Jason Licht Just Got Smarter Without Lifting A Finger

March 10th, 2025

Playing chess.

Buried in the confetti Bucs fans are throwing while trying to process the giddy hysteria from the Bucs retaining Ben Bredeson and Chris Godwin, and agreeing to terms with Hasson Reddick in the opening minutes of legal tampering, is a transaction that has significance.

In the past few days on social media, former Bucs cornerback Carlton Davis vowed never again to make what he deemed a “mistake” by not testing the free agent waters and instead, re-signing with the Bucs.

Davis said he may have cheated himself out of money by not looking at other offers.

The Bucs last winter shipped Davis and two sixth-round draft picks to Detroit for a third-round pick. Had Davis not been traded, he would have gone to free agency as he did this week. And this afternoon, Davis and the Patriots came to an agreement.

Had the Bucs not traded Davis, they would have gotten bupkis for him after Davis agreed to play forh New England. Nothing.

By trading Davis and two sixth-round picks for a third-round pick to Detroit, the Bucs used that to draft Jalen McMillen.

The way McMillen played in the final games of last season it sure looks like the Bucs got an upgrade for Davis.

Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht ended up smelling like a rose. Again.

Your overall point is correct, but I’m pretty sure we get compensatory picks in this situation.

    Jason is the man

3 years 60 mil smh. You never go full retard.

  5. Paratrooper Buc Says:

    @Pewter941

You Nailed it. I was laughing so hard when I read Davis is getting that much.

  6. ballwasher61 Says:

Yeah it’s time after all the re-signings and intelligent moves this man has made that he gets his due as one of the best GM’s in not just football but pro sports. It’s a testament to how people grow and learn, surround themselves with good people and reward people that produce. Not just players but the staff as well. It is kind of a throw back philosophy that “if you do your job you will get recognized and rewarded” which is all anyone can ask. Not to mention how everyone talks about the forthrightness and honesty of this organization to it’s people. This has been transformed into one of the best operations in football, it does irk me that all the talking heads produce man chowder over Roseman and others and slight what happens here but the revenge is multiple championships.

    Now go get em…

  8. Oxycondomns Says:

out of curiosity what will be available at position of need for bucs 1 rd pick linebacker or cb at 19? seems like bucs would get a top guy at one of those positions?

  9. BuckyBuc Says:

    sign a vet corner

  10. Drunk Bucs Fan Says:

I thought I was hearing things when his deal details were announced.

I mean, good for him. Seems like a really good guy. But…..wow

  11. Usfbucs Says:

Interested to see if we make any additional big moves and what our cap situation looks like.

  12. Bucs Guy Says:

And if the Bucs didn’t draft McMillen, would they have gone WR in the 4th rd instead of RB Bucky Irving? Fortunately, we’ll never have to worry about that.

  13. SenileSenior Says:

Players of high character who love football and have the required talent mean excellence. The stuff of champions. We have a class organization. We can compete.

    Go Bucs!!

  14. Colin in Canada Says:

Davis and SMB both got big deals. I know guys want Dean out of town but he is not over priced and he’s a decent starter. Whoever said we would have got a comp pick for Davis is not entirely correct. Comp picks depend on a plus minus of players added to gained.

  15. fire bowles Says:

    sign Charvarius Ward

  16. Bushlover Says:

    Yup

  17. Bucs Guy Says:

I would love to see JL get Ward and/or Greenlaw as FAs from the 49ers. Then go draft an Edge, ILB and CB i rds 1-3 of the draft to build depth and towards the future.

  18. Oxycondomns Says:

i agree about if bucs can keep dean and draft a cornerback would be sweet

That was me, and yes, that’s a valid point.

  20. Beeej Says:

Dean and Davis are both man corners, and we’ve done mostly zone for the last 3 years. Makes absolutely no sense to have those guys paying them all that money

  21. Cbell96825 Says:

Perine for over 7 per don’t like that move but will see

  22. Oxycondomns Says:

think perine was a fake tweet

  23. SlyPirate Says:

Still need an ILB and CB. I’m expecting at least one more signing this week, maybe two.

  24. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Just as I always said about Davis. He’s only good enough to be a starter on a bad team. Not championship quality.

“Had the Bucs not traded Davis”

They would have had Davis for the entire year, and the defense would have been better.

The Bucs literally won a SB with him as the #1 corner.

    WOW, swing and miss.

  27. Beeej Says:

They would have been better but for the five games that he missed, which is his average

  28. RASH Says:

Buc since88. Bowles wiĺ never winplays not to lose⅘

  29. David Says:

Definitely looked like a good move.
Dean is hurt too often, but if they can re-sign him for half the price, I’d keep him for the depth

Tells you what you need to know about Davis though… Leaving a Super Bowl contender for the money. I’m not in his shoes but I think I would take 15 mil per year on a Super Bowl contending team over 20 million per year on a team that will not make the playoffs

  30. Mike Johnson Says:

Not so fast on Reddick. His performance last season was abysmal. Makes one wonder what he has left in the tank. I am only cautiously optimistic on him. Its a gamble. But Licht made it clear he was not going all in on spending lots of money for a DE. If I were the Bucs, I’d still draft a DE at 19 just for insurance.

LOL! The Lions lost yet again in the playoffs.

Detroit isn’t ever going to win anything, and they’re not a SB contender, unless you think winning the regular season means anything.

  32. Brandon Says:

I liked Davis. Like Dean, he had difficulty remaining healthy. He wasn’t as talented as Dean but more consistent… that being said, his dad is an A-hole. He would get on Buc Facebook groups and act like an entitled moron… its hard to like a player when it gives an idiot relative a reason to gloat and behave poorly.

  33. Escobar Says:

Lmao @Brandon – dude is funny for sure!
