Credible, Non-Anonymous Source In Jacksonville Suggests Coen Is Jags’ Top Choice

January 21st, 2025

Disturbing stuff Joe found in Jacksonville, perhaps more sickening because in order to find it, Joe had to suffer through Jacksonville sports radio.

The radio play-by-play voice of the Jaguars, Frank Frangie, who also is a longtime afternoon sports radio voice in Jacksonville, was very clear that he believes Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen was the Jaguars’ No. 2 choice for head coach after former Lions coordinator Ben Johnson, who will be the Bears new head coach.

Frangie made the comments Friday on the air, 1010 XL sports radio in Jacksonvile.

“What I hear is they really like Liam Coen, like not like him, but really like him,” Frangie said. “That he did really well in his interview a couple of nights ago. It was an 8:30 p.m. interview. And if it’s not Ben Johnson, it’s Liam Coen.”

Ouch.

Again, Frangie works for the team and yesterday he further explained he was told Coen, along with Johnson and Aaron Glenn, “wowed” the team and “jumped off the page” compared to other candidates.

Frangie noted how collectively he has been a huge fan of the Jaguars’ other head coach candidates (they had 10 first interviews), especially Ravens playcaller Todd Monken. Frangie said Monken is a personal friend but he’s hearing Coen is the guy who impressed most after Johnson.

Even more troubling for Bucs fans afraid of losing Coen, Frangie made these comments during a conversation with CBS Sports insider Prickly Pete Prisco.

Prisco lives in the Jacksonville area (unless he moved) and has intimate knowledge of the team.

Prisco said he believed the Jaguars’ order of head coach picks is Johnson followed by Coen and then Glenn, the Lions defensive coordinator allegedly being targeted by the Jets.

“I would not be surprised if the Jaguars have them ranked the same way,” Frangie replied.

Team Glazer still has time to offer Coen a mountain of money to cancel his second interview with the Jaguars, so Joe isn’t shaking yet.

Frangie wasn’t being a total Jaguars homer. Yesterday, he said he has no faith that Coen and the other first-time head coaches the Jags have been studying will be good at the job.

I imagine Coen would jump at the chance to separate himself from a bum of a coach as Bowels…..

He can pick his own TRUE defensive guru!

  2. Couch Fan Says:

I think Coen was an upgrade over Canales but I am still torn whether he is good or the exceptional talent we have on offense makes anyone look competent. Could be both.

I cant fault him for jumping at the chance to be HC and ridding himself of the coattail rider.

  3. Buc4evr Says:

Glazers better do something to keep Coen.. Back up the money truck Joel and Brian.

  4. Jecir Says:

I ask it this way. Corn is getting interviews. If Bowles were to be let go, would he be a top candidate out there? The answer is no. Don’t do what Washington did before. They kept Jay Gruden an extra year and let McVay go. Bowles has 1 more year left on his contract. Buy it out.

  5. Davenport Says:

If Coen goes, then Bowles should be gone too. Chances of getting a 3rd high level OC are minimal. That being the case, Bowles will be gone a year from now anyway.

    Time for a total reset.

  6. avejoe85 Says:

Time for Bowles to go so Coen can stay in Tampa with Baker

  7. BucVoyager Says:

What he did after Evans and Godwin went down was pretty much icing on the interview cake. Lost his best 2 weapons and still found a way to be very productive. 1 or 2 clunker games won’t dim that result.

  8. Kgh4life Says:

Why didn’t the Bucs just make him the highest paid OC?

  9. stpetebucsfan Says:

Que Sera Sera, whatever will be will be.

So the JJJoes were right and I was wrong in stating the importance of a “Franchise QB”. Coen will have one in Jax! Whether he can turn around the slipping career of Trevor Lawrence might be up for question but if Liam goes I hope he does succeed and the Bucs get to meet him in a future SB.

BETTER to have Coen in Jax than N.O. right?

Meanwhile the Bucs HAVE a “franchise QB’ the most important and difficult piece of the puzzle to find.

Has Baker EVER had the same OC two years in a row? He is beyond used to adapting. HC BOWLes has had 3 1/2 OC’s in his 3 years as Bucs HC.
Brady (1/2 to Leftwich who had no power over the GOAT nor should he have)
    Canales and Coen.

Coen inherited a MUCH better team than Canales and the next OC will get a squad even better still!

Next guy in gets a franchise QB used to adapting to a new OC EVERY season!

He gets at top ten OL which is only getting better and better.

He gets not one but THREE solid RB’s with great hands, one of whom has the “potential” to become a Barry Sanders clone. No Bucky is NOT Sanders YET, but he has clearly shown he is a special RB that any OC would drool over.

And he gets a slew of targets for Baker…ME13, JMAC, (pick any#3 WR) along with two maybe 3 TE’s one of whom has already broken out in Cade Allen and another who has flashed in Devin Culp, and Payne Durham has looked pretty good in his very limited opportunities.

And he MIGHT get a healthy CG14 bumping JMAC back to #3 but I’m not counting on it, LOVE CG and hope Jason can figure a way to keep him and he remains healthy. But even without him an OC should be drooling over the opportunity.

Players play and coaches coach. The coach is nothing without the players!
The Bucs now have the players! On offense. Lets hope Jason is just as successful this season with the draft. Last year he fixed the offense this year hopefully the D.

  12. Ted Says:

As long as we keep Bowles……I hear the Bucs are getting trade offers for TB because he is the reason we have won three straight division titles.

  13. AK Says:

Hope he doesn’t leave. If however he does, I think promoting Josh Grizzard to O/C would make the most sense. He was our passing game coordinator. In addition to that, he spent time in Miami working alongside Ben Johnson.

  14. Mark Says:

If Coen leaves, then it is simple. Fire Bowles, hire Todd Monken. Bowles is entering the fourth year of a five year contract that is not market-competitive, so the cost of cutting ties is minimal. It makes no sense to rebuild the offensive staff yet again for a likely lame-duck head coach. Give Mayfield and the offensive players a stable environment and system.

The team claims it is “Superbowl ready”, so put the offense in the hands of a proven professional who can maximize performance during the two to three year window when the older talent (Evans, Godwin) are viable and the younger players are maturing.

  15. dumboldguy Says:

I don’t get it. If Bowles were on the market today he would not get a sniff as HC anywhere in the NFL. He would not get a sniff as DC anywhere in the NFL. If you took Coen out of the equation the Bucs should be looking for Bowles replacement. With Coen about to be poached and being one of the top offensive minds in the game right now, it just makes it so much worse. So much worse.

  17. Alanbucsfan Says:

It is amazing the pass Coen gets for the result of the Commanders playoff game.
Bucs had their lowest rushing yards, total yards and 1st downs since the 49ers and Chiefs games.
Fans want to blame the Commanders time of possession which yielded 13 regulation points for the Commanders.
But choose to ignore 3 points scored by Bucs on 1st 3 possessions and then turnover and screw up in 4th quarter that led to Commanders retaking the lead.

  18. Austin Cline Says:

It’s either this year or next (assuming the Bucs’ offense is still strong) that Coen is offered a head coaching opportunity. I think he will stay with the Bucs if the Glazers give him a big raise this year with promises of becoming the next head coach after Bowles.

  19. stpetebucsfan Says:

The team claims it is “Superbowl ready”

Not to be disagreeable but simply curious. I honestly, without snark, would love to know which representative of “the team” has claimed that? I certainly can’t read everything and so I appreciate new info.

  20. OHBucFan Says:

Todd will have 30 calls from agents the day Coen is hired.
    Baker
    Mike
    Bucky
    The OL
The list goes on and on. Like Jay Leno said years ago: Go ahead and eat ‘em, we’ll make more.
Todd has proven that he can hire a quality OC that lines up with his philosophy. Haters gonna hate but a HC can come from any of the three phases of a football team. Can you lead men to do their best? Priority One. Bowles is a keeper.
This is the NFL not college but living in Ohio, so many social warriors were demanding that Ryan Day get fired for not beating Michigan. One national championship later and they look like the fools they were. Just trolls wanting to be heard.

  21. Mike Johnson Says:

Coen is gone. Big loss for this Buc Offense….BIG

  23. Upstate NY BUC Says:

Alex Van Pelt!!! Bake loves him! Go Bucs.

  24. Durango 95 Says:

Well that plot does seemed to have thickened. No way of knowing exactly where the Glazers are on this. But, it’s not like we didn’t see this coming from a mile away. So they have had time to prepare.

Maybe CTB wants Coen to leave so he can show all his doubters how wrong they are and prove he can thrive as a HC without Coen.

    Nah. He knows better.

  25. AirCasted-BoneBruise Says:

If he leaves this team for that squad…. woof, good luck bro. Can’t blame him for taking a head coach job, but he’d be better served waiting for this one to open. Jags are an organization in chaos and have a subpar roster
Jags are not an organization in chaos, and they have more pieces than many teams that have openings. –Joe

  26. BucU Says:

If he goes he goes. That will have no bearing on Todd Bowles next season.
Meaning if they shyt the bed offensively and/or defensively and don’t improve on 10-7 then he will be gone. No one is going to give him a free pass because he lost his OC.

  27. Ds Says:

If the jags were smart they’d hire monken

  28. GoneGator Says:

Show him the door and watch the girls completely lose it.

  29. Kgh4life Says:

    @ Upstate NY Buc.

Van Pelt is an experienced OC, but he’s not creative and didn’t he get demoted with the Patriots? I prefer Grizzard or Kyle Kubiak.

  30. Hodad Says:

Bucs should not look any further then in their own building to replace Coen. You have to promote Coen’s right hand man, and promote the rest of the staff so Coen can’t take any of them with him. It doesn’t have to be the same play caller, but for the sake of continuity it has to be the same playbook. This offense works, and the players know it. Most important Baker thrives in it. Bump the offensive staff up, they earned it. Fire some of the defensive coaches that aren’t getting it done. That’s what I’d do if Coen bolts.

“If Coen goes, then Bowles should be gone too.”

So the Bucs can pick from the scraps left for head coaches?

  33. Steve Says:

I might be in the minority here on this but, if Coen leaves, I think that we have a suitable OC already in the building in Thad Lewis. He has great experience in offenses. Was with Chip Kelly at UCLA, was on staff with Bruce in 2020, worked with Byron, worked with Canales, and now has worked with Coen. The guy understands this team, and has seen multiple successful offenses, and is a guy that Baker knows.

If Coen leaves that stinks, but the next guy is right in the building, he was close to the job a year ago, he can take it and run with it now imo.

  34. heyjude Says:

Coen got a 2nd interview so he probably is going to get the HC job. It’s his dream to be a HC. If he gets it, I am happy for him and his family. Todd chose Coen and Canales both for OC and Canales got a HC job after a year. Todd will pick another good one.

  35. Ted Says:

@OHBucsfan, well said…..keep Bowles and we will be winning the Super Bowl.

Perhaps it’s a good thing ,,, Baker really never had time to throw deep cause of the scheme ,,,, he was running for his life lots of the time so I wouldn’t Blame Coen if he left , he’s got Trevor , Etiene and Thomas ,,, good pieces but some of Coens success was a result of Baker being bold and somewhat nuts ,,,,, if he can get Trevor to do that then Jax will be fine!

  40. Jeff Says:

Lose Coen and the Bucs are officially the Yucs again. Formal ceremony to follow.

  41. MelvinJunior Says:

I think he would be absolutely insanely CRAZY to accept THAT job for just one reasons alone… Trent. Baalke. Unless, it was for something north of at least a 5yr/$50MIL. Period. I’m not taking it. The Bucs FO is going to have to step up. There will be better opportunities… He could be THE #1 Candidate next offseason and be in a MUCH better position with having HIS PICK. Hopefully, that will be HC of the Bucs.

  42. Bill Kilmer Says:

I think that the fact he is first up on the next round, tells you all you need to know about who is their choice. I think he is gone unless he decides he does not care for Balke and decides to pass.

  43. Pewter Power Says:

All of these owners we have and they would keep changing offensive coordinators making it unstable for the quarterback after paying him all that money. Evidence has shown offense is winning games for teams but let’s stick with the old stubborn defensive coach with the bad defense. Great job Glazers

  44. Hail2dabucs Says:

Joe wants to respond to aircasted-bonebruise with his response . Joe , good God man ! Don’t know what your looking at ? Maybe college tape ? But Trevor Lawrence is a BUST . you know how we describe DE’S in the past ? Ya , you know the saying . Look like Tarzan , play like Jane. We’ll Lawrence look like Jane, and plays like her too . He is not special . The bucs win a weak division . Jacksonville is usually at the bottom of a weaker division. 2 years ago yes , they did come from a behind and beat the chargers but should not have won that game . They have a good rookie WR & not much else . The proof is in the tape . I don’t NOT want to see Coen go. Drew up some nice plays and had the offense humming most of the year . I remember you saying baker was probably going to take a step back after his best season last year . He one up’d it and put up serious numbers with the help of Coen . Coen also had the running game in the top of the league. Our GM & staff really know how to draft unlike Jacksonville . The players are the ones making the plays for sure but coaching plays an important part in game situations . I did not like the sweep with Jay Mac inside our own 20 but I can’t fault Coen too much because that play worked plenty all year . Coen needs to get a raise & come back with us & see where Todd’s head is at after 2025 . # Coenforbucsheadcoachin2026

  45. BucsFan81 Says:

Well good news is Bowles will be gone after next year because he won’t hit on a good OC 3 times in a row to save his job. At some point that miracle is going to run out. His defense was exposed all season and he is not the guru DC everyone makes him out to be. Just think next year at this time we will be shopping for coaches and maybe we will still someone top OC from there team.

  46. Couch Fan Says:

Dont be to sure about that BucsFan81

While he is a terrible coach one thing is clear, he is extremely lucky. So 3 in a row isnt out of the realm of possibility.

  47. stpetebucsfan Says:

    @LightningVinny

“Baker being bold and somewhat nuts”

I love that Vinny! I think you hit the nail on the head! Many of us have talked about his courage and cojones but I think you’re absolutely correct.

Baker throws his body around like a guy “somewhat nuts”. Virtually all the running QB’s like Daniels do it with speed and great moves, not many if any wrap to arms around the ball like a FB and plow into three defenders with one of them being Bobby Wagner! I might go from “somewhat” to truly nuts on that one.

  48. Marine Buc Says:

How many offensive coordinators has Baker Mayfield played under since his days at Cleveland?

    8-9?

    This sucks.

Continuity matters – having to learn an entire new offense every year really sets you back as a team…

  49. chad Says:

Big mistake if the Bucs let Liam go, don’t really want this offense who was top 5 with a much improved run game to have to learn its third straight play book? If I’m the glazers, I tell Liam before you take that job give us a chance to match it and make you a head coach here, that way you can be the head coach of a better team with a better qb and offense

  50. Saskbucs Says:

Jags are not an organization in chaos, and they have more pieces than many teams that have openings. –Joe

They need a Canales or Coen to sort out Lawrence and if Lawrence can’t be sorted out as a 55 million QB they are definitely in chaos. Also everyone in the media seems to think Khan is out to lunch and 2/3 of the league despises Baalke… the Jags are essentially Chicago south right now. Decent roster to work with but the surrounding organization is a clown show.

People blaming Coen for the playoff loss are also out to lunch. That game is prime example of both Bowles and Coen having solid game plans but the other OC and HC/DC having better ones. Then the Bucs didn’t execute. The analytics had Coens O in that game as one of the most efficient of the year, poor player execution on the last 2 drives potentially cost us 7 points if fumble becomes FG and FG becomes TD without botched snap. 27 points in that TOP is terrific.

I don’t automatically think Coen leaving hurts us bad. We have a top 5 offense, any OC with some creativity and sense should be able to put up points. I don’t necessarily think this team is better by making Coen HC either. Todd wearing both hats is a huge problem and losing Coen to keep Bowles would also be a problem in my opinion. If Todd was gone, Monken is a bad answer, that guy has now blown it twice in the playoffs with Lamar and not sticking to his run game. This won’t happen but in a perfect world, to give the Bucs the best shot in 2025, I would have Carroll at HC, Coen at OC and Bowles at DC.

  51. Chris Says:

Bucs fan living in Jax here , if he comes here it’s going to ruin his reputation these players here don’t even want to be in this city he comes here it will be the biggest mistake of his coaching career he needs to stay in Tampa another year and then see what’s out there

  52. GoneGator Says:

The ONLY downside is lack of continuity and new terminology.
There will be no shortage of qualified candidates for O. C. if Coen leaves.

  54. Tbbucs3 Says:

Oh no, what are we gonna do with a top 10 QB, a Hall of Fame WR, a stout offensive line and a stud running back?

The reality is that the Bucs offense is still going to be great with or without Liam Coen. The overreaction to losing Liam Coen is unnecessary.

It would take a historically, bad OC to mess this. As long as the bucs, don’t hire Marcus Arroyo, we’ll be just fine

What can the Buccaneers do to keep him? There has to be options. It’s not like the jags is a fantastic opportunity right about now.

Baker gets a new OC more than once a year in his career. It’s horrendous. The guy is just hitting a groove and needs the stability.

If I owned the Buccaneers, I would take my chances finding a new DC and promote Liam. Bowles said he didn’t want to coach much longer anyway right?

Who’s a viable replacement & available to fill a potential Bucs OC vacancy???

The job has to be somewhat alluring to a candidate given Mayfield’s showing over 2 yrs & given quality pieces in place. The unit, as a whole, is in fairly good shape for 2025. (WR, LG & depth pcs are the only open OFF concerns & they can be fixed via FA & through the Draft)

  62. Oscar Says:

Stpetebucsfan, Baker had Alex Van Pelt in 2020 and 2021 as OC even though Stefanski called the plays. Nonetheless you are right, he’s had a lot of different offensive coordinators in his career. So he definitely can adapt.

  65. ManzielMadness Says:

The only good news is if he does choose to leave, we should have our pick of the top OC’s candidates. Who wouldn’t want to work with the talent we have on offense, especially since our last 2 OC’s got promotions.

Baker’s up there. But comparing him to guys in the past when all the passing statistics like passer rating are way higher in todays passing league.

That used to be the Jameis Winston argument. That he really threw no more ints than did the older guys. The game has changed. Understand that gentlemen.

By the way, no reason to leave out Jayden Daniels passer rating 116.2 in the playoffs. Plus Bucs have better weapons than Washington.

I’d hate to see Coen go, but I get it. Why would you not take the opportunity to do things your way and get paid along the way. The sad thing is Coen and the O carried this team and the guy that needs to go is staying. I don’t get OBP and their decisions. So what if the players like Bowles. His record is mediocre at best, just like when he was the HC for the Jets. The guy makes excuses when the team doesn’t achieve and is good at blaming others. If that is not a red flag for a bad leader and HC, I am not sure what is. We don’t pay for tickets and buy merchandise because the player’s like Todd Bowles. Just wait until NO, ATL or CAR actually have a good team. ATL almost got there for a moment and we were 0-2 against them. One of these teams is going to wipe the floor with Todd Bowles eventually. Why wait for it to happen.

  71. BucEmUp Says:

We got lucky getting this guy, and Canalas looks to be getting things on track with his offense in Carolina. It’s going to be hard to hit on 3 in a row, and this offense is the only reason we won a subpar division again.

Potentially letting go of the biggest strength on the coaching staff is a hard pill to swallow.

Gonna be more gloomy in Tampa than this weather if we lose him.
Never seen the Bucs run the ball this well

    geno711,

The passer rating doesn’t really change much going back in time.
Most of these stats measure things like %Comp; YRDS/Catch. TD/pass attemp, INT’s/attemp, and so forth. Didn’t deliberately leave out JD. He hasn’t completed his playoff set for the year which is why he probably got kicked out of the dat set.

C in Coen can also stand for C in cracked-in-the-head as in stupid. He leaves here for a HC job he’s not ready for, good riddance!! I know Joe has to keep those $$clicks$$ coming. So be it.

  76. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Coen isn’t leaving. It’s all panick over nothing.

  77. Dick Says:

Only the Bucs would pick a bottom five defensive coach over a top 5 offensive coach. SMH. This shouldn’t even be a hard decision.
