Bucs Block Another Coach From Interviewing With Liam Coen, Jags
January 31st, 2025Someone at One Buc Palace is still sore.
Earlier this week it was reported that former Bucs offensive coordinator and current coach of the Jags, Liam Coen, made an attempt to lift Bucs offensive line coach Kevin Carberry.
Since Carberry is under contract with the Bucs, Jacksonville first had to get permission from Tampa Bay to interview him. The Bucs put a Tristan Wirfs-like block on Coen.
Since, per Adam Schefter of BSPN, Coen once again tried to hit on the Bucs. The Jags asked for permission to interview assistant offensive line coach Brian Picucci, who served as a quality control coach with Coen at Kentucky.
The Bucs once again stiff-armed Coen.
For background, teams cannot block assistants from interviewing for coordinator jobs. And if Coen tried to create a shell position or a phony job title like “assistant head coach” to lure Carberry, then the NFL could block the move.
For lateral moves, the NFL allows teams to block assistants under contract.
Joe isn’t worried about Picucci. In Joe’s mind, Coen can have him. It’s Carberry that Joe is worried about. He did a wonderful job with the Bucs offensive line.
Since Coen’s proposed raise is a thing of the past, Joe thinks Team Glazer should reward Carberry with a chunk of the Team Glazer loot they had initially set aside for Coen.
No favors: Buccaneers blocked Jacksonville’s request to interview its assistant offensive line coach, Brian Picucci, who left Kentucky with Liam Coen to go to Tampa. Jags were able to hire Coen, but not Picucci.

The balls on that guy.

Agree that Carberry deserves a raise, the trick for the FO is trying to determine if his loyalty lies with the Bucs or with Coen. Throwing him big $$ only to have him bolt for Jax as soon as his contract expires could be seen as a waste. Adding an OC with ties to Carberry’s time with the Rams could help ease that concern a bit.
January 31st, 2025 at 11:07 am
I’m going to take great pleasure watching this dude crash n burn in Jax.
January 31st, 2025 at 11:12 am
I’d go with Jags owner Khan. He’s opening up them pocketbooks. Paying 3 to 4 times what Buc coaches are making. Its all about the MONEY.
January 31st, 2025 at 11:13 am
Sounds like Coen needs the Bucs at Jacksonville more than we need him here.
Props to Jason Licht. We all saw Coen’s true traits too.
January 31st, 2025 at 11:13 am
Yep, I’m tired of this Coen guy thinking he’s smarter than the Bucs he has ever right to get the HC job on that dumpster fire but kudos Bucs for telling the jags to pound sand. Now if the assistants in Tampa are loyal to the Bucs pay them & please hurry with hiring a OC & let’s move on & start building a dependable DEFENSE. GO BUCS!!!!

Seems to me JL, is still pissed….. Me too
January 31st, 2025 at 11:21 am
After that introductory presser, he just seems goofy, immature and naive.
Maybe he’ll be a fantastic head coach, who knows at this point – but Jacksonville has been a one-way ticket to the unemployment line for a parade of coaches.
Having opportunities blocked for “his guys” is a natural extension of his actions.

Joe I agree about Carberry. I don’t quite understand Coen, you leave an organization in the most crappy way as possible and you ask them for a favor 2 weeks later. One other thing I haven’t seen mentioned yet. Joe, do you think maybe Coen was pissed because in his new contract the Bucs didn’t mention HC in waiting?
January 31st, 2025 at 11:42 am
I would think, given their success, that NFL teams would be courting every coach, assistant coach within the Chief’s organization. Andy Reid should be replacing his staff every year…lol. And maybe he is. I have no idea. I know these various coaching positions can be a revolving door, with a coach leaving for more money or whatever…look at Coen, he bounced around to a different organization every year it seems since he started coaching. In my experience, as an employer, we would look somewhat negatively at a person who changes jobs/companies every year or so. But that doesn’t seem to be the case in the world of football.
January 31st, 2025 at 11:51 am
@Joe, was that a Tristan Wirfs-like block or a Mike Evans-like block when he picked up Terrance Newman
January 31st, 2025 at 11:52 am
No, the snakes head needs to be cut off. lol
January 31st, 2025 at 11:53 am
I’m good with this as long as they are not upsetting the coaches on their staff
January 31st, 2025 at 11:54 am
The issue here is that if these coaches want to actually go to Jacksonville and we’re blocking these requests, that can only hurt the Bucs long-term imo
January 31st, 2025 at 11:54 am
Not sure how “p!ssed” he could be at the Bucs if that didn’t happen. It’s against league rules. It violates the Rooney Rule. Now that doesn’t mean there isn’t a handshake agreement (coughBruceArianscough) but it can’t be put in writing.
January 31st, 2025 at 11:55 am
Picucci is a backup plan just in case Coen creates a shell for Carberry Sam’s weasels him away.
January 31st, 2025 at 12:00 pm
This dude needs therapy and apparently he thinks everything is all good or he’s having trouble trying to fill out his roster. Maybe no one in the NFL likes what he did to the Bucs and thinks he won’t last long. He’s too dumb to try and make up with the Bucs first
January 31st, 2025 at 12:00 pm
I can’t wait till that clown fails in Jacksonville….
Glad to see that Coen love fest that went on amongst Bucs fans all season coming to an end. Only a few of us saw that this guy was an overrated clown all along.
January 31st, 2025 at 12:01 pm
When Canales left he took coaches that came along with him from his time @ Seattle. No problem.
Coen leaves and wants a guy he worked with @ UK as recent as 2023 and was his Coach @ U Mass. Blocked.
What it is coming down to is ‘Hell hath no fury as a woman scorned’ and it appears that Licht and some others are acting like Lil’ Beaches.

————————-
maybe they think that the coaches they have now are better than the ones they let leave with canales? you do realize that the bucs aren’t the only team that’s blocking interviews for lateral moves, right?
it’s not a bitch move to want people who signed a contract with you and are doing a good job to stay. anyone with good business sense would do the same, and from what ive seen of the bucs front office, it’s not lacking in business sense.
January 31st, 2025 at 12:25 pm
Wonder how Carberry and Picucci feel about the situation. Not really great having unhappy employees hanging around. If JL and the Glazers had been making the right moves near the end of the season then all of this could have been avoided. Right now they are just trying to mitigate their losses and kind of looking a little greasy doing it. You can bet that other coaches around the league notice this stuff.
January 31st, 2025 at 12:26 pm
One Buc is a disaster area.
January 31st, 2025 at 12:29 pm
I think the Glazers were smart enough not to want the guy for a head coach even if he waited until Bowles resigned. Can you imagine if we had such a dishonest weasel as HC of the Bucs? I guess some of you could, but I was NEVER on that bandwagon. I wonder how these coaches he brought will be good for us this year.
January 31st, 2025 at 12:32 pm
Duval rat@#$% needs to keep his snake paws to himself
January 31st, 2025 at 12:35 pm
Not sure why this is a headline. The Bucs have every right to block unless it’s a promotion. Can’t just let teams cherry pick our coaches unless it is justifiable as in promotion. This isn’t about the Bucs beeing petty or still pissed off. It’s about these guys are under contract so kick rocks.
January 31st, 2025 at 12:39 pm
lol Sounds like Coen and agent didn’t know this rule. One-year NFL OC gonna build a monster Jag coaching squads from a bunch of vet NFL coaches with no history. Welcome to Jags!
January 31st, 2025 at 12:43 pm
Crickett Baker – Agreed.
I never wanted Bowles fired for him either. Never on the full bandwagon. Yes, Coen did well but look who he had as players. Bucky, Mike, Baker, McMillan, et al. They all made him look good.
When Coen started making those cutesy plays he was showing more of himself. They were awful. And then the last game when he already knew he was being interviewed he was already gone.
January 31st, 2025 at 12:46 pm

Crickett, couldnt agree more! Unfortunately we live in an era where dishonest weasels are extremely popular. They are the best most dishonest weasels you have ever seen. And integrity is a long lost trait that has been replaced with pride/ignorance
January 31st, 2025 at 12:47 pm
Lolololol….you guys are so funny…………
This must be the Homer thread because of all the anger over something that you have ABSOLUTELY NO CONTROL – hence the name calling/agression
BE HONEST for one – over 50% of you Homers would have done the exact same thing as Coen did – oh yes you would have. The opportunity to become a HC in the NFL is such a rarity that none of the Homers posting will ever come close to an opportunity like that IN YOUR LIFETIME.
He is gone – close the door and move on.
Block the other coaches? Why not? They are under contract with us so the Glazers were fine doing that
Stop encouraging the Joes to take the low road like Coen did because once Joes write “snake/easel/etc. you Homers take the bait like a tiger rips into a raw prime rib.
The question people need to ask is this: Does Carberry have the goods to be an OC? Not if the Bucs want to make it their OC, but is that potential there?
Yes – then give the man a raise and move on
No – then let him go to greener pastures and next man up.
Stay positive
January 31st, 2025 at 12:47 pm
FUNNIEST PART OF THIS …
It’s the NFL standard to block all lateral move requests. It has been this way forever. Teams never/super rarely make these requests because they are always blocked. The Bucs aren’t doing anything beyond standard operating procedure.
The Jags’ exec staff are the NFL equivalent of a JV team.
January 31st, 2025 at 12:49 pm
Wednesday was Chinese New Year – Year of the Snake
Does that mean Jacksonville has a built-in advantage with Coen in 2025? LOL
January 31st, 2025 at 12:50 pm
Licht should ask the Jags for permission to interview Anthony Campanile (who Coen just hired) for Defensive Coordinator here. And capture the look on his face right after the ask.
January 31st, 2025 at 1:01 pm
In a way it just goes to show how unconnected Coen is with coaches around the league. He only knows two offensive line coaches? Maybe he should try luring Kentucky’s O line coach for the NFL. This is what happens when you change jobs like underwear, you don’t make long lasting relationships.
January 31st, 2025 at 1:02 pm
Jus saying dude had no phone for 2 days why call now lol
January 31st, 2025 at 1:08 pm
He probably swore to Shad that he would be able to bring over any Bucs assistant he wanted
January 31st, 2025 at 1:08 pm
Who cares how the other coaches feel. They are contracted employees making bank. I’m sure they’ll be ok not working with their buddy
January 31st, 2025 at 1:14 pm
Heh heh. Fck him
January 31st, 2025 at 1:14 pm
Coen’s desperation to hire a line coach away from the bucs diminishes his value imo. It’s the proverbial chicken and egg. Who was more instrumental in the improved run game? Bucky, Carberry, or Coen? He already has Hubbard, so it seems to me Coen thinks he needs someone from the Carberry OL tree to duplicate his run game success. Elevate Carberry to run game coordinator and give the man a raise.
January 31st, 2025 at 1:17 pm
Good. They don’t owe him any favors. And as someone else said, blocking lateral moves is generally common. The only reason it’s getting any pub is because of the way Coen bailed. I have no problem with Licht and the Glazers doing this. None whatsoever.
And to those of you “you would have taken the job, too” folks, you’re right. However most folks would not have done it like he did. That is where the hate comes from.
January 31st, 2025 at 1:19 pm

Clearly Coen thinks he needs someone from the Carberry OL coaching tree to duplicate the success of last yr’s run game. He already has Hubbard, so…
January 31st, 2025 at 1:20 pm
The two offensive line coaches that left with Canales, their contracts were up. They had contracts on the table but they declined. Maybe they thought they had more job security with Canales?
January 31st, 2025 at 1:47 pm
Updates? Or are they waiting till after the super bowl to snag an Eagles or chiefs guy?
January 31st, 2025 at 1:51 pm
you’d think he’d steer clear of the bucs after that shi*…
but duke comes a knockin’ like the foosball champion he is…
sideline pass to ko kieft in the preseason game, on a full steam ahead crossing pattern, right into coen’s wheelhouse…
with a wwe forearm shiver to the head as he goes out of bounds…
for the win !

Good, hopefully he does not make any of these guys his OC coordinator. I see that Jags also interviewed Nate Scheelhaase for their vacant OC job. Coen going in same direction as Tampa with interviews.
January 31st, 2025 at 2:04 pm
i thought coen would be calling the plays over there
January 31st, 2025 at 2:06 pm
Kick rocks El serp
January 31st, 2025 at 2:08 pm
Can’t blame Coen for taking the job. Don’t blame the Bucs for securing their operation after the El Serpiente disruption.
Jaghead in bed.
January 31st, 2025 at 2:30 pm
Were the Bucs supposed to roll over since Coen got a HC job? Were they just supposed to let their whole offense coaching staff leave (that is under contract with no promotion) because Coen got a promotion with another team? Those two things aren’t smart business decisions.
January 31st, 2025 at 2:50 pm
When are the Bucs going to hire a new OC?
January 31st, 2025 at 3:02 pm
Not sure I’ve ever seen a group of (presumably) grown men so fixated on a dude that came to town, did a great job, then went out and claimed a contract that will secure him for the rest of his life…I know, I know “it’s is not what he did it is the way he did it”. Holy crap you guys can’t be serious. Looks like you even game him a name, too. Wow. Here’s a thought. Things in life are not always going to work out the way you want and people are going to do things that you don’t like. These type of things happen in business every single day. I’m stunned. Some of you seriously sound like a bunch of whiny, loser, wuss boys. Boo Freakin’ Hoo…If you want to work yourself up take a look at the mess that is OBP.

January 31st, 2025 at 7:51 pm
Sorry not sorry. Prob be different if he didn’t slither his way out of Tampa
January 31st, 2025 at 8:38 pm
Allow them to interview in exchange for their 1st round draft pick. Simple.
