CBS: Jags’ Pursuit Of Liam Coen Isn’t Over (Yet)
January 23rd, 2025If someone told Joe that Bucs fans lit fireworks in the cold of yesterday morning after word got out that Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen was staying, Joe wouldn’t be one bit surprised.
Joe can never remember a Bucs assistant flirting with another team that had almost every Bucs fan on two feet about to freak out.
Oh, there was anxiety and hand-wringing when Mike Smith about about to bolt the Bucs for another job after the 2016 season. Team Glazer also came swooping in and made it worth Smith’s time not to pursue a head coaching gig, just like they did Coen yesterday. (Joe has heard the deal was in the works for days.)
But the near-freakout was nowhere near the level of Bucs fans yesterday.
Thankfully, it all worked out. But did it? Jonathan Jones is of the mind that the Jags will take another run at Coen. Probably with more loot, and maybe with an opportunity to pick his general manager.
That’s because after Coen told Jags owner Shad Con Khan, thanks but no thanks, Khan realized he missed out on both Ben Johnson and Coen because nobody wants to work with Jags general manager Trent Baalke.
That is former Jags general manager Trent Baalke. After Coen rebuffed Khan, then Khan canned Baalke.
Jones of CBS has a hunch Khan will take another run at Coen with Baalke out of the way.
@jjones9: With Baalke out and knowing how interested the franchise has been in Liam Coen, it would not be shocking to see the Jaguars make another run at the Buccaneers offensive coordinator. They make him tell them no twice.
Well, as Joe typed earlier, Coen knows the Jags are a trainwreck of a franchise compared to the Bucs. If Coen plays his cards right, he could be coaching Arch Manning in a year or two somewhere and be set for a decade or longer.

When asked earlier in the year about getting a HC job Coen indicated that’s the plan, but he was having fun here, and was in no hurry. What’s changed? It appears nothing since he signed to stay here . Let’s leave it at that. Jags will really look silly if they get turned down twice. Show some pride, hire someone else already.

When is Cohen going to sign his contract as the Bucs OC? What I mean is what date was he expected to come in to sign it? We will know he’s considering it if he postpones the day. I don’t think he’d do this to the team and fan base at this point.
The Lions OC waited and he got the HC pick of the litter. If Coen bets on himself he could do the same next year. Hopefully it’s taking over HC duties from Bowles after a SB victory.

I have to disagree with you Stan. The Bears job is not the pick of the litter. As someone who grew up near Chicago, that organization has been an absolute mess for decades and I’ve seen nothing to show it’s any better. They selected head case, paints his fingernails Caleb Williams over Jayden Daniels.

Happy to have our OC back
January 23rd, 2025 at 5:01 am
Hodad asked: “What Changed?”. IMHO, nothing really except the Jags fired their GM. Now if the GM was the major drawback, would not other candidates come forward? There are coordinators with the Bills and Eagles who the Jags might want to talk to as well as the Raiders and Cowboys. Anyhow, Jon Jones is probably just throwing stuff on the wall for clicks, he probably heard about the meltdown that play by play guy had up in Jagland yesterday after everything hit the fan up in the offices of the dumpster fire also known as the Jaguars..
Stanglassman: I do not think it matters if Coen has signed the new contract or not. I think he can interview and leave if he is offered a promotion, the Bucs can only block requests for lateral move interviews like if the Saints called and asked if they could talk to him about their OC position.
January 23rd, 2025 at 5:42 am
Jags made a critical error but now have to move forward. McCarthy is just sitting there waiting to provide some stability.
January 23rd, 2025 at 5:52 am
Don’t do it, Liam. You’ll be miserable and get canned in two years.
January 23rd, 2025 at 5:53 am
Coen is here and here is where he is going to stay. For now.
January 23rd, 2025 at 6:13 am
Fortmyersdave, great point I have the same opinion. If the GM was the big problem, now he’s gone there are a stack of candidates out there that might interested now. Some with a bit more experience than Coen. One other thing is, if the GM was the only thing keeping Coen from taking the job, why didn’t that come up right after the first interview between Coen and Jags As said , what changed? Nothing but the Jags fired the GM
January 23rd, 2025 at 6:24 am
It’s over, Coen and his family are staying here.
OHBucFan – Good call about McCarthy. I had forgotten about him. May be a good match for the Jags too. Depending on who they get as GM too. A lot going on there.
January 23rd, 2025 at 6:32 am
Liam Coen would lose his credibility if he took the Jags job.
Down the road, legitimate owners and GMs would look at that and possibly shy away from even considering him.
In a sense, Liam would stand to lose the most.
Sure, it would hurt the Bucs temporarily if he did an about face. But the team and the franchise would carry on from the Glazers down to the players and all the other folks that make the operation work on a daily basis.
But, Liam would do the most damage to his own street cred if he did an about face.
Fortunately, I don’t think he’s the kind of person who would do that.
Glad he’s staying! 🙂
January 23rd, 2025 at 6:35 am
Oh let’s not stir up the masses again Joe. This issue is dead.
January 23rd, 2025 at 7:25 am
Go Bucs keep your OC F THE JAGS
January 23rd, 2025 at 7:40 am
I think we forget that the reason why the Bucks offense was so good as a man named Mike Evans. Baker also was phenomenal Yes, Liam is amazing and a great addition to the team and I’m thrilled he’s back, but let’s not forget who executes the plays. It’s the players I’m more worried about replacing Mike Evans in 2 to 3 years since he’s getting a little bit older than I am about the offensive coordinator

Why would a first time HC canidate, after 1 year of actually being a NFL OC, calling and designing plays for a NFL team. Want to go to another NFL franchise, and work with a lesser than GM? Why would a 1st time OC who had much success with the team and GM that gave him his OC opportunity to flex his skills. Turn away from that team and GM?
For what?
More cash?
A new title of HC, more responsibilities as HC, more pressure to fill both OC&DC&HC duties after.only being a NFL OC for one season, Why not learn and grow your OC skills, learn how to run D and O and ST before being hired into that position of which we have read from Coen’s own words he wants to stay in Tampa to learn and expand his skill sets as OC and other things.
Glad we have Coen back, glad him and Bowles are close and share a desire to be great, to leave a legacy, to build a dominant NFL franchise for the long haul. Yeah the JJoes can speculate untill the cows come home. But Coen has already stated that yes a HC position is a dream, but Coen also knows he needs to learn how to be a successful HC before he gets that opportunity. I am Glad Coen decided to stay in Tampa.
GO!!!!!BUCS!!!!!

Let Arch play a full season of college ball before you place him in the Hall of Fame!
January 23rd, 2025 at 8:08 am
4 1st round draft picks, 4 2nd round draft picks, 4 3rd round draft picks, and cash. more than what we paid for gruden and i would consider it.
January 23rd, 2025 at 8:36 am
An owner is not going to let a 39 year old OC with no HC experience dictate the GM.
January 23rd, 2025 at 8:38 am
Bucsguy. Williams over Daniels. Hindsight is 20/20 lol

“”Go Bucs keep your OC F THE JAGS””
Hahahaha my sentiments exactly.

I so cold I KNOW WHAT A PACKER FAN FEELS LIKE.
January 23rd, 2025 at 9:47 am
Joe, Coen’s a class guy and won’t leave this cycle. End of story.
On to free agency and assistant coaches….
January 23rd, 2025 at 10:08 am
Maybe they will go after Leftwich. Apparently he was a front runner a few years back but didn’t take the job because he requested that Baalke be fired first before he would take the job. Leftwich won the Superbowl last year….on his Madden game.
January 23rd, 2025 at 10:19 am
only other time I can remember is when Kiffin was rumored to be going to be HC of the 49ers… Glazers stepped up and did the right thing then too.
January 23rd, 2025 at 10:30 am
That’s psycho boy/girlfriend stocker stuff.
January 23rd, 2025 at 10:51 am
Most of us hope he stays, but if he’s basically offered full control, like the deal Lovie got to come to the Bucs, hard to say no – except it’s the Jags.
How sweet to watch the Jags get rebuffed by Liam twice. Please stay, Liam.
January 23rd, 2025 at 12:05 pm
On behalf of old dudes everywhere…LMAO I gotta ask about three guys with GREAT reputations and success.
ONE of them at least is desperate to get back and I honestly know little about the other two.
Bill Belichik has made it obvious he WANTS to coach so badly he settled for the UNC gig in case he struck out with his boy in Vegas and everywhere else. BUT
BB has an out that would only cost him 1 million. Chump change. Is BB’s NFL HC career over?
Pete Carroll has been in the Las Vegas rumor mill, don’t know how much to pay attention to “rumors” and unsourced reports!
I haven’t heard Nick Saban’s name other than he was recently interviewed and said he hasn’t lost all desire to coach but never again in College with their version of FA the dreaded “Transfer Portal”
So each of these guys are ONLY 4 years younger than me!!! Still Im not an ageist, I swim with men and women in their 80’s. BB doesn’t look exactly fit or in shape, but Pete Carroll and Saban appear to still be quite fit.
Any chance for these old dudes?

@Vanessa Anne
“Liam Coen would lose his credibility if he took the Jags job.”
Amen sister!! Even Rod agrees with us on that one. Yesterday during rumor time Rod pointed out that since it’s an HC position Coen could legally wiggle out with no cost.
When I pointed out…well some cost..to his reputation, his word, his character pretty much what you covered V.A.

[Guess who else reported that Jags were going to make a second run at Coen? CBS. Jonathan Jones. You think CBS has “clickbait” when their top news guy reports it? If so, maybe you shouldn’t read this site? News and quotes trigger you too much. — Joe]
January 23rd, 2025 at 1:20 pm
Now that he has signed a new contract, wouldn’t is be tampering?
January 23rd, 2025 at 2:13 pm
Yeah, Jags don’t have a chance lol
