Little To No Risk For Bucs Signing Haason Reddick

March 14th, 2025

Limited risk.

When Joe first saw the note from BSPN’s Adam Schefter that the Bucs and edge rusher Haason Reddick agreed to terms, Joe started thinking it was a weird Twilight Zone dinosaurs-in-Manhattan hallucination.

Then, Joe thought Schefter was being punked by a fake Schefter account. You know the type; they spring up like mushrooms every year during free agency.

When Joe finally realized it was real, Joe then pulled a Fred Sanford. Whenever he was shocked, he grabbed his heart thinking he was about to stroke out and reunite with his deceased wife, yelling, “ELIZABETH!”

(No, this is not to be confused with George “The Animal” Steele pointing under Rowdy Roddy Piper’s kilt yelling, “Elizabeth!”)

A dark stain on the Bucs franchise has finally been rectified. In fact, Joe just wants to celebrate this move by Bucs’ AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht.

Speaking on NFL Network earlier this week, reporter Sara Walsh noted there is virtually no risk in the Bucs signing Reddick to what amounts to a bit more of a prove-it contract.

“Baker Mayfield is an example on one of those [players the Bucs] had on [a prove-it contract], and then they had to pay Baker, but it was a prove-it deal, much like Hasson Reddick is going to be,” Walsh said. “So the risk-reward here isn’t huge here for the Buccaneers. It’s a one-year deal.

“They really need some help pressuring the quarterback. They need help [at] edge rushers, and they’re going to get that. And they are going to hope that this is Reddick who’s very motivated after what happened last year with the Jets. Wants to come out here prove to everyone he’s deserving of a big time contract. And perhaps Jason Licht has struck gold again when it comes to finding these guys that you can plug in, that can impact this team immediately.”

Joe really, really believes Reddick will make the Bucs’ pass rush all across the front line better. From YaYa Diaby to Calijah Kancey and Vita Vea.

There simply aren’t many teams that have enough bodies on an offensive line to handle those four guys in a pass rush, provided Riddick returns to his former beastly self. One of those four is going to be attacked with just a single blocker. Maybe at times, two of the Bucs’ four pass rushers will see a single blocker.

And when add Jihad to the mix, Winfield gets back to full health, we will get there with the down linemen, but the occasional Winfield, David or Smith blitz, should be fun

    BUCS/LICHT HISTORY
Hasson wants a shot at the bag (he dropped). He could have gone to +15 teams and got this contract, but he chose the Bucs.

Shaq led the league in sacks one year. He did it on a prove it contract. He proved it and got rewarded. That contract allows Licht to sell future agents on prove it deals. Not too many other teams have proof that they’ll stand behind 1 year deals.

    Licht is a great GM.

  3. Aqualung Says:

Licht is indeed a great GM, one of the best across the league.

Can’t wait to see Reddick dropping into pass coverage — No one will be expecting it.

  4. Upstate NY BUC Says:

Resign Shaq for 1year, good depth! He wants to play?

  5. BradimusPrime Says:

    Can CJ Mosley still run?
I haven’t watched much of him, but the name is intriguing.

  6. Alanbucsfan Says:

The contract Bucs and Reddick agreed to is No risk for the Bucs-
Let’s speculate that Reddick has a terrific start to the season – 5 sacks, 8 QB hits, etc in 1st 7 games …
Now the contract may become an issue to Reddick, he thinking that he’s worth $30 million+/year.
Do the Bucs tear up his deal and give him a new one?
Does Reddick hold out as he did with the Eagles and Jets?
Bucs Hoping he waits until the end of the year for a new contract? Not based on his past history.
    There is some risk.

“This is the big one! I’m coming Elizabeth!” Never gets old…
Even to this day, when I see Jameis walk across the field to the huddle, I can’t stop hearing in my headthe theme song to Sanford and Son…”Wha Wha Wawa…”

  8. Oxycondomns Says:

There was little to no risk signing randy gregory

It’s career suicide if Reddick goes gang busters in the first half of the season and then holds out mid-season. No team would give a two-time holdout on the wrong side of 30 a fat contract in 2026.

There is risk that Reddick doesn’t have it anymore and that 12 mil could have been spent elsewhere.

It will be interesting to see how the draft goes. Our OLB room is getting full:

    – Diaby
    – HR
    – Braswell
    – Nelson
    – Watts
    – Ramirez

  11. Dom Says:

Would still love to see a combination of Edge/LB/CB still in the first three rounds. Edge and CB should be the priority of round 1 though. Lots of great LB’s get taken after the first round. We already paid this price before with picking Devin White over Josh Hines-Allen. No need to repeat that mistake again

  12. larrd Says:

Draft a DL early and an ILB mid-rounds and I’d be pretty happy with the front seven! An early corner or two added to that makes me happy with the whole defense!

    100%

  14. Bucs Guy Says:

Watts and Ramirez > 0? I don’t know. They haven’t shown it. I still think the Bucs should trade back to around 25, and pick up an extra 3rd rd and 6th rd pick. Take Jihad Campbell.

Then package your 2nd and 3rd to trade up near the top of the 2nd to get another Edge rusher.

Titans don’t have a 3rd rd pick, so they may be anxious to get one. Browns and Giants each already have 2 x 3rd round picks. These teams need lots of players and may be happy to grab extra picks.

  15. Bojim Says:

Don’t think they go edge rusher in the first round anymore. Probably hoping Braswell opens up.

  16. Teacherman Says:

Imagine if we actually had a beast at DE instead of Logan Hall.

He is fast, but not great at stopping the run or sacking the QB.

Imagine if we had a DE that could actually get into the backfield.

    Imagine….

Yaya, Kancey, Vea, an upgrade to Hall, and Reddick.

    5 men. 5 linemen.

    Unstoppable.

We need to upgrade DE and replace Hall.

  17. Oxycondomns Says:

im afraid im going to get flagged by homeland security for all my jihaad searches

  18. Oxycondomns Says:

he looks like he will fit in perfectly with bowles and his blitzing schemes

  19. Marine Buc Says:

    I agree with the above.

It seems that IDL/ILB/CB are bigger needs than OLB. Our GM has done a solid job at improving the OLB position already.

Plus – I wouldn’t mind an upgrade at WR with Godwin returning from injury and Mike Evan’s age. We can hopefully find an upgrade over Palmer, Jarret and Johnson in round 4…

  20. gbobucsfan Says:

Mosley has been injure prone for a few years now and i believe is 34

  21. Mike Johnson Says:

a lot of you are fired up about Reddick. I am not. We will see. His numbers from last yr make me think he has very little left in his tank. So I am cautiously optimistic.

  22. drdneast Says:

Moving with lightning speed, a year later than he should have, Licht signed and outside edge rusher. I have blurred vision from the event it happened so fast.
It’s apparent you spend your misspent youth watching too much TV

  23. Rod Munch Says:

I had never seen that clip with Rowdy Roddy Piper and George the Animal Steele – that’s good stuff!

Rowdy is me on this message board talking to people, “you are very stupid, I am very handsome.” I sometimes wonder how much watching wrestling heels growing up rubbed off on me.

  24. Lt. Dan Says:

Ok Joe…you know. And I know. Most of your readers have no idea what Twilight Zone was and who Fred Sanford…now “how’d you like five across yo lips big dummy?”

  25. #99 the big fella Says:

    lol at Rod Munch
I think the same way. I watched so much of it as a youngster I became a smart ass..

  26. Todd Bowls Says:

Bucs need to get stout on defense. Is”The Son of George ‘The Animal’ Steele” available in the draft?

  27. EEK Says:

need some more depth — and 2-3 quality starters on D
this has been a high injury position

this D was just too up and down

  28. ballwasher61 Says:

Rod on the Rowdy =too damn funny

  29. stpetebucsfan Says:

Everybody is licking their chops at the thought of the Buc’s pass rush. But Todd is still Todd and there will be some blitzing!

The true wild card to the return of the Defense is the health of Antoine Winfield. IF he comes back at his former self the D will be awesome. Winfield gives the D the playmaker they did not have last season.

Winfield is the most impactful player at the most “impactful” position…wild card…he can also rush the QB or help out with the other teams #1 and AW has a “feel” for the game that is special.

  30. garro Says:

Joe sometimes I do get a kick out of your obsessive desires for pass rushers and running backs.

This dude has done nothing lately to make my eyebrows raise much less my heart rate but I so hold out the same hope that I did for JTS…

Well that’s not entirely true. My eyebrow did raise when he stayed at the house most of last season. Didn’t Diva threaten similar?

    Go Bucs!

  31. #1bucsfan Says:

Don’t forget Shaq sack king Barrett did the same thing. Our window for a run is closing with the elite talent we have on offense and the pieces we have on defense. I mean our OLine is young and impressive and we have a young back in Bucky but ME13 and CG14 are aging and won’t be elite to many more season baker isn’t a young spry chicken joe says he’s in his prime and while I do agree but with his style of play who knows how long till he get hurt bad. I love baker and I’m a huge fan of how he plays but man I’m concerned for his health. Let’s go get this ring

  32. Joe Says:

Ok Joe…you know. And I know. Most of your readers have no idea what Twilight Zone was and who Fred Sanford…now “how’d you like five across yo lips big dummy?”

That’s why Joe linked to Fred Sanford.
