV crowd and he was one, big time. Once the TV cameras were on, he ALWAYS talked about how he was a “Christian man” and dedicated to his family.
In real life, he always had a blonde, sometimes two, on his arm pounding beers like Joe, not that there’s anything wrong with that, just an absolute two-faced fraud.
And the blonde(s) were not his wife.

I appreciate you assigning motives to my one sentence opinion of Beckles. Travis, it’s R-U-U-D by the way. When the head coach and all of his teammates say he is a solid player, that’s good enough for me. Watching youtube highlights, commenting on message boards and hosting a radio show does not make one an expert either.

I don’t really give a $h!t what happens to Ruud or what Beckles has to say about it. I care more about you guys’ opinion of Ruud than Beckles. He is a real blow hard and being a good player doesn’t make you a good person.

Ian gets no cred from me. He’s a Debbie Downer on everything. He says he’s being honest but I take as being Mr. Negative. With that said I agree the Bucs will need someone that knows the defense and the longer this stupid lockout lasts the less time the new guys will be able to learn and be affective.
Ian lost it for me when he guaranteed the Bucs were trading out of the number 3 spot claiming the owners were too cheap to pay for a 3rd round pick. I wish we could have some true sports talk in the 9-12 hour in this town. These guys give the same updates and spend most time talking about girls racks, food (Ron quit talking with when your mouth is full of food), and birthday challenges. And the same tired jokes. ‘what am I an animal?’. Or my good friend Al Pacino, says never to name drop. Really? They do get an occasional good interview but I’m sure that’s the good work of the producer. Unfortunately I do listen causes it’s the only local show on.
