Nothing Sinister In Bisaccia’s Quote
January 12th, 2011Joe’s read the happy-to-be-here quotes from former Bucs special teams coch Rich Bisaccia as he joined the Chargers’ coaching staff yesterday.
And yes, Joe did a quick double take on this one found at FanHouse.com and other outlets:
“This is a tremendous opportunity for me to be part of a winning organization and work with Norv Turner. There’s a real opportunity here to win it all,” Bisaccia said.
So is Bisaccia backhandedly saying the Bucs are NOT a winning organization, Raheem Morris is no Norv Turner, and there’s no shot to win a Super Bowl in Tampa?
Joe doesn’t buy any of that. Joe reads this as Bisaccia, who rarely dishes out quotes, simply hyped up and pouring out love for his new gig. Just giving the positives of his job, not taking a crack at the Bucs.
Now Joe could be wrong, but all indications are Bisaccia’s just a guy happy to get a huge raise and a team desperate for his services.

Joe says “hyped up and pouring out love for his new gig. Just giving the positives of his job, not taking a crack at the Bucs.”
Bingo, you nailed that on the head
January 12th, 2011 at 9:19 am
Unfortunately, the nah sayers are going to use this as further ammunition
that the Glazers are cheap. I do wonder if Rich gave the Glazers a chance to counter. I do feel this will be a set back. I hope the new guy is up to the task or this could end for him. At least we won’t have to worry that Mark and Rah won’t make a change if the jobs not getting done.
January 12th, 2011 at 9:23 am
Yeah I agree no crack at the Bucs, he’s just saying the things most say when they take a new job…and its clearly the emotion of getting paid as who really thinks Norv Turner is ever going to win it all? Turner was lucky the CBA is in doubt or Spanos is cheap or whatever, to even hang on to his gig. Frankly, a lot of coaches have been lucky so far this off-season for whatever reasons.
January 12th, 2011 at 9:26 am
I can see leaving to be an OC in the NFL, or a HC in college….but why sell your home and move your whole family just be a ST coach again for another team? There is more to the story imo.
January 12th, 2011 at 9:28 am
There is more to this story than meets the eye. Bisaccia has a daughter entering her senior year in high school here, who is a varsity cheerleader and a son who will be a starting junior on the same schools varsity football team. I seriously doubt he would choose to uproot his family at this point unless he was either offered a boat load of money he couldn’t refuse or there are some internal organizational issues that troubled him enough that he felt compelled to move on. Hopefully, he was just made an offer that was impossible to refuse and not the latter.
January 12th, 2011 at 9:30 am
A floundering year for Norv and Bisaccia could be the next HC. He’s tired of the Bucs, wanted something new and fresh, and found it with a pay raise in SD. Bye.
January 12th, 2011 at 9:37 am
I’m thinking he wants to be the next charger head coach…
January 12th, 2011 at 9:39 am
he was clearly looked over as moving up further in this organization and he might have had someone whisper in his ear that if that idiot norv turdball goofs it up again (as usual), he could be out, and you might be in line for the job….so i think he sees a real upside in san diego as opposed to tampa….and i hear he likes to shoot down to tiajuana every time they play san diego…so now he can spend many nights in tiajuana with a 25 dollar floozy while he leave the wiferino and chilli-dogs back in tampa bay…..then again a substantial pay raise also fostered this move, while now with all that money he can afford a tiajuana 3-way for 50 bucks on the reg…………….adam from ny
January 12th, 2011 at 9:51 am
First, I’m glad Raheem is no Norv Turner. Turner hasn’t won it all as head coach, if I recall correctly. But he has had his share of failures. Raheem connects well with the players and they play for him. He is not part of a revolving coaching carousel.
Secondly, our special teams has been much better lately, but we may have seen the best from Basacia anyway. Only a small handful of touchdown runbacks, etc, etc.
I see no problem for us in the coaching change.
January 12th, 2011 at 9:52 am
To me the telling sign was Rich’s praise for Gruden and Turner. He did mention Raheem. I agree there must be more to it to take the same position.
January 12th, 2011 at 9:58 am
Of course this wasn’t a crack. It didn’t remotely sound like one. That quote shouldn’t even be news.
January 12th, 2011 at 10:04 am
I think a boat load of money is the reason plus a chance for advancement. There isn’t much chance here at the present time. As for uprooting his family, has he? I would leave them here and try to save as much of Calif state income tax as possible, which is another boat load of money. We do have jets now.
January 12th, 2011 at 10:17 am
Rich had a great run in Tampa and served the team well. Only wishing the best for him in his new job.
January 12th, 2011 at 10:26 am
Joe and fellas:
You picked the wrong quote. Read the Times article in today’s fishwrap. Biasaccia said (paraphrase) – having had the opportunity to work with a great football mind in John Gruden, this gives me the chance to work with another great football mind in Norv Turner.
Um, who is left out? He didn’t even mention Rah, Rah or that he was appreciative of the opportunity to work with Rah Rah etc. He mentions the guy he worked with three years ago but not the guy he worked with yesterday. That shows what established NFL coaches think about Rah being handed this job.
This speaks volumes in two ways: One, the Glazers weren’t willing to pay him enough to overcome the professional insult of having to work underneath Rah Rah. Two, he has very little respect for Rah Rah professionally being that he took a demotion from Associate Head Coach/ Special Teams to Special Teams with San Diego.
We will miss coach Rich, but we are going to start seeing more defections. It appears that Van Pelt wants out, Wash will be gone, and older established coaches won’t want Rah as their boss and will be concerned about his history of canning/scapegoating assistants.
January 12th, 2011 at 10:28 am
Great point OB! the salary must be substantially higher to overcome Cal state taxes if he is bringing the fam.
January 12th, 2011 at 10:35 am
JD,
I disagree. Special Teams are more than just a “small handful of touchdown returns”. I think this will hurt the Bucs. Good luck Rick and thanks for the great ST coaching, we had the last few years.
January 12th, 2011 at 10:41 am
I dont think Bisaccia is that dumb.
January 12th, 2011 at 10:42 am
Thanks for all your hard work Rick…. Good luck in sandiego they really need you!

=============================
Oar is absolutely right. Field position is highly underrated, especially with a young and developing offense.
January 12th, 2011 at 11:25 am
Definitely not sinister – departing coaches as a rule refrain from negative comments about their previous employer because GM’s/HC’s won’t hire a guy that might trash their organization.
January 12th, 2011 at 11:26 am
Thomas:
LOL Wash is defecting for reasons of his own doing. 🙂
January 12th, 2011 at 11:29 am
JD:
Rich was restless and was wanting to leave for a few years, preferably not as a special teams coach. He openingly pined for the USF opening last year and Joe’s guessing that rubbed people at One Buc Palace the wrong way.
A birdie told Joe that he was wanting a long-term deal, but that wasn’t coming, hence his leaving.
January 12th, 2011 at 11:30 am
Hire,
I hope Stukes paid attention or picked up some of what Rick Bisaccia had, cause this young team’s special teams will need it!
January 12th, 2011 at 11:33 am
Joe,
What about the compliment of Gruden and Turner but silence re Rah? You have to assume that was intentional. Rich is a smart guy and knows how that statement will be interpreted.
January 12th, 2011 at 11:35 am
Joe,
Your little birdie is condraticting, “the restless and wanting to leave for a few years” aspect? He wants to leave, but wanted a long term deal? I think that little birdie is a really a dodo bird! LOL!
January 12th, 2011 at 11:39 am
I read into this a little differently. I think Basaccia stayed after Gruden was sacked only because he felt that Rah would fail, and then after that first 3-13 season he thought one more season would be the end of Rah and he would move right into that HC job. 2010 proved that theory wrong. He’s on the inside and see’s what is coming with the Bucs and must have seen that there will be slim to no hope of him moving up for a long time. Do I think that there is animosity there? Most definately, and I’m sure that he has real issues with Rah, being his underling for so long suddenly becoming his boss essentially. He’s also an obvious “Grudens boy” and probably held some ill will held over from the firing of his man. IMO.
January 12th, 2011 at 11:45 am
Or maybe Rich just doesn’t think that Rah is responsible for 10-6? Maybe Rich thinks that the emergence of Freeman and the weaka– schedule inflated the win-loss record.
Remember, 6 wins against the NFC South and Panthers with qb’s like: Troy Smith, Whitehurst, Max Hall, Clausen, Moore etc.
It is possible to place credit for the improvement in places other than the HC. For example, the offense improved dramatically – are you really giving Rah Rah credit for that?
January 12th, 2011 at 11:45 am
San Diego had the #1 Offense and Defense and horrific special teams .. Add it up .. If the ST gets on track they should be a Big Time AFC threat …
Plus with Norv Turner being the HC/OC type maybe Rich could get the OC title while Turner calls the plays for his resume ..
It was an opportunity for growth with a good team .. Not a conspiracy that all the Meat Heads in here make it out to be ..
January 12th, 2011 at 11:46 am
This guy will be missed by Rah. Rah talked with him often during the game. You have to question what kind of contract did they offer him….1 year deal with a small raise and a bunch of lockout language. I wonder if SD skipped the lockout language and moved forward with getting a good coach …just saying !
January 12th, 2011 at 12:15 pm
The proper angle on this story is about him being jilted for a head coaching job. He didn’t get USF and probably wasn’t considered for our opening two eyars ago. I agree the field position issue is very iportant. But it would be nice to see even more singnificant gains on ST. I wish him the best but don’t feel we are losing in this move, esepcially if he had hard feelings while here. Players detect that and we need peoply that want to be here in our system.
January 12th, 2011 at 12:33 pm
I can’t recall every hearing about a SP Teams coach getting a Head Coaching gig so I don’t bye the idea that he’s the next guy up in San Diego if Turner’s fired. This move was all about money and a new challenge in turning around the worst SP Teams in the league. That, and like somebody else already said, I’m sure he feels slighted by the Glazers for not interviewing him for the Head Coaching job.
January 12th, 2011 at 12:48 pm
oar:
Bisaccia was getting restless here. Maybe he thought he had hit his ceiling? Wanted new challenges?
January 12th, 2011 at 12:59 pm
gotbbucs,
“I can’t recall every hearing about a SP Teams coach getting a Head Coaching gig”
Well, one team is still in the playoffs, that has a headcoach used to be special team coordinator. Harbaugh, with the Ravens, was 9 year special teams coordinator with Phildelphia Beagles. As a matter of a fact, he was special teams coordinator for most of his coaching career, even at the college level.
January 12th, 2011 at 1:06 pm
Joe,
It’s cool and I understand/get it. I just thought your birdie made a contracting statement.
I know the playoffs are still going on, but keep up the great work for these long boring off-seasons!
January 12th, 2011 at 1:24 pm
Thomas, the only problem is you are taking a stance that someone outside the NFL takes…Winning against teams with losing records and back up qbs etc. I have never heard any NFL coach say any team only won because of this. They say every game is hard, and you have to play each game to win. They know that any team can beat you on any given day. Also, again, everybody thought those teams would beat Tampa bay, which means TB over achieved. There is no luck, theis team created their wins. You really need to find a team you like, and stick with them for a while.
I am with OAR though, this may hurt us. He is a great coach, but the next guy may even be better. I believe many of the same people thought Olsen would be awful, but he proved to do pretty well this year…Oh, and Jags was fired again…
January 12th, 2011 at 1:36 pm
At this point, I don’t really care one way of the other. He’s gone, good luck, when we play you, your an enemy. I have faith in Dominick and Raheem. I think they will do fine and probably saw this coming for quite a while. People move on. Belichick lost coach after coach and never really missed a beat. The couple interviews of Rich that I heard in the past lead me to believe he was great guy and coach. He didn’t strike ma as a Bridge Burner like some in the NFL. My guess is that he imparted as much of his wisdom in Stukes as the young coach could fathom. I think Ronde said it best that the Sun rises and sets on Josh Freeman. He will make them all great in time.
January 12th, 2011 at 1:52 pm
i did not know that oar. well, i guess there is one example. either way, this is already water under the bridge imo. i hope they get the damn cba taken care of so business can carry on as usual.
January 12th, 2011 at 1:54 pm
Bigmac…great way to look at it. I believe you are right.
January 12th, 2011 at 1:58 pm
“It is possible to place credit for the improvement in places other than the HC. For example, the offense improved dramatically – are you really giving Rah Rah credit for that?”
A head coach gets credit for the improvement of a team, because he is ultimately in charge of everything. By the same token, he is the one blamed for anything that goes wrong. You sure don’t have a problem blaming him for that. Again, you can’t have it both ways. If you don’t think Raheem gets any credit for Freeman, you are crazy. You don’t think he sits in with him in the QB meetings? You don’t think they talk strategy together on a daily basis? They work together every day. Freeman is extremely talented, but he has been coached very well in Tampa. That credit can be taken by Van Pelt, Olsen, and Morris, and probably a few others. To suggest otherwise is plain wrong.
As for Bissacia, he wanted to leave last year. His contract was up, so he got out. Maybe he respected Raheem, maybe he didn’t. Who cares? Not every coach gets along with the head coach. Thats a reality throughout the league. You are looking to far into it.
January 12th, 2011 at 2:00 pm
I mean, you are looking TOO far into it.
January 12th, 2011 at 2:02 pm
gotbbucs,
Ditto on the CBA! Get’r done!
January 12th, 2011 at 2:07 pm
Thanks oar.
January 12th, 2011 at 2:28 pm
John Harbaugh was a ST coach and the Ravens hired him as their HC. And he has been excellent for them. Playoffs three straight years and wins on the road in the playoffs.
It was time for Bisaccia to move on.
SD needed a ST coach in the worse way possible and I’m sure he got well compensated.
Moving the daughter and son because of cheerleader and football, they play high school football in Calif. too.
January 12th, 2011 at 2:31 pm
Jags was fired from the UFL as HC.
The CBA needs to get finished, fast. Or there may be a long lockout and the golden goose will be putting out a lot less.
And Pay for view is going to be the way of the future in the NFL….just wait…it will happen.
Hell, they have it now with the NFL RedZone Channel…which you have to pay for.
January 12th, 2011 at 2:31 pm
John Harbaugh was one of the very, very, very few special teams coaches elevated to head coach and may very well be the first one.
Last time Joe heard of a special teams coach being named head coach was the immortal Frank Ganz. Feel free to look up his record.
January 12th, 2011 at 2:37 pm
How many coaches were elevated straight from D-Backs with virtually no experience coordinating or head coaching anything?
I know Rah had one marginal season under the now unemployed Ron Prince at K State.
Rah was elevated from D Backs Coach to Head Coach, why is it outlandish to assume that one could be promoted from S.T. to HC like Harbaugh?
However, Rich left for $ and the embarrassment of working under Rah.
January 12th, 2011 at 2:38 pm
No surprise here. Who didn’t feel he would move on after this year? Omitting Rah with the great coaches doesn’t seem like a slight; dude is a sophomore head coach. If he just heaped praise and histrionics on everyone who came his way he would sound like Gruden talking about quarterbacks.
January 12th, 2011 at 2:39 pm
Hey, not too many D backs coches get hired as HC either, but we just went 10 – 6 with one.
January 12th, 2011 at 2:49 pm
Turner is not a great Coach. As a head Coach he has had nothing but Luxary Cars and made them look like Ford Tempos. Just another coach trying to be a cordinator
January 12th, 2011 at 2:50 pm
You just just finished third in your division, missed the playoffs again, and have lost 19 of your last 32 games with one!
January 12th, 2011 at 2:54 pm
Yeah Joe, why didn’t you finish the comment?
“This is a tremendous opportunity for me to be part of a winning organization and work with Norv Turner,” Bisaccia said. “There’s a real opportunity here to win it all. I’ve worked with Jon Gruden, and now I have the opportunity to work with Norv. These are two of the best coaching minds in football. I’m really looking forward to it.”
-St. Pete Times
I mean, how could he have forgotten about Raheem since he just finished 2 seasons with him?
January 12th, 2011 at 2:57 pm
I think Rich could not (even though the unwritten rule among coaches is to never criticize and always compliment each other) get the words “great coaching mind” and Rah out in the same sentence!
January 12th, 2011 at 4:15 pm
Thomas said “You just just finished third in your division, missed the playoffs again, and have lost 19 of your last 32 games with one!”.
It sounds like you are not with us, I knew you were not a fan. You are a broken record…third in the devision, 19 and 32, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH. many great coaches started slow, but you do not seem to want to hear anything along those lines. I am a big fan of Gruden, just like you are, but he had a few really bad years here as well. 3rd in the devision at 10-6 shows what a tough devision the south is.
I hope gruden lands a coaching job, so we can be rid of you. I have never heard of a person routing for the coach not the team, but here you are.
January 12th, 2011 at 4:15 pm
Morris could always point out that he is a HC, Thomas you are a true jack arse.
January 12th, 2011 at 5:30 pm
I wish I could remember what place we finished in our division this year. Could anyone volunteer than information? I guess the 400 times Thomas has said it is just not enough. You really need to get some new material.
Morris was a pretty good DC at Kansas State, don’t know what the hell you are talking about. They improved in every defensive category. If I remember right, they beat Texas that year too. But I know you love to spit an opinion with absolutely no facts to back it up. That’s what you do, and you do it so well.
Get a life dude, seriously. Don’t you have anything better to do than repeat yourself over and over about how much you dislike the head coach of our team? You and Buc You are the only 2 singing that same ‘ol sad tune. Even Eric, who was probably the harshest critic of Raheem in the past, has opened his eyes and seen the truth. One would think there may be something else blinding you. Nah, that couldn’t be the case.
January 12th, 2011 at 5:36 pm
McBuc:
A) I did not object to Gru being fired, just who he was replaced by;
B) If Gru lands a coaching job elsewhere I will remain a Bucs fan.
You say that you do not root for a coach but a team, that in part is true. Examples are abundant of fans still rooting for the team on Sunday but not in agreement with its leadership: Ron Zook’s era with UF comes to mind.
My issue with you sheep is that you act like we won the super bowl this year abd give almost all of the credit to Rah. I see Dom and Free as mostly responsible and believe that Rah is not qualified for the position.
Maybe, if they had a more qualified HC they would have beat Detroit at home and made the playoffs. I don’t accept the premise that this team is best situated in the hands of this guy.
January 12th, 2011 at 6:14 pm
So because we lost 1 game we should have won, he shouldn’t be the coach? That’s the basis for your argument? The credit is due to Rah, Dominik, Freeman, the assistant coaches, and the players. That’s why it’s called a team. They all get credit. To exclude the head coach is just plain ridiculous. He is the right fit for this team at this time. They all play hard for him, week in and week out.
January 12th, 2011 at 6:24 pm
Just when you thought thing were going along nice and smooth, Thomas the next Arizona Crazy Gunman, sticks a wrench in the fan. Please get help now.
January 12th, 2011 at 8:57 pm
I smell Drama in Tampa, sure looks like something is going on with all the coaches leaving or wanting out.
January 12th, 2011 at 10:45 pm
Drama? Really? You want to be a head coach, and the head coach you work for is 15 years younger than you. He also is a leading candidate for coach of the year. Seems like Rich had zero upward mobility here. Being 2nd in line to Norv Turner is just a matter of when, not if. Same as being 2nd in line to the Lil midget. Sooner than later, he gets fired for ruining the team- taDa- instant head Coach! Rich wasn’t gonna be the head Coach here, so he needed to leave. Good luck Rich, you did a great job here. Hope you get that HC job soon, you’ve earned it!
January 13th, 2011 at 3:32 am
his new name is “rich ballsackia”….act like you know…adam from ny
January 13th, 2011 at 3:53 am
Thomas,
Don’t you know from your professional scouting experience that coaches leave every year? You are really getting desperate to assume that Van Pelt being in consideration for a college head coaching job is a result of him not getting along with Raheem Morris? Do you know how stupid that sounds? The purpose for 99% of assistant coaches is to eventually be a head coach. The best coaches have their assistants leave every year. So I guess you really think Raheem is a great coach! And you are even more stupid to think that assistants wouldn’t want to work for him because he is young or because he has fired previous assistants. The idiocy in that comment is hilarious. Coaches don’t decline jobs because they are afraid to get fired. If they do, they are not a good coach to begin with. Think about what you write before you embarrass yourself anymore than you already have.
January 13th, 2011 at 7:19 am
I was going to reply, but Hawaiian, BigMac, and good ole Capt Tim (welcome back) said it all.
January 13th, 2011 at 9:07 am
Thanks McBuc!
