Can A CFL Punter Handle NFL Duties?

February 12th, 2025

CFL record holder.

Yesterday, Joe wrote about the Bucs’ punting situation. Yes, it’s February.

Joe wondered how seriously the Bucs were taking the punting position. Since the Bucs released former fourth-round draft pick Jake Camarda, the punting of the Bucs has been frightening.

The punting almost reminded Joe of Bucs’ kickers in the last decade, when it seemed the Bucs signed a new kicker every three or four weeks because they couldn’t find one that knew how to kick (reliably).

Could a CFL record-holder be the answer? The Bucs signed Jake Julien to a futures contract in January. Punting for the Edmonton Elks — ELKS??? What the hell happened to the Eskimos??? — Julien averaged 54 yards a punt.

Generally, guys signed to a futures contract are camp meat for the next training camp.

So we will see if the Bucs got a steal from a CFL record holder.

The Elks. Made me chuckle a little. Eskimo is an offensive term? Eskimo??? Oy!

  2. Oxycondomns Says:

    its not rocket science

  3. Aqualung Says:

Is there something different about the physics of punting a ball in Canada vs the US? Is the ball super inflated? Because that’s one thing that otherwise shouldn’t be any different.

  4. Leopold Stotch Says:

What happened to the Eskimos? The woke liberals happened. Kinda like redskins

  5. stpetebucsfan Says:

Yes Leopold it’s awful that people woke up to the fact that a derogatory name slandering an entire group of people whose land we had already taken is just awful!!!

Oh the horrors of “woke” people!!! Let’s all just sleep walk through life eh?

Meanwhile reality check!!! The Commanders may have selected a stupid nickname to replace the one that slurred another group (the heck with them right Leopold) but what really slapped me in the face was the PRICE OF EGGS.

Must have been those “woke” liberals who released the bird flu upon all of us!!!

  6. garro Says:

He should already have a bag of balls and be woking on the NFL game.

I remember watching Buddy Carter with a bag of balls at Plant High school working on his punting after it became apparent he was not gonna be an NFL QB.

He was the Spartans (10-2) QB who beat Kent State in the Tangerine Bowl. He was a pretty good punter as well.

    Go Bucs!

  7. Joe in Michigan Says:

Will the Somali pirates make the Buccaneers change their name? Something to keep an eye on.

  8. Zoocomics Says:

I realize Tampa asks a bit more from their punters, they do kickoffs, which seems to be the trend these days with most punters… which with the new rule has added a wrinkle, and they are also place holders for extra pts and field goals… Bucs trying to have their cake and eat it too.

That beings said, I thought these guys were a dime a dozen… Unlike field goal kickers, college has yet to move the extra pt back, so you can see a little of the disadvantage kickers are having coming out of college, but punting? I get the better kickers in this league can flip the field, but I was really surprised how hard it was to simply to find a decent punter, at least one we didn’t notice. Pinion was pretty solid for us, We moved on from him because I’m sure he wanted a little more coin from us, and he’s been with ATL ever since. Still doing well in the NFL.

  9. Ron Mexico Says:

    “its not rocket science”

Actually I hope he does know how to fire some rockets (and let them land around the 10 yards line).

  10. Jeffs grandpa Says:

They’ll always be the Eskimos to me

  11. BuckyBuc Says:

Kid looks good on youtube, better than what we got now.

  12. KABucs Says:

Eskimo is not derogatory… It was just a term used for all of the indigenous people that lived in the far north/polar regions. In other words, Inuit, Iñupiat, Yupik, etc would all be considered Eskimos.

    Origin:
Algonquin: Ayas̆kimew – “A person who laces a snow shoe”.
French: borrowed from Algonquin and made into a french word, Esquimaux.
English: simplified from either French or Algonquin, Eskimo

The agenda to stop using the Eskimo name (ie. Eskimo Pies is changing it’s name… really) was probably started by some woke Caucasians… like usual. Drives me crazy.

    Libs are the worst.

  14. Stanglassman Says:

In 1977 the Inuit and Yapik rejected the use of the term Eskimo. It was a blanket name given to the indigenous people in the north and they wanted to be referred to by their tribal name. I guess the woke part is respecting their wishes. I never understood ‘woke’ when people use it as a slur. Is being considerate of others really that difficult?

  15. JustVisiting Says:

    find a kid

  16. JustVisiting Says:

If you can find a kid in Pop Warner who can average 54 yard with a regulation ball, I’d write him a check.

Woke is kissing the behinds of everyone you meet so you make sure you kiss the right ones. If that’s you, go for it.

  18. LouisFriend Says:

In the US, Cherokee people didn’t want to be called ‘Indians’ back in the day. They made it known and the word is gradually disappearing.

Would white Americans enjoy being called ‘the Spanish people’ regadless of their origin? Doubt it. The Eskimo name for those folks is no different than that.

  19. RustyRhinos Says:

Maybe because there are more ELKS than Eskimo’s there? 26,000 ELKS in Alberta who are free range. In 2021 there were 3,000 Inuit (Eskimos) people in Alberta, roughly 1% of Alberta’s population of 4,800,000.

I bet most Albertans see more elk than Inuitans (Eskimos) on any given day.

I hope Jake Julian can punt well for us in Tampa Bay, We know he won’t have any issues with punting in cold weather.

    GO!!!!!BUCS!!!!!

  20. BucsfaninOregon Says:

Well, it looks like politics is creeping back into Joe’s blog. OK by me. Wait until car prices shoot up. You can forget about price of eggs. Of course, blame it on Biden and Obama and Hillary.

I would think in Canada the ball would be harder because it is colder

  23. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Frankly, I liked the punter we started the year with.

  24. lambchop Says:

Punting is punting. There’s nothing the NFL will introduce that this kid can’t handle. Whether he lives up to his own hype is what we’ll have to see. The Bucs should just keep quiet about expectations and let him do his thing.

His family and other members of the Blackfoot want the Redskins to return his likeness at the minimum as they were HONORED to be celebrated by the franchise.
