How Much Of A Hit Will Bucs Take If Liam Coen Bolts?
January 22nd, 2025It is the NFL. Good coaches come. Good coaches go. Sometimes quicker than players.
Joe has a bottle of Bulleit Frontier Whiskey at the ready today and the rest of the week in case word comes that offensive coordinator Liam Coen is gone.
Joe doesn’t know how much that would set back the Bucs. But it is clear that it will to some degree.
Let’s be real: If not for Coen’s high-powered offense, the Bucs don’t win the division and they don’t make the playoffs.
If Coen goes to Jacksonville as head coach, it’s a good bet offensive line coach Kevin Carberry goes with him under the title of offensive coordinator (even though Coen technically would be the OC), which comes with a raise and some job security.
What Carberry did with the Bucs’ offensive line is every bit as impressive as what Coen did with the entire offense.
If Coen leaves, would Baker Mayfield have a third consecutive career year with the Bucs? How long would Mike Evans want to stick around if Coen leaves? Would Coen’s departure scare away Chris Godwin?
Without Coen, would Bucky Irving have anywhere close to the same year in 2025 as he had in his rookie season?
Joe has a gut feeling that if Coen leaves, the 2025 season will see the Bucs take a step back. Maybe more.
The shame of a Coen departure would be great, Joe believes, because the offense wouldn’t get a chance to improve with the whole group having a full season of Coen’s offense under their belts and ready to reach greater heights as the offense progresses.
If Coen leaves, this is gonna hurt.

January 22nd, 2025 at 5:03 am
He took our rushing attack from dead last to top 5.
But bums like Joe wanna keep the guy that has an awful playoff record, horrendous game management and time out issues and has not been fixed from the Jets, and he’s keeping his god awful defensive staff in tact.
I fully expect Joe will be eating his words next season and will be calling for Bowles job by midseason because shocker offensive coordinators and schemes changing every year does not make teams more successful.
Continuity makes teams successful and the fact that this trash head coach is in year 6 of his defensive scheme and the defense gets worse every year but we have to keep him why? Because he won in the worst division in the NFL.
Stupid, Bucs fans are going to regret losing Liam, mark my words. Todd Bowles will be fired next season but it will be called a retirement to save face and the Bucs when they had Liam Coen in the building will be looking for a new head coach.
Absolute embarrassment of a franchise but no we have to brag about winning the worst division in football and then getting embarrassed in primetime every season(Bowels was 0-5 in Primetime this year) and getting bounced in the playoffs.
Todd Bowles is not winning this team a superbowl as a head coach. He is what he is a barely .500 head coach.
January 22nd, 2025 at 5:05 am
“Joe has a gut feeling that if Coen leaves, the 2025 season will see the Bucs take a step back. Maybe more.”
You’re such a clown Joe I swear, just last week you were telling Bucs fans that we had to get over it that Bowles was staying and now this. You contradict yourself daily and it’s truly embarrassing.
I’m glad you realize with Liam Coen gone, Bowles won’t be able to have his ass carried to the playoffs and his ass will “retire” at the end of 2025 instead of being what he should be, fired.
January 22nd, 2025 at 5:23 am
You guys were trying so hard to be the opposite of Pewter Report, now one of you is finally coming to your senses, I assume Steve.
January 22nd, 2025 at 5:42 am
Promote Carberry, or Grizzard to O.C.. Give the offensive coaches promotions, and pay raises. We can lose the playcaller, but not the playbook. Don’t let Coen take a good staff with him. This offense works, the players know it, Baker thrives in it. What the Bucs should do is give Bowles a title, pay raise, and let Coen take over. Bowles is on the final year of his contract, the team has a 5th year option. Meaning he’s good as gone anyway, why wait?

How Much Of A Hit Will Bucs Take If Todd Bowles Bolts?
January 22nd, 2025 at 6:01 am
Just have the new OC watch game tape, and do the same plays as Cohen. We have a blueprint now
January 22nd, 2025 at 6:18 am
Cohen did a great job with the offense, the infusion of better talent on the O line and at RB are also factors in his revamped offense being so successful. That said, if he does take the the HC job at JAX,I believe we still have the talent to have a great offense if we can stay healthy. Hope he stays, but the rapid progression of new and innovative OC’s is a new trend in today’s NFL.
January 22nd, 2025 at 6:19 am
My thoughts are maybe and just maybe, if the Bucs give Coen a big raise he may stick around 1 more year. Besides getting a big play raise, it’s gonna be a stressful move to HC in Jacksonville. Does the QB and players in JV fit Coens offense. Pretty sure he has or will take a look at that before excepting the job. Organizational wise I hear JV is not very good at this time. The good I see in Tampa for Coen is, Licht and Bowles have put together a damn good program in and also a young and pretty good roster there. Coen can go to JV for the money more stress and no stability or stay in Tampa another year, solidify his resume, and possibly be the Bucs next HC with all that young talent and a strong familiarity with the team and organization. Now that I’ve said that. Hope you stay Coen
January 22nd, 2025 at 6:20 am
Not worried. Bowles is a freaking genius and he will hire another offensive guru for OC. Eleven wins next year and finally 17-0 in 2031. Good times ahead.
January 22nd, 2025 at 6:39 am
Joe, you write countless articles cheerleading how great Bowles and how he had won 3 straight blah blah blah but the above article accurately articulates how losing Coen would affect the team so negatively. Could you write the same thing if Bowles was leaving with any intellectual honesty? As stated by many posters on every bucs fan site, Bowles would solicit minimal if any interest for HC or DC if he was on the open market. Hopefully this doesn’t turn into a Jay Gruden/Sean McVay situation for the Bucs. Washington is just now recovering from that decision made many years ago.

Time for HC-DC-OC Bowles….the guru
January 22nd, 2025 at 6:52 am
Pay the man. Integrate him into the succession vision of the future. Whatever it takes. The offense was creative and fun to watch this year. Improved so much that I’m not sure how it gets better..but it can certainly free fall a long way back down to….(dammit boy don’t even want to think about it).
January 22nd, 2025 at 6:56 am
I’m sure Jacksonville would much rather have Todd Bowles
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
January 22nd, 2025 at 7:18 am
Arians retired for Bowles.
Todd needs to do the same for Coen.
January 22nd, 2025 at 7:19 am
Coen is not HC material yet. This guy has bounced around more than super bouncy ball. He has never stayed around somewhere to build it up. He should stay here and help build a champion and take it over in a year or 2.
January 22nd, 2025 at 7:28 am
OrlBucFan and TBBucs3 can’t wait till Coen is gone and they can revel in the genius that is Todd 500 Bowles. Here comes 5-12

Groundhog Day hit
Sisyphus type hit
January 22nd, 2025 at 7:45 am
If it comes down to Bowles or Coen you’ve got to pick Coen. Why, very simply, we know what we have in each of these coaches. One orchestrated one of the best offensive seasons in team history & the other was responsible for multiple home losses & another one & done playoff run. On the surface you could submit for argument that Bowles has won the division 3 times, but that argument falls flat when you look at our record over the course of those 3 years. Additionally, one must take into account the strength of the division we won.
One is a young coach on the rise & the other is on his way out the door. “Don’t trade tomorrow for the promise of today”.
January 22nd, 2025 at 7:50 am
Bakerfan is spot on. He will be just like Dave Canales and countless others that take the leap way too soon and fail at the next level. There’s nothing wrong with the front office PAYING the man in bonus money for a job well done. Incentives that make him paid as a HC, you eliminate one of the big teases for these coordinators. They have families and reasons not to up and move.
When it is time to take the promotion the coordinators will be more mature and seasoned to be successful. One last thing; wish him well by advise him that he’s not taking anybody from the staff with him.
January 22nd, 2025 at 8:01 am
Evan N said it best.
January 22nd, 2025 at 8:03 am
Hoping that Coen stay but, I am sure the Bucs have a game plan. After what happened with Canales last year and Coen’s offense was 3 times better than Canales, I think the Bucs have a strong plan to keep this offense and the growth of this team going. My questions are, is the QB coach T Lewis ready to call plays or some other in house candidate on staff and do they know Coen’s offense and will Coen take the OL coach with him who was very successful with helping the run game
January 22nd, 2025 at 8:07 am
“Let’s be real: If not for Coen’s high-powered offense, the Bucs don’t win the division and they don’t make the playoffs.”
So why are we even talking about this?
January 22nd, 2025 at 8:19 am
When McVey sent him packing following the 2022 season after going 27th in points and 32nd in Yards the Rams went 10-7 twice including one Division Championship and two trips to Divisional Round of the Playoffs.
Bucs like the Rams will be just fine. Real question is how much better will the 4-13 Jags be?
January 22nd, 2025 at 8:20 am
One Buc Place has been silent about potential changes going on concerning the coaching staff. Besides Coen getting a second interview with the Jags, it looks like Kacy Rodgers’ contract is up and not renewed by the Bucs, why else is he interviewing in Green Bay? Perhaps other coaches also have expired contracts and the Bucs simply are not announcing that, so maybe there could be changes on the defensive coaching staff. As contract details for assistants are rarely announces, it is anyone’s guess. A lot of Bucs’ faithful seem to believe Coen is gone. I hope not but hopefully the Glazers and Licht have been making contingency plans if Coen is offered the gig. Seems like Tampa would be a top destination for potential OC candidates (second to only Detroit), given that if one can coach up the O in Tampa, you are a head coach next year. The drawback is that Bowles is probably on a short lease so coming here could be a one and done even if the O puts up good numbers again.
January 22nd, 2025 at 8:20 am
If Coen leaves , he can take the jet sweep with him.
January 22nd, 2025 at 8:22 am
Loosing Coen would be a swift kick in the junk. The Glazers aren’t really going to let this guy go are they?
Maybe this is what is going on behind the scenes: The Glazers have reached out to Coens agent and said something like this: “Whatever Jacksonville offers we will make it a better situation in Tampa. Promotion to HC and more money.”
The flip side is the Glazers just wait and if Coen is not offered the Jacksonville job then nothing lost because Coen is still under contract in Tampa.
January 22nd, 2025 at 8:44 am
Cardiac kidz, a lot of good points. Incentives and other bonuses to keep a good coordinator around a few extra years would be good for both parties. Teams would have enough time for someone in house to learn and adapt the offense for that reason along ( a coordinator leaving) and for the coordinator more experienced and a stronger resume. I said the same thing over the years, some of the coordinators leave for the HC jobs before they’re ready only to fail. Coen may end up being the next Belichick or Macvay, the difference is, those guys had a few more years as a coordinator under their belt.
January 22nd, 2025 at 8:48 am
Terrible decision if the Bucs let Coen leave. Bucs will without question take a step back on offense.
January 22nd, 2025 at 8:51 am
Jeebus how did you guys ever survive the hurricane. He’s freaking OC who didn’t complete ONE pass, make ONE reception or catch!!!
@Mondy
“He took our rushing attack from dead last to top 5.”
How many yards did he rush? How many defenders did he block?
You guys are off your meds. Settle down it’ll all be clear.
Players play, coaches COACH! How about a little credit where it really belongs.
This is not to say Coen is without talent, it’s to try and put some perspective in this discussion.
BUCKY was a HUGE factor in the improvement!!! He’s the SPECIAL deal from last year, NOT Coen!!! The OFFENSIVE LINE should get FAR more credit than Coen!!! How many defenders did Coen block? How many guys did Carberry pancake?
Here is the order of need for ANY franchise to succeed.
1 – THE PLAYERS!
2 – THE players.
3 The players.
Down at 4 and 5 you can debate whether it’s the GM who FINDS those players or the coaches who put them in position to win.
Coen and Liam are BOTH Irish names. I gotta root for him! But just like the shamrock tat on my thigh Coen has the “Luck of the Irish”! I want what’s best for Liam. If that’s a move to Jax God bless him!
The Bucs are LOADED on Offense with a franchise QB (more important than OC)
A young and upcoming, now experienced unit, OL!!! Plenty of targets including a HOF #1 WR who used and abused Lattimore! This offense is loaded for bear!
Now the only real risk is hiring some Bozo who wants to come in and do things completely different. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.
Question for all. Do you honestly believe the Bucs/TL/TB can’t find another OC who will follow last year’s blueprint? Can we be a little more objective about a great Irish dude? He was great but NOT irreplaceable!!!
January 22nd, 2025 at 9:01 am
It’s really sad what’s going on in Tampa with this team. A defensive coach handed a team that had just won the Super Bowl and his defense now sucks. It’s obvious the offense is the strength of the team so the Glazers brilliant idea is keep giving the quarterback a new coordinator every year. No Glazers don’t think about you’ve only ever won the Lombardi trophy with offensive head coaches that would make too much sense. Who knew the Glazers were gamblers because that’s basically what they keep doing hoping that they find a good coordinator then hoping that Todd finally gets his defense in line as if it has yet
January 22nd, 2025 at 9:01 am
Quickly, name a current or upcoming OC who would come here in Bowles lame duck season….. decisions have to be made and soon!!!!
January 22nd, 2025 at 9:02 am
“Let’s be real: If not for Coen’s high-powered offense, the Bucs don’t win the division and they don’t make the playoffs.”
It sure WASN’T TB’s bottom of the league defense….
That tells you TB is replaceable and good odds of being an upgrade…
Coen is rare and the odds of replacing him with upgrade is slim to none….
Yes, the Bucs will take a massive hit losing Coen…
If they lose Bowels, their chance of upgrading the defensive side goes up greatly!
January 22nd, 2025 at 9:03 am
The Bucs are a talented team and the Bucs front office is proven.
With that said, the Bucs should continue their history of drafting well, and BOWLES has picked two talented Offensive Cordinators.
Let’s end the theatrics. Put some faith in in the entire Bucs organization, who are a draft away from being a Super Bowl contender
January 22nd, 2025 at 9:11 am
I’m glad others can see the “Joe’s” hypocrisy regarding Bowles.
The NFL is a narrative driven organization. Bowles doesn’t provide anything except for a solemn loser.
“Narrative-driven organization?” … Unlike some, Joe has accepted that Bowles will return and is able to look at his weaknesses and strengths. That’s not Joe endorsing Bowles’ greatness or blasting fans holding out hope Bowles leaves today. To each his own. Joe also recognizes coaches evolve positively and negatively. Heck, Andy Reid was clobbered for clock management screwups for a huge chunk of his career.–Joe
If you want the rigged soap opera to go your way, then you have to create an exciting story that can be sold to the ignorant masses.
Having T-Swift date your troglodyte TE seems to be the best story these days.
January 22nd, 2025 at 9:15 am
Even Rashad White increased his yards per carry to 4.3. The talent on the line is about same as last year. Coaching was the difference
January 22nd, 2025 at 9:16 am
I say let Bowles walk and keep Cohen they can always get another DC .
January 22nd, 2025 at 9:17 am
Lots of “hits”…
– an offense that could have taken a step forward with all parties now comfortable will experience more change. Do they have to take a step back? No, but the odds are low for a seamless transition, even if the OC position is in high demand due tot he talent level of the offense.
– Bowles seat becomes even hotter. Even if the defense improves, that improvement may be offset by offensive changes.
– The draft strategy gets murky…as pointed out on the podcast, why burn draft capital on players who fit Bowles system if he is a lame duck?
– Free agent priorities change…why burn cap space on Godwin and Bredeson if there is a substantial chance of the team flaming out and having to do a cleanup of the coaching staff this time next year?
Lots of tough choices for ownership and the GM. Stability would have been good, but it appears to not be in the cards. My guess is Coen leaves, the team continues to be mediocre, and we have a new coach for 2026.
January 22nd, 2025 at 9:22 am
poached coen and hash browns for breakfast 🙁
January 22nd, 2025 at 9:25 am
If Coen leaves then Baker needs to be given the keys to the offence like Peyton Manning had, if we are going to lose our OC every single year let’s give our franchise QB a bigger role in the play calling.
January 22nd, 2025 at 9:27 am
what if:
coen in his gut knows he kinda sucks, and got a little lucky, and can pull a leftwich next year if he stays……
then he’s bolting while he’s hot…
if he knows he’s a bad man and an offensive guru, who can slice and dice opponents at will moving forward, dude will stay…
ben johnson, in his gut, knew he was a bad mofo – so he stayed
January 22nd, 2025 at 9:29 am
Hope Coen stick around but as I’ve said more than twice, I am sure the Bucs have a game plan. Say what you will or may about Bowles but him along with Licht has this franchise in great shape with a lot of young talent on this team. I myself cursed at Bowles when he kept preaching run game and Bucs couldn’t run the ball but then he and Licht brought in Coen and the new OL coach. Iam sure this wasn’t just Licht’s choice alone. Nonetheless, maybe Bowles ain’t a great DC but I do think he know what he’s doing with the Bucs
January 22nd, 2025 at 9:35 am
Still can’t fathom how these guys can just say C-ya after one season. Not sure if he’s ready for HC here or there. Be nice if he stays and TB retires next year but I don’t think it’s fair to force him into retirement when he wants to keep coaching.
January 22nd, 2025 at 9:35 am
Glazers are morons for letting him go.
January 22nd, 2025 at 9:36 am
Bowles is going to always be a .500 coach at best, we don’t win with him.
I doubt Coen would stay for more money hoping that the offense doesn’t backslide. He has a HC opportunity now, he may never get another.
It’ll come down to firing Bowles to keep Coen. It’s assured that Jax would demand his word that he is theirs regardless of what happens here.
January 22nd, 2025 at 9:37 am
“Joe has a gut feeling that if Coen leaves, the 2025 season will see the Bucs take a step back. Maybe more.
The shame of a Coen departure would be great, Joe believes, because the offense wouldn’t get a chance to improve with the whole group having a full season of Coen’s offense under their belts and ready to reach greater heights as the offense progresses.”
If Coen leaves, this is gonna hurt.”
——
And with that. All eyes are on Team Glazer.
January 22nd, 2025 at 9:41 am
Why are the odds low for a seamless transition? Seriously?
I think everybody here can see TB’s weaknesses! Sadly for some of you that’s ALL you can see. Some morons here even suggested he only has his job because of the color of his skin! There is a lot of willful blindness going on.
As LUV and others have so eloquently pointed out..it was BOWLES who found, interviewed, discussed strategy and then came up with Canales and Coen.
I think Coen was better than Canales, perhaps my Irish prejudice and the fact that Canales did NOT have near the players as Coen.
Next guy in will have been THOROUGHLY vetted by Todd. Do you honestly believe he’s going to bring in some jackwagon who wants to upend the applecart? The guy will ABSOLUTELY KNOW what is expected and it’s not some brand new creative thing.
January 22nd, 2025 at 9:44 am
Nobody really knows for sure how big a hit we’d take? The limited sample size (1 season) suggests Cohen’s arrow is pointing upwards, but I myself would like to see another year at least so we can see how he does when defensive coordinators have had more film on what his tendencies are and what has worked to thwart his offense. Perfect world scenario he stays in Tampa next year, the offense keeps humming, the Bucs win the Super Bowl, Bowles retires as a SB winning coach, Cohen gets the same deal as Todd got from Bruce, one of the Buccaneers players starts dating Taylor Swift and Tampa becomes the new perennial “chosen team”. I expect reality to be a little less story book, but I’ll just be happy if Todd takes the next step as a HC and Liam does even better as the Bucs OC.
January 22nd, 2025 at 9:48 am
Not much of a hit.
According to some the Offense will be even better.
Because apparently Coen and his scheme is not responsible for us being a top 5 Offense. Not responsible for taking a dead last rushing game to a top 5 rushing attack. To be in the top of YAC. No Coen and his scheme no sir.
All of that was because of the players and the effect of Bowles on Offense.
That is what i read from some of the fans in this site and other Buc news.
I mean yeah, i dont think a scheme matters at all.
The things i read today. My brain cells are still trying to reboot. A couple of them maybe lost.
It is what it is, we dont make the decisions. But again how the decision is to keep a bottom 5 Defense and change a top 5 Offens is beyond me.
Its a Bucs life. Go Bucs

Your cynicism is sad and I feel sorry for you. I’m going to perhaps aggravate others for violating my rule of responding to people like you but I HONESTLY feel sorry for you!!! I hope you can figure a way to dig out of your cynical hole!
Countless organizations have been overrun by cynicism—a belief that other people are selfish, greedy, and dishonest. Texas A&M’s Dan Chiaburu and his coauthors have found that cynicism predicts a slew of negative outcomes at work, including poor performance, burnout, turnover, and cheating.
Let me guess…another cynical response eh? I tried!
January 22nd, 2025 at 9:56 am
If the Glazers let him go and the offense tanks next season then the Glazers will be public enemy #1 for not taking steps to keep Cohen here.
January 22nd, 2025 at 10:01 am
If not for Coen’s high-powered offense, the Bucs don’t win the division and they don’t make the playoffs.
This is true, so what happened in the playoff game vs Commanders? The offense struggled and sputtered.
January 22nd, 2025 at 10:01 am
“ He took our rushing attack from dead last to top 5.”
He did? Or did Bucky Irving do that?
January 22nd, 2025 at 10:04 am
If I were Liam Cohen, I would just be going through the interview process just to gain negotiation leverage. The Glazers are not sure what to pay him until they see Jacksonville’s offer. From this point on, it’s just up to the Glazers. I’m hoping the Glazers feel the same way as most of us here, and don’t want to see Cohen leave.
January 22nd, 2025 at 10:07 am
Coen putting Rashad White in the doghouse after the Cowboys game was an atrocious decision, the offense was not the same after that when he started trying to use Bucky Irving the same way the Titans used Derrick Henry.
That and the questionable play calls in the playoff game tells me that he’s not ready to be a head coach.
The reality is that the offense performed at a top 10 level this season because the Bucs have a top 10 roster on offense.
January 22nd, 2025 at 10:12 am
As someone that would like to see Coen hang around I think what makes me nervous is that it is not a question of money. I don’t think this whole thing would be this far along if it were. Jax can offer him the one thing the Glazers are seemingly unwillingly to do.
January 22nd, 2025 at 10:12 am
@stpetebucsfan
I’ve seen you make this argument on every single Coen post at this point and I’m sick of seeing it.
You make out like Bowles is some sort of OC whisperer who has a unique talent to find the diamond in the rough when it comes to OCs. You make it sound like there are 10 undiscovered guys sitting on the couch each year ready to run a top 5 NFL offence and all they need is Bowles to turn his magic eye to them and make them a star.
It’s an absolutely ridiculous claim to make, like crediting Belichick for having an eye for QB talent since he drafted Brady as if it wasn’t just pure luck.
January 22nd, 2025 at 10:13 am
Todd Bowles’s record as a head coach is 54-68. His winning percentage is .443%. So, I guess we’re all supposed to ignore this! We’re all supposed to pretend he’s a defensive Guru! The people suggesting this might be the same people who expect us to believe there are 67 genders….It’s insane! Todd Bowles is a slightly below average coach! “You are what your record says you are”! This is how these disagreements are settled. I brought the receipts! If you disagree please show me any statistics that back your claim!
January 22nd, 2025 at 10:44 am
On the contrary, I believe that the Bucs will be a better team in 2025, no matter what Coen does. The post-Brady course is well established. Two years ago, they brought in Baker and Canales, building a solid passing game to anchor the offense. An effective kicker was found. Canales betook himself and some of his assistants to Carolina, amid wailing and gnashing of teeth among the faithful. Bowles and company brought in Coen, who, with the aid of some excellent draft choices, built up the running game. Canales and Coen were not lucky stabs in the dark; the organization knows how to get good people, and they will continue to do so. The defense is the next area for improvement, but it is not the shipwreck some claim. Looking at the numbers, the defense was indeed 29 in passing yards per game, but I note that it was ahead of both the Ravens and Lions, who are not called atrocious defenders. This low position was counterbalanced by a run defense that was the fourth best in the league, allowing fewer than 100 yards per game. Overall, the Bucs were 18 in yards and 16 in points, basically a middle-of-the-pack position. That’s not a bad place to be as the starting point for the next step in the rebuild.

“Tbbucs3 Says:
“ He took our rushing attack from dead last to top 5.”
He did? Or did Bucky Irving do that?”
Both.
Do you think Bucky would’ve had as good of a year under Lefty or Canales?
I don’t
January 22nd, 2025 at 12:11 pm
^^mtn^^
I certainly take your point mtn but we should leave lefty out of it we don’t really know how much blame to apportion to BL or Brady who certainly had far more power than BL. Some could say perhaps that Bowles did a bad job of coordinating those two separate interests.
As for Canales IF he had the same OL which was vastly improved when he left I gotta say sure. Bucky is a very special talent! RB’s like him do not come along very often. But Barton turned out to be a good find at OC, made some rookie mistakes but he’s a Dukie and incredibly bright he’ll learn from them.
