Jags Play-By-Play Man: Jacksonville Made Second Run At Liam Coen And He’s “Torn”

January 23rd, 2025

“Look, Jason. I fake left and go right.”

Joe might have to put down the champagne.

Frank Frangie is the afternoon drive time voice on 92.5 FM sports radio in Jacksonville (something Joe has spent way too much time listening to lately).

Frangie also is the Jaguars’ radio play-by-play man.

Today, Frangie’s show was an ear-popping experience for any Bucs fan tuned in. Frangie said the Jaguars-Liam Coen dance for their vacant head coaching job is not over.

Adam Schefter reported Tuesday that Coen would stay in Tampa as offensive coordinator and turn down his second interview for the head coach gig in Jacksonville scheduled for Wednesday.

Then the Jaguars fired general manager Trent Baalke hours later and resumed pursuing Coen.

“The Jags obviously made a run back at [Coen],” Frangie said. “I think that’s probably widely known in the football world,” Frangie said. “What happened from that point forward, I don’t know. What I do know is at 4:22 p.m. on Thursday, there’s still no announcement [from the Bucs] that Coen has signed [a new contract with Tampa Bay]. …

“I will tell you, [Coen] is torn. I can tell you there’s a lot of things at play here.”

Frangie specifically noted his “sources” are “good,” and he shared very unique tidbits on Coen, such as claiming Coen’s wedding anniversary was Tuesday night or Wednesday.

Frangie also said Seahawks offensive assistant coach Jake Peetz is Coen’s best friend and is eager to be reunited in Jacksonville with Coen. (Frangie even apologized to Peetz on-air in case Frangie crossed a line by making that comment).

Peetz was a scout in Jacksonville for four seasons before moving into an offensive assistant coach role there in 2012. He worked with Coen on the Rams’ staff (2022). They’re the same age and Frangie said Coen likely would bring Peetz with him to Jacksonville as offensive coordinator.

To steal Frangie’s line of thinking, Joe will note it’s 5:35 p.m. and there’s still no official announcement of Coen’s new contract from the Buccaneers.

Perhaps the reason the defensive coaches are bolting is because Bowles is about to get canned so Coen can stay on as HC,

Please Lord Jesus make that happen.

  2. BallHawk75 Says:

Then bring father Dungy back as the DC!!!!

Just imagine that defense with the Coen offense!!!!

    28-27

    FIRE BOWLES NOW!!!!!!!

  3. Durango 95 Says:

Bucs have always made it a point to not announce signings until the time it was actually signed. However, ol Frangie here, loves him some drama.

  4. Pahpahmike Says:

That was a question that I asked on the site earlier today. On another site today Scheftler said that Coen had sign a contract yesterday.
Without a team announcement or something from Coen, it can only ever be speculation whether a contract was signed. Nobody you’re asking on a website has seen the ink on the paper. Lying or withholding the whole truth is part of the NFL culture — offseason, regular season, whatever.–Joe

I ask was there anyone else who had heard that. Also a few minutes ago on ESPN they didn’t mention anything about Coen still being in the running for the JV job. They did mention that JV had several interviews set for tomorrow 1 GM and a couple of HC candidates. Hopefully I will here sometihing solid soon

  5. Anyhony Says:

Isn’t this Frangie a character on Star Trek?

  6. FortMyersDave Says:

Seems strange that this guy on Jax radio is the only one reporting this. Still it might behoove the Glazers and Coen to issue a statement to put this to rest once and for all.

  7. Pahpahmike Says:

Durango 95 I think that’s what it may be drama. I do know that sometimes the Bucs take while to announce change and contracts when there is more than one thing going on. With what looks like several changes on the defense coming maybe this is the reason

  8. Dan b Says:

This guy is causing a lot of trouble just ignore him

  9. FortMyersDave Says:

BallHawk, perhaps Coen said he would stay if there were changes made on the D.

  10. MBo13 Says:

That organization, even with Baalke gone, really has no business hiring a first time HC. Their front office is too unstable starting with Khan. The fact he hired him in the first place after his track record in San Fran and then kept him initially this year says a lot.

  11. Bucsfan1988 Says:

Ian Rapoport reporting that Coen is talking face to face with the Jags here AFTER signing his new contract with the Bucs…

If Coen pulls that crap and bails after Glazers restructured his contract then I’ll lose all respect for this dude….

You don’t pull stuff like that with people that have taken care of you…

  12. Panhandle Buc Says:

Ummmm Adam Schefter just tweeted horrible news – Liam Coen does a reverse and back in Jacksonville to make him highest paid coach!

  13. Fred McNeil Says:

Maybe Coen would rather launch his head coaching career elsewhere. Right now he can get head coach offers every year. Two years trying to salvage Trevor Lawrence on a not so well run Jaguars team would probably ruin his reputation. Still, I don’t blame him for considering it. Look at Todd Bowles. After a trip to Belvue…I mean the Jets, nobody would have ever given him another shot except Ariens. Nobody ever does well in that circus. Although, Todd did have one 10-6 season. Has anybody had even 9 wins since? I wouldn’t consider the Titans or Colts or Raiders either. Those teams will never be functional.

  14. Fred McNeil Says:

Oh, sheet, Panhandle! I hope you’re wrong.

  15. Bucsfan1988 Says:

My message just got hung up in review….

Ian Rapaport posted on X that Coen is back talking with Jags face to face about the head coaching position again….

    WTF???

Bro, you just signed your new contract with the Bucs for your extension with a good raise…..Bucs brass took care of you…..

If Coen bails then my respect for this dude is GONE!

  16. Alstott40 Says:

Shefter is reporting he will take 2nd interview. But I know Cohem won’t take jags job simce Bowles is a master negotiator!!!

  17. Durango 95 Says:

I was critical of radio announcers yesterday But in fairness to these cats they have to go on the air and fill X amount of hours 5 times a week. Not an easy thing to do. Day after day. So they need to “be creative” when it comes to the subject matter. I have no concern on the Coen thing. Just radio host being radio host. Listenership and calls make their world go around.

  18. Fred McNeil Says:

I don’t see it on NFL.

  19. Shake&Baker Says:

I hope he crashes and burns there and never gets another shot as a HC.

  20. WanderingWallflower Says:

What? Why isn’t that wonderful atmosphere in Tampa retaining the talent?

Coaching staffs flee for a few reasons. One would be they believe their job security is at risk because the head coach is on a very hot seat. The Glazera are about to risk burning down the remaining window of opportunity by keeping the cards they’re holding. Well, trying to keep them.

It’s like they’re holding a Jack and not an Ace. It’s hilarious Coen won’t even field their calls today.

  21. Bucsfan1988 Says:

From Schefter’s initial post, Bucs saying they’ve been trying to reach Coen & his representation today but no response.

Schefter then posts that Coen called Bowles and said he wants to move forward with 2nd interview….

Bro, Coen is a SLIME BALL after pulling this…..
No respect for this dude AFTER YOUR CURRENT EMPLOYER WENT OUT ON A LIMB TO TAKE CARE OF YO A$$ WITH AN EXTENSION AND RAISE!!!

  22. pewterplank Says:

Well if he leaves get Jon Gruden. Either as OC or Head Coach.

  23. Bucsfan1988 Says:

You don’t pull crap like that to your boss in the NFL!!

    Reputation should mean everything….

  24. WanderingWallflower Says:

Coen was given cash. Nothing else. No guarantee he’d be next man up. He’s got every right to listen to a sweetened deal from Jax. Don’t blame Coen for mismanagement by Licht & Co.

    Nobodies perfect.

  25. Lol Says:

    lol…

  26. Bucsfan1988 Says:

    Wandering Wallflower, that’s pure BS!!

Bucs offered him an extension and a new salary that will make him the highest paid offensive coordinator in the NFL.

Contract was waiting on him today. The last time they had heard from him was yesterday afternoon After accepting the offer.

Bucs management have been trying to reach him and his reps all day today with no response from the guy. Unknown to them, Coen was secretly meeting with the jags ownership face-to-face today.

ESPN Jenna Laine posted about an hour ago that Coen finally reached out to Todd Bowles…he told Todd what he was doing….

I’m DONE with COEN!!! The Bucs should be too. Tear that new contract up!

If Coen doesn’t get hired by Jags, he’s screwed…

Bucs need to move forward now and find a HIGH CHARACTER offensive coordinator…

    Bucs don’t need slime-ball Coen!!
Baker, the o-line, and the running game know who they are now.

  27. orlbucfan Says:

Coen is going nowhere, but he’s gotta be enjoying himself IF he even bothers with fan blogs.
