Benn’s Health Still Up In The Air

April 12th, 2011

Good health seems to be flowing freely among Bucs seriously injured last season, including Gerald McCoy, Brian Price, Cody Grimm and (gasp) Aqib Talib, and more.

Speaking yesterday on the Ron and Ian Show, on WDAE-AM 620, Bucs rockstar general manager Mark Dominik said Arrelious Benn is the lone banged up Buccaneer who’s status is questionable for 2011.

“He’s really the only guy that we’re mainly concerned about,” said Dominik, who added that Benn was progressing well from his ACL tear.

Benn’s knee went down in late December. To expect him to be 100 percent for opening day is like Joe hoping for Rachel Watson to invite him to share a bubble bath at the Clearwater Beach Hilton — highly unlikely.

Joe wonders whether wide receiver is the area where Dominik will shun his distaste for free agency and snatch a little insurance for Benn. Leaving Josh Freeman short of weapons should not be an option.

I heard that interview as well. To me, Dominick didn’t seem alarmed over Benn…so I think he’ll be fine.

But you left out the glass half full part, Joe!

Benn is the ONLY player left to be concerned about!

Joe didn’t leave any of this out. –Joe

  2. Dave Says:

Still sounds like he will be fine. He is on target, just not as far along as the other guys.

They still have Williams, Stroughter, Briscoe, Spurlock, and Parker.

To me, if they like Parker, they do nothing. If they aren’t sold on him, they might go get a B-level WR in FA…. whenever that is….

  3. Gary Says:

I’m more worried about Price. His treatment was basically screwing his hamstring back into the bone and no athlete has underwent that procedure, so they dont know what will happen.

This is all unknown territory for an NFL player who makes his living exploding off the line of scrimmage.

I would rather have insurance for Price than Benn. We have capable WRs who can step up. Who will do that for Price? Is Okam our only answer?

  4. flmike Says:

I agree with Gary, you have a very large man putting a lot of stress on his pelvis for 60 plays a game, Price is more worrisome than Benn. WRs blow knees every year, the NFL has their rehab basically down to a science, pretty much on the field at full strength, speed, full confidence in said knee in 8-12 months from injury. I always feel that guys who make a living cutting laterally have a harder time coming back from acl/mcl injuries and should always be given that 12-15 month window to come back fully. Price, he is a big man putting a great deal of stress and pressure on his pelvis each and every play. Being the guinea pig for a new procedure is always scary.

  5. JDouble Says:

Mike Williams is a stud and a lock as our #1 WR.

Benn looked promising as our #2 but with the injury nobody knows when he’ll be back and if he’ll be the same.

Stroughter was suppose to be a great slot guy for us for years to come, and still could be, but he wasn’t impressive at all last year.

Stovall is a turd and will not be back. Thank god!

Briscoe seems promising, but he played in like one game and is all potential at this point. Fingers crossed.

Parker is nothing special and with his character issues he’ll be lucky to make the roster this season.

Spurlock is actually pretty good and very underrated, but he’s 29 and I don’t think he’s in the long term plan.

So in the end we have a lot of potential at WR but not a lot of certainty. Remember in 2009 when our offensive line was suppose to be our biggest strength and it ended up being a huge weakness? Or last year when the same thing happen with our linebackers? I really hope that doesn’t happen this year with our WRs.

I think if Greg Salas makes it to the 4th we should take him. We could keep Williams, Benn, Briscoe, Salas, and Stroughter or Spurlock.

  6. Architek Says:

Draft a speed WR, it’s all about Freeman. Equipping Freeman means success…Regardless.

  7. Andy Says:

Rachel Watson is a straight up Goddess!!!

  8. mikeck Says:

There has got to be 1 or 2 decent WR’s floating around out there in Free Agent land. Cant draft everyone.

  9. Tuggz Says:

Just don’t rush ’em back to the field.

  10. HFXBUC Says:

    who’s Rachel Watson…

  11. Joe Says:

    HFXBUC:

    Google is your friend. 🙂

  12. Derf Says:

    What about Grimm????

After watching the games last year I think Grimm had more of an impact than Benn.

  13. Dave Says:

    GARY:

Good point on Price. They seem to think he is coming along just fine, but it is a new procedure so how it holds up is anyone’s guess.

    DERF:
Basically they are saying Grimm, Joseph, Talib, etc… are all recovering just fine and will be mostly healthy for training camp if there is one, but Benn might not be ready.

  14. Hunter Says:

I think we will draft a WR in the mid to late rounds. We have already reportedly been interested in 13 WRs in this draft; most being small school prospects… http://bucsblog.webs.com/apps/blog/entries/show/6468394-bucs-interests

  15. BigMacAttack Says:

To hell with free agents. Trade with the Cowgirls for the #9 pick and draft Julio Jones. Freeman, Blount, K2, Williams, Jones, Briscoe, Benn & Stroughter. That could be the best offensive skill set in the NFL. Who needs defense if you can put up 50 points per game. Go ahead and blitz, I dare you, I double dare you. Nah, sounds good, but let’s get a good DE or Guard.

Ooops! My bad! That’ll teach me!!!!

Wonder how Kurt and the cards feel about that…

  18. Joe Says:

    Pete Dutcher:

You might want to start thinking before typing.

First you claim a college player could be a roidhead because you think you heard his college team was under investigation when there has been no such report. Then you accuse Joe of leaving out information in a report. Come on, man. What’s wrong?

  19. BigMacAttack Says:

Who is Kurt and the cards? New Rock Band? I searched YouTube but came up empty???????

Anyway, I was just throwing that out there because I have liked Julio Jones for a few years now, and think he could be a huge asset, more so than Green, he’ll go quickly.

  20. Em Says:

I wish we could get Lance Moore from the Saints, who will be a FA.

  21. IMHO... Says:

people underestimate Brisco. I see him taking Benn’s spot while he recovers and draft a speedy WR, preferably one who runs a 4.4 and under. When was tha last time we signed a good WR during tha free agency period?

  22. Armando Says:

Rachel Watson, bubble bath, Clearwater Beach & hotel. Joe quit stealing from my bucket list!
