Bucs To Tag Joseph With Shaky Tender

For those who don’t give a hoot about contract negotiations, this could be an annoying post about a somewhat bogus restricted free agent tender the Bucs will slap on Davin Joseph, per Rick Stroud of the St. Pete Times.
In a nutshell, Joseph’s five seasons of service might not be good enough to get him to unrestricted free agency in 2011. That depends on the labor agreement the owners and players agree to in the coming weeks (months?). Four years of service was once enough to do it, but that bumped up to six temporarily last year, and there’s no telling what will happen next.
Joseph has played five seasons. And he has no contract for 2011.
Stroud claims the Bucs soon will put a one-year, restricted free agent tender on Joseph, just in case he would fall under that classification for 2011. That way they have him locked up, much like they did with Barrett Ruud last year.
In Joe’s eyes, all this means is the Bucs are serious about keeping Joseph a Buccaneer, or they know he’s darn good value for 2011 at the approximate tender cost of $3.2 million, and they don’t want to lose that option.

Not just Joseph either: Black, Trueblood, Hayward, Crowder, and Stovall as well!

GOOD. I hope this means they are seriouos about signing him. I am sick of the bashing he has taken with people saying they were better without him…. NO
They were better when Blount started carrying the rock. Joseph is the best run blocker on the team, imho.
Aside from that, they need to sign him so they cans tay focused on the defensive front 7. With him back, and Zuttah, Hardman, Carter, and Larson, and Faine…. the interior 3 O-Linemen are set and deep.
Letting him go would kill that depth.
Personally, I hope they sign Trueblood (at a reasonable rate) for the same reason, depth. Although in his case he would be a backup.
Black and Hayward would be for depth and competition as well.

it’s s#!Tty but it’s business and if Davin is serious about his he should sign his tender, beat his competition and he’ll be rewarded by us or another team if he suceeds.

Like Ruud last year, I think the organization is trying to decide which direction to go with him. Probably a smart way to go. Can keep fairly cheap, and not risk a big contract.

As I understand it, these are just meant to prevent them from signing elsewhere until the CBA works out.
After that, the agreements are voided and new deals will be put in place. That’s according to Steve Duemigg I think.

Ruud played this year for his tenure. I think they are like a one year contract

they can negotiate contract extensions even with this ‘one-year tender’…i’m just glad they didn’t let him go and test the free agent market…hope they place something similar on Ruud

They can’t on Ruud. He has been in the league for 6 years and by last years FA rules that makes him a UFA. By the original CBA rules I think he would have been a UFA last year.
