Bucs Opening Up Playbook
November 15th, 2010Since the Arizona game, Joe has noticed one thing: the Bucs have weapons.
Joe has noticed that because offensive coordinator Greg Olson has enabled a chapter or two of his playbook. As a result, the Bucs offense has jump-started, writes eye-RAH! Kaufman of the Tampa Tribune.
“He’s doing a great job with his play-calling,” tight end John Gilmore said about Olson following Sunday’s 31-16 triumph against the Panthers. “There’s still some things we need to tighten up, but we’ve got defenses off balance right now.”After averaging 5.0 yards per offensive snap in their first six games, the Bucs have improved their productivity markedly in the past three weeks, averaging 6.8 yards as Olson opened up the attack.
In Joe’s eyes this needs to continue. As Joe has written before, the Bucs defense is simply undependable and there’s no way of fixing it now. Jack Lambert of Reggie White not walking through the front doors of One Buc Palace.
If the Bucs are to reach that “Race to 10” and perhaps a playoff berth, it’s going to have to win shootouts. The Bucs clearly have the horses to do just that.

How about the designed role out QB run with Josh Johnson? That was cool to see. I think JJ is a dynamic player and it’s good to see him get involved.
November 15th, 2010 at 9:43 am
The Bucs”dynamic offense” will have to win Shootouts to carry our “Weak”defense. Wow! I’ve been watching the Bucs since their first year. Didn’t see that coming! NEVER thought I’d see that! Times sure are changing around One Buc, aren’t they! You just believe that every time Freeman walks on the field, we will probably score. Just unbelievable!

Question – if the Bucs running playbook different now then it was last year?
If the playbook is the same then what’s different:
1. Players –
2. Running Back
3. Opponents
This is important because look at what happened to kansas City. they started the season 3-0 and were 5-2 at the end of October. Now they’re 5-4 and got schooled by the Bronco’s yesterday.

Greg Olson has taken a lot of heat for his play-calling in the past and I was one of his biggist critics. But he’s proven to me that he’s more than a Gruden clone.Maybe the lack of weapons prior to this year influenced his conservative play-calling.Whatever the reason for opening up the playbook,he’s doing an excellent job as this team continues to mature.

TaDa- for your entertainment pleasure, the Comedic “town foolery” stylings of Mr. Sucky!- ok, Sucky, I’m in the mood to scoff at your flawed logic and horribly wrong misconceptions of Football. Once again, sucky, dive into the arena of wit, and be prepared to leave battered and defeated- yet again!! Ok, hit me with your best shot- what ignorance can you offer up today, I’m ready!! Let’s see- what’s different? Christ, Sucky, the players are different. Josh Freeman starts at Qb- not Leftwich! Mike Williams and Arrelious Benn are our WRs, not Maurice Stovall and Michael Clayton. Our Rbs are Blount and Lorig, not Caddy and Graham. Our Dts are Miller and McCoy, nor Sims and Ryan. So as even a blind ass could see,Sucky, the difference is talent! Last year was still the dregs from the previous midget regime. This year, it’s new talent with skill popping up everywhere, from Rookie Guards, to rookie fullbacks. The team last year had no great talents( except Ronde). No Probowlers-nada! This team will have a few probowlers. Plus a ton of all rookie teamers, plus probably rookie of the year Mike Williams- who looks like the second coming of Michael Irving or Lynn Swann! So yeah, Sucky -it’s the players- the TALENTED players- any other obvious things you need explained to you? Lmao at sucky

I see a lot of differences between this year and last year as a team. I see a lot of differences between this team beginning the year and this team now.
Blount was freshly plucked off the Titans practice squad to begin the year, Benn was still learning the Z position, Freeman had a fractured thumb. The playbook is opening up as we are able to add new components to it. As players are ready for it. That’s how this team is improving each week.
The Chiefs, they had everything in place at the beginning of the year. They weren’t going to get better as the year went on. If anything, teams were gonna figure it out sooner or later, and start shutting them down. Difference is we’re adding more each week, which makes it more difficult to game plan for. Shut down what worked last week, and we’ve got a new wrinkle that will beat you. That’s the difference. And the more weapons we get involved, the more difficult it will be to stop.
November 15th, 2010 at 10:21 am
He was able to show his skills as a O-coord. because we finally started running the ball in the beginning of games. Since Caddy wasnt giving us 2 yd. losses, we could actually use play actions, bootlegs, etc. and now Olsen looks like a genious. Funny how a running game will do that.
November 15th, 2010 at 10:23 am
Lil help Joe, please! For some reason, I keep getting strange double post, can ya erase my duplicates- thanks!
November 15th, 2010 at 10:25 am
By the way-where is Eric with his mid-season pick report?I seem to recall when he wrote down our picks that he would be here and wondered if we would..I know that Capt and myself picked the Bucs to finish with 8 wins and we were the biggist kool-aide drinkers in the crowd. So come on Eric-lets see how everyone’s doing since you made a point of writing all this down. You’re probably waiting for that long losing streak to appear before you come out of hiding but you better hope it happens soon because the season is disappearnig almost as quickly as you did.
November 15th, 2010 at 10:52 am
LOL Lakeland Bob… funny how these haters run away after a loss. Don’t even have the dignity to take the lumps like a man.
November 15th, 2010 at 10:55 am
*run away after a win, (obviously).
November 15th, 2010 at 11:49 am
YEAH!! FIRE GREG OLSON!!!
November 15th, 2010 at 11:54 am
but lets be fair Gary,no matter how hard it is Mr Lucky is finding ways to complain and is very consistant no matter how crazy it sounds. My hat off to him,but its not that hard to say ,boy was I wrong about morris and dom, there doing agreat job.
November 15th, 2010 at 12:01 pm
Well its pretty obvious why the play calling and offense are more explosive now, its called having a running game.
Blount has opened everything up and it also takes time for rookies to learn the playbook. Sure glad I didn’t have my head buried in the sand and was able to see the future was bright with this team. Great Job calling the game Olson.
November 15th, 2010 at 12:14 pm
Lol! As a fellow Lakelander, I think Bob and myself have proven where the hotbed of football knowledge is at! Good ole Polk County! Lol. I remember the abuse we took when we both predicted 8-8! Everybody was bashing us, including some recent additions to the bandwagon, who I won’t mention, cause the Capt. Is a very forgiving guy! Lakeland Bob and I are looking pretty smart right now! Experts! We’re frickin’ experts I tell ya!! Lol
November 15th, 2010 at 12:27 pm
And then we’d welcome Mr. Lucky into the ” Smart Guy” club, and his whole life would change! Wow, just picture that, Mr. Lucky! Come on, you know you wanna drink some Koolaide, and hang out with the cool kids! The haters clubhouse is pretty lonely these days! Sounds like a TV evangelist! Doesn’t he have ta buy a book or something to change sides like that?
November 15th, 2010 at 1:00 pm
Capt you still crack me up.Damn glad I was in the right club and didn’t have to trade insults with the Master. It looks like we may have been to conservative with our predictions, but who saw these rookies developing this rapidly.I thought it would take another year to reach ten wins, but its very possible this year.Everyone thought Rah was crazy when he came out with the race to ten,but now the man’s looking like a genious. Our coach has turned into a master motivater and has his player’s believing they can play with anybody.
November 15th, 2010 at 1:35 pm
I have been saying that we are an 8-8 all along as well… but I have to admit I thought our defense would be a lot better and our offense would not be this good. I think we can get niner 10 wins now, but that’s mostly because the nfc is very weak
November 15th, 2010 at 6:00 pm
Lakeland Bob, My friend. It’s all about having a Lil faith in people. What’s wrong with believing in somebody, who’s working hard and trying to do the right thing? It was obvious that both Josh Freeman and Raheem Moriss were working really hard this summer, trying to live up to peoples expectations. If I’m going to be wrong, or look foolish, let it be for believing in those guys. Not the T.Os., or Randy Moss, or Brandon Marshal types, but the guys doing it the old fashion way. Hard work! Sweat! Most of my life, I’ve dealt with the worst types. I will really only regret that, if I lose the faith to believe in a hard working, decent person. This season is almost lke a validation of honest , hard working Underdogs rising to the top! It’s one of those once in a life time things that you really can’t believe you’re seeing. You’re right Bob, even we never saw this coming!
November 15th, 2010 at 7:47 pm
Sorry to bust your lovefest but the MAJOR reason for the 6-3 Bucs is their schedule.
Two wins against 1-8 hapless Carolina Panthers
Win against the 2-7 hapless Cincy Bengles
Win against the 3-6 Browns
Win against the 3-6 Cards
Win against the 4-5 Rams
So the Bucs look REALLY, REALLY good against teams with a combined 13-32
What happens when the Bucs play teams with winning records? let’s see:
New Orleans at 6-3
Atlanta at 6-3
Pittsburg at 6-3 What did the Bucs do?
November 15th, 2010 at 7:51 pm
To be fair all I’m trying to do is be REAL.
Oh, Mike I already did this earlier but to make you happy I’ll post it again – Raheem deserves to be around for another year to continue doing what he started.
I even wrote that if the Bucs make the playoffs (even as a wildcard) then yes Raheem SHOULD be nominated for Coach of the Year.
Doesn’t change the FACTS/STATS
No matter how much koolaid you drink the defense is still rated 31 against the rush and 8th against the pass – 22nd overall
So how come the Bucs are 6-3?

I actually like that statement and agree that no one saw this coming. The problem is this – the Bucs schedule plays an important role in the Bucs ‘resurgence’
If the Bucs had played in the AFC South, NFC East, NFC North they wouldn’t be 6-3. Sorry but that’s the truth.
I have to agree with BamBam on this – the Bucs are getting better each and every week. There is IMPROVEMENT and THAT’s great!
November 15th, 2010 at 8:12 pm
Schedule has something to do with “it” alright,
If you don’t play the schedule your given you lose every single game…
Come on this is not like we are playing junior college teams this is the NFL and every week you have underdogs win and primer teams lose.
Like it or not we are 6 wins (no matter how or who we played) 3 losses (no matter how or who we played) we drove the field on the 7-2 Falcons and had the ball on the 2 but we failed to get a first down and score, what if we had never put ourselves in that position? Then you might have some thing to say.
November 15th, 2010 at 10:00 pm
The Bucs schedule this year is like affirative action. It gave the Bucs an easier schedule than say Minnesota or Dallas. What we do with that opportunity…well
The only thing about affirmative action is this – are you there because you really are that good or was the standard lowered for some and not others?
Let’s see what happens when the Bucs play: Baltimore, Atlanta, New Orleans.
November 15th, 2010 at 10:02 pm
ROTFLMAO!!!
November 15th, 2010 at 10:17 pm
The Bucs play the same teams that the Saints and the Falcons play.So if you think our schedule is soft, guess what,so is theirs.Besides, nobody is saying the Bucs are an elite team. The point is they are improving faster than anyone anticipated and they will be a force in the near future.I’ll keep drinking my kool-aide and you can go ahead and wait until you have your hard core proof to jump on the bandwgon.By then it will be obvious to a blind man.
November 16th, 2010 at 12:57 am
@ Lakeland Bob- +1
Yes the Saints and Falcs get to play the NFC west too!! Oh yeah and the Saints somehow found a way to LOSE to MAX FREAKING HALL.
@Mr. Lucky- The rematch is coming against the Saints. Josh played well in the first game but we failed to score because of the lack of running game. Legarrette Blount will have a lot to say about the rematch.
November 16th, 2010 at 9:54 am
Ok, Mr. Lucky. If you are saying the Bucs have Struggled against the NFL elite, I’ll give you that. The question I offer to you is -why? We have beaten teams, that beat the Elite Teams we lost to. Are those teams that much better than us? I’ll give you some insight. This team is starting between 7-9 rookies. And playing 12-14. I can’t find a team in NFL history that has played that many rookies every week- ever! The biggest reason we lost to the Steelers, Saints, and Falcons is that they may be better than us- meybe! The reason we were blown out by the Steelers and the Saints? The Legendary Pittsburg Steelers and SuperBowl champion Saints? I think they intimidated our young team. I don’t believe they are that much Better. We have a bunch of kids. They grew up hearing about the Steelers. I think it scared them a Lil bit. Guess what, Mr.Lucky. I don’t think they will be scared next time. Next time, meybe the Steelers and Saints should be scared. This team is growing up and improving every week. Veteran teams can’t say that. this team isn’t the best team in the NFL- but it could be very soon. That’s what’s exciting
