Jameis Winston Says He’s Not Trying To Be Like Baker Mayfield

February 22nd, 2025

So Baker Mayfield led the NFL in interceptions last season, tied with Kirk Cousins at 16 picks.

That made it a little funny this week when Bussin’ With The Boys co-host Taylor Lewan asked Jameis Winston, America’s turnover machine and former Bucs franchise quarterback, if he wants to be like Mayfield, a guy who resurrected his career in Tampa after losing his starting jobs in Cleveland and Carolina.

Jameis punted on talking about Mayfield or saying he’d like to be in Mayfield-style shoes.

“Honestly, the quarterbacks I’ve been watching this offseason have been Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson — because I think they do a good job of limiting their own critical errors …” Jameis said. “Sometimes they have games where you’re just like, ‘Man, they had 18 consecutive checkdowns.’ And I think that’s the part of my game I have to really master. I know I can win a shootout. I know I can go out there and surgically dissect any defense that comes my way. But now the key to my game, to me actually elongating my career, is winning football games and protecting to the best ability I can.”

Man, Joe gets great laughs from Jameis. The poor guy has been trying to cut his interceptions and play a more composed game for so many years — and he loves talking about how he’s attempting to do it.

Last season, Jameis made 7 starts for the Browns and had 13 TDs and 12 interceptions. Classic.

Frankly, Joe thinks Jameis should want to be more like Mayfield, who has managed to find a stellar balance between gunslinger, scrambler and poised thrower to guys out of the backfield.

Mayfield completing 71.4 percent of his passes last season was a total eye-opener worthy of applause.

Oh, FFS. Just go away already, you clown.

Your old and tired act is old and tired.

  2. Pewter Power Says:

This damn photo of Winston needs to go away, looks like he ate rotten crab legs

  3. BA’s Red Pen Says:

The more Jameis the better! The dude is TV gold, you never know what kind of insane nonsense he’ll say next. I can’t wait for his next interview!!!

  4. MadMax Says:

Lets sign him to play for the aints….thats a guaranteed 2 wins next season, but they have to play him.

  5. Truth be Told Says:

He is a Fool that never grew up as a Passer. Always trying to force the ball. Baker is 10x the QB he ever was. Go Bucs!!

  6. Ant Says:

watch your mouth JP real bucs fans f with jameis.

  7. Dewey Selmon Says:

There are many ex-Bucs that fans root for Jameis included. I can deal with 16 ints a year, 1 per game. 1st half and 3 rd quarter you can recover from. Baker really hasn’t had any game losing ints. And certainly has less pick 6’s than Jaboo.

  8. Mort Says:

I got lots of time for Jameis. Dude has such a fun aura and I just love it. He’s said the same thing every year, but if it ever does click, he’s easily a top 19 QB in the league. He can throw it a mile and drop it in the bucket – but he will never see that linebacker drop deep and under cut a route. I wish he figured it out with Tampa, but I love watching the dude no matter where he goes. Genuinely brightens my day when I catch some interview or whatever with him.

  9. Mort Says:

    Obviously meant top 10. Lol.

  10. Bojim Says:

Love Jameis. He’s found his niche. Sorry it’s not football but RUN WITH IT!!!! Football loves you. You did a super job in NO. Go go go!!

  11. Bojim Says:

Well it is football but not a QB. Although I’d love to see him play. Entertaintment??? Yea.

  12. Irishmist Says:

What makes Jameis fun to listen to is that he has no filter, he doesn’t think before he shoots off his mouth. He plays quarterback the same way, and I’m not sure he can change it. The impulse control is just weak with this one.

  13. Ben the GA Buc Says:

Future sideline reporter incoming. THAT is his niche.

  14. Kenton Smith Says:

I don’t know what we’re doing with Trask but if we lose him we could certainly do worse at backup QB than JW. Guy has talent and pizzazz. He can win football games. Who’s perfect? And if he had to play he’d be playing with the best offense he’s ever played with.

  15. Capt Kidd Says:

Remember when Desean Jackson got miffed and wanted to leave because Jameis couldn’t hit him on a deep route? James was great on 15-20 yard bullets but couldn’t throw a deep timing pass or screen to save his ass. He’s never had touch or timing, it was just see and throw

  16. Tony Says:

I think the problem with Jameis was he came out too early. He should’ve stayed at FSU for another year & matured some more.

  17. Jmarkbuc Says:

    “I can dissect a defense”

    😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

  18. MadMax Says:

Yep Kenton, im with it….we’re gonna need one so why not

  19. Tbbucs3 Says:

Find it interesting that Tampa is the only place Jamies really never expressed is personality…..

Why is that? Probably due to the Trask loving Gator portion of the fan base hating on the man 24/7…good for Jameis to get away from this toxic fan base, looks like he’s been enjoying himself ever since he left.

  20. Tbbucs3 Says:

Technically agree with Madmax and Kenton….Jameis is X10 the quarterback that Trask is so it makes sense from a football standpoint….but due to the amount of hate Jameis received here, I dont even think he’d want to return.

  21. Winny Testaverde Says:

Of course he won’t say he wants to be like someone who is currently the Bucs QB. He starting earmarking the $100 million dollar contract he thought he would get after the 2019 season. Thankfully he was who we thought he was ( Denny Green: RIP ) and finished off the season in his own unique style.

His Super Bowl media dog & pony show was amusing I suppose…laughing at him more than with him however.

  22. TheBigSombreo Says:

Baker took the Bucs to 2 division titles and playoff visists.

Hiw many did Winston get for Tampa?

  23. Jerseybuc Says:

Talented guy but he has never adapted his approach. Same guy he
Was at FSU. Old dog, no née tricks.

  24. Iowabuc Says:

Baker has the dog in him that Wilson will just never have

  25. garro Says:

    The guy is clueless…

Jaymiss….Buddy, they think of you as a clown! They are laughing at you, not with you dude!

    Go Bucs!

  26. Todd Bowls Says:

Enjoy a plate of some Jameis crab legs and a bottle of Big Stork beer. Bawhawhaw!

  27. Drunkinybor Says:

Crab leg magoo needs to focus on his weird leadership and intense desire to violate peoples personal space.

  28. heyjude Says:

Jameis has matured a lot since the Bucs. Fun to listen to.

Agree with Kenton, MadMax, and Tbbucs3. If Trask leaves, Jameis could be a good backup for Baker. Unsure if Jason would revisit it though.

  29. 1sparkybuc Says:

I believe we have an offensive team that can make any QB look good, even Trask, and yes, even Jameis. The way Mayfield plays is really scary at times. He’s tough as nails, but can he play like that his whole career without a serious injury? I believe the offense we had last season is good enough to carry any backup QB. Trask has never gotten the opportunity to play with the starters in a real game, so there’s no actual evidence to gauge him by. Jameis never had an OL, the backs, or receivers that Mayfield had last season. I would prefer that Trask stay as a backup because he knows the system and the players. If he leaves, Jameis should be considered as an option. He would win games with this offense, and would accept a backup role. Apparently he still has a great work ethic, and dedication to the game. He loves it. He’ll play for crab legs.

  30. Hodad Says:

The real story here is Baker tied for lead in interceptions last season. He needs to at least cut down on the picks where you’re asking yourself why the hell did he throw that? Those balls that had no chance being completed. Have to remember it was his first year fully in that offense. Hopefully this season he cuts those picks in half knowing the offense better.

  31. Jeffs grandpa Says:

Great picture of that @ss clown

  32. Kgh4life Says:

Russell Wilson is a check down machine.

  33. Allbuccedup Says:

Jamies in Jacksonville they need a backup to overpaid Lawrence.

  34. BucsBeBack (Artist formally known as: BringBucsBack) Says:

“ I know I can go out there and surgically dissect any defense that comes my way.” -ATM

You can’t make this stuff up! Bless his giving (int) heart. “Check yo’ sheets!”, Jameis.

Baker must be better. Most of his picks last year were Jameis-esque, thrown under duress, when they shouldn’t have been thrown, into double & triple coverage; EASY picks for the defense. Bake has been baked in crunch time too often. This must stop!

  35. Mike Johnson Says:

Leave my man Jameis alone. He is a career Backup QB. Nothing wrong with that.
