Ravens Nose Tackle Brings Up The Punch

November 27th, 2010

Maybe Joe’s being too sensitive? Maybe Joe’s just so fired up and filled with hope that the Bucs can match the smashmouth football of the Ravens that Joe’s ready to brawl right now?

Regardless, Joe was a bit pissed off by the way Ravens nose tackle Kelly Gregg mentioned rookie LeGarrette Blount’s famous punch in college last year that cost him dearly at the NFL Draft.

Gregg’s quote came in a Baltimore Sun story about the Ravens’ struggles against powerful running backs.

“[Blount’s] got some jumping in him,” Gregg said. “Also, you’ve got to watch out for that right hook.”

Blount, at least, has gotten Gregg’s attention.

“He’s a good young back. It’s hard to believe a good young back like that didn’t get drafted,” Gregg said. “But he’s definitely given them a spark.”

Part of Joe wants to see Blount deliver Gregg some nasty punishment on the field Sunday. For Joe, bringing up the punch in a joking way is not cool.

Joe can’t remember a time when an opposing team’s player — for any team — referenced an opponent’s life-changing misdeed to the media. Perhaps it’s fair game because it happened on the field in front of TV cameras.

Again, maybe Joe’s too touchy this morning. But Joe still wants Gregg to pay.

oh c’mon joe, it aint that bad. recognizing someones devastating left hook should not make you feel inferior by any means.

i didn’t sit and do the interview there with him (gregg) so who knows? it’s just a quick chopped up quote. regardless, sounds fine to me.

Im quick to find any reasont to dislike an opponent to; however, this isnt like the Micheal Vick thing….I think inside the locker room, Blount teammates probably give him a hard time about that punch, I don’t think its a big deal to rib him a little.

Vick on the other hand…with the dogfighting…totally different story.

I actually laughed when I read that quote.

I don’t believe in the “too soon” sentiment.

  4. Capt.Tim Says:

Lol! Well if Kelly is that impressed with the right hook, meybe Blount can give him one of his very own, during the first pileup!! That way Kelly can tell all of friends how he has his own collectors item right hook injury! As long as we don’t get flagged, I don’t see why not! Lol

Sounds like a Man Crush to me Joe ? I don’t think Gregg was being disrespectful. He came right back to admit it was a mistake he was not drafted. Jeff Fisher of Tennessee actually apologized for allowing Blount to get away. To some Titan Fans, Blount was the next Eddie George. Got to give it UP for Mark Dominick, this man is rebuilding Tampa with practice squad pickups!

“To some Titan Fans, Blount was the next Eddie George.” – Apple Roof Cleaning

Were those the Titans fans that showed up to the stadium in a short bus and safety helmets? Your statement is completely ludicrous. I like Blount as much as the next guy, but Eddie George?? Calling him the next Eddie George is ridiculous.

  7. gitarlvr Says:

@HGO- Your right. Blount has more breakaway speed and big play ability than Eddie George did.

  8. RustyRhino Says:

my hope is that the scoreboard is the way to make the Ravens feel Blount hitting them again and again and again.

  9. Capt.Tim Says:

Still liked my idea the best!

  10. JDouble Says:

Only HB you can honestly compare Blount to is Jim Brown.

I’m not saying Blount is as good as Jim Brown. He’s not. Jim Brown could do everything and anything great, including running, blocking, catching, and even throwing. He was a true freak of nature.

However, when you’re are just talking about pure running style, there really is no arguing the comparison. Hop on youtube and watch some old Jim Brown highlights, then watch Blounts’ 40 years apart, but so similiar. It’s funny, but when I watch the jim Brown highlights I keep expecting him to hurdle guys like Blount, but he never does.

  11. JDouble Says:

Although if we saw Blount do some of this to Ray Lewis tomorrow I wouldn’t complain….

I don’t see anything wrong with a running back knocking out a man 50lbs heavier than him with one shot he clipped that lame on the chin and he fell down like Gerry Cooney from an Ali shot. I love the spirit that The Object has this guy has a mean streak in him

  13. Jamie Says:

I have no problem with joking around about the punching. Matthew Berry does it every week when praising Blount’s skills. Gregg’s comments don’t strike me as belittling, so I’m not too pissed about them.

  14. The White Tiger Says:

Looks to me that they’re trying to get the rookie emotional. Best way to answer this psyche job is to stay disciplined – while smashing into the correct hole each time LaGarrette’s name is called.

Smash mouth football would be nice, but only if it works.

Let LeGarrette Blount do the talking…after the win.
