Draft Buzz: Watch Out For Greg Romeus

Pay attention, Bucs fans, reporting to the NFL Scouting Combine today are linebackers and defensive linemen.
Boy, the Bucs could use a couple of blue chip studs from this crop.
NFL Draft guru Justin Pawlowksi, of WDAE-AM 620, shares insight on a lot of these guys, including a chat he had with Dave Wannstadt about University of Pittsburgh end Greg Romeus. Pawlowski is a radio analyst for USF Football games and typically has incredible insight into Big East players long before anyone else.

If Romeus is available in the 4th take him, to many health concerns to consider any earlier.

Another thing Justin- Don’t be shocked if Aldon Smith shows up everyone, including Robert Quinn, at the combine. If that happened how high do you think Smith’s stock could rise?

I’ve actually seen a site that had the Bucs taking Martez Wilson with the #20 pick. DE’s will go fast, and the top OLB/DE prospects as well. Martez is an inside LB that can play OLB. Could he be Ruud’s replacement? Black’s? Hayes? If too many edge rushers are gone, I could easily see this as our pick. I’ve seen several options for the 2nd round at DE, including Jabaal Sheard and Allen Bailey (who’s stock has been falling off lately).

BamBam, if all the DE’s are somehow gone when the Bucs pick, not likely, then obviously somebody unexpected has fallen. In that case I’m guessing one of the top Tackles will still be there and Dominik will snatch one of those up before reaching for an ILB.

Martez Wilson would be a reach at #20. He just isn’t really a solid first round talent. Linebackers of similar talent will be available when the bucs pick in the second round.
Capt. Tim- That erbs palsy issue is too much of a question mark with Clayborn. Teams could look past him maybe having a bit of a down year but the with the whole chronic health issue thing I am looking for him to drop out of the first round completely. I mean how do we know the erbs palsy didn’t contribute or wasn’t the main factor in his lesser stats this year? Its just too much of a risk. He claims it hasn’t been a factor in his play but he could easily be trying to hide it.
BamBam- Haven’t researched Jabaal Sheard but Allen Bailey isn’t looking to provide much of a pass rush as 4-3 end on the NFL level. He might make a little better of a left end than Kyle Moore but probably not a good pick, even in the second round, for a 4-3 team. He has considerably more value for a 3-4 team. Like gotbbucs said if somehow the first round 4-3 defensive ends are all gone by #20(not likely at this point) the best player available will probably be an offensive guy and Rah\Dom(hopefully) won’t reach for a linebacker in that situation. That shouldn’t happen though. As I said, at least one of the trio of Aldon Smith, Justin Houston, or Ryan Kerrigan should be there at #20 and all three are CONSIDERABLY higher on everyone’s big boards than Martez Wilson.

Not all DEs will be gone, but a significant number fitting the 4-3 scheme will. We may have to trade up to get Kerrigan, and some think it would be reaching to take Clayborn at 20. That was the thought process behind Wilson. Not saying I agree or disagree, just what others are seeing in early mock drafts. Things will obviously change much between now and the draft. I was just bringing up what some are finding as possible Bucs draft choices in the first round other than DE.

I don’t think Dominik will hesitate one bit moving up to grab the D-End that he has identified as “his guy”. I don’t think this is a draft with a ton of value beyond the 4th round so if he wants to package up some later picks to go get a DE in round one I have no problem with that.
Kerrigan seems like like a Dominik type of guy with his high motor, good production, work ethic, and the fact that he was a team captain. I still like Adrian Clayborn’s skill set, but he’s in a free fall right now and I don’t think he can recover, plus I really want to know for sure what his physical limitations are going to be moving forward.

Agreed, I think Dom makes some moves to step up a couple spots and get the guy he really wants. Although, if guys he’s after go too quickly, he may even step down in round one, then move up in other rounds to get 2nd, 3rd and 4th round picks he really wants.

Aldon Smith looks weak to me and i think he will get pushed around in the NFL and be a major liability in the run game. Get thoughts of Gaines RIP, no thanks

Looks weak to you Ash? Maybe open your eyes next time you watch him. His game is nothing like Gaines Adams. He has inside moves and even lines up at defensive tackle to rush from the interior. I don’t think he looks like anything to you because I don’t think you have watched any of the film of him.

I have been caling for Greg Romeus in round 3 for a LONG time now.
I think after we look back in 3 years he will be one of the best, if not the best pass rusher in the draft.

2. Carter LB UNC
3. Geg Romeus DE Pitt
4. Nate Irving ILB N St
5. Locke RB Kentucky

I have been saying this and I will continue do not rule out the Bucs drafting a CB. We all learned last season that you can never have enough good DBs. I am not sold on Lewis…

Hard to evaluate Lewis yet. He was injured from the off-season through mid-season. Only the final half of the season was he relatively healthy, and then how do you evaluate someone that hasn’t been able to go full speed during the most critical developmental stages for a rookie… the off-season program. We will get a much better idea where Lewis is at this year.

Dave- I also have been picking Greg Romeus for a long time, as a 4th round pick. But I don’t think he has the speed to be a great rusher. I envision him as a LDE, able to play the run and bull rush. Strong and quick- but not fast, and that seperates the great RDE. I think now that Ryan Winterswyk of Boise state may be our LDE in the 4th. Similar skills to Romeus- not as refined- but no Back surgery either

IF they do select a CB, it will be in round 4 or later.
You MUST target the weakness of the team as ong as you are not reaching with a pick.
DE & LB are the major weaknesses of the team.
The team seems very high on Biggers and Lewis moving forward AND Barber is back another year.
