Cody Mauch Talks Offseason, Bucs Scouts Cornering Him

March 28th, 2025

The pride of Hankinson, North Dakota, Bucs right guard Cody Mauch is a huge celebrity in his home state.

That’s why he sat down with Fargo-based WDAY-TV this week. They can’t get enough Mauch, who is pictured on a billboard in his home town.

Mauch is getting married in North Dakota this summer but he says he’s spending a lot of time training in Tampa, and playing pickleball.

The exasperation in Mauch’s voice talking about the Bucs’ 2024 season was apparent. That tough home playoff loss to the Commanders was rough on a lot of players.

“Up and down and up and down, and for a team like us, if we can just find our, I don’t know, if we can just get on a roll and stay on the roll. I think we’re a pretty hard team to stop,” Mauch said. “Yeah, it sucks to lose a tough one like that against Washington, but again, pretty cool story coming out of Washington last year.”

Mauch said he follows the NFL offseason on social media but he’s not obsessed with what the Bucs have been doing in free agency.

He’s mostly interested in the team’s re-signings. Incoming new blood isn’t his focus. “The front office is going to put us in a good spot,” he said.

The North Dakota State University pro day was an offseason stop for Mauch. That’s where two of his offensive line buddies, Grey Zabel and Mason Miller, are hoping to follow in his NFL footsteps.

Bucs scouts have been probing him for information on NDSU players, Mauch said, and he thinks that’s pretty cool.

“’Hey, what kind of guy is this?’” Mauch said, referring to what scouts are asking him. “It’s fun just to have our scouts come up and be like, ‘What’s Grey like, what’s Mason like? What are these guys like?’”

How much of a rock star is Mauch in North Dakota? His inaugural youth summer camp sold out in 15 minutes, he said. Mauch said his team is shooting for doubling the camp capacity to 600 this summer.

Grey Zabel has an outside chance to be a 1st round pick.

The Athletic does some mock drafting for different teams.

In the Minnesota mock draft, he is a possible target in the 1st.
    Same with the LA Chargers

Zabel is a left tackle from North Dakota State who they say might be the best Center prospect in the draft but also could play left guard or left tackle.

and a lot of fans too!!!!!

when your QB turns the ball over in the 4th quarter of playoffs games, its always tough…..

fix the TOs and we’re SB CHAMPS!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  3. Stevek Says:

    Geno,

I will always praise Licht for drafting trenches early and often. Thst move would spark joy. Build a tenacious wall of whoop-ass up front and dismantle your opponent’s will on the way to victory.

  4. Aqualung Says:

Just love the Cody Mauch story.

And anyone blaming a QB for a loss in which the defense never forced a punt, where the defense allowed the rookie to drive the length of the field at the end of the game (per usual) — and where 5 fewer yards given up put the Bucs into OT because it doinked the right way — is a maroon of the simplest order. Simple Jack would know better.

  5. Watch Daddy Sling It Says:

Wouldn’t be shocked with Zabel, even maybe a little move down the board to do it. Sure, there are other “needs”, but it’s a good draft for LBs, and the opportunity to elevate the OL to elite has its appeal.

  6. 813BUCBOI Says:

would love for JL to grab an OG no later than the 4th round…

    GO BUCS!!!!!

Lots of folks talk about us draft a guard type. Our bigger issue on offensive line to me is Swing Tackle. Heck is probably not a solution, if Goedeke goes down with another concussion.

Now with other needs, can’t see us prioritizing a backup swing tackle unless 4th or 5th round and that dude would be a Demar Dotson type of project.

Hit the weights, Mauch. You’re still getting pushed around. Getting married is going to make you fat and happy. Get and keep an edge. You have a lot to overcome. Don’t get complacent.

  9. Fred McNeil Says:

I’m going to look those guys up. Still, I’d be shocked if we went Oline that early.

  10. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

OT: Any thoughts on LB Ja’Whaun Bentley who NE is going to release today? In 2023, Bentley started 16 games for New England, recording 114 total tackles with five tackles for loss, a career-high 4.5 sacks, and three passes defensed.

Bucs need to learn how not to get off to a 3-1, 4-1 start then go in the tank for four games..

    I AGREE!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!

    that coincides with bakers TOs…

baker had 7 TOs in 5weeks…we were 1-4 in that stretch

    GO BUCS!!!!!

I attribute it more to the HC not keeping the press clippings from going to the team’s head, and not keeping them motivated.

That and Joe joining jinxing us.. ahem Denver.😉

It’s happened two years on a row.

  15. 813BUCBOI Says:

    jmark

    not arguing that…

we’ve seen too many times the team come out flat…

but they are pros on a team full of talented player and we have a solid foundation in terms of leadership…only a few have rings on this current team…not sure how much more motivation they need…as herm edwards said, you play to win the game lol…

    GO BUCS!!!!

  16. Brian in St Pete Says:

It’s awesome to have a team with such cool interesting dudes. I’m really loving this era of Bucs ball. It all starts with #6. Dudes are just fun to watch and follow.

  17. Beeej Says:

Did Baker’s increased turnovers not coincide with Mike and Chris being out?

  18. unbelievable Says:

That 1-4 stretch also coincided with losing Evans, Godwin, Winfield and Dean… but yeah blame it all on Baker 🙄

He did have 1 very bad game in that stretch, but otherwise those were all team losses

  19. Aqualung Says:

The defense was the primary culprit, any results oriented fan recognizes that. Thankfully Bowles and Licht have commented on it and have committed to a move to fix it.

  20. Vanessa Anne Says:

    Good for Cody!

He’s the quintessential “small town kid makes good” story.

We were all exasperated at the end of the playoff game last year. I know how I felt. I can only imagine what it was like for the team.

Best wishes to him and his fiance for a long and happy marriage!

  21. dmatt Says:

OL is the least of my worries. We lost multiple OT games due to the defense repeated failure to stop long drives n allowing multiple first downs in nail biter games. We’ve got to find ways to put pressure on the qb to stop long drives n get more sacks, and ints. Let’s stockpile the defense in the first 4 rounds n go offense in the last 2 rounds. We had a top 5 offense despite our elite wrs n playmaking tightend being out so why would we go OL or wr first round. Our entire OL returns. With Richaad White n Jamel Dean on the hot seat, we have room to possibly deal those two for more draft picks. Hassan Reddick alone can’t fix the defense. We need more reinforcement.l on the defense.

    “playing pickleball”

Wow I have an expat buddy here in Thailand who is running a league of mostly Expat older guys and gals. That said some of these folks can move quite well. One in his 70s!

Mauch playing at his size? Amazing! It can’t help but keep him agile and fit.

    Go Bucs
