How Much Did Josh Grizzard Influence Chris Godwin To Stay?

March 24th, 2025

Approved.

At the soon-to-be-sold (?) NFL.com, a noted columnist suggested that with Chris Godwin, it wasn’t just about the money.

Of course, Godwin, the Pro Bowl receiver with the Bucs allegedly passed up on a Brink’s truck to stay with the Bucs. Jeffri Chadiha explained why Godwin picked stability over finances.

Godwin chose to remain with a Tampa Bay team that has been rolling offensively — the last two coordinators, Dave Canales and Liam Coen, have landed head-coaching jobs over the last two years — and should continue to excel with most of its key players returning.

Joe has to think that new Bucs offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard won over Godwin, maybe not by words but by his actions last season as former Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen’s right-hand man. If Godwin wasn’t impressed or thought Grizzard was a bad choice, would Godwin have stayed? At an alleged discount?

Godwin sure seemed to suggest he felt good about Grizzard earlier this month.

“That familiarity with the people that you’re working with, it makes a huge difference,” Godwin said.

“I think [Grizzard’s offense is] going to be a big advantage for us – not just me but for us as an offense, so I’m excited about it.”

If Godwin didn’t care for Grizzard or he sensed the offense wouldn’t produce under Grizzard, it’s hard to reconcile that Godwin wouldn’t have left.

Actions speak louder than words and Godwin’s decision was as much a nod of approval for Grizzard as it was Godwin’s desire to stay in his second hometown.

I think you got an extra “did” in your title.

It was about Grizzard. And Mayfield. And Evans. And Irving / White / the offensive line.

Godwin knows they’re stacked with weapons.

  3. OR Buc Says:

You know Grizzard was the 3rd down guy and Godwin was a 3rd down machine. You might be onto something Joe.

  4. Aqualung Says:

If Jason can get the defense to perform even average despite the coaching deficiencies, this team can go far.

Helluva point! One could make an argument Godwin was on fire because of Grizzard. And maybe due to Grizzard, Godwin got paid.

    Good point.

I am waiting until Grizzard proves himself. Coen did not try to poach him (like he did several other coaches), so that makes me wonder if he wasn’t his “right-hand man.”

  7. Davyboy Says:

Grizzard is obviously very smart. Hopefully, he also possess “it”. To call plays well in the NFL under that kind of pressure a person has to possess “it” or he will fail miserably. Hopefully Grizzard has it. A lot is riding on him. We will all know in September.

Most definitely Grizz played a huge part along with Coach Bowles, Mike, Baker, and the rest of the team. Godwin knows it’s a great organization and that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.

  9. Hodad Says:

Several factors went into Godwin staying. If Gizz was one of them, that’s a good thing.

I remember Gizz saying how he was preparing to eventually become an NFL coordinator when he was in an upper booth in the Stadium thinking what play he would call on 3rd down to keep the Bucs moving the chains.
