Pouncey Sends A Signal
April 16th, 2011Players can send smokescreens, too. That fun isn’t only for general managers.
In what could be a smokescreen — or not as draft guru Justin “The Commish” Pawlowski intelligently wrote weeks ago — former Florida guard/center Mike Pouncey fired off a message on Twitter this week that included the Bucs among the teams apparently honing in on him.
@MikePouncey Top 6 teams… Steelers, Patriots, Giants, Cowboys, Dolphins, Bucs
With 2011 free agency a lingering mystery yet to be solved, this year’s draft is a more of a crapshoot to predict than ever before.
Davin Joseph is on his couch without a contract. That makes it conceivable the Bucs draft Pouncey. Unlikely? Sure. But the Bucs are still all about No. 5.

Back after the season ended, I heard Raheem speaking on the radio during an interview…don’t remember which station…could have been 620, 1010 or espn 1040.
Anyway, he said at the time that their number one focus was protecting #5.
To me, at the time, this meant there could be a strong possibility that they take an offensive lineman in the first round.
NOW?
I find myself doubting it. The need for defense is too strong. We have glaring holes there. We need a suitable replacement for Barber…we need Defensive ends. We need LBs. We might even need a replacement for Talib.
We also need a tightend on offense.
I just don’t see us spending a pick on offensive line right now. I could see a free agent (undrafted or otherwise) maybe.
ON A SIDE NOW, JOE
Have you heard anything about Bucs players getting together yet? Normally, wouldn’t there have been an OTA by now? One just before the draft?
We read all about how Freeman was going to get playes together. Over on PFT I have seen players from multiple teams doing so…but have heard nothing on the Bucs. Faine was criticized for saying it wouldn’t happen…and until it does, he is right.
Would love to hear news on this.

“ON A SIDE NOW, JOE” = “On a side note, Joe”

Pouncey wouldn’t be a bad choice IMO… I trust Coach Morris and GM Dominik’s draft choices, they seem to have a good grasp on how to draft…. GO BUCS

Joe,
How come the criticism for Faine isn’t applied to Davin Joseph?? He’s missed plenty of games to injury and has only made 1 pro bowl (by injury, I believe).
I’m looking for a Defensive player in the first round, but Pouncey wouldn’t be a bad pick. Would drafting Pouncey spell the end for Joseph and the Bucs??

Joe here
@PeteDutcher — Joe has no confirmation of Bucs players getting together yet. Heard plenty of rumors, though. It’s not like any of the other teams are practicing.

he is the runt of the litter……no thanks

If this idiot is boasting about teams going to draft him on twitter prior to the draft, then this isn’t the twittering idiot you want on your team. Who does this anyway? Talk about bad advice from his brother and agent. This might make teams think twice about drafting him.

Weneeddefense:
Much of the chagin of many who have a phobia about Twitter, virtually every person with a phone under the age of 30 twitters. Some more than others. Joe’s confident short of committing slander, NFL teams don’t give a damn if a player twitters.
One could classify Darnell Dockett as a “twttering idiot.” Who wouldn’t want Dockett on their team?

Good question Hire Greg Olson!
First, Faine, who until 2009, was a rock of consistency. Beginning in 2009, Faine began missing starts due to injuries. He’s missed 12 games the past two seasons, that’s a third of his potential starts missed. For a guy that rarely missed a start and is now 30, it’s a cause for concern if his body is beginning to break down from the brutal punishment it has taken.
Joseph has missed nine games over the past three years, far less on average than Faine and Joseph is a few years younger. Joesph didn’t miss a start in 2009.
To be clear, Joe has never been critical of Faine’s play. Yes, Joe has been critical of Faine mocking Josh Freeman for wanting to organize practices. Two very separate issues.

No way Tampa goes for Pouncey, too many other needs.

To twitter is one thing… to be an idiot and twitter is another. This guy is getting some questionable advice to tweet about who is gonna draft him. He thinks he is building demand, but he is most likely scaring teams away from him with all that public boasting.
He needs to prove to the NFL that he knows how to snap the ball to the QB not snap off online.

Protecting #5 doesn’t necessarily mean first round. Look what Mangurian did with basically practice squad guys this season. Pressure on the QB? That’s an entirely different story… That is a first round need to me and I think we’d be hard pressed to pass on DE inn the first for this kid.

I honestly wouldn’t be upset with the pick but I really think he is going at 15 to Miami.
