Josh Grizzard Cherishes Baker Mayfield’s Endorsement

February 10th, 2025

Props from his new OC.

Strong words on the Bucs’ starting quarterback from his new offensive coordinator.

Josh Grizzard last week spoke glowingly of Baker Mayfield and was touched by the support Mayfield showed him and how Mayfield reached out after he learned of Grizzard’s promotion.

And to hear Grizzard talk about Mayfield, it sounds like Grizzard wants to make Mayfield sort of a player-coach to help guide younger players.

“It means the world to me,” Grizzard said of Mayfield’s support. “Without knowing him going into this time last year when I was brought on [and now] he was one of the first people to FaceTime me when I got the job.

“I know I have the support of him. I was in every meeting with him last year, whether it was gameplan meetings, on the field, going through individual [work] with Thad [Lewis], Liam [Coen] and Jordan [Somerville]. So, to take our relationship to the next level and be able to lean on him and him take that next step as a leader [is huge after] being in the league this long.

“Now he can shoulder more of the burden to elevate the younger guys and coach the younger guys. That way he is another extension of the coaching staff on the field. He has been fantastic. You know he is a competitor and we’re looking forward to it.”

Joe thinks Mayfield certainly has some coach qualities. With all the offensive coordinators Mayfield has had in his day, from Kliff Kingsbury and Lincoln Riley down to Dave Canales, Liam Coen and perhaps Grizzard, you have to figure some wisdom from those offensive wizards has rubbed off.

For a young guy, who better to get advice from than a quarterback who has been through and survived such an NFL roller coaster as Mayfield has? He’s navigated highs and lows and come out better for it. From No. 1 overall pick to the NFL trash heap to back-to-back Pro Bowls and division titles.

With all of the talk about redemption for Hurts last night, just imagine if Baker has another year like these last two and the Bucs go deep in the playoffs. With his charisma, the world will be his oyster again.
Make it so, Mr. Grizzard. (Miss ole Lewis G, he was a classic columnist).

Yes Griz, we know he’s a competitor but that isn’t always enough. A great competitor got his ass handed to him last night. The winning coach couldn’t stop talking about how much of a team game football is. Still is. The NFL today is super fast and super violent. Only a limited number of humans can process information and act(or react) in such situations. And that’s why they pay the best 50 million dollars a year. It’ll always be a game where it requires a full team winning individual games. Blocking, tackling, hanging onto the ball, and being the most physical. But you don’t have a chance without a QB who can process all this information and execute. So far then, we’ve got a chance. Many other teams only wish they had a chance. That’s why 6 teams drafted a QB first round last year. While we get to draft pieces of said team. We’re good and getting better. You’re gonna be just fine Griz. I’d bet on it.

I noticed Grizz did not mention John Van Dam when he was naming coaches. He must not have been too important. Not a big lose then? Good.

  4. Buddha Says:

Really happy for Baker. He gives you 10000 per cent every play, a working class quarterback.

  5. Allen Lofton Says:

It was fun watching the Eagles defensively dismantle Mahomes and the Ciefs offense. It brought back memories of Tom Brady and Todd Bowles’ defense manhandling the Chief.
Another good draft and Light bring on a Strong Free Agent Edge Rusher, the Bucs could be legit Super Bowl winners again.

It is extremely disappointing that the offense played so well last year only for the defense to be so cooked. I’m hoping we can do better this year. I remember reading an article from you where you said it would only make sense for Mayfield to regress a bit, and yet he got better. Could this be a 50 touchdown year? That would be nice!

100% in agreement about Baker. Good for Grizzard for giving Baker kudos.

Wonder if we fans realize how lucky we are to have gotten Baker off of that so called scrap heap.

Who was the genius who figured that one out. Licht? Bowles? Both?

Whatever unless MostlypeacefulTraskfan isn’t full of manure and Trask was the real deal the Bucs would be mired in post SB win hell. Once again on the outside looking in for a franchise QB!!

We know how that works out in the draft now don’t we. Josh Freeman selected in the First round 17th overall. Had one winning season in his 5+ years and a record of 24-35. And of course who can forget Fameis Jameis superstar?

Famies of course was the #1 pick of the entire draft also played just five years with ONE winning season like JFro. And Fameis matched JFros winning or lack thereoff with a total 28-42 record.

Do people realize that “lucking” into, or perhaps giving Bowles credit( forgive me this is JBF no poster is going to do that!) has meant for the Bucs.

We might be talking about yet a THIRD gamble in the draft.

    40 burgers for the wins.

Tommy Tuberville recruited and coached him too!
