Jordan Schultz: Liam Coen’s Chance To Reach His Dream May Have Won Out

January 23rd, 2025

“Sorry, Bake.’Turns out I like tall quarterbacks with long, Fabio-like blonde hair.”

Joe has learned when it comes to Liam Coen, unless and until the Jags officially announce he’s their new head coach, there’s a chance he isn’t.

FOX NFL insider Jordan Schultz, just before his appearance on “Speak for Yourself” seen weekdays on FS1, got off the phone or text chain with his contacts with the Bucs and Jags and had background info on the Coen drama between the Bucs (former?) offensive coordinator, and maybe Jags head coach.

Apparently, after Coen told the Jags thanks but no thanks yesterday, Jags owner Shad Con Khan aggressively stalked and hounded Coen to get him to change his mind.

Schultz noted that Coen had a helluva setup in Tampa. Winning team. Maybe a Super Bowl team next fall. Loads of Team Glazer loot and his close relationship with Todd Bowles and Baker Mayfield.

As Coen said in his last press conference with the local pen and mic club, his dream was to be an NFL head coach. Now he had a chance with a former No. 1 overall pick at quarterback (like Mayfield), a decent running back and a special rookie receiver.

What changed Coen’s mind? Trent Baalke. The former Jags general manager was fired by Khan the moment Coen told the Jags no.

Schultz said now, Coen could have a chance to hire the general manager of his choosing, which of course could buy him years of job security.

Think about it: Khan was ready to hang on to Urban Meyer and Baalke until it became impossible to retain their services.

And years of job security means millions and millions of dollars.

You can see and hear Schultz describe what happened with Coen yesterday and today in the FS1 video below.

    bum
    (no class)

  2. M Core Says:

And now we will have the real Lovie Bowles stand up and give us a sub .500 season and then he’ll be fired.

  3. Benedict Coen Says:

Absolute scum. There needs to be a rule put in to protect teams from these flip-flopping coordinators. The Bucs are unfortunate victims of their own success and have lost coordinators annually. This is different though, it has a slimy optic….

  4. Demete Says:

Enjoy your home games in Europe.

  5. BucfaninMi Says:

Snake. I hope they completely and utterly fail so bad they kick them to the UK

  6. Scott Says:

    Guys a snake,hope he fails

  7. Zzbucs Says:

    Disgusting human being…
Get out of town and take your low class to north Florida…

  8. Watch Daddy Sling It Says:

It’s such a small and insular ecosystem – agents and organizations track how you get these opportunities. Yes, Parcells and Spurrier jilted the Bucs multiple times — they also had exponentially more street cred than a one-year NFL play caller. Sure, if Jerry Jones is calling, it’s reasonable to do whatever to get that job. Khan and the jags aren’t that. Earn your pathway to the corner office.

  9. Durango 95 Says:

I can’t even bring myself to watch that noise. Oh man. I hate to see this happen. This will go down in the annals with Booker Reese and Bill Parcells.

  10. CottlevilleBuc Says:

The question are any of the offensive assistants that were on Coen’s staff still under contract and if so can the Bucs deny permission? Coen may try to poach them such as the O Line coach, receivers and rb coach?

  11. BucsBeast Says:

Screw Liam. A man’s word is a bond.
That POS can’t be trusted. Bucs should fire him right now.
I was a fan, but his character showed. He’s a damn snake in the grass.
Once this is public he’ll have a hard time being trusted.

  12. SteveK Says:

This is tough. We chose to retain our HC who has won 8, 9, 10 games and is 1-2 in playoffs. We have the bottom of the barrel pass defense/rush, and we are choosing essentially to stay the course and not go after retaining Coen as Hc.

I respect Licht and the Glazers staying their course, we’ll see if we can get a good Oc.

I do expect the defense to improve and carry their weight next year.

It would suck really bad to see Coen in the playoffs next year while we get destroyed in soft-serve zone defense with a toothless edge rush. Yikes.

  13. Ultra ClodHopper Says:

Maybe if the Jags fired Baalke before Aaron Glenn took the Jets job, it would have him instead of Coen.

  14. SteveK Says:

    So much emotion lol

Coen was made an offer he cannot refuse an a promotion. He gave us a great year and deserves his shot. It’s not like our HC has the 28th ranked pass defense and a toothless edge rush.

Expect big changes on defense and big improvement.

Sad to see Coen go, but good for him.

  15. Knothead71 Says:

Ok. Nothing is set in stone. Maybe this is bad reporting from the national guys (we’ve seen that before).
Bit if Coen is that slimy and has that little character,
I say good riddance to bad rubbish.
    Go enjoy J-ville.
Side note, I grew up in Duval County, out west of Jax “proper”. I visit regularly. It is a democrat controlled crap hole that is starting the slide down to Philly, Chicago or NY.
Not where I would want to raise kids or put down roots.

  16. QB6 Says:

GRIMY… This situation was handled with absolutely no integrity or class.

Anyone who looked at his history could see the pattern—a track record of not staying anywhere for long. Had he handled this properly, he would have had my well wishes.

Now, he deserves the chaos of Jacksonville’s dysfunctional organization. And let’s be honest, Trevor Lawrence is no Baker Mayfield.

  17. Jim Mc Says:

I was hoping that Coen would stay. I was excited when he signed that massive contract. I’m disappointed that he is likely going to Jax. But I’m not angry with him. There is a system in place in the NFL that allows assistants to move up the food chain. Coen is playing within the rules. Loyalty is not a thing in any business.
Or maybe I should say that it occurs so rarely that’s shocking when it occurs.
I’m guessing that most fans would be more than willing to use an offer to force a raise, and imply you’ll stay if an even better situation came available for a grare top job with a big salary.

  18. FortMyersDave Says:

Cottleville, if an assistant coach is under contract, Coen can only poach them if they are offered a promotion (say OL coach to OC), no lateral moves unless the Bucs give them permission to talk to other teams which is highly doubtful.

  19. orlbucfan Says:

If this crap is true, you can bet Baker Mayfield has severed emotional ties with birdbrain Coen. The players will be going apesh1t including the Defense and Special Teams. Credibility counts and Coen sure doesn’t have it now.

  20. Kazanmazz Says:

Jim mc, your absolutely right. These fans are just butt hurt that someone is doing what’s best for them.

  21. Drunkinybor Says:

Liam please leave. Tou turn coat. That guy xan go eat a bag of D’s
