Chris Godwin Would Not Go Into Details About His Rehab

March 11th, 2025

No timetable on return.

Nearly five months after suffering a dislocated ankle in garbage moments against the Crows, how close is Bucs receiver Chris Godwin to getting on a practice field? Or even playing in a game? Godwin is keeping that intel close to the vest.

In fact, twice today speaking with the local pen and mic club, given the opportunity to explain how his rehab is going, Godwin only offered a couple of cliches, saying he didn’t want to get into the specifics.

Is he even running on his surgically-repaired foot? Godwin wouldn’t say.

The only light Godwin shined is that there are “peaks and valleys” in the process, just like he had when he came back from knee surgery two years ago.

Does Godwin have a target date in mind in order to get on the practice field or perhaps play in a Week 1 game? Godwin said he hasn’t set a date because, he said, he is just focused on the “end” of the rehab, and not some empty target date that may or may not be met.

“I feel good with where I’m at,” Godwin would only say about his rehab.

One reason Godwin said that he doesn’t have a target date is he didn’t want to become too aggressive in trying to meet that date only to have a setback by rushing.

Joe is just going to guess if the Bucs, with all their medical information, didn’t think Godwin could return, the Bucs wouldn’t have signed him to a three-year pact for some $66 million with $44 million of Team Glazer loot guaranteed.

t kras tried to gently get some info in his interview and godwin wasnt having it either

I would hope the Bucs target him less over the middle and send him more towards the sidelines and deeper patterns so he’s not dealing with as many bodies around the ball. Baker has the tendency to push the ball into tight windows often leading to his receivers into big hits. Chris is tough but when he is exposed and they go you his legs these injuries are tough to avoid. Let his larger tight ends do that dirty work and preserve him for the playoffs.

Slow and steady wins this race.

I’m perfectly fine if Chris never actually steps onto a field until say, oh… July. I could even go August.

That wouldn’t give him a lot of time to prep for the season, but we don’t need him for the summer. We need him from October and beyond.

That injury taking some time to heal, we saw it live. Dude hurt Chris

But he’s content on schedule and he’ll be back to form before we know it.
By training camp he’ll be alot closer

  5. Crickett Baker Says:

I was a bit surprised by how he fielded those questions. We’ve heard other players give percentages of how they are going to play. Looks like we are just going to have to wait–with bated breath.

  6. Jmarkbuc Says:

Better to under promise and over deliver.

  7. Jeff Says:

We’ll see him in November for 2 games. Then IR for the remainder of the season.

  8. Jake been there since the beginning Says:

Hey they may have asked him to put it out there like that for right now. The business side and number one thing is protecting himself and the team.. Maybe

  9. ballwasher61 Says:

He won’t play and shouldn’t until the regular season. No need. Plenty of time in camp to work on timing when it’s right. August is 5 months away so he should be good to go

Agree, Joe. Thinking the same that the Bucs wouldn’t pursue if they didn’t think he was ready. And we have heard that other teams were interested. So they did their homework too. Chris will be good to go by the time the season begins. Can’t wait! After the draft, it’s full steam ahead.

Chris did not give any answers that would assuage concerns about his recovery or ability to return , and I am sure that was planned that way , so be it , I am sure Chris and the Bucs have their reasons, but I was glad to see they gave Chris a new contract with 44 million dollars of guaranteed money, no matter what , if the worst were to happen , that is a very generous and well deserved golden parachute.
