Fans Turn On “Wayne The Whore”

October 21st, 2010

Say what you want about the wacky Manchester United fans, but their love for their club runs a lot deeper than any vendetta that some of them have against Team Glazer and its massive debt.

Superstar Manchester United player Wayne Rooney made big headlines this week saying he didn’t want to re-sign with his team because he wasn’t satisfied by ownership’s commitment to signing the biggest and best free agents, despite being offered a fat new deal for himself.

The fans could have fired back at Team Glazer for what many over there view as a tightening of team purse strings, but the opposite happened, the Manchester United fans have come after Rooney.

He’s been ripped for his lack of team loyalty, as one can see from the headline above. A Daily Mail headline called him “Wayne The Whore” (which also is a takeoff on Rooney’s hooker escapades).

It’s an interesting scenario.

What could be remotely similar in Tampa? Hypothetically, say the Bucs had a 10-6 season and offered Davin Joseph a long-term contract, but Joseph said he wasn’t signing because he wasn’t convinced the Bucs would spend enough money on other players.

Would Bucs fans tell Joseph to let the door hit him in the ass? Or would Bucs fans come after Team Glazer with a finger of blame?

I don’t think Davin Joseph is the right comparison.

I’d say it would be more like if say if won a 3 super bowls over the next few years and when Josh Freemans contract was up he said the Bucs weren’t comited to winning and that he wanted to leave.

I don’t have the time or desire to get the exact number but Manu has won Premier league championships as well as the Champions league title Multiple times since the Glazers took over.

I find it funny that he says they arent commited to signing players when they just offered him a huge contract.

    Davin who?

Come on Joe most fans don’t know most, if any of the O-linemen. With the Bucs running game in the shambles that it is I’d say hit the road jack.

Now Williams is a different story – especially if he continues scoring TD’s and gets rookie of the year!

Fans are quick to rip their own team, but just as quick to defend them. Kind of like a mama bear and her cub. And I’m talking the die hard fans…not the whine and cheese crowd.

JDOUBLE — Given that the analogy is nearly impossible given the nature of the two sports and Man U having a ton of hardware in recent years, the Davin Joseph choice is a good one. If the Bucs really did go 10-6, then he’s surely be a key component and he’s someone who has made a Pro Bowl and has been on the team roughly as long as Rooney has been with Man. u.

  5. Bucc Fan In Hawkeye Country Says:

Davin Joseph is pretty good… i wouldnt want him to be hitting any road, jack. How do you not know who Davin Joseph is.

Didn’t Culverhouse have to have a one-on-one with Paul Gruber back in the day about this same issue. i know Gruber stayed but I sure don’t remember Culverhouse building anything good afterward.

Guys getting paid vast sums of money ought to STFU and play.

Leave the sniveling about ownership to poeple like me.

  8. McBuc Says:

    Eric…Agreed

  9. Leighroy Says:

Davin Joseph is a terrible analogy. He isn’t one of the top 2 stars of his sport, he’s more like the Patrice Evra of Man U. Wayne Rooney is either the Tom Brady or Peyton Manning of soccer in the world.

Davin Joseph is a terrible analogy.

Well, Joe was going to use Barrett Ruud as an example.

  11. Phillp Says:

Funny one. When was the last time Rooney played well? How many games do you have to go back??

  12. safety Says:

    Eric,
    I love it.
    Totally agree.

  13. eric Says:

What if Rah came out and said “the Glazer’s left me hanging with a bunch or rookies, forced me to cut Brooks, and won’t invest in the team”.

“Therefore, I won’t sign an extension of my contract”.

My guess is Rah could be elected Mayor.

  14. Leighroy Says:

Haha Joe, yea Ruud wouldn’t be much better. Unfortunately I think we have no one who could qualify for a good analogy on this team. Which I think says something about this team….

  15. derf Says:

If Wayne was a whore would that make former Buc Antonio Bryant the Bitch?

    Wahh….wahhh….I can’t live on 9.7 million…..wahhhh

BTW Where is AB NOW? Hmmmmm????

  16. McBuc Says:

I thought for sure jameson would be piping in on this one…

    Derf, too funny!

  17. Jonny Says:

Davin Joseph to Wayne Rooney? Sorry Joe, but Davin sucks.
