Lions To Interview Larry Foote

January 23rd, 2025

Bucs defensive assistant Larry Foote.

It sure smells like the Bucs will have new defensive coaches for the 2025 season.

FOX NFL insider Jordan Schultz reports the Lions will interview Bucs inside linebackers coach Larry Foote for their open defensive coordinator position.

With Kacy Rodgers already gone and apparently with Foote having one foot out the door, that tells Joe there will be multiple new defensive staff members.

And Joe doesn’t think that is unwarranted. When your defense doesn’t force one punt in a playoff game (yes, Joe knows it forced two turnovers on downs) people need to take a serious look at why that was.

Now what Joe wonders is, will the Bucs have Todd Bowles name someone else as defensive coordinator? He hasn’t had one since being named head coach before the 2023 season.

    Get the “foote” outta here!!!!!

  2. Allbuccedup Says:

    If hes still here!!!

  3. Rod Munch Says:

    If Foote, and not Bowles, is the reason that Britt was ever on the field, then good riddance. However the ILB play, when they’ve had anything close to talented players, hasn’t really been an issue on defense.

  4. PSL Bob Says:

    It will suck if they bring in a new defensive staff and Bowles remains DC. We’ve got to get a new scheme for our pass defense.

  5. KnoxvilleBuc Says:

    Interesting and probably for the best long term. Sometimes you need a restart and listening to a different voice may be for the entire defense. Seems like Rex Ryan may get passed up once again in the Head Coaching department. Wonder if he would be interested taking the defense over if Bowels would give up his play calling duties? Probably not a chance but having someone with that level of knowledge would be tremendous.

    I think it’s less scheme and more about the actual play calling, which Bowles hasn’t done in years. We saw it all year, when the Bucs played man and were aggressive, they looked like a totally different defense compared to when they just sat back in the God-awful super soft passive zone.

    As the entire NFL has shifted to zone, it would do Bowles good to be out in front of the trends and revert back to his man-to-man scheme. That alone would massively improve things (and yes, you will get burned, you’ll have awful games where the defense looks terrible, but they won’t passively allow teams to move the ball at will with no resistance).

  7. Allbuccedup Says:

    Usually when a defense stinks they usually can the defensive coordinator I mean that’s what the 49ers and Bengals did. Just saying

  8. Pewter Power Says:

    Please get the job Foote. Unfortunately no one will take his secondary coaches even if they worked for free and those are the coaches that need to go. The co coordinators hires when he came on as coach was dumb I’m glad it’s coming to an end. If he changes the secondary coaches Bucs should go all in for the Super Bowl

  9. BallHawk75 Says:

    Could you imagine any team going for fourth down against those defenses we had in the late 90s to early 2000s?

    It would have been a suicide mission. I truly miss those days.

    If we had any offense back then we might have gone on a KC type run they have now.

    We need to get back to that style of punch you in the mouth rabid defense.

  10. Todd Bowls Says:

    They named the league for him, the National Footeball League.

    Adios Larry! Cyanora Amigo!

  11. It's Corn Says:

    Did they ask Liam Coen whom he wanted as his DC?

  12. SB~LV Says:

    Very interesting…

    Potential Option(s)

    * Linebackers/Run Game Coordinator – Mike Caldwell
    * Assistant Linebackers – Marcus Lewis
    * Cornerbacks – Ricky Manning
    * Safeties – Gerald Alexander
    * Assistant Defensive Backs – Matt Feeney
    * Assistant Defense – Josh Phillips

    2# Defensive coaches
    * Defensive Coordinator – Robert Saleh
    * Defensive line – Aaron Whitecotton
    * Asst. Defensive Line– Mike Rutenberg
    * Linebackers – Jeff Ulbrich
    * Assistant Linebackers – Shaq Wilson
    * Defensive Backs/Safeties – Marquand Manuel
    * Senior Defensive Assistant/cornerbacks – Tony Oden

  14. Truth be Told Says:

    Buh Bye. Our Pass Defense is/was our Achilles heel. LBs never in the right place and the CBs play with a 10 yard cushion. The madness has to stop with our past defense.

  15. StickinUp4Centers Says:

    Does anyone else find it comical that Bucs fans have complained about the defense and want a staff overall, especially after losing to Washington 23-20, only for the defensive coordinator who gave up 45 the following week to Washington to get a promotion to head coach…. and now the Lions are seeking his replacements from the Bucs?

    I’m not defending these assistant coaches but it either shows how different fans and professionals view things, the Bucs had a lack of talent on D and these coaches were admirable in their results, or NFL teams don’t like to gamble on fresh blood.

  16. Pelsbuc61 Says:

    Need Rapone and Ross gone as well.

  17. Jeffs grandpa Says:

    Ulbrich is already the new dc in Atlanta doubts he wants to come here and coach linebackers

  18. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Jeffs grandpa

    Ty for catching that.

  19. JimBobBuc Says:

    Foote has worked with Devin White, KJ Britt, JJ Russell, and SVD. I’m not sure any of those guys improved much under Foote. When LVD retires the Bucs may have the worst ILB room in the league. I hope Licht brings in a quality ILB free agent and drafts another one in rd2.

  20. Pahpahmike Says:

    I want to see how Bowles defense plays next season with him still calling the plays with new defensive staff members before I make any assumptions about his play calling I’ve been thinking for a while that maybe the Bucs need to move or replace at least the DL and CB coaches. I mean when people kept saying the Bucs need an edge rusher or CB and better defensive players, my thoughts were, they have drafted multiple players at Edge and CB and no success. Many showed potential and progress to be studs on the defense only to regress and fade off into the sunsets. I don’t think that’s all play calling, it sounds like position coaches

  21. HC Grover Says:

    Sounds good to me

  22. HC Grover Says:

    This is all interesting but….I am interested in what Brady does in Vegas, Bucs will be same old Bowles Bucs next year. A 50//50 hope for the best at the division to get a playoff game.

  23. Defense Rules Says:

    I’m surprised there’s no scuttlebutt as to WHY Foote & Rodgers are leaving. I mean, ‘unsourced reports’ flourish in the sports world nowadays. SOMEONE must be pointing fingers. Anyone.

  24. IrishTony Says:

    HALLELUJAH send the ol fogies packing!!

  25. IrishTony Says:

    Really when was the last time we “developed” an edge rusher? Uhh like never

  26. IrishTony Says:

    Sirvocea Dennis is a great tackler and excellent in coverage. If LVD comes back we could use an outside backer/edge rusher along with Yiayia and another pass rushing end and the front should be set.

  27. Pahpahmike Says:

    Defense Rules, you know the rules in the NFL, somebody has to take the fall or as they say the escape, goat

  28. Pewter Power Says:

    If you have the 4th worse pass defense in the nfl and secondary coaches are staying this shakeup is pointless

  29. WillieG Says:

    Sure is starting to sound like Bowles was told to make changes or hit the highway. Hopefully, that’s not the case and he decided it was time to make the changes.

  30. Pahpahmike Says:

    If Foote does leave I look for one of Bowles ex coaches to come back. I think the name was Caldwell who went to Jacksonville as the DC a few years ago

  31. Tony Says:

    I’m sure Foote enjoyed watching Ohio St win it this year.😃

  32. Aqualung Says:

    It’s time for the full time DC. It would be ridonkulously good if that happened to be Robert Saleh! Thanks Oneilbuc!

  33. heyjude Says:

    Wow! Good for Larry. Hope he gets the job.

  34. orlbucfan Says:

    Oh can the usual griping you worthless Bucs “fans.” This is a compliment, but I guess you fair weather yo-yos are too dense to see it. Yeah Joe, I’m on the warpath. I hope I can get over to RJS next season (climate change storm season factors in) for one more game. I am so psyched over the potential I am seeing going down with my Bucs. I just wish my Buc Buddies were still alive, too. Go Tampa Bay!! 🙂
