Who Said The Bucs Should Cut Kellen Winslow?

Joe knows Barrett Ruud is anything but a fan favorite. There are mobs of Bucs fans marching the streets with lit torches ready to run him out of town.
Joe himself has speculated that union-first Jeff Faine, with his hefty salary and unsettling number of missed games that has grown in the past two years (along with his age), may be a candidate to go bye-bye.
But Joe has yet to hear anyone suggest the Bucs wash their hands of tight end Kellen Winslow, yet this is the claim of video star Anwar Richardson and Woody Cummings of the Tampa Tribune. Both state they have heard this crazy rumor about Winslow from some uneducated if not inebriated folks who claim to be Bucs fans.
The Media General duo discuss the (un)likelihood of Ruud, Faine and Winslow not being on the Bucs roster whenever the NFL opens its doors again in this TBO Bucs vlog.
Joe suspects it’s a pretty safe bet Winslow will be starting at tight end this season so long as his knee holds up.
[UPDATE: Just to be clear, Cummings and Richardson were not pulling something out of their backsides with people speculating the Bucs will cut Winslow. Consider this post Joe had earlier this year.]

Well, my wife’s girlfriend’s ex-lover said he heard his second cousin say Kellan Winslow was going to be traded! So there might be some truth to him not on the team next year? I’m gonna go ask my magic-eightball app and we will get to the bottom of it Joe!

What a sad state of journalism we live in.
Some dude who writes a blog for another team writes an article listing a bunch of top tight ends he’d like to have on his team as if he’s playing fantasy football. Winslow was one of 11 tight ends he listed.
Fast forward two months later and this column becomes the source for two journalists to wax poetic about a groundswell of people wanting Winslow to be cut.
Very clearly, Joe, Cummings and Richardson pulled this out of their backsides.

Joe had some correspondence with a Bucs beat writer this morning and his exact words about speculation that Winslow may be released were, “Lots of hints about it from different folks.”
Again, speculation not coming from the Bucs.

This makes all of the sense in the world. These are the details of Winslow’s contract:
4/6/2009: Signed a six-year, $36.1 million contract. The deal contains $20.1 million guaranteed, including his 2009 and 2010 salaries. Winslow’s 2011 base salary is guaranteed for injury, but not for skill. Another $7 million is available through incentives. 2011: $8.259 million, 2012: $3.3 million, 2013: $4.5 million, 2014: $5.5 million.
THis means that they are outside the guaranteed “for skill” portion of the contract. They can walk away from this deal with clean hands.
I think Kellen is a great asset to this offense and worth his 8.259 million for 2011, but I do not make the decisions – the Glazerhouses do. Which means:
If they cut Winslow soon (before he gets hurt presumably) they save 8.25 million, if they dont cut him soon and he gets hurt – they have to pay him 8.25 million. That is a risk the Glazergouses will likley not take. They can also justify it by saying that they hope to negotiate and retain him just at a reduced salary. I believe that it is virtual certainty that he is cut based on a probablity of injury versus cost of salary analysis – say bye bye to Kellen.
Isnt it great to have the Glazerhouses as owners?

That 8 and a quarter million will probably be the only thing that keeps this franchise above the salary floor. Regardless, Winslow has been a top 5 tight end for the last 2 years, so really they are getting good value with this contract and Dom knows better than to waste a 2nd rounder like that.

Theodore great find. You actually clicked on Joe’s “source” that was from a panthers fans blog. You just caught Joe read handed, although he actually provided the link himself, so he apparently turned himself in.
But it really is irrelevant, because joebucsfan is a blog in itself, and therefore doesn’t have a responsibility to provide legitimate sources nor even is required to write news worthy stories.

And no, that was not the source. Joe posted that originally to mock the Panthers blogger. The reason why Joe linked this one was that people claimed Richardson and Cummings were pulling crap out of the air. If you guys had watched the video — which Joe linked from TBO — you will have noticed how both Richardson and Cummings found such talk about Winslow to be preposterous.

you guys only attack joes sources when the issue may possibly be construed as less than glowing to the glazers, rah rah or dom.
THis team has won 13 games in 2 years, never finished better than 3rd in the division and has not made the playoffs in three years – certainly everything cant be all positive,
Free appears to be great, blount and williams very good, talib and ronde great (okay nucleus). LAst years draft was a debacle unless GMC imporves dramatically and quickly, Price can stay healthy and Benn recovers, I like Cody. 09 draft was successful b/c of Free, but all else is questionable from Miller to Moore (0 sacks in two years for Moore is almost impossible).
It is not all roses, and remember rah rah is the HC and in charge of a D that is one of the leagus worst still despite all of the draft opportunities.
