Versatile Cornerback Trey Amos
April 14th, 2025
Ole Miss corner Trey Amos.
While the SEC had a down year last year, Joe still thinks it is the best conference top to bottom.
Be real: You think Wisconsin (currently) or Purdue or Wake Forest or Oregon State or Houston could hang with Mississippi or Arkansas? Joe sure doesn’t. There is a reason the term “SEC Speed” exists.
So that’s why Joe pays attention to SEC corners in the draft. Those dudes have to face speed week after week.
One guy that has Joe’s antennae up is Trey Amos of Ole Miss. He can play in zone or man, had 13 passes defensed and three picks last year, and is a big corner, which Bucs coach Todd Bowles prefers.
And, Amos started all 13 games for the Rebels last season.
In his draft guide “The Beast,” Dane Brugler of The Athletic likes the versatility Amos brings to the field.
SUMMARY: A one-year starter at Ole Miss, Amos was an outside cornerback in defensive coordinator Pete Golding’s diverse coverage scheme (press man, off man, zone, etc.). After three years at Louisiana, he transferred to Alabama and played behind Kool-Aid McKinstry and Terrion Arnold. After Nick Saban retired, Amos made the move to Ole Miss, where he had his breakout season with an SEC-best 16 passes defended.
A good-looking athlete, Amos is a professional pesterer with the way he reads receivers, crowds break points/catch points and never stops ball searching with his length. Whether in man or zone, he has a feel for phasing up receivers from different alignments. His timed speed is better than
his play speed, however, and there is some stiffness in his change of direction. Overall, Amos has an appetite for press, but I liked him best in zone (Cover 2, Cover 3, quarters), where he can trust his athletic instincts from depth to read and rally. His super-senior season convinced evaluators that he is a pro starter, similar in ways to Paulson Adebo.
Emory Hunt of CBS, the Czar of the Playbook, has Amos ranked as his No. 2 boundary corner in his “2025 Football Gameplan Draft Guide.”
– Top tier football I.Q. Has a great understanding of an
offensive passing game and how they are trying to attack
him. Communicates well in zone, effectively being able to
pass guys off. Matches up well vs big WRs and athletic TEs.
– In press man coverage he shows the patience and discipline
at the LOS to not fall for any of the WR foolishness off the
snap. Able to use his hands well to stay in control of the rep.
– Strong ball skills and ball awareness to attack the ball
coming his way. Very good in run support to his side as well.
The stat geeks at RAS Relative Athletic Score have Amos compared to Marlon Humphrey and Dallas Flowers. You may recall Flowers was signed by the Bucs this offseason.
A quick, tall, versatile corner? Joe would be alright with that.

Yes please. We need all the help we can get in the defensive backfield.
Swiss Cheese zone scheme must be done away with.
Time to challenge the offensive pass catchers.
And perhaps improve the playoff win percentage above .250

Careful with the facts, Dawg. There are posters who don’t like negative commentary about their emotional support coach, even when the commentary is factual. Better than .250 in the postseason, better than one game over .500, and better than the worst pass defense in the league over the last two years – all would be a nice change.

Fixing the non existent pass rush will go a long way to helping the defensive backfield.
April 14th, 2025 at 11:48 am
I have a feeling, there are a lot of really good players that Licht & Bowles can pick from in the first 3 rounds that will both fit the Bucs’ “culture” and improve our D. I don’t think we’ll be disappointed with this draft. Of course that’s a lot of feeling, thinking and hoping. Fingers crossed!

He is OK, but only the 6th rated CB. Barron may be available and a better pick IMHO.

@Aqualung
In the empire of lies, the truth is a revolutionary act.
Besides drafting well, signing free agents well, coaching well, preparing well, teams like KC and the Eagles are actually trying to win a title every season.
I do not expect to have the success of KC or the Eagles in the last 8 years.
But an honest attempt to actually try to reach the big game would be nice.
Ownership, GM, and coaches seem content with a meaningless NC South title every year.
Perhaps a boat parade is in order every time we win the division?

Aqualung I tried to reply to you but the Gestapo stepped in and censored me.

This team is a solid Pass Defense away from being a Super Bowl team. Improve the Pass Rush-better coverage in the secondary. The Offense is already there. Go BUCS!!
April 14th, 2025 at 12:19 pm
Who??
AT 19, if he gets picked I would be hugely disappointing. These guys are not a dime a dozen but maybe dollar a dozen. Get a monster DL lineman or a eye-opening Edge. They will be there at #19. This guy rouind 2-6 OK.
April 14th, 2025 at 12:21 pm
Trey sounds pretty good and could be a perfect fit for the Bucs.
PSL Bob – Agreed. So many good draft picks. Fingers crossed too!

6′ 1/2″ isn’t exactly “tall” – but is fine if Amos could jump….
Which he can’t…. 32.5″ vertical is Terrible for a CB….
A slow “shuttle” drill means he’s not exactly “quick” either…
The CB from Kentucky’s measurables are MUCH better…..

Two of the first 4 CB’s drafted in 2024 came from Toledo and Iowa. Eagles took one in the 1st Round and 1 in the 2nd, drafted for their needs, and chose the best available whether they came from Tuscaloosa or Timbuctoo. Worked out pretty well for them with one getting a pick 6 in the Super Bowl.
Eagles gave up the fewest passing yards @ 174 per game even after letting the Bucs throw for 347 early in the season. Can just imagine what their defense will look like with a second season under Fangio.
Bucs Brass can say they addressed the pass rush during free agency to justify taking a CB early but if they don’t add to the front and get the same production from Reddick that the Falcons got from Judon it’s another one and done. If they navigate their way to the post season at all.

We want beef! We want beef! Center cut, center penetration. Deep penetration. Savage and robust. As long as DBs are told to never ever let anything over their heads, we could have Revis and Deion and Polamalu and Lott in their primes and the pass defense would suck. If Todd decides to tighten it up, we’re possibly going to see better pass defense.
April 14th, 2025 at 1:59 pm
Edge with the 1st please! Corner with the 2nd!
April 14th, 2025 at 2:05 pm
Nobody is saying he will be picked @19. He’s has a late 2nd to 3rd round grade. I think he will go in the 45-55 overall pick. Why do people assume we can only discuss the 1st pick? At this point I enjoy articles on day 3 prospects. The day one and two days have already been talked about.
April 14th, 2025 at 2:20 pm
If only we had listened to some of you before, and fired Todd for ole Red. 🤣
April 14th, 2025 at 3:17 pm
I agree nobody said round 1 #19.
This guy in the 3rd maybe a steal.
Just grab Skattaboo in the 4th.
April 14th, 2025 at 4:07 pm
Just watched Kay Adam’s. Corner Malachi Sparks from Georgia has all the right stuff. And judging from Joel Klatt comments Emeka Ebuka, receiver from Ohio State and one of our Joe’s favorites, is the best receiver in the country. Both players character and leadership chart toppers. I want Skatebo also for his old school guts. Earlier this morning I commented on only wanting defense in this draft. So I’m totally lost in this draft stuff and I think so is everyone else. But it’s fun!
April 14th, 2025 at 4:21 pm
Our glaring need though is defense. We could use a little more “fire” on defense. Let’s find us at least one guy with a motor that never stops with an infectious leadership style and swagger that establishes our defensive intentions.
April 14th, 2025 at 4:45 pm
There is just defense this year, other than “best” available. Article, was garbage, as are most this time of year. EDGE, wins games. CB prevents losses. SS, a mix of the 2. That is all, via article specific. Via new coord, again, but same guys, still top 5 offense, no “needs” there. Def is glaring hole, and guessing, other than reddick, free agency, pure def draft. reddick though, with front on def, pro bowl,
April 14th, 2025 at 5:26 pm
I highly doubt all six picks will be defense. They’ll pick an offensive player or two in they’re somewhere just due to law of averages and BPA. I just want the top two picks to be defense at least. And if we don’t trade out any, four of those six should be a defensive players if not five. Would not be shocked to see a WR or OL in there somewhere. Would be shocked to see a TE or RB chosen, though
And don’t forget Tucker and Izien, Licht will find players outside of those 6 picks as well… always do
April 14th, 2025 at 5:42 pm
The best way to improve pass defense is pass rush and this draft has quite a few good ones. We need to invest earlier in one of the better edge rushers instead of reaching on a 2nd round CB lol

The toothpick from Kentucky with character issues? Uh yeah, I’m sure the Bucs will draft that guy. Eyeroll.
April 14th, 2025 at 7:17 pm
Joe in Michigan, I doubt Pickgrin wants either one. And definitely not Amos in rd 1 or 2. A lot of good can fall to us at 19. If 10 offensive and 4 edge go, that leaves a lot of prime beef with only 4 picks in front of us. The BPA we like best will almost certainly be there at some position. It certainly won’t be Amos. Could be our favor DL or the # 1 safety, or #2 corner. This is a premium pick. Easily traded if there are some takers or stay and take your guy. I’m sticking with the prediction JL has something big planned. He’s got too much money he drummed up burning a hole in his pocket. Stay tuned.
April 14th, 2025 at 8:25 pm
At Athon Sports a writer named Luke Easterling has a mock draft where he thinks that the Kansas City Chiefs will trade with us, pick 31 for pick 19, so they can grab a left tackle… given the Chiefs are absolutely horrible at that position given the SB outcome. Then he the Bucs grabbing Jihad Campbell at pick 31 and getting an extra second round pick. I’m guessing he assumes Campbell will fall due to the surgery recovery.
Out of curiosity, what do you guys think of this move? I don’t want to even guess what the odds are that this will happen. LOL
