Liam Coen On Josh Grizzard

February 1st, 2025

December words.

Some readers don’t appreciate that Joe is on the level with fans.

Now Joe has no way of knowing if, back in December, then-Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen was being a good colleague and not wanting to be a glory hog at his own news conference. And, as a result, he wanted to spread good cheer right before Christmas. Or perhaps Coen was truly sincere.

But Joe wanted to offer up Coen’s words then on his eventual successor, new Bucs offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard.

The Bucs had the NFL’s best third-down offense this season. The Bucs converted 51 percent of their third downs!

Coen told the local pen and mic club a week before Christmas that success was because Grizzard because is in his sphere of influence.

Grizzard, per Coen, would break down tape of opponents’ and craft plays that could work on third downs and exploit defensive weaknesses or tendencies. He then would hand his work over to Coen.

“I think, first of all, shoutout to Josh [Grizzard] and really the staff in general have done a phenomenal job throughout the whole year. The guys in charge of those areas – Thad Lewis is in charge of the red zone, ‘B-Mac’ (Brian McClendon) is in charge of two-minute, and ‘Grizz’ (Grizzard) happens to be in charge of third downs.

“Their ideas, plays, and thoughts and schemes is what does come to life as what you see on Sunday. Definitely, not all of those plays come right from me – we have a full staff.”

So if Coen was sincere, this explains why the Bucs wanted so badly to keep the band together. Not only because the Bucs had great success with that music, but Joe is going to take a wild stab and suggest responsibilities won’t change much, except for Grizzard’s.

The same guys will be in charge of the same downs, though the Bucs may bring someone in to help Grizzard on third downs.

So even though losing an coordinator causes disruption, it seems the Bucs are trying, with Grizzard, to mitigate it.

And keep Baker Mayfield happy in the process.

joe can you please make liam go away………….asking for a friend

  2. Pahpahmike Says:

Joe, that’s the question I was asking in the last article. Was the offense all Coen and his play calling or was it Coen calling plays from a game plan that Grizzard and the other offensive assistant had put together. I hear Grizzard was the 3rd down specialist and a big part of the Bucs success last season seems to have been from the sucess they had on 3rd downs.

The logic behind the hire seems to be sound. Despite having what some have called a thin resume he would appear to have the right experience. It would have to be considered a plus that he’s already in the building as well. His staff will be the same, all good things. He has a lot of really good players. On paper it seems they have made the logical choice to continue what Coen started. Fingers crossed it all works out.

  4. heyjude Says:

Sounds like Coen knew who were doing a lot of the work. Good for him for saying it.

Pahpahmike – Agreed. Thinking the same.

  5. MRWright88 Says:

Agree- unless there’s big new news, need to make Liam go away from these pages. His continued “presence” is like the skanky ex-girlfriend that won’t go away.

  6. OrlandoBucsFan Says:

Gotta stop showing Benedict Coen in Bucs gear. Looks sacrilegious joe !!

  7. Truth be Told Says:

    Now about that Secondary….

  8. Bucfan Says:

Cut Coen some slack. He needed time to make the RIGHT decision. He was going to stay but then realized he was nuts for sticking around for another year with Bowles. Looking back on the Commoners game, kind of looked like the Bucs were playing not to lose rather than being aggressive, a Bowles trait!

  9. JimBobBuc Says:

I like the continuity play with the playbook retained to reduce the learning curve this coming season. Grizz, Thad, and B-Mac in the passing game, with Carbs and Pic in the run game. Hopefully Grizz can bring in some Mike McDaniel run concepts too. On to free agency! LFG!

  10. dbbuc711 Says:

Kind of surprised I haven’t seen anything from Baker on all this.

  11. Stl bucfan Says:

I have a feeling Coen is good now have a rough the me of what t in Jax.
The Jag(offs) have hired experienced HC and couldn’t get it together, they’ve hired college coaches to try and tap into the college style and failed.
A first time young HC just seems like it’s destined to fail.
Love my Bucs so let’s get the Def tightened up and get at it!

  12. Stl bucfan Says:

    *going to* not good now.
    Stupid auto correct

  13. BootyLover Says:

Not to harp on ugliness, but are Coen’s eyes and overall face more crooked than his word.

  14. Scott Says:

Where are the run game experts?

  15. Josh Says:

Only clicked on this article to say. As a Bucs fan move on who cares let’s make him regret leaving and get a ring this year. MORE MOTOVATION!! No more Liam “snake” Coen on any Buccaneers site please he’s a Jaguar hope they suck!!

  16. BA’s Red Pen Says:

    If Coen was sincere……lol

  17. John m Says:

If Joshl was so great, why didn’t El Serpiente tried to steal him?

  18. Mr. Editor Says:

The success on third down had something to do with Baker Mayfield scrambling, and I imagine that some of the plays that were called were designed to give him room to do just that. I just held my breath every time he ran.

  19. stpetebucsfan Says:

Grizz or Thad were the obvious choices! They selected Grizz OVER Thad! Does that mean we get to stop all the moronic “Rooney Rule” conversations?

The “supposed” downside is that Grizz has not called plays. Again IMO it’s as much an art as a science and we have to hope he develops HIS feel for calling a game quickly. I have confidence because of his QB.

Remember it’s only been in my lifetime (yeah I know that’s forever Rod:-) that “coaches” called the plays. The QB’s all called their own games. And old school QB’s really blanched at the idea of a “coach” calling the plays. The “old school” guys felt THEY were in the game and had the best “feel” of what was actually going on, which players were tired, hurt, not focused etc. They knew where THEY wanted to attack.

You can agree or disagree with the “old school” guys but they did have a point.

I bring this up because of all the QB’s in the NFL there are none nearly as qualified as Baker Mayfield to call his own plays!

Am I suggesting the Bucs go all 1950’s and simply let Baker call the plays?
Of course not. But Baker is certainly now qualified to be an OC after the 7 previous OC’s he’s worked for.

My point is simple. Baker “could” call his own plays but why waste all the technology and the “eye in the sky” up in the press box who have a better view than Baker or Grizz. Grizz will have the formality of the final decision, unless Baker checks out of the play. OC will be a truly TEAM effort and the Bucs will be FINE!!!

  20. Colonel Angus Says:

    Coen kinda looks like Squidward.

  21. Beeej Says:

“The guys in charge of those areas – Thad Lewis is in charge of the red zone, ‘B-Mac’ (Brian McClendon) is in charge of two-minute, and ‘Grizz’ (Grizzard) happens to be in charge of third downs.”

That’s fascinating, the way they divide those tasks. I’d have never thought of that in a million years

  22. Pewter Power Says:

Thad Lewis was the red zone guy seems they would have tried to keep him also. He’s a former quarterback he should know enough to be the passing game coordinator. Did anyone fill that void?

  23. Marky mark Says:

    Backstabber

  24. Allbuccedup Says:

I don’t why everyone is ticked at Coen for leaving if you can make 6 or 7 times the salary your making at your current job for a new job feet don’t fail me now I am gone. This keeping the band together philosophy with the age of some are players is not as attracted as it used to be.

  25. Allen Lofton Says:

Whatever was working for Coen should be implemented. If it’s by committee the responsibility stills falls on the OC and Todd Bowles.
The Bucs found a way to keep the contentunity.

  26. Anyhony Says:

@ Allbuccedup: Do you read the comments? Most of us are pissed because he gave his word that he would stay, even texting players and publicly removing his name from consideration for the Jags job. He gave us false hope for continuity with the offense and qb for the first time in four years! Or, maybe that’s just me.

  27. Tbbucs3 Says:

More articles about Bozo the Clown.

  28. CantordeDios Says:

The league needs to set up rules to not let former employees dismantle and grab whomever they want from their former team. If a former employee becomes someone elses glorified hero let him then show what he can truly do, after all, hes being paid big bucs to shine, let him grab from somewhere other than his previous team, and see how far he goes. Its not fair for a team to deal with replacing him, and then replacing all the assistants he takes with him.

  29. Durango 95 Says:

If you would like to see less mention of Coen on this website then stop mentioning Coen on this website. Signed, common freakin’ sense.

  30. HC Grover Says:

    Bucs make a good call.

  31. HC Grover Says:

We need to keep the O going and putting up lotta points to make up for “The Bozo Cover None Defense”.

  32. Mveal2006 Says:

I used to think was too team friendly during the lost decade but he proved me wrong about a lot of things, including Jason Mike Evans, and several guys.

Joe’s endorsement o realize is a good reason to assume we have the right and not be worried about what’s coming

  33. David Says:

Some consistency and stability would be fantastic for this offense, just throw in a few new wrinkles And take a couple shots of game downfield

  34. garro Says:

Learned a long time ago listen to liars only in order to figure out what their game is. Why do I care what this man said?

    Come on Man!

    Go Bucs!
