Todd Bowles Speculation Can Finally End
January 22nd, 2025With Bucs offensive playcaller Liam Coen officially returning for the 2025 season, perhaps the rabid and divisive speculation of Todd Bowles getting fired this month will be put to bed.
Joe was impressed by how many fans and media seemingly were trying to will Bowles off the plank. Man, these folks are passionate. It even reached a new level yesterday.
Joe applauds the enthusiasm, but Bowles getting launched was not in the cards, as Joe was writing here for the past few weeks and stating on the Ira Kaufman Podcast.
Still, Joe expects some will continue the drumbeat for Bowles’ head before the new league year begins.
Bowles, however, clearly enters the 2025 season on a hot seat in the minds of nearly every Bucs fan, and that likely includes the folks signing the checks. Win more or go home.
Joe wonders if it might be weird for Bowles knowing Coen, now his potential 2026 replacement and the fans’ new favorite son, is his day-to-day dance partner.

Get rid of mediocrity.
January 22nd, 2025 at 11:01 am
Bucs now need to push Bowles to hire a DC
January 22nd, 2025 at 11:02 am
Coen staying is huge. This means he doesn’t go to Jax and start poaching his Bucs assistance. I’m still in the “get rid of Bowles camp” His Jets and Bucs records scream average. With this offense – cut bait with Bowles.
January 22nd, 2025 at 11:03 am
Glazers need to insist on Bowles hiring a DC AND a Time Out coach
January 22nd, 2025 at 11:04 am
We just want to win and Bowles will never take us where we want to go. Most of us can see that clearly. Its sad that we have to waste another year before some figure it out.
January 22nd, 2025 at 11:04 am
Pay Coen’s assistants too.
January 22nd, 2025 at 11:05 am
But will it with this fan base? Probably not
January 22nd, 2025 at 11:05 am
The money the Glaziers put up is to keep our future head coach not just our current offensive coordinator.
January 22nd, 2025 at 11:09 am
The box don’t need to worry about hiring a DC…. They need to worry about acquiring actual talent on defense. Way too many holes on that side of the ball
January 22nd, 2025 at 11:09 am
Tbbucs3 would be nice if ppl that like to be mediocre would leave too. Please leave.
January 22nd, 2025 at 11:10 am
Bowles isn’t the problem. The problem is after tasting success, Bucs fan want more of it. It’s now a fan base with a SB or bust mindset.
January 22nd, 2025 at 11:13 am
“His Jets and Bucs records scream average.”
Really? You can loathe Todd but you don’t need to post BS stats.
He is the ONLY coach in the past DECADE to win 10 games with NEPO baby Woody Johnsons franchise. That’s average?
He is one of ONLY FOUR winning coaches in Buc’s HISTORY which includes 13 coaches. He’s in 3rd place edging out Chucky who is in 4th and the only other Buc coach to post a winning record.
Soooo 3rd best record in BUC’S HISTORY! Average? Well since everybody likes to figure out ways to demean ANY accomplishment or success Bowles may have had will wish to respond just as they do by diminishing his 3 consecutive Division titles…oh but he’s ONLY winning because the Division sucks! So here you go guys I’ll beat you to the demeaning punch. The ONLY reason Todd is the 3rd most winningest coach in Bucs history is because the Bucs suck! How’s that work for you?
January 22nd, 2025 at 11:14 am
It’s not even about wins and losses with me all that much. A majority of the time I wouldn’t even consider Bowles a competent coach. He is below average at many things HC’s are suppose to do. Almost always making some kind of in game mistakes, and you can also question a lot of his out of game management as well. If he wore to even show improvements in the typical coaching areas I would be willing to calm down but so far he’s been the same coach all 3 years. I just dont see anything that The ReTodd Cult is seeing.
January 22nd, 2025 at 11:14 am
Oops Chucky along with Todd and obviously BA and Tony are the ONLY winning coaches the franchise has known.
January 22nd, 2025 at 11:15 am
It’s now a fan base with a SB or bust mindset.
—
A fan base that expects to win and dominate is a problem? Wow. Talk about loving mediocrity. LMAO
January 22nd, 2025 at 11:15 am
He probably does get more hate than he deserves, but he’s done enough to show he’s hindering instead of helping.
-clock management is poor, very poor
-No DC highlights him as the defensive guy, which has gotten progressively worse since he’s taken over as HC
– A small thing that I noticed during the season that really highlighted a lack of coaching ability to me was when he said one of our linebackers wasn’t up to speed with the defense (his defense) and had been on the squad for 3 YEARS.
January 22nd, 2025 at 11:15 am
Bucs fan should either hop on board with Todd Bowles for this season or get off…. It’s sad going into the off-season with lots of fans rooting for the coach to be fired. Embarrassing actually.
I can’t imagine rooting for your coach to be fired after three playoff appearances in a row
January 22nd, 2025 at 11:17 am
Great news keeping Liam. Can’t underestimate that Liam really likes Bowles and that figuring into his decision. Baker really likes and respects Bowles too. Wonder where Baker and Liam would be without Bowles? Certainly not in Tampa. Licht, Bowles, Coen and Baker are the 4 cornerstones of this organization as decided by Licht and the Glazers. And as long as they keep getting better as a team every year-which they are-those cornerstones will remain in place.
January 22nd, 2025 at 11:18 am
If Bowles does poorly And doesn’t make the playoffs next season, Then he deserves to be on the hot seat and potentially fired.
But Bucs fans are just gonna keep yammering on with the same tired topic all off-season with the same fire Todd Bowles topic.
How about let’s stop beating a dead horse and see what the results are in 2025.
January 22nd, 2025 at 11:19 am
Could be wrong, but pretty sure his clock management was a large contributer of all of those playoff losses.
January 22nd, 2025 at 11:19 am
FIX THE EFFIN DEFENSE AND WE CAN WIN A SUPERBOWL. The offense is set for years with Coen back. Cmon guys, we just won the off-season and it’s still January
January 22nd, 2025 at 11:20 am
Todd’s off season is spent developing excuses for mediocrity.
January 22nd, 2025 at 11:21 am
I don’t think Liam or Todd will have a crappy relationship. They both have something to prove but they’ll help each other. If the secondary blows again it will be on Todd. Same with the offense. It’s on Liam.
January 22nd, 2025 at 11:21 am
Embarrassing? Almost as embarrassing as being a fan boy of a mediocre coach.
January 22nd, 2025 at 11:23 am
You are either a part of the problem or the solution…
Coen is the solution….
Bowels the problem…. his defense bottom of the barrel…
Coen will surely have their offense much improved in their 2nd season…
BUT his offense having to make up for the defense lack of existence will be a hindrance…
Get a quality DC and upgrade the defense to actually compliment the offense instead of hurt them!
January 22nd, 2025 at 11:23 am
Thank you Coach Bowles for building such a great culture that someone is willing to delay his dream of being a head coach. Not only do players love Coach Bowles, but so do his coaches. Thanks for being a true leader of men.
January 22nd, 2025 at 11:24 am
@ stpetebucsfan: 53-65… that record may even scream a little below average. Maybe I was too generous in my original post.
January 22nd, 2025 at 11:27 am
Bowles is 100% the problem. He has one of the worst defenses in the NFL and does a very poor job with clock management and game day decisions. With all that being said it is a great day for the Bucs to keep Liam Coen.
January 22nd, 2025 at 11:27 am
Hope they signed a beast of a defensive end to play opposite yaya. It will change the defense as much as coen changed the offense.
January 22nd, 2025 at 11:29 am
“Joe wonders if it might be weird for Bowles knowing Coen, now his potential 2026 replacement and the fans’ new favorite son, is his day-to-day dance partner.”
Man I hope not. Hopefully he is thinking about winning a SB and rebuilding an elite defense and scheme that is adequate at stopping the pass in 2025.
Defense still wins championships.
Texans beat the Chargers with defense. Rams defense came alive towards the end of the year as well which is why they had success.
All the teams outside of Washington still alive in the playoffs have great defenses, and even then Washington Defense has been making plays / doing decent when it counts.
January 22nd, 2025 at 11:29 am
Tbbucs3 – I disagree. We have been in Todd Bowles defense since 2019. He basically hand-picked this unit. He played a huge role in our Super Bowl win but he also cost us one with that bad all-out blitz against the rams. But more than the unit is in decline and it was historically bad over the last two seasons. His defenses have allowed more 500 yard games than anyone else’s unit. Injuries happen but guess what they happened for Coen as well losing Godwin, Evans, our RT, our TE and we still didn’t miss a beat.
I think we need a DC or at least shake up the assistants in the D to get fresh eyes on things and new ideas around the scheme.
Where I do agree is we also need to get some real edge rushers we have been plagued since JPP And Barrett left.
January 22nd, 2025 at 11:29 am
If you would block them from posting like you do others about issues it wouldn’t be such an issue hint hint you could control it
January 22nd, 2025 at 11:30 am
St Pete, great information!! I can only hope Todd Bowles got a pay increase as well ?? That only makes sense right ?
Go Bucs 2025 !!
January 22nd, 2025 at 11:30 am
Agreed Davenport. It won’t happen but our biggest coaching issue remains… Bowles wearing 2 hats.
January 22nd, 2025 at 11:32 am
The more the few people with tender skin whine about some dead horse being beaten, the more beatings there will be. It’s fun to trigger the simples.
Now the incoming full time DC and QCC need to be pursued, secured, and empowered. Then Bowles can finally focus on being a true, unencumbered Head Coach, and focus on the details he’s been missing. Let’s face it – 6 of the 8 Bucs losses this past season including the sad playoff game against the Redskins, were due to self inflicted wounds to the face. Bucs beating Bucs. Sloppiness. Lack of discipline. Things that a well coached team doesn’t do.
Time to fix that! LFG!
January 22nd, 2025 at 11:32 am
Bowles needs to figure out how to win those prime time games.
I can’t understand how we lost all of those.
January 22nd, 2025 at 11:35 am
Hello? Remember The Raheem situation? Coen as HC still in play.
January 22nd, 2025 at 11:35 am
LT. Dan
Do you understand context? Its one thing for HC’s to have won in Pittsburgh with perhaps the best ownership in the league, or SF. It’s another thing to win in NYC which ONLY Todd has done in the past DECADE!
Now for some perspective. Life is graded on the curve. IE you can’t be expected to TOTALLY outperform everybody else. Todd HAS outperformed all but TWO of the Buc’s head coaches.
Don’t worry Dan. Nobody is going to accuse of being to generous!!! Perhaps lacking in reality and context but generous…that’s a hoot.
January 22nd, 2025 at 11:35 am
Disagree with Bowles being on the hot seat next season Joe. It’s the final year of his deal, and I haven’t seen where the team has picked up his 5th year option? They gave Liam a new deal, not Bowles. The hand writing is on the wall, next season then Todd’s contract is over.
January 22nd, 2025 at 11:35 am
Turn out the lights. It will be good ole ,500 Bowles again. He will keep it close to the end as usual. The sideline stiff is baaaack.

January 22nd, 2025 at 11:41 am
Three proven edge rushers available in free agency, so FREAKING sign one.
January 22nd, 2025 at 11:41 am
@ catturd::Why wouldn’t you want your team to have a SB or bust mentality sounds like you have a mediocre Bowel’s mentality to me.
January 22nd, 2025 at 11:41 am
If Bowles would hire a legit DC, all the heat would at least calm down until the fans could see how the defense performs with a standalone coordinator. Head Coaches who double as play callers are great if you are Andy Reid, but that type of success is rare. Hiring competent coordinators who can gameplan and call plays effectively is one of the most important roles of being a head coach. Bowles needs to find the self confidence to hire well and manage the team as an on field CEO.
January 22nd, 2025 at 11:41 am
Look, I criticize Todd Bowles as much as anyone, and his time management is often maddening. But—and this is a HUGE but—the defense was severely lacking in talent and had injuries from the very beginning of the year. The previous season wasn’t nearly as bad, if I remember correctly, and during the Brady years, the defense was generally solid, aside from that one boneheaded play in the middle to Kupp. If I recall, he had a player (AWJ) covering him, but the play wasn’t made. So, is that a bad call on Bowles, or was it him trusting his players to make a play? Since then, he’s taken a more conservative approach because, frankly, he might have realized that his players couldn’t execute man-to-man as effectively, and he doesn’t have the talent to run the same system. He’s said himself that it has to be adjusted every few years.
Anyway, I’ve ranted enough. It’s pointless—today is a day to
CELEBRATE! CELEBRATE! CELEBRATE!
Coen will remain with the offense that so many of us feel carried the team for at least one more year. If the team drafts all defense and there’s no improvement, I’m sure Coen will be promoted, and the franchise will move forward from there. Personally, I don’t care who the coach is or who the players are—they all come and go. I’m a Buccaneers fan, and I want Super Bowls! That’s it. From 2006 to 2017, we didn’t have that, and as a Bucs fan, it was tough. The offense should get even better, and with a slightly improved defense, I could see a Super Bowl run—even with Bowles as coach. Frankly, who cares who the coach is as long as there WININNING!!!

Todd Bowles Speculation Can Finally End
January 22nd, 2025
That’s a funny headline. It’s NEVER going to end for some here because they’ve made it personal.
IF the Bucs win the SB next year credit will go to everybody but Bowles with “some” posters here.
I think DR has it right. About 25% hate Bowles, 25% admire him and 50% are somewhere in the middle. That leaves 25% of the numbnalls who will NEVER concede regardless of record or success.
I can see it already. Baker Mayfield completes a TD bomb to Jalen McMillan to pull out a come from behind Super Bowl win. Next day…if Todd’s D hadnt been so bad the Bucs would have won convincingly!!
January 22nd, 2025 at 11:49 am
Don’t forget Arians retired in March so he could give Bowles the job. That late in the year the bucs didn’t not have to go thru the interview process. Just a thought!!!!
January 22nd, 2025 at 11:51 am
Bowles is very smart to be onboard with Coen staying with the Buccaneers. It will put him in better graces with a certain fan segment and solidifies his future job in the Buccaneers front office! Thank you Todd. Now let’s go forward together! Go Bucs!
January 22nd, 2025 at 11:53 am
Accusing people of making it personal while he calls everyone racist who he doesnt agree with. LMAO Comical.
January 22nd, 2025 at 11:55 am
Come on get happy! A 2nd season with Coen will be even better, especially for our players. So happy to have Bowles as HC for another year too. The players respect him so much. Exciting to not have major changes for once. Go Bucs!
January 22nd, 2025 at 12:00 pm
It is what it is. I’m not saying Coen is a good head coach but he does have a good offense. No denying Todd Bowles is a bad coach. He’s doing the exact same defense he’s done since he got here and he’s just a dinosaur now. Going all in this year for a coach with a sorry track record of pass defense means stop drafting rookie corners and go get a top notch free agent corner and edge rusher.
January 22nd, 2025 at 12:07 pm
Say what you want to about some of the decision-making by Bowles, at times, but the head coach had a massive influence on Coen staying, and fans should appreciate that.
Not only did Bowles want him back, but this move also indicates that the team could be setting Coen up for something even bigger. In the near future, Bowles may be able to move into a front office role and thus hand his gig over to Coen as the team’s next head coach.
January 22nd, 2025 at 12:10 pm
Great news now let’s get to the task at hand and hire a dc…Todd can spend the off season practicing to look important on the sideline during his lame duck final season.
January 22nd, 2025 at 12:13 pm
Still blaming coach for the playoff loss?
It was Baker and fumble simple
January 22nd, 2025 at 12:14 pm

January 22nd, 2025 at 12:24 pm
Licht lauded Coaching stability, and today we secured it.
Load the Defense
January 22nd, 2025 at 12:26 pm
Time to move on to speculation about position coaches and free agency.
The Bucs need to reward Coen’s staff.
Bowles needs to look really hard at his pass defense and make changes. Start with his old friends on staff, is he willing to bring in new assistants and fix the edge rush and secondary play? Is Bowles willing to simplify his defense enough that guys with 3 years on the roster can step in and play? Will he let Licht bring in defenders from other teams at final roster cuts that Bowles will use?
I hope Licht picks up a starting ILB and Edge in FA but I don’t know if we have the money for that. Start by getting rid of JTS, Britt, Newman, and Shepard
January 22nd, 2025 at 12:27 pm
Not a Todd “zealot” just someone who suggests farness. Let’s see how Coach Bowles does with a talent infusion. Doesn’t matter who coaches this defense it lacks talent. From a talent point of view it is substandard. Here is why: 1) not enough overall defense speed; 2) poor tacklers; 3) lack of EDGE pressure; 4) injuries played some role particularly Dennis and Winfield Jr. Hopefully, getting these 2 healthy improves defense by at least 20% next year. Have to hit a home run with a splashy EDGE trade for draft picks in 2025.

“Accusing people of making it personal while he calls everyone racist who he doesnt agree with. LMAO Comical.”
Wow Couch do you realize gross exaggeration doesn’t look good?
I do not call anybody a racist for simply disagreeing with me. I disagree with many here and do so amiably and even when it seems rough as with Rod Munch I always still respect him, and Rod hasn’t posted racist memes as far as I’ve read.
Here’s your mistake Couch.
I have stated that bringing up DEI, Rooney rules as the reason for Todd retaining his job is by definition RACIST!
IF you disagree with that simply explain to me how it is not and I’ll read it.
Meanwhile until somebody, anybody here can convince me it’s not racist I’m going to call those who do it racist! If the shoe fits wear it, racist! It’s not an ACCUSATION it’s an observation. Tell me where I’m wrong and I’ll correct it.
BTW I apologize to the vast majority of this group who are NOT racists.
The racists here know who they are and post accordingly and again thankfully are in a very small minority.

January 22nd, 2025 at 12:36 pm
For those fellow professionals in the workplace out there, it is possible Coen took that initial interview in Jacksonville, with absolutely no interest in that specific head coaching position, for one of two reasons:
1) He simply wanted the experience of an NFL head coaching interview.
2) He knew that if he could draw significant interest from the Jaguars it would be reported and then the Glazers would have to give him a big, fat raise to stay in Tampa or face a revolt from the fans. He may very well have been promised the head job once Bowels goes.
January 22nd, 2025 at 12:57 pm
That weirdness can go away if Todd’s defense performs well
January 22nd, 2025 at 1:09 pm

Winning & raising expectations are not a bad problem to have.
It just is what it is…
January 22nd, 2025 at 1:16 pm
In a results driven enterprise, results actually matter.
Winning the NFC South is not a credible accomplishment.
Without Coen we wouldn’t have won the division at all.
Can the same be said for Bowles? Absolutely not.
We won in spite of his bumblings.
His replacement has been signed and needs to be promoted immediately.
January 22nd, 2025 at 1:33 pm
If Todd is staying, the Bucs MUST sign a DC that understands today’s NFL.
Tood is stuck in 2002 Cover 2 and thinks he is being smart dropping his best pass rushers into coverage. (YaYa should never be in coverage!)
January 22nd, 2025 at 1:37 pm
Easier schedule. No excuses. 12 wins and NFC title game appearance is the minimum in my book. If they don’t make it, it means the D is still a mess. Winfield’s health could matter a lot though.
January 22nd, 2025 at 2:11 pm

Let’s look at this Bucs are picking at #19 and if Licht stays consistent with what he has decided to do the past few years U are making a ultimatum that those rookie picks MUST be the best in the draft so, right out the gate, they can improve the Bucs defense to the level of dominating the NFC!! If they can’t( cause we know Licht doesn’t like spending top money on the best FAs in the league) then Todd Bowles is the one that should be fired and Jason Licht deserves a raise!
yeahhh at least you ridiculous people are consistent
January 22nd, 2025 at 2:31 pm
The Eagles Defense was bottom of the barrel earlier this year. They finished with one of the best Ds in the league. A lot changes over the course of a 17 game season on both sides of the ball.
Our defense was significantly better in ppg after the bye. I’ve waited for the Todd can’t coach crowd to tell me whos defense allowed less points than Todd’s in the last half of the season… Still waiting. 🤷🏼
The offense was inconsistent and absolutely contributed to our losses, and ended the season mistake prone and generally looking like poop. Baker and others, but especially Baker, absolutely bailed Liam out in a number of games when play calls were suspect and we faced repeated 3rd and longs.
So, according to some of you, coaching is the reason for all mistakes and issues. BUT, Liam isn’t responsible for offensive penalties and bone head mistakes that haunted us up til the end ?
Fault = All Todd
Credit = Never todd
??
Ok, have fun. You’ll change NOTHING, ZERO, NADA.
Your delusions of self importance will keep you from accepting that tho, so we’ll see you next year when you will still be trolling the fans here, and thinking you can petition the Bucs to do what you football geniuses think should be done. 🤣
January 22nd, 2025 at 2:35 pm
We won the division 3 times with 3 different OCs. The coach was the constant.
January 22nd, 2025 at 2:49 pm
GoneGator: The Bucs offense was 4th in the NFL in ppg (29.5) defense was 16th in ppg allowed (22.6). Are you sure your post is truthful, knowing these facts?
January 22nd, 2025 at 3:10 pm
I’m sure that we allowed 17.5 ppg after the bye.
I asked those who rail on Todd to tell me who was better, several times, and heard back zip/crickets/silence from those who would like to see Todd fired pronto, period.
But to directly answer your question, yes I’m sure my post is “truthful”.
Opinionated certainly but truthful.
Which part/s would you consider not “truthful” ? Please feel free to correct me if there are specific, untrue comments in my post.

I’m not nearly as down on Bowles as other people, mainly because he’s said his scheme needs to change every 2-3 years, which means we should be done with the God-awful zone defense phase.
But, with that said, just cherry picking stats is pretty ridiculous. After the bye the Bucs faced how many starting QBs? I believe the answer was one – and that was Hebert who was playing on a bad ankle.
I’m just not a fan of people talking about the Bucs being ‘hot’ down the stretch vs a bunch of bad teams, as if that doesn’t matter. At the same time, you can only play who is on the schedule, so it’s not a knock, but it’s also worth putting numbers in context.
Much more impressive is only giving up 16 points vs the Redskins and having a huge 4th quarter goal line stand and giving the ball back to the offense with a chance to put the game away. The defense played a hell of a game vs an elite offense and they’re not the reason the Bucs lost that game. That’s by far the biggest pro for Todd – and if Baker doesn’t lose that game, they’re going to Philly and going to win as Todd has Hurts number and would have made him look terrible, and everyone would be talking about how great Bowles is in big games.

^^^^^^^^^^
The offense averaged 31.8 ppg after the bye, 29.5 for the year. That seems pretty consistent and SHOULD’VE been enough to win most games. You don’t seem to like facts, though.
January 22nd, 2025 at 4:44 pm
Joe in Michigan
The ONLY fact you stated was The offense averaged 31.8 ppg after the bye, 29.5 for the year. I like facts! Great stat for fantasy football or something but it doesn’t prove anything. Averages are not some holy grail stat. Games are played one at a time.
I could do a game by game breakdown of games and plays that to a reasonable, logical person would show the offensive issues that cost us, and contributed to our losses in many cases, games but we all know you and the crew, that cant get past simple minded narratives, wouldn’t be swayed.
Go back and watch the San Fran game, or 1st Panthers game, Raiders, Cowboys, Saints, Commanders games and tell me the offense was a well oiled machine and didn’t look like poo for much of those games. If you can watch those games and tell me you honestly don’t think the defense played a big part in our success and the offense didn’t poop themselves on a number of occasions then I don’t know what else I can do to help you.
And still the question remains unanswered – Who’s defense played better (ppg) over the last half of the season than ours? Surely somebody? Genuinely curious.
January 22nd, 2025 at 10:44 pm
Nobody with half a brain expected bowles to actually get fired. We just want him fired. Once another team in the south gets it’s head out of its ass and goes over .500 and the Bucs miss the playoffs, then bowles gets fired. He’s a slightly below average coach. Good enough to hang around. Not exactly great in an instant gratification sport. I’ve seen enough, as of two years ago

GoneGator: I’m happy that you’ve found somebody to blame for everything that’s went wrong in your life: The Bucs offense, of all things. 🙄😂🙄😂🙄😂

Players always love pushover coaches that want to be their buddy and not their leader. This team is very undisciplined and the result is allot of unnecessary penalties. That is s coaching issue that has to be resolved along with the defense. I am not saying Bowles should be gone I am saying that is something he has to fix.
