“Absolute Chaos”

January 24th, 2025

Making sense of craziness.

Former NFL punter and current media juggernaut Pat McAfee’s head seems to be spinning as much as Joe’s.

McAfee, on his popular show today, is trying to make sense of what he called the “absolute chaos” of what happened the past 24 hours or so between the Bucs, the Jags and Liam Coen.

McAfee acknowledged that nerves are raw on the West Coast of the East Coast with how this Coen drama shook out. He also was careful to use the word “allegedly” many times because no one with the Jags or Bucs or Coen himself has gone on the record to explain what the hell happened in this NFL love triangle.

This is the craziest Bucs story Joe has seen since the Josh Freeman drama in 2013.

The signing of Tom Brady was right up there, too. Honorable mention to Antonio Brown’s vaccine card and subsequent shenanigans.

If Coen actually gets 10 million (which I doubt) that puts him just behind Dan Campbell and Sean McDermott at 11 million a year. Dan Quinn, Mike McCarthy and Lefluor make 4.5 million per year.

    Coen is worth 10? NFW.

As Jax’s top choices dropped off the board one by one and their list of became three at the bottom it became a case of supply and demand period.

Jaguars will finish last in their Division a few years in a row, Coen will get fired and Jax will end up paying most of the Money, some College will pick up some and Coen will give up a chunk if he wants to stay in the Coaching Field.
Mayfield can explain exactly how that works.

Upside for Jax is they could quite possibly have the #1 pick the next 3 seasons and peddle them at a value of well over 20 million each and still end up with some good players.

Canales will see a Playoff game long before Coen if he sees one at all.

With Coen Khan will double his 30, 40 or 50 million dollar investment easily just by picking from the ugly one’s 15 minutes before the bar closed.

His show and GameDay are electric. With all the Coen drama, somehow this comment is the worst take I’ve seen all day.

    McAfee saved that show.

I think Brady’s final season tops this by a MILE!!! Retire for 40 days and leave Jason and Todd left holding the bag. Then all the drama of Brady going to Miami, Jason enforces the contract forcing Brady to either be a Buc or retire.

How did that work out? FORCING Brady to honor his contract? It turned out to be Todd’s worst season, he improved every year since! Forcing people to honor their contracts or their word when they really want to do something else RARELY works out well so why don’t we stop looking for scapegoats.

LC did not make a LATERAL move which WOULD have reflected poorly on the Bucs. He took a giant LEAP up the food chain, both realizing his long held dream and getting very wealthy. He used his LEVERAGE! His father was a football coach, don’t know if he’s still alive but how proud do you think he is of his son. On a simple human level we should celebrate this!!!

I get DISAPPOINTMENT but it’s not need to panic or look for scapegoats!!!

I say find out where he lives and egg his house.

He disappointed thousands of fans when he reneged on his word. I can see why he made the move. If he only lasts one year with the Jags he will be pretty much set for life, monetarily. However, since he said that being OC for the Bucs was the most fun he has ever had, I sincerely doubt he will ever say that again about another team.

Don’t give him any more press!

Waiting for our new OC. AND DC

    Pat rocks.
Hope we all get to revisit this next year with huge smiles on our faces. The players play.

Liar, coward and greedy is not 3 endearing qualities that I want from a coach. Jax gave Coen 13 million reasons to be all of those. Good bye and good riddance. Also please don’t even return to Tampa for a future vacation. You make our air stink.

  11. Gipper Says:

Alex Van Pelt is available as OC after NE hired Vrable and brouht back Josh McDaniels as OC.

Van Pelt knows Mayfield well from their Cleveland Days. Think these two could work together quite well in Tampa.

I’m in the minority, but I don’t think Coen made a smart move professionally. He’s only had one year at the OC level, a successful one, but with a very competent franchise. I think a professional has to have proven his ability over time. Would his schemes from last year hold up to adjustments made by opponents next year? Would he find countermoves himself? Will he be able to deal with a variety of player personalities? In the playoff game, his offense was shut down, except for Mayfield’s almost faultless passing and impromptu running. Yes, time of possession was limited, but in the last quarter, instead of sticking to the passing game, he made stretches for running plays that appeared unrehearsed. At any rate, he could use some more vetting at OC before making the jump, in my opinion. And jumping from a lower position on a ten-win franchise to a higher level on a four-win franchise may be a leap too far.

Assistant coaches come and go. Bucky Irving played just as big a role if not bigger than Coen. Without Irving Coen would’ve had to make do with Mr. Stutter Step and a Yard Rashad White. Irving made a tremendous difference. And he will next year with or without Liam Coen.
