Raheem Morris Was Not Slighted
February 5th, 2011Many Bucs fans crumbled up an empty beer can in their fists, disgusted with the news that Bucs coach Raheem Morris finished second in the Coach of the Year honors to Patriots coach Bill Belicheat.
Many of these same Bucs fans are convinced Morris not getting the honor was some sort of bias or conspiracy led by a certain four-letter Stalinist outfit based in Connecticut.
But hold up, says good guy Stephen Holder of the St. Petersburg Times. He believes that Morris actually finishing second in the voting was indeed high praise of the Bucs coach.
That means the only guy who was even remotely close to Morris in the voting was the winner, Belichick — a guy who has won three Super Bowls and had the league’s best record despite having Larry, Curly and Moe as his primary skill-position players. Again, it’s hard to argue against Morris as the winner here, but both he and Belichick did wonderful jobs this season. And keep in mind, ballots were due just after the end of the regular season, so the Patriots’ playoff loss to the Jets was not taken into account. At the time the ballots were due, the Patriots looked like a favorite to win the Super Bowl.
Joe has heard some arguments pro-Belicheat and Joe doesn’t quite buy it, though Joe understands the reasoning behind such logic.
At any rate, any time someone in the MSM has a reference to The Three Stooges, Joe has to give the author mad props.

Sam Bradford wins ROY on offense as expected.
Williams got a couple of the 6 remaining votes while the deserving Sam got the first 44!
February 5th, 2011 at 2:45 pm
Guest,
You’re right. What Bradford did for the Rams was far more than what Williams (by himself) did for the Bucs. Bradford probably deserved the offensive rookie of the year award.
That shouldn’t detract from the fact that Williams pulled in 11 TD passes (a team single season record and some were pretty fantastic catches). He had nearly 1000 yards, even though there weren’t any “real” threats at WR most of the season. Benn came on near mid-season to lend a hand, Spurlock had his moments, and Briscoe showed some skill late, but Williams had to handle most of the WR load all year. I know, K2 took some of the pressure as well.
I personally don’t really care about the award itself. Let Bradford have it. I’m just happy to have a guy like Williams on our team. Hopefully Benn will recover quickly and have a good season next year, as he really played well the more the season progressed. I really like Briscoe as well.
Looking at the young group of first and second year players is amazing. Freeman, Blount, Williams, Benn, Briscoe, Parker, GMC, hopefully Price, Biggers and Lewis, Grimm, Watson. That’s not even counting guys that may or may not be back next year, like Woods, Magee, Larsen, Dotson, etc. The youth is exciting as a whole, not as individuals. Let Bradford have his award.
February 5th, 2011 at 3:45 pm
I dont really care who wins NFL awards .
February 5th, 2011 at 3:45 pm
THE ONLY AWARD I CARE ABOUT IS D-BAG OF THE YEAR!!!!
AND THE WINNER IS……..THOMAS!!!!
February 5th, 2011 at 4:37 pm
Better to be “D-BaG” than irrelevant!
Of course he wasnt slighted. How many COY’s teams did not make the playoffs (and finish third place in the division)? Probably not many if any.
BTW: the COY doesnt mean coaching greatness. here are some former winners:
1994 Dave Wannstedt Chicago
1995 Ray Rhodes Philadelphia
1996 Dom Capers Carolina
1997 Jim Fassel NY Giants
2000 Jim Haslett New Orleans
2001 Dick Jauron Chicago
2005 Lovie Smith Chicago
2006 Sean Payton New Orleans
2008 Mike Smith Atlanta
2009 Marvin Lewis Cincinnati
Hardly a list of future HOF’s. Yes – Bellichick has won 3, Parcells at least 1. But winning a COY usually means more about how bad the team was the year before.
Also, if you think improvement automatically continues from year-to-year look at the 09 to 10 Bengals. Recent league history indicates that many teams have good-bad-good-bad years mostly due to relative strength and weakness of schedule. Look at the NFC South as an example. Been quite a while since there was a repeat champ.
February 5th, 2011 at 4:38 pm
Also, the HC many of you ridiculed: Leeman Bennett. He won the award in 1977.
February 5th, 2011 at 4:51 pm
Thomas said “1. But winning a COY usually means more about how bad the team was the year before.”
Does this not make the argument that Morris should have won over good ole Bill?
February 5th, 2011 at 4:53 pm
While I can see a case for Belacheat, I beg to differ Mr. Holder. No one has EVER been that successful with that young of a team. The turn around was amazing, from a team that had absolutely been stripped of talent. Raheem should have won that award. No worries, his time will come. Again Crying’ Ira really sucks for not supporting Raheem Morris! I called and let my feelings be known.
February 5th, 2011 at 5:00 pm
Frankly, I was stunned when he came in second place. Don’t get me wrong, I agree with the placement but didn’t think he would beat out guys like Haley and Lovie Smith. The Bucs didn’t receive very much national coverage until late in the season and I thought that might make a difference. It’s cool that the “experts” feel the same way that the majority of Bucs fans do about the job Raheem has done this year!
February 5th, 2011 at 5:11 pm
Raheem should’ve won it no question. Think about it!! Were any of you surprised that the Patriots had a great year once again? Even though they were young just like we were, they had a much more stable situation. They have Tom Brady, Wes Welker, Logan Mankins, Belicheck and others who were leading the way for them. Much different situation than us.
We had just come off a disastrous 2009 season, there really wasn’t a lot of hope and we had 10 rookies or so starting (many of them off the scrap heap). Many thought we were the worst team in the league and thought we would get no more than 5 or 6 wins. When you evaluate our season, there’s many things to look at. We were in a lot worse shape than the Patriots and we still went 10-6.
February 5th, 2011 at 6:06 pm
Raheem grows on you.
I would not trade Raheem Morris today for Bill Belicheat. No Way Hoe se. Raheem is the perfect coach for this team. The Bucs Chemistry is off the charts. Too bad they don’t give an award for that. Oh wait, they do, it’s called Lombardi.
February 5th, 2011 at 6:59 pm
“Recent league history indicates that many teams have good-bad-good-bad years mostly due to relative strength and weakness of schedule. Look at the NFC South as an example. Been quite a while since there was a repeat champ.”
————–
There not being a repeat winner in the NFC south has nothing to do with schedule. With the exception of 2 games, they all play the exact same schedule. There is never a repeat champ because the division has 4 well run organizations. Even the teams that have miserable seasons in the recent past (Atlanta, Tampa) have rebounded quickly to be a really good team. You can choose to point to Cincinnati as a team that had a good season then fell off, I will choose to point to Atlanta, which has had 3 consecutive good seasons. Funny how you choose a team in a different conference versus one in our own division to make a comparison with.
February 5th, 2011 at 7:04 pm
It is hard to disagree with giving the award to Bellicheat, he did a great job coaching this year (as much as I hate typing that). However, I think what Raheem did with our team was even better. We were a tiebreaker away from being in the playoffs, and we don’t have one real Pro Bowl player. To me, that’s coaching ’em up! Not to mention all the ridiculous amount of injuries we had to deal with, all at critical positions. However, I highly doubt Raheem really gives a damn about that award, so neither do I.
February 5th, 2011 at 7:11 pm
Hell Joe/s, you want Three Stooges references? Look at the Packers, they named their stadium after one of them!
February 5th, 2011 at 7:34 pm
Hey Joe! I just saw that the NFL alumni association gave Aqib Talib their Defensive back of the year award!!! Get your take up. We need to discuss!
February 5th, 2011 at 7:39 pm
Saints: 05= 3-13; 06= 10-6; 07= 7-9.
Carolina had 4 consec years going back and forth from 7-9 to 11-5.
How is that for a division example? Also there is more than a two game difference between division teams. For one, you cant play yourself brainiac. There will be between 4-6 diff games between division teams.
February 5th, 2011 at 8:42 pm
Here is the deal… Morris beat 1 team with a winning record, and he failed to make the post-season.
Also, nobody watched the Bucs. I read somewhere a few weeks ago that the Bucs were the least watched team in the NFL. Part of that is due to the local blackout, but this team generates almost zero national interest.
February 5th, 2011 at 9:12 pm
exactly jerry. excellent points. I will add that the only win against a winning team came in week 17 when the saints elected not to play key starters because the game was meaningless for them. they did start brees but pulled him early with the game in the balance.
brees was quoted after the game as saying “our first priority was to not get anyone hurt.” acknowledging their interest in winning.
turned out to be a bad move as they lost the next week to an inferior seattle team. Yes we did beat seattle but that was after hasselback led the team downfield for an easy td then got hurt. In came Charlie the worst and the bucs were handed another gift. Freeman was excellent in that game though.
I have tried but they will never accept the reality of many of these wins (poor teams with heir second string (clausen, whitehurst etc), and third string (max hall, troy smith) qbs and so on. There were obvious improvements on the offense, but some of these guys have their heads so far in the clouds that they are altitude sick believing that the record was not inflated.
February 5th, 2011 at 9:14 pm
I really don’t care, I just want to see the team win. I also wouldn’t be surprised if Rah felt the same way.
February 5th, 2011 at 9:39 pm
@Thomas,
Okay, how about you finish the last 2 years with the Saints. Didn’t think so. You are such a “glass half empty” kind of guy. Your friends must love you (that is if you have any friends).
Actually, there is 2 games difference, meaning you play 2 teams that the other 3 teams in the division do not. Let me tell you how it works: Each division plays another division in each conference (that is 8 games); they also play each other twice (that is 6 games) – 8 + 6 =14. Get it, 8 games plus 6 games equals 14 games. So how exactly do you get that they have up to 6 games difference? Please explain that to me Einstein. So to sum it all up for you: we played 2 teams that NO, Carolina, and Atlanta did not play (Washington and Detroit, so we finished 1-1, which is hardly taking advantage. NO went 2-0, Atlanta 1-1, Carolina 0-2). Do you want to dispute any more facts?
February 5th, 2011 at 9:46 pm
It’s amazing to me that any fan of this team (I use that term loosely) would be so happy about one of our own winning an award. Must have been a great last couple days, with both Raheem and Mike Williams both not winning.
February 5th, 2011 at 9:46 pm
Should be “not” winning an award
February 5th, 2011 at 10:02 pm
Waste of time hawaiian,he does this all day on every teams website,we are what he calls his best friends. We actualy take time and listen to him because I cant believe any one person can be so stupid.
February 5th, 2011 at 10:13 pm
Joe, I was trying to post a long comment on here but it wouldn’t let me. I copied it and am ready to post it on here if you could tell what might be wrong.
February 5th, 2011 at 10:24 pm
Without comparing schedules, my memory was that there were 4 differences in schedule but I could be wrong about that. I recalled NO playing Minnesota on opening night, we didnt play them, I believe NO played dallas, we didnt play them – maybe that was it. Seems like more.
I love Talib but shocked he won that DB award playing only 11 games. The two players who won ROY deserved those awards (I know Capt Tim thinks McCoy was robbed because Detroit funnelled every running play and qb pressure toward suh to pad his stats lol). I aam sure the other players whose salaries are tied to stats would not have had any problem with that.
Williams and Blount played well but Bradford had MAJOR impact for that team.
I would not have given the COY award to Rah (third place and no playoffs eliminates him) I know that you are shocked. Haley, Lovie and Bellichick were my 1-3.
I always want deserving bucs to win awards but I would prefer post-season berths. It seems pretty weak to miss the playoffs yet beg for all these awards. Make and compete in the playoffs and the awards will come – ask Dungy and Gruden’s players.
February 5th, 2011 at 10:30 pm
gitarlvr:
You are begging to be banned.
If you don’t like Thomas, don’t read his comments. You’re not going to start flamewars around here.
No more. Joe warned you last night. You can disagree with Thomas all you want but you’re not going to go to every thread calling him out to start a flamewar.
Joe likes you as a poster but enough is enough.
February 5th, 2011 at 10:32 pm
I just think it’s telling that late in the third quarter is “early in the game”. The announcers were stunned. Plus, it’s not like they were winning, Brees sat down and we came back. We were winning, against starters, and they gave up.
But, in Thomas’ world, all that counts is that we “could” have lost.
We beat teams with their that had 2nd stringers. Guess what — we had 2nd stringers (and people off of other teams practice squads!) playing! Also, many of those 2nd stringer led teams beat other teams.
We were in all but 2 games this year. The Falcons (twice), Ravens and Lions all escaped losing to us (with their starters playing) by questionable calls and bad luck.
But, I guess you want to tell us how much the Bucs suck, huh, Thomas?
There’s a difference between sober reality checks and bashing. You walk that edge and seem to prefer the bashing side. Try something positive once in a while.
February 5th, 2011 at 10:39 pm
Capt. Tim:
Joe accidently deleted your comment, Joe apologizes. Didn’t mean to.
February 5th, 2011 at 10:41 pm
“I recalled NO playing Minnesota on opening night, we didnt play them, I believe NO played dallas, we didnt play them – maybe that was it. Seems like more.”
———–
It’s not maybe that was it, that WAS it. It may seem like more, but it WASN’T more. Just admit when you are wrong, is it that hard for you to do? Again, I don’t think Bellicheat didn’t deserve the award, I just think Raheem was more deserving. That is a matter of opinion (I am probably biased for him, you are definitely biased against Morris). However, it’s wrong of you to come on the site and gloat about it, especially when your facts are wrong (which you still won’t admit). I agree with you that playoffs are better than awards, and awards will come with playoffs. But it really wouldn’t kill you to give a little credit where credit is due; Raheem did an excellent job this year, and the entire team had a very good season (not good enough, but still yet very good). To say otherwise is foolish, but then again, that’s never stopped you before.
February 6th, 2011 at 1:20 am
Joe, I honestly think you’ve lost your everlovin mind. Every conversation now begins and ends with Thomas. I am really starting to wonder why I bother. Some things just aren’t worth the trouble and aggravation. I would rather have a conversation with my hound while he’s licking his balls. At least he gets it.
February 6th, 2011 at 1:44 am
Did someone just fart? It sure smells like $h!t in here.
February 6th, 2011 at 3:30 am
Hey, I’m just curious Joe,
What exactly did gitarlvr say that was so bad?
Was it this?
THE ONLY AWARD I CARE ABOUT IS D-BAG OF THE YEAR!!!!
AND THE WINNER IS……..THOMAS!!!!
?? I will admit that I don’t read much of thomas’s rants, it gets old and we are still not yet beyond the Super Bowl.. but day after day week after week SSDD from Thomas. and the rest.. I get it you don’t like the new coach / Gm / owners… but the constant vomit that is put out by some here on JBF , is this not enough to warrant a banning also? if every thing you say is only directed to get a response from the other members of JBF posts then that is not a pro Buccaneer post. and as fans we deserve to have that as well as the nay sayer. free speech and all that. but to think that the nonstop negative tones every single post is about to over fill my cup.
Look I like the team good or bad super bowl champ or bottom feeder, am I supposed to accept the negative comments posted on this site daily? hey I can and do read else where! you have the best thing going by far!! But so far as to make me want to listen to negative comments on every single article you post for us is getting beyond what is to be accepted..
Fair is fair right?
February 6th, 2011 at 4:08 am
if you don’t like what some guy is saying then just don’t read it. I learned after Thomas 2.2’s 2nd post that i need not read any of what he has to say. it’s pretty easy. save yourself aggravation.
February 6th, 2011 at 4:27 am
Yet another thread killed by Thomas, as the irritation rate rises . . .
February 6th, 2011 at 4:41 am
and by the way, that fecal matter sure throws my name in his post on a frequent basis ! Probably a lot more times than Gitarlvr has mentioned his name ! Are doesn’t that count because I am some clueless Homer! Seems I try to post here, and stay on topic, to keep This site a place of shared opinions. Meybe the fact that I am both positive and RIGHT most of the time makes me less valuable as a poster than a hate monger. Sorry, I’ll try to be more of an uninformed hateful Dick!! In the mean time, I would appreciate that p.o.s not post my name, or speak for me , in his comments. Flame on!!
February 6th, 2011 at 10:59 am
Geese, this thread sucked. Thomas defeated himself with his own argument, and came off completely clueless in the rest of the thread. gitar got slapped, for expressing himself against the all mighty Thomas. Thomas insights people on here all the time, so he brings it on himself. If he does not like Gitar’s post why can’t he skip it, like the rest of us were instructed to do if we do not like Thomas’s post. Is he one of the Joe’s brother in law or something?
February 6th, 2011 at 11:04 am
Rusty Rhino, well said. Thank you.
JoeFreeSpeech4Aholes.com
February 6th, 2011 at 11:54 am
You guys kill the threads by your commenting to Thomas! His comments get exactly what he wants! Bingo, Tuggz.
February 6th, 2011 at 11:56 am
BTW I hope the game-breaks from the commericals tonight are great!
February 6th, 2011 at 12:09 pm
Oar, I’d agree. But if you read his post, he called me out. I didn’t mention him in my early post. Apparently, he is allowed to do this, although Gitarlvr may get booted for mentioning him. I deserve it- cause I’m positive, and meybe a homer. But I’m gonna try to be a hateful, bitter ignorant prick, to increase my value as a poster. How am I Doing?
February 6th, 2011 at 12:23 pm
joe is not going to respond?
February 6th, 2011 at 12:36 pm
CaptTim
To each thier own, I guess? It’s cool, but it still doesn’t change the fact that such replys are what he wants!
February 6th, 2011 at 12:53 pm
Capt. Tim:
Of course Joe doesn’t see every post. If you think Thomas is calling you out in multiple threads in the same short span of time where you are not even commenting to start a flamewar, feel free to e-mail Joe and he will take care of it.
Joe will write this once more and he won’t write it again: Unless someone is abusing this site or being a racist el at, people are free to express their opinions. If someone doesn’t like Raheem, GMC, Ruud, Caddy, the Glazers and so forth, so be it. This is not a cheerleading site nor is this a hate site. Joe has seen too many sites that try to control what people think/write shrivel up and die for that very reason.
There are a couple of posters that write here regularly that if they never came back, Joe wouldn’t lose a second of sleep. Joe doesn’t agree, like or respect what these posters write, but Joe ignores them. Besides, these said posters are doing nothing wrong. One of the core reasons this site exists is to offer a forum for differing thought.
If you don’t like the fact Thomas hates Raheem for whatever reason, don’t read his comments and for goodness sake don’t respond to his comments. If Raheem continues to win, he will eventually win over Thomas. If Raheem fails, Thomas will be right. One of the two will happen.
In the meantime, unless Thomas freaks out or goes wilding — you can always e-mail Joe with evidence — he’s safe. Joe doesn’t like all that Thomas writes either. In fact Joe confronted Thomas on his “the Bucs should have gotten Suh” line the other night. But Joe is not BSPN. He doesn’t try to force people to think the way Joe wants people to think.
Joe never wants to lose any posters, especially long-time commenters. But Joe’s not going to turn this site into a cheerleader site nor an anti-Bucs site either.
Debate is healthy.
February 6th, 2011 at 1:02 pm
RustyRhino:
gitarlvr went on multiple threads with basically a one-line comment calling out Thomas that not only had nothing to do with the subject of the post, but Thomas had not even commented in said thread.
That’s blatantly trying to start a flamewar.
Joe likes gitarlvr, and he was warned to knock it off and Joe deleted the comments.
February 6th, 2011 at 2:26 pm
I agree Joe, no one should be banned without breaking the rules. I disagree with almost everything Thomas says, but I still say he should not be banned. I will also add, Joe has always giving a couple warnings before booting anyone.
OAR…You are 100% right. We should all simply stop responding Thomas, and I know I am one that he has been able to bait time and time again. I am going to give your way a shot.
February 6th, 2011 at 5:50 pm
I really dont want to start a flamewar Joe. I was making a point. In case you havent noticed you already have a flamewar on your hands. So I’ll stop with the stupid comments but that wont change the fact that this has already degenerated into a flamewar for the most part and to quote the piano man-
“We didn’t start the fire”
February 6th, 2011 at 9:59 pm
I also, out of respect for you, will do things your way.
February 7th, 2011 at 12:53 am
Packers played a good game and deserved to win. They beat a tough team. I think the Bucs should draft Clay Matthews’ brother. I will attempt to ignore the troll, and he can go pound sand.
February 7th, 2011 at 2:04 am
I am a biased, biased fan who loves the Bucs, so I get why Belichek won in the grand scheme of things, but I’m sad, mad and think that Coach Morris should have won, because of what he did accomplish with this team this season. The Patriots having a winning season and getting to the playoffs was of no surprise to anyone.
Very happy that Aqib Talib won his award! That means he was all game in ALL 11 games he played.
