  1. Joe T. Says:

They should have drafted Eric Berry last year instead of Gerald McCoy and this would have been a non-issue.

    see previous post

  3. BamBamBuc Says:

This is a non-issue. Could we get a Safety? Could we use a Safety? Sure, but it’s not really a priority. Grimm and Jones would be fine. Asante is a backup as well as Lynch, and that’s not factoring Tanard at all. Do they draft a Safety? Maybe, but it’s not because of need, but because of Best Player Available. If we had drafted Berry last year (not knowing Tanard would be suspended indefinitely), we would be incredibly strong across the DB field, but we’d still be horribly lacking all across the DL. And this year’s crop of DTs isn’t nearly as good as last year. Brian Price is not GMC. He’s good, and may even be better than I give him credit for right now, but GMC has shown the progress that Price was unable to due to injury. Not only that, but DT and DE take longer to develop than Safety in the NFL, so we are now a year ahead on the DT development than we would have been had we drafted Berry, and still in decent shape at Safety.

    Drafted Berry instead of McCoy???
You realize we got a starting safety in the 7th round, don’t you?
Try getting an top talent DT in the 7th!
Our secondary played fine last year. Our greatest need was DT. Now we have fixed that for years to come
Drafting Berry wouldn’t have changed anything

  5. gitarlvr Says:

Eric Berry??? Because we all know drafting safeties is more important than drafting defensive line. You know guys there is a reason why so many more defensive lineman are drafted in the first round and in the top ten than safeties right? Its because having some guys to stop the run and get after the QB up front is just a little more important than having a star safety. Safety is one of the least drafted positions in the first round. Try thinking for a second before you post next time. But then you guys are obviously thomas like idiots who don’t know that Gerald McCoy was becoming a force before he got hurt last year. Maybe try watching the games some time.

  6. gitarlvr Says:

And like Capt. Tim points out the Bucs found a starting quality guy in the seventh round. Safety is FAR AND AWAY the easiest defensive position to find quality players late in the draft. If the Bucs are going to draft a safety this year there is no need to do it before the middle rounds.

  7. sunrisejeff Says:

I wouldn’t mind taking a look at Robert Sands in the 4th/5th rounds but wouldn’t touch the position before then personally.

  8. Dave Says:

WOW Joe T…. football ignorance abounds.

No way the Bucs should have taken a Safety last year instead of McCoy.
The DT postition is developing and set now for the foreseeable future, and it is a MUCH more important part of the defense than safety.

The Bucs got a start in round 7. they have a decent one in Jones. They are very high on Asante and hope Lynch comes on even more. None of this even says where they stand with TJax because they don’t know at this point. Anything they get from him is a bonus.
The DBs are strong. Strongest part of the Defense.
CB: Talib, Barber, Biggers, Lewis, Mack. Biggers and Lewis are on their way to developing into a Barber replacement.

The only safety I want them to take is in the 5th round because I think Duenta Williams of UNC or Black of UF will be avaialable and both would be a very good pick that late and would help on special teams.

Don’t have a differing opinion on here guys or gitrlvr will lump you into the “Thomas club”! Give me a break!
BTW thanks for that vasline tip gitrlvr! It’s always nice to get experienced/first-hand advice!

  10. Capt. Troll killer Tim Says:

I think we pick a safety, probably 5th or 6th round. One dark horse I like is Shiloh Keo. Seems to have good speed and great insticts
