“I Couldn’t Throw A Strike”

February 2nd, 2025

Of course Joe is glued to all things Pro Bowl.

If it’s a form of football with Bucs around, Joe is interested.

One event at the watered down and nearly worthless Pro Bowl celebration in Orlando was dodgeball, where Bucs Pro Bowl QB Baker Mayfield worked as an ESPN announcer.

Among the nuggets Mayfield dropped was noting how hard it has been for him to do anything too athletic the past few days because he’s in the middle of his postseason rest time. Apparently, Mayfield will ramp back up his training soon. He’s already been spotted in Tampa at bars and been on a tropical vacation. Hey, earned it.

Joe also was intrigued to hear Mayfield talk about his high school baseball career. Mayfield said he played nearly every position but pitcher because he was too wild. He could throw hard, Mayfield said, but “I couldn’t throw a strike.”

That same guy who couldn’t get a ball over the plate just had a 71.4 percent completion rate this season in the National Football League.

    Footballs don’t go 100

  2. Bucs Guy Says:

Enjoy your downtime Baker. It will ramp up soon enough with the new OC.

And yet there are some here who yammered on about Baker’s “weak” arm!

  4. Permanently Moderated Says:

We’ve all seen what Baker can and does do for the Bucs. The dude is solid and I’m glad he’s here. I never followed his career, so I’m not tainted by what he did in the past. I’ve, so far, seen a lot of grit and determination from him. Go Bucs!

Love Baker. To get to MVP, just needs to work on accuracy. Remember when Josh Freeman worked that one offseason with Drew Brees and he had his best season ever. Do that and resign Chris Godwin and the offense will score more than 30 per game and with improvements in the defense we should have a shot at our 3rd Super Bowl.

  6. Aqualung Says:

Super great he is the Bucs QB. Kudos to Jason, and to Todd for pushing and being the strong advocate.

  7. Erik Hesson - Fine Artist Says:

The difference in Arm Strength between Baker and the rest of the NFL Qb’s is pretty stark.

Baker has the strongest arm and fastest fastball in the NFL.

Watch the accuracy skills comp at the Probowl from a couple days ago.

Baker has a cannom compared to the other QB’s.

And he’s obviously very accurate too..

I wouldn’t trade him for any other Qb in the league. 💯

  8. SenileSenior Says:

Sounds like he is comparable to John Elway. He was noted as having a “hardball”. Both are among my favorite NFL players.

    Go Bucs!

  9. PSL Bob Says:

I had mixed emotions when he was brought into the Bucs. But now, I’m so glad he’s here. I really believe he will get us back to the SB.

  10. Durango 95 Says:

We (rightfully ?) salute CTB and the Big Guy but is enough acknowledgment paid to Bruce Arians when it comes to Baker and the Bucs. If memory serves that is where the genesis of Baker-mania started in the organization.

    Props to Gus Swayze.

  12. Baking with Grizz Says:

    Gus is the man! Lol

  13. Buc king Says:

I like baker but I don’t believe in him

  14. Mike Says:

Did you see the pro bowl qb skills contest he was last for the nfc team
Behind sam darnold. Remember joe your article sam darnold is no baker Mayfield

  15. Rod Munch Says:

It’s remarkable how uninteresting they’ve made the pro-bowl. I literally forgot that it was happening – not that it would mattered since there was zero chance I’d turn it on. I did look to see if there were any highlights of the Bucs players – but came up empty, so not sure if they didn’t do anything, or if no one was even watching it to cut some videos.

To be MVP, you need to actually win in crunchtime. You can’t lose two playoff games in a row where you got the ball in your hands late in the 4th quarter and you turn it over in the biggest moment of the game.

He needs to listen to what Brady said, and stop worrying about the locker room being fun, and double down on it being a job and a business, and work on all the details and get a lot more serious. If he does that, maybe he levels up and doesn’t collapse in the biggest moments.
