Rays Sign Big Name Free Agents

January 22nd, 2011

Yes, Joe loves his Rays. And it was a quite a late night for Rays fans who learned the good guys signed a couple of big-name players past their prime. But they might have one more huge season left and the cost wasn’t too steep.

Check out JoeRaysFan.com and join in the chatter, which is sure to heat up today and through the weekend.

We have a true lead off hitter and a DH. Great move by the Rays.

    Joe here,

@Brad – It might not work out. Nobody would be stunned if Ramirez is a walking A-hole and disinterested. But Joe is brimming with hope this morning. That’s what being a fan is all about. Both of these guys should be awfully motivated to stick it to the Sox and Yanks.

Anything but a World Series ring makes these signings unacceptable, and I’m sorry but this just doesn’t get us there. It hurts me because every instinct I have tells me not to cheer for these douchebags and now they’re playing for my favorite team.

I really like the ownership group, so it’s almost painful to be re-introduced to the “Hit Show”…but signing Johnny Damon and Manny Ramirez, 10 years AFTER they were making SC highlight reels is anti-climactic after the last couple of seasons.

After losing names like: Carl Crawford, Carlos Pena, Rafael Soriano, Grant Balfour, and trading away Jason Bartlett and Matt Garza…

…we sign Jose Canseco and Mark McGuire?

I would rather have seen the Rays add one decent pitcher than sign two old warhorses that should have been put out to pasture!

Seems too much like a PR move – why else would you “count” on a 38 year old to start…anywhere…especially in a division where you’ll be facing the Redsox and Yankee’s several times?

…that’s some tough sleddin’ for some old dogs.

    P.S.

(Didn’t we need to work on the bullpen?)
