Answer To Bucs’ Edge Rush Woes Available With Myles Garrett Demanding Trade

February 4th, 2025

Browns DE Myles Garrett.

Hey, if Joe can dream about Rachel Watson and Lincoln Riley, why not maybe the best defensive player in the league.

In case you are waking up from a multi-year slumber, the Bucs’ edge rush is a moon-crater-sized hole on a defense that has one of the worst pass defenses two years running. One way to significantly improve a pass rush is to have an edge rusher.

The Bucs haven’t had one since Bucs sacks king Shaq Barrett and Jason Pierre-Paul were both healthy back in 2021.

Yesterday, a potential answer to the Bucs’ edge rush woes emerged, and maybe the missing link in the Bucs making a real Super Bowl run. This answer is Myles Garrett.

Arguably the best edge rusher in the game just told the Cleveland Browns he has had it. He wants to be on a team that can make a Super Bowl run.

“Trade me,” Garrett told the Browns yesterday.

So, the question is are the Bucs willing to listen? The question with Garrett in no way should be, “Can he cover Chris Olave?”

Garrett hasn’t had less than 14 sacks in a season since 2020. Last year Yaya Diaby, Anthony Nelson and Joe Tryon-Shoyinka (three guys!) combined for 10.5 sacks. How could the Bucs not be interested in Garrett?

Joe, unfortunately, doesn’t expect the Bucs to trade for Garrett. First, his salary is steep. He’s due to make some $20 million, per Spotrac.com. So right off the bat, the Bucs are going to say they have to sacrifice someone’s salary in order to fit Garrett under the cap.

So who gets sacrificed to the pass rushing gods? Chris Godwin? Lavonte David? Jamel Dean?

Joe would absolutely move heaven and earth to land Garrett, who will turn 30 in December. But Joe doesn’t believe the Bucs are anywhere near as motivated. Probably “disinclined” would be the operative word.

Just like with Riley and Rachel, Joe can always dream.

I commented on this here website weeks ago about trading for Miles Garrett because there were rumors about him wanting out of Cleveland and on the next podcast y’all laughed it off and said they aren’t trading him.

Trade for Miles Garrett, resign Chris Godwin, sign a decent corner, draft all defense and we’re ready to go!

  2. firethecannons Says:

never going to happen, Jason Licht is a bargain hunter, Garrett is not going to be cheap

  3. Waterboy Says:

The salary I don’t think would be an issue but would you give up this?

“The Bears acquired Khalil Mack from the Raiders in 2018 when Mack was 27 years old (Garrett just turned 29 in December) in exchange for two first-round picks, a third-round pick, and a sixth. The Raiders, at the time, gave up Mack, a second-round pick, and a conditional fifth.”

You should be texting this exact message to Jason Licht every day until he blocks you.

  5. Noclu4u Says:

I very much doubt Bucs would make this move . Licht doesn’t give up draft capital. I think he should because they would be drafting around 26-30 with him on board . It would likely take 3 1st round picks to get him because Cleveland would know they would be getting late 1st rnd picks . Only way I see this happening is if Garrett demanded a trade to Tampa . He already said he want to win a Superbowl. .
Don’t hold your breath but definitely keep up your hope . Would catapult Bucs defense into top 10. Bowles would not have to blitz 75 percent of the time . Ahhh one can dream .

  6. kgh4life Says:

Licht should definitely make the trade, it would cost multiple 1st round picks so he probably won’t do it. On the other hand, Trey Hendrickson might be available and the cost won’t be as steep.

  7. FortMyersDave Says:

I heard o another outlet that the minimum the Browns would want is 2 first rounders and perhaps more if their is a bidding war as many teams need someone like Myles Garrett. Why not see what the Bengals want for Trey Hendricksen, dude had 17+ sacks in 2024, he will not cost as much and the Bengals are chopping salary to accommodate Jamaar Chase.

  8. FortMyersDave Says:

Waterboy mentioned Khalil Mack. He could be available as well…..

  9. OHBucFan Says:

If Cleveland makes a trade, it’s because Myles has forced it. Make no mistake, I would love for the Bucs to figure out a trade but this won’t be fleecing a team out of JPP for a third rounder. You’re talking about giving up at least two number ones and a player. At least. That equates to giving up three starters for one. I just don’t see it.

  10. MadMax Says:

    cost too much…no

  11. JustOneGame Says:

Offer them Dean, White, a 1st and swap second round picks for Garrett. We’re already going to lose Dean. Bucky took over RB1, Tucker showed enough to be Rb2 and White has value. Basically we lose a 1st and move up in the Second.

Licht should also extend that offer to the Raiders & Bengals for Crosby & Henderson.

  12. Billyboy Says:

A first and a 3rd qould do it

  13. BucVoyager Says:

This isn’t Madden. Draft picks are too valuable.

  14. Bucs Guy Says:

Hendrickson, Crosby or Garrett. I’m good with any of the 3. They all would be game changers and not destroy this year’s draft to rebuild the D. I trust Licht. I have zero problem giving up this year’s first round pick because all of them will be better than any rookie at #19, Add in Dean and RB White or Tucker. That should reduce the number or level of additional picks we have to give up next year.

    You got it JustOneGame

  15. Oxycondomns Says:

a team with a qb on a rookie contract is the best bet. commandos , texans, is purdy still on one. licht needs to pull another jpp type of player. no need to get the most expensive one salary wise and draft pick wise

  16. garro Says:

We can hope he will give us a contender discount Joe. Nope? Oh well…

    Go Bucs!

  17. heyjude Says:

Thank you for the explanation post, Joe.

If Garrett takes a discount it could be plausible. Otherwise, the 19th draft pick should be for a rusher.

  18. Vanessa Anne Says:

I’d love to see Garrett, Hendrickson or Crosby in pewter and red.

Our front office has shown it has the skills to make it happen financially, and still keep key players like Chris and LaVonte.

    However,

The Browns front office has been clear (so far) that it won’t consider trading Garrett.

    Just as importantly,

Coach Swiss Cheese has made it perfectly clear many times that he doesn’t think we need an edge rush.

What is the point of investing cash, draft capital, or trade capital in a Garrett or Crosby if the defensive scheme has them dropping back into coverage half the time?

Again, I’d love to see either/any one of them on our team, but with our current head coach and his defensive scheme, almost any price might be too high.

  19. Ted Says:

It’s amazing that most fans are saying that draft capital is to valuable to make a trade like this but everything I have seen is two first rounders would get it done. Cleveland is 35 million over the cap for 2025 and their GM can posture all he wants but he can’t even resign the custodian to clean the facility right now without making a move. Where we are drafting, we could draft another less than edge rusher who will get us 3.5 sacks or we can swing for the fences. Whoever trades for Garrett will be in a similar cap situation and will happily part with 2 to 3 high round picks to instantly improve their entire defense. It will end up being the Chiefs, Billy, Broncos or Eagles who probably pull this off…..somehow they know how to manipulate the cap and understand that they will not get anyone as talented drafting in the late first two years in a row as talented as Garrett.

  20. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

Oh this is easy peasy. Gift wrap dean and throw his lawn chair in with the deal, kinda like a bogo. 20 million is peanuts these days and next year it will be worth even less. Inflation has its way, so get what you want now. Next year it may be double, like insurance rates on your car.

  21. George R Says:

I would prefer Crosby. He is younger and I think we can trade for him for a second and maybe White.

I disagree with drafting all defense this year. Rookies take a year or two to develop. Bowles will be gone next year if his D is not fixed this year. Fix the D by bringing in defensive FA a Edge a CB and ILB then draft the best player available.

  22. Canabuc Says:

I’m gonna play devil’s advocate here. If, you look back at when we had sack Barrett on the team. There seemed to be a stretch where our pass defense was still among the worst in the league. Even though he was racking up double-digit sacks period I suspect that. Our system is the problem. Not the players when it comes to the edge rush.

2019 Barrett 19.5 sacks. We gave up 4600 passing yards and 30 TD
2024 Bucs 4400 passing yards against and 27 TD.

The scheme is the problem and an edge rusher isn’t the fix.

  23. BuckyBuc Says:

if ownership wants another superbowl then yea gotta get him or someone like the falcons will and then we are screwed

  24. Drunk Bucs Fan Says:

It would bother me if JL doesn’t try to get him, but I won’t be upset if he isn’t successful. The Browns side of this involves doing something to help Baker succeed and I bet they want no part of that.

  25. LakelandSteve Says:

Unfortunately the Bucs have several needs on defense before they are ready to actually compete for a Super Bowl. Trading for Garrett would be great but the draft capital we would have to give up to get him would really cut into our ability to draft the necessary people on defense to be competitive. If an edge rusher was all we needed to put us over the top we should do it. But unfortunately we still are a few players away on defense.

  26. Pickgrin Says:

    Ya’ll trippin….

Licht hates to give up even 4th and 5th rd picks. You think he’s going to trade TWO 1st rd picks for an aging superstar? Then have to figure out which credit cards to run up so as to pay for said edge rusher? (a position his coach doesn’t even seem to prioritize).

The Bucs are working hard this year at getting OUT of cap hell…. not further into debt. Paying off over $50M in dead cap hits for the 3rd year in a row….

Licht hates being cash strapped like this every year and is looking forward to 2026 when there will be SOME $ to actually spend freely in free agency.

As it stands right now – the Bucs only have about $5M in cap space available.

Re-signing Chris Godwin will be the highest priority and that will cost at least $15-18M. If LD54 decides to play another year – there’s another $7-9M that must be created….. they likely want Nelson back ($5M) – and also have to create $5M or more for the LG spot because Bredeson is not under contract either….

Diaby is solid as a 3rd year OLB – he’s very good against the run and will likely push for double digit sacks this year. Braswell showed some promise and is likely to make a substantial jump in his 2nd year. Nelson (if re-signed) is pretty good in spot duty as well Add a 1st round draft pick to that group and we should be at least OK if not good at OLB.

And for those claiming we’ll never get a good pass rusher at #19 – who was the 19th pick last year? Oh yea – some guy named Jared Verse…. (Kancey was #19 pick in 2023).

  27. ATLBucSolar Says:

Let’s hope that Baker is in Garrett’s ear and trying to get him to Tampa. Who wouldn’t want to play beside Vite Vea and Kancey? With our offense Garrett could reason that we’re Super Bowl Ready. And no state income tax is like adding about 3-5 million to his contract. C’mon Baker get to work!!!
He said that he wants to win a Super Bowl so he could possibly renegotiate his contract if he wants to come here.

  28. Bored N Norman Says:

This would entirely depend on if Baker agreed. Baker and Garret had a rough relationship with Browns, Baker called Garret out when he took off his helmet and bashed in the Steelers QB. Their where even rumors that the browns ask Garrett what they needed to win and he said a QB so with that they went after Watson.

  29. Pewter Power Says:

Give your friend a call baker

  30. BakerFan Says:

Hendrickson of Bengals is a better choice…. Bored in Norman is correct on Garret.

  31. Jake been there since the beginning Says:

It’s a lot to give up but it might be having him on the field, you better be like Nolan Ryan with that ball cause there’s a train coming at you all day long lol..

  32. Marine Buc Says:

“So who gets sacrificed to the pass rushing gods? Chris Godwin? Lavonte David? Jamel Dean?”

    Possibly all three…

Then use the draft and pick a CB in round 1. Pick a receiver in round 2. Pick an ILB in round 3.

Then sign another ILB in free agency.

    Go Bucs!

  33. Pewter Power Says:

    Beggars can’t be choosers

  34. It's Corn Says:

Defense is way too soft. Even with this one impact player, and maybe losing several others, does that seem like a Super Bowl team? Only reason you’d do it, if you’re one piece away.

  35. Jabber Says:

I don’t care what it takes go get him. I’ve seen this before over the years. 3rd rounder that can be a 2nd. Randy Moss went to the Pats for a 4th rounder. Closer to the draft he stays in Cleveland the cheaper he will be to trade for him. I’m sure Garrett will take less on a new deal with a chance to compete and no Florida income tax.

  36. Buc2Blame Says:

HE WANTS TO BE ON A TEAM THAT HAS A REAL LIFE CHANCE TO WIN A SUPERBOWL. That there alone disqualifies us 😂 like cmon let’s be REAL. For 1 he’s played with BAKER so he knows he’s not capable of being a Super Bowl winning QB🤷🏾‍♂️. 2nd say we do land him it’ll be a one yr rental, he won’t sign an extension or contract with us🤷🏾‍♂️ lemme guess (franchise tag him)😂😂 sit out n asked to be traded again. 3rd we don’t and won’t have the money for him🤷🏾‍♂️. 4th the defense has soooooooo many whole Garret alone can’t n won’t fix. That secondary is atrocious. 4th Jason will not give up picks “WE ALL KNOW THIS” even tho no one out the draft will bring what Myles will bring🤦🏾‍♂️. Last but not least 5 why the Bucs? Soooo many other teams in better positions to win it now, we’re at least 3 yrs away 🤷🏾‍♂️💯💯 only money would make him choose this team money we don’t have 🤷🏾‍♂️🤷🏾‍♂️ WHY THE BUCS???? I have 5 reasons why not now give me 5 why he or we will. 🤷🏾‍♂️🤷🏾‍♂️🤷🏾‍♂️🤷🏾‍♂️🤷🏾‍♂️🤷🏾‍♂️🤷🏾‍♂️🤷🏾‍♂️🤷🏾‍♂️🤷🏾‍♂️ idk why this fan base gets hype over ish like this

  37. Buc2Blame Says:

    Welp I gave ya 6 reasons 😂😂😂

  38. SlyPirate Says:

Is the question: Chris Godwin or Miles Garrett?

That’s not a question. DPOY, 6x Pro Bowl, 4x All-NFL First Team. Garrett is the best defensive player in the league. He’s the best pass rusher in the league. I love CG butt the Bucs need defense more than a WR.

  39. David Says:

If they can swing it with one first rounder And another pick next year, maybe throw in Dean. I would do it in a heartbeat.

If it’s two first rounders… not so sure

  40. Mike Johnson Says:

Myles Garrett is worth every penny of a 1st rounder and then some. Anytime a Defender is double-teamed consistently and still gets sacks and hurries like he does? Lets you know, he is a BEAST and he is THE MAN. Don’t tell me we cannot do it. We do not want to do it. We..are only concerned about winning the NFL South. Wanna know why KC is there every year? They go get those free agents.

  41. Gipper Says:

It isn’t complicated. There are no defensive players in this years draft that equal Myles Garrett. He would instantly solve many of the poor pass coverage issues that Tampa has. There is nothing quite like QB pressure to make a mediocre secondary look good. With a standard 4-3 defense, the combination of Kancey, Vea, Garrett and fill in the blank, the defense gets significantly better. Garrett is an athletic specimen who can give Tampa 5 good years.

  42. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

He takes too many plays off it its a running play. Hendrickson would be a better target than Prima Donna Garrett

  43. Aqualung Says:

Myles Garrett would not be interested in playing on this defense. He wants to rush the passer, not drop into Cover Who pass defense. Ain’t happening.

  44. C Sweet Says:

FINALLY Joe, a REAL answer to the Defensive line weakness‼️We need a “sackmaster” a la #99WarrenSapp! 👍😎 |🏴‍☠️

  45. Fred Says:

Yes, Dean can be set free He should be anyway A good guy, but hurt way TOO MUCH Garrett would be great, but its a daydream

  46. Mveal2006 Says:

Simeon, jpp. Hell, even walky chambers for that one year.

We drafted 10 first rounders at edge and we got was lee roy.

    Spend the money’s

  47. Mveal2006 Says:

On edge, our best trade / signings were simeon, jpp barrett. Chambers had one good year.
10 first rounders, all we got was lee roy.
Spend the money for Garrett is my vote.

  48. Mveal2006 Says:

Oops. Sorry. Argument with a cheap computer!

  49. Anyhony Says:

    1. Are we one player away? 2. Does he consider us a contender?

  50. Christina Olive Says:

He would be a dream signing if JL can pull that off I will pass out.

  51. John Bucs fan Says:

I love Chris Godwin, but I would not bring him back
