Jermaine Phillips Is Out There

The Bucs were forced to use their third-string free safety Sunday, 27-year-old Sabby Piscitelli.
It didn’t go so well, although Sabby employed great trickery and savvy that drew a penalty and saved the Bucs a touchdown. Perhaps he has a future across the pond.
After reading esteemed Tampa Tribune NFL writer eye-RAH! Kaufman’s brief look at former Buccaneers today, Joe was surprised to learn that Jermaine Phillips played this fall for Omaha of the UFL. Joe was unaware that the longtime Bucs linebacker safety and Raheem Morris favorite was recovered from his shattered thumb and back on the field.
After more research, Joe sees that Phillips, 31, had an interception for Omaha a few weeks ago, as well.
Joe hopes the Bucs at least take a look at Phillips, assuming he’s healthy, and consider him for the final five weeks of the season. The guy knows the defense and is a proven commodity.
Only reported by JoeBucsFan.com — shame on the local scribes — all domestic violence charges were dropped against Phillips last year. So that shouldn’t be a factor.
Phillips might only be good for a couple of games. But that might be enough to help the Bucs reach their lofty goals.

I hope they do sign him. He’s better than the alternatives and knows the system.

Very interesting notion, but a quick google news search reveals that the NFL suspended him for 1 game back on Nov 6th while he was playing with Omaha, for reasons unknown: http://www.profootballweekly.com/2010/11/06/nfl-suspends-ex-buccaneer-phillips
So, even if they did sign him, they’d be without him for 1 game. I’d still be interested.

Phillips likes to hit running backs hard. It would be nice to see a run stuffer. His injuries in the past kept him off the field though. He might last 5 weeks. His knowledge of the D is good too. That way he can put Sabby back where he belongs. The bench. Phillips can blow past Ruud on runs plays and stuff the RB as well.

and the delay in bringing him is?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?…..maybe Sabby has a future on One Life to Live as an actor but showed he is over matched for the NFL……see ya next year in the AFL or UFL……if you’re lucky pal…..

sabby’s still a valuable special teams player. so hes not the greatest safety but he helps the team in other areas so lets chill with all the bashing

He hasn’t played football in two years and would be nowhere close to being ready to play. Plus he’s like 50. We’d be better off giving Lynch or Barber a chance at FS and looking for a promising DB on another teams roster or given this Anderson kid a shot.
Phillips is the past.

The delay in bringing him in is that he was GUILTY of the domestic violence. He did a pre-trial intervention because he had no previous record. He was still guilty. Besides I think the Bucs can find someone with more upside than a 31 year old playing in the UFL at this point. Cato June plays for that team too. Maybe we should bring him back too? LOL. Give me a break. Michaeal Pittman is in the UFL also. Are we seeing a trend here? Let me point it out for you. Everyone in the UFL is a has been or a never was.

Joe I wish Dom thought like you did. Playing him at linebacker was a foolish move but he was a great safety in the Tampa 2. Why not? What is there to lose when you have Sabby out of position on every play and if he is not out of position he is taking bad angles, whiffing on tackles, the list goes on and on and on……. Dom needs to do something soon or our playoff chances will whiff just like a Sabby tackle!!!!

Holy Crap I thought the Sabby being cut comment was a joke. I’ll admit he has been a huge disappointment but didn’t see that coming with our lack of depth at safety.

I agree…. bring back Phillips. We’re trying to make a playoff push right now. Phillips is a veteran who played very well as a starter here for many years and he knows this defense. Look, I like Corey Lynch also, but we need some good talent as our depth to give him a break, not more practice squad players. I’d rather sign Phillips more than Asante or Anderson.

I trust that Raheem has a plan in place. I don’t think he would have cut Idiot Boy without having a replacement ready to go. Maybe this Anderson kid or Ronde, even Myron Lewis. So far Raheem/Dominick have made many choices that have helped the team with these picks off the street, so to speak.

lets trust in coach rah here…..the secondary is and always will be his specialty…..he will patch this together to function somehow….i know he is a head coach and a d-coordinator…however first and foremost he is a secondary guy…….make it work coach rah…….adam from ny

Since he played in the UFL, he’s subject to the $150,000 transfer fee required in order to be signed by NFL teams. No NFL team has done that yet, and no team (reportedly) wants to be the first to pay because it will set a bad precedent.
