Kyle Trask Sticking With Bucs

March 12th, 2025

Staying put.

He ain’t going anywhere.

Maybe Bucs backup quarterback Kyle Trask doesn’t like fighting with America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, for a gig, likely playing somewhere cold.

Or perhaps Trask has been burned too often by resort fees and, as a result, he’s turned off from playing for his former teammate Tom Brady in Las Vegas.

Whatever the reason, the former Gators star quarterback is staying in the free state of Florida. Per Jenna Laine of ESPN, Trask will continue to be Baker Mayfield’s safety net. It’s a one-year deal, Laine typed.

Various reports say Trask will earn $2.7 million.

Trask is a good guy and in the very few brief snaps he’s played, he didn’t embarrass himself.

If he’s going to be a backup, may as well do so in Florida where there’s no state income tax and he won’t freeze on the sidelines.

HE’S THE FUTURE AND THE BUCS KNOW IT.

  2. Bucs4Ever Says:

    weird…

  3. Todd Bowls Says:

If anything happens to Baker (which unfortunately could happen due to his running style), Kyle has a solid line, great receivers, and a strong running game.

Beats being behind a patchwork offensive line somewhere else and running for his life when the opposing pash rush breaks through.

  4. FortMyersDave Says:

Awesome for Kyle, not too many places where you can earn a few million for holding a clipboard. Now the question is whether he or Michael Pratt will be the 2nd string back up or the 3d string QB running the scout team?

  5. Winny Testaverde Says:

He may be trying to follow the same career path as Ryan Griffin. Get paid for several years of scout team…and hopefully much like Ryan, Kyle can help a tipsy Baker following a Super Bowl water parade/celebration.

  6. Lightningvinny Says:

He’s a guy that can go 2-2 if Bake is out for 4 games ,,, that’s all you can ask for

  7. Ha-Ha-Ha Says:

    Interesting.
I thought Coach Duuuvaaaal would have given him a shot.
Not to replace “The Prince” but to help install last years offense.
    A one year deal?
The League has a strange QB situation.
A lot of new players the last couple of years and some old guys getting ready to retire.
We could be seeing a reduction in the number of players in the next few years.
Maybe Trask gets a couple of starts next year and earns a starting contract.
If not, just sign another deal next year.

  8. Jeffs grandpa Says:

Remember he was sooooooooooooooooooo close at beating Baker out a few training camps ago

HE’S THE FUTURE AND THE BUCS KNOW IT.”

    Well…. the Gatorade doesn’t mix itself….

  10. ChiBuc Says:

Trask will probably be OC when Grizzard gets poached after next seaso

  11. Larrd Says:

He probably didn’t get the interest he hoped for. Try again next year!

  12. Dewey Selmon Says:

Heck yeah, we have franchise QB’s lol

  13. matthew a veal Says:

win win. all starting qbs miss games. trask will have a great situation when he plays.

likewise the bucs have a cheap, agreeable, conscientous backup who is close to competent. no training needed, no making friends on the fly, etc.

  14. Gipper Says:

Surprised he didn’t seek a starting opportunity elsewhere. There is a shortage of quality QB’s in the NFL. After 4 years seems like a good time to for him to stretch for a new opportunity. Happy he is staying. He has learned from two excellent QB’s with differing approaches at Tampa.

  15. Bushlover Says:

The gatorade doesn’t mix itself, lol ..nice.

  16. Mike S Says:

    Spytek didn’t want him.

Stay with the Bucs. It’s the devil you know.

  17. Colin in Canada Says:

Trask to the future has me laughing out loud. Pumped bud. Let go

  18. Rastaferian Jenkins Says:

Familiarity with the offense and the coaching staff all play a part in this. Welcome back Kyle. Good to see players wanting to be here and wanting to help this team no matter their role. Go Bucs!

  19. Simeon4HOF Says:

    Didn’t see this coming

  20. Simeon4HOF Says:

Ok future Trask, glad ur dreams are still alive lol

  21. Simeon4HOF Says:

He got the all caps and lead the thread. Lmao
    That’s a true #2 fan

  22. B Says:

All the pieces are falling into place. Lol. Seriously though, you ever notice how besides the fan club jokes neither Joe nor we the fans have decided or seriously discuss if he is actually a good quarterback or not? Just a thought. I certainly don’t know but I hope so because Baker’s not changing his playing style and that all but guarantees we will need him for 1-4 games a season.

  23. Joseph C Simmons Says:

Crazy how he’s gotten almost zero chances to prove himself. Tom Brady and Baker Mayfield have missed zero starts dating back to 2020. Nice streak we have going, but it sure must be a little frustrating for Trask.

  24. OR Buc Says:

It’s interesting to me that another team didn’t give him a real offer. A heisman runner up, backup to Tom Brady and Baker Mayfield. Trask would beat out Daniel Jones/AR15, Justin fields and potentially give Darnold a run for his money. Good for us!

  25. ModHairKen Says:

Why is he back? Look at his history. This is a committed, loyal man. I love this guy’s character.

  26. Kenton Smith Says:

Kyle got 2.7 million. Had to have the OK from Licht to Bowles to Grizzard and probably Mayfield too. Bet if he has to play he’ll do great. Our high character team will rally around him, he’s a well liked guy. Another great signing for us!

  27. ElioT Says:

Here come the Baker hating R-words.

  28. BucHead Says:

If Trask has a 15 year career as a backup, he will have earned at least $35M doing what he loves with a great team and with prudent investment his family will have a great life and generational wealth. Not too shabby for a lowly backup!

  29. BA’s Red Pen Says:

I’m really happy for the occult of Trask, those dummies are so cute!

  30. Trask To The Future Says:

Kyle Trask is a good dude. Great team player. You have heard him whining about not playing. Same thing happened to him in high school and again at UF. He rode the bench and was a team player and waited for his opportunity and then took full advantage of it.

Can’t hate on a guy that’s waiting patiently for his chance. He broke records at UF against many top SEC corners that play in the NFL today. He made Pitts and Toney into superstars at UF and now they’ve been mediocre in the NFL so far. Everyone thought his numbers were only great because of them.

Hopefully Kyle will eventually get his chance to play with NFL starters.

  31. Chip M Says:

There is a lot to be said for retaining developing players who are great teammates around a successful team. It is hard to do in this day and age. The O-line is back. Receivers are back. Running backs are deeper and back. QBs are back.

  32. Aqualung Says:

People are surprised he didn’t get offered a job to start?!?!

More posters here must ingest lead based paint thinner than we thought. The whole league knows what we or they have in Trask.

    And this is the result.

Licht is probably saying, “crap.” The best practice reels of Trask must suck just enough.

  33. 1sparkybuc Says:

Good for Trask, and good for the Bucs. I believe the season is not lost if Mayfield is injured, and I’m confident Trask will be ready and well prepared when needed. He can’t run like Mayfield, but he can see the field a little better. He’s great insurance imo.

  34. George R Says:

First drafted QB from the Bucs to get a second contract

  35. Oxycondomns Says:

the punter makes more than our human victory cigar

  36. ThatAintRight! Says:

Why? Weird move. I guess the plus is we don’t need a QB from the draft now. This guys already pretty well associated to the Florida networking group.

If baker needs time for rest or whatever things probably the best year to get that time off. Could actually see a few games awarded to Kyle this season. Schedule doesn’t look to wild to me.

  37. Zoocomics Says:

I think if Kyle ever gets the chance…which is coming btw… he’ll surprise us, in a good way. A handful of you have already noted, this team is stacked with talent, it would be hard for any QB currently in the league to look bad in this offense.

  38. Beeej Says:

The guy simply doesn’t have any tape, outside of a few preseason games. Needs to get some playing time in before anyone will show interest. At least being #2 he gets some reps

  39. Zoocomics Says:

@Trask To The Future…you wouldn’t hear Kyle complain because he’s not a Type A personality. It’s why the QB competition was never really a thing. Unless Kyle would have showed an attribute to blow coaches away, Baker was always going to be ahead, he is a leader and it’s what’s needed at QB at this level. imo, Mariota falls in a similar category.

Trask will stumble into his opportunity to play, and that’s when we will see what the kid’s got.

  40. go dawgs Says:

This surely gets the Trassholes juices flowing

  41. Defense Rules Says:

Very surprised; I was convinced that Kyle was a goner. However, glad he’s staying. He knows this offense as well as any backup QB is gonna know it, and with our rushing game & passing weapons, there’s no reason we couldn’t still win against at least half the teams out there. One less problem to worry about. Now fix the defense.

  42. garro Says:

I question the one year deal. Someone can elighten me as to why you would sign your backup to a one year deal. If you have to play him (god forbid) and he balls out you are gonna wish you had him on a longer deal or at least one with some options.

Scratching my head again on the whole Trask thing. 13 pass attempts is total BS by the way. Get this dude some game reps! Geez!

    Go Bucs!

  43. BPBucsfan Says:

Where else can a person with a mediocre skill set earn 2.7 million dollars for holding a clipboard 📋? Great gig if you can get it. Good for him.

  44. StickinUp4Centers Says:

I wonder what the longest tenure with the fewest snaps with one team is. Long snappers get more action than Trask.

  45. Irishmist Says:

Simmons makes an interesting point that neither Brady nor Mayfield have missed a game while he’s been the backup. He’s like an antiFitz, a good luck charm at backup QB. Good a reason as any to keep him.

  46. Bucsarg Says:

Kyle is ranked around the 14th best backup. All the guys ahead of him have lots more game experience. I think he is as good or better than several of the guys ahead of him. 2.7 million seems cheap. I think the Bucs made another good deal. I also think Kyle is a good fit in this organization. There are many junk organization out there. Baker played for two of them. Junk organizations ruin good players. I’m glad Kyle is staying for another year.

  47. RustyRhinos Says:

Trask is now the First Buccaneer drafted QB. In how long, to get a second contract in Tampa Bay?? It was not “Americas QB” was it? Not Glennon, was it?

Where are all those never Trask fans, saying how fast we would dump Trask???

Continuity is a very important “nuity”. Welcome back, Trask. Stay focused and ready.

    Another low-key signing by Licht.

    GO!!!!!BUCS!!!!!

  48. RustyRhinos Says:

go dawgs: Yes, Sir!! GO DAWGS!!!!! ROFLMAO ‘Trassholes”

  49. Bucsarg Says:

Bucs get one of the better back ups for cheap and Trask stays with one of the best organizations. I like it.

  50. Allbuccedup Says:

Probably his only option. Hopefully he will get 90% of spring training snaps.

  51. Boomer Says:

Back up qb isn’t a bad gig if you love football and it’s vastly underrated.

Warren Moon’s backup for 7 seasons, Carlson started played in at least 1 game over the 4 year period that Houston made the playoffs (1987-93).

Todd Collins played 16 NFL seasons, beginning as Jim Kelly’s heir apparent but settling in as a backup for most of his career.

Chase Daniel banked more than $41 million and did so without ever being signed to start for a team.

Brady Quinn became Cam Newton’s backup for seven seasons. His 2-0 starter record in 2014 was crucial in a 7-8-1 Panthers team’s playoff journey.

Jim Kelly’s backup for 8 yrs was , Reich played 14 years and is responsible for one of the NFL’s signature performances – a playoff-record 32-point comeback in the Bills’ wild-card rematch featured 289 yards and four touchdown passes. A week later, Reich guided the Super Bowl-bound Bills to a 24-3 win over the No. 1-seeded Steelers.

Wade Wilson played 19 NFL seasons. The Vikings draftee spent much of his 20s backing up Tommy Kramer

A third-round Cardinals pick in 2002, Josh McCown played for nine teams over 19 years.

Don Strock spent a staggering 15 seasons as the Dolphins’ backup, starting 22 games and leading eight game-winning drives

  52. Bosch Says:

So the Bucs retained their Victory Formation Specialist. Whopeeee!

  53. orlbucfan Says:

Trask is a team player. He is a quiet part of the Bucs tightly knit locker room. He is respected by his fellow teammates. He knows the offense and is available if Baker goes wilder than usual, and gets hurt (cos we know he’s fearless feisty). He may not make spectacular $millions$, but he and his family are set. He may have signed a one year contract cos if a team makes an offer, he has the freedom of choice to leave or stay. It shows respect from the front office when you think about it.

  54. Marky mark Says:

Trask has no value outside Gator country. He would have to do UFL and put 😅 up big numbers.

  55. BucsFanSince1996 Says:

With this offense we have now, Trask would be fine as a starter and will show that if he ever gets a chance. In the meantime, it’s much safer sitting on the bench than getting hit by 300 lb guys. 😉

These days with QBs playing until they’re 35 or 40 years old Kyle still has plenty of time in the NFL if he wishes to keep playing.

If he does get to play for a game or two this year where his film looks good it will help him tremendously in contract negotiations next year. It will help him playing behind a great o-line, throwing to Evans, Godwin, & JMac, and having three good RBs!

  56. gbobucsfan Says:

As someone else said – first QB drafted by TB to receive a 2nd contract!! hahaha

  57. Oxycondomns Says:

the punter is a better qb than trask

  58. View from 132 Says:

$2,700,000 to not play football is the greatest job of all time.

  59. BucaneroJim Says:

“He’s a guy that can go 2-2 if Bake is out for 4 games ,,, that’s all you can ask for”

    Like Baker in 2023… 9/8.

  60. HC Grover Says:

Good! We lost Plan 9 but get to keep Trask.

  61. Oneilbuc Says:

Oxycon. That’s not what happened in training camp 2023 we all saw who was better and that’s a fact. Baker Mayfield had to be gifted the staring job and he’s choked 2 years in a row in the playoffs.

  62. Trask To The Future Says:

    Zoocomics,

Do you honestly think Trask had a fair chance to be the starter when Mayfield was brought in? Baker was made the starter the second he signed with the Bucs.

Baker wasn’t going to sign a prove it deal with the Bucs and unless the Bucs made assurances to him and his agent that he’d start. They took him off the market and took away his other opportunities to play for another team. I’m sure part of him signing with us was because he was promised to start. He wouldn’t risk his career on even a possibility of losing the job in camp against someone else.

It makes no logical sense to assume there was ever an actual Camp Battle for the starting job with Trask vs. Baker. NONE.

A former #1 overall pick that just had some promising play for the Rams list signing a prove-it deal without assurances he’ll get to… prove it. That only comes by being the starter.

  63. Wild Bill Says:

Truth is Baker takes lots of physical risks. Very gutsy guy. High probability of missing some games. Trask knows the system and did well in pre season. Smart move by both him and the Bucks. Decent salary and probably competent enough to fill in when needed. They need not give him a lot of reps in preseason.

  64. Mike Says:

If trask gets the opportunity to play and he will because bakers time is coming when he will get hurt and history will repeat it’s self and trask will ball out, all of you who are making a joke about the young man’s abilities, by the way he is worth more in 4 years than any of you will be worth in your life time, when that happens stay off the band wagon he doesn’t need you to ride along

  65. Jeffrey David Stenger Says:

He wasn’t soooooo close to beating Baker out, he flat out did! The camp and pre-season stats show that. In addition, In Pre-Season that year Trask threw almost 60 balls, Mayfield had like 15-20. Thats not a competition, that’s a (Baker was given the starting nod at signing!!) Bowles had to go out and make up a lie about a competition that never existed!!! I would bet my life on that! To Boot, Bowles ended the so called competition one game early because Trask was looking so good. Too many fans are childish about college connections to pro players, they dislike the Gators, and let that college time affect their thought process. The man was ready in year 3 as per Arians plan when they drafted him. In the end Baker came through, and hopefully finishes out his career here!

  66. Jeffrey David Stenger Says:

No real offense meant, but some of you Gator Haters are ignorant as all get out!! Some of the comments border on just plain stupidity!! Punter is a better QB, some people are just childish with no grasp of the truth!! You should actually keep up with Camp, and the pre-season, then you wouldn’t say such mush!!

  67. Joe Says:

He wasn’t soooooo close to beating Baker out, he flat out did!

That is flat out inaccurate. Joe was at every practice. Did Trask have some better practices? Yes. It was close. Despite the spin the Bucs had, it was Mayfield’s job to lose.

  68. kaimaru Says:

    @Trask To The Future

Yeah, because no player has ever bet on themselves with 1 year prove it deals smdh
