“It Sped Up The Entire Cycle'”

January 20th, 2025

“This doesn’t look like my year, Bake.”

So ESPN NFL super insider Adam Schefter was on TV yesterday talking about a changed landscape in the world of head coach openings.

Bucs fans are paying attention, worried about losing one of their own.

Tampa Bay offensive coordinator Liam Coen was interviewed by Jacksonville for their head coach opening, among many other candidates, and it’s assumed that he was impressive. And some anonmous reports say Coen was.

Schefter reported yesterday that the loss of the Lions to the Commanders on Sunday night was unexpected by NFL owners seeking a new head coach. So Lions playcaller Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, with newfound freedom to interview without restriction, have “sped up the entire cycle” of head coach hiring, per Schefter.

Glenn and Johnson are both potential Jaguars hires, Schefter said, noting Johnson is deciding between the Bears, Raiders and Jaguars.

It’s not sounding great for Coen leaving Tampa, though it certainly remains possibility.

(Schefter’s video report is below).

Maybe Jacksonville would like Todd Bowles to be their HC? No compensation necessary.

  2. JimBobBuc Says:

Bring back Coen and pay him HC salary to be OC. If that’s more than what Bowles is getting, give Bowles a raise so he makes $1 more than Coen.

  3. BucfaninMi Says:

Offensive HC Defensive HC start a new trend

  4. Bill Kilmer Says:

Wow, man to much hate on Bowles. Yes the D needs help bigtime. However, when you listen to LIght, you get the impression, they knew the defense had issues. I believe he said, we knew we had pieces on the defense to fill and expected it to take some time. Yes, agree the defensive scheme has issues. However, Bowles has not had much to work with either. I think Light and the Bucs were expecting more on the rebuilding side. However, due to a great draft, I think even they were surprized how competitive the Bucs were this year. In short I think the Organzation has a plan and like it or not that includes Bowles.
Yes while being selfish let’s hope Coen staye at least another year. We know Bowles is , that is not changing in the near future.

  5. Hodad Says:

Notice how teams are interested in Coen, but not one coach from Todd’s defensive staff. You would think a defensive guru like Todd would have teams looking to hire at least one of his assts for a D.C. job? No team wants one of our co DCs to become their D.C.? Very telling. I guess when you consider it takes two of Todd’s stooges to do the work of one real D.C., why would any team want them to lead their defense? Both have been in this system for five years, and neither is capable of taking the reins. Not a good look for Todd, and his assstants.

  6. Fred McNeil Says:

I’d sure like to keep Coen at least one more year.
He did a great job in year one.

  7. Fred McNeil Says:

I noticed that too, Hodad. They’re after our front office and offense leaders. Not so much defense

  8. FlumundaCheese Says:

Let’s trade Bowles to the Jaguars for a stack of Arby’s coupons.

  9. Henry Says:

Pffffft lets give Bowles and a stack of Arby’s coupons and some of the big, uglies on the cheerleading squad to the Jaguars.

  10. stpetebucsfan Says:

Hodad and Fred for the win!!! Way to go guys! Figure out a way to insult Bowles even if you have to back door it through assistant coaches!

So BOWLes figures out how to replace TWO OC’s but he gets NO credit. He does such a great job that both are instantly HC candidates with the first getting a job.

But don’t give CREDIT for that when you can satisfy that 80% of NEGATIVE thinking that most of us have! Yep the fact that the few HC jobs open haven’t been filled by one of Todd’s D guys must meant that Todd sucks eh?

Could it be that since BOWLes is his own DC the assistants haven’t been considered? There is NO DC to interview!!! Why haven’t they interviewed any Offensive assistants, run coordinators etc. Is that a reflection on Coen or BOWLes?

  11. JustOneGame Says:

Not a big deal if Coen leaves. We have plenty of over qualified JBF posters here who would surely take a demotion to be the OC of the Bucs!

  12. Ultra ClodHopper Says:

The scenarios in order from best to worst are:

    1. Both Coen and Bowles stay
    2. Bowles gone Coen HC
    3. Both gone
    4. Coen gone and Bowles stays.

  13. Aqualung Says:

Oh please. Oh please. Oh please. Do not let Coen leave.

  14. BA’s Red Pen Says:

Why isn’t Casey Rogers getting any considerations for…..never mind.

  15. Hawk Says:

    First of all….
One of the reasons Buccaneer defensive assistants are not being interviewed is that the NFL has become an offensive game. Most owners/GMs now want an offensive genius to get their team to the next level. Truth be told, the loss to the Commanders was *everyone’s* fault; from the coaches to the players (*every* coach and *every* player). A close loss with that many brain-farts cannot be pinned on any one person.
I believe Coach Bowles is a ‘good’ coach, not (yet) a great coach (and might never get to that pinnacle), but Coach Coen is a total unknown as a head coach. For that matter, he has a very small sample size for an OC.
Licht has shown the ability to bring in impact players even when the salary cap is tight, so I don’t really see the window closing any time soon. I think we should give Coach Bowles *one* more year to see if we have an Arians or a Dungy.

  16. StickinUp4Centers Says:

The irony of calling for Bowles to be fired on a post talking about Aaron Glenn, a head coaching candidate whose defense was SPANKED by the Commanders, is hilarious.

  17. Hodad Says:

No one wants Buc defensive coaches because they’ve done a poor job in Tampa. Yes St. Pete it is a slight on Bowles. For a defensive genius who’s been in the league for years with the same assistants not one has gone on to do anything. Great, let him take credit for Coen, and Canalas. To bad he can’t find a coach who knows how to fix the 31 st ranked defense in the league.

  18. Beeej Says:

Other than the soft zone that continually grants 7 yard receptions all the way down the field, my only other beef with is defense is depending in linebackers to cover speedy receivers. Most of edge rushers in the league seemed to average about 5% of plays in coverage, OURS were 20%, and they allowed nearly a 100% completion rate. I can’t grasp him continually doing something that doesn’t work

  19. GoneGator Says:

    @stpete
Like I’ve said before, an article on Joe’s favorite apple pie recipe would be turned into a yea but Todd sucks thread by the obsessive compulsive bigots around here.

No matter the topic or subject, just fling poop in Todd’s direction. 🙄

  20. BigBoiBuc Says:

Need Coen to stay. Can’t change OCs every frickin year and expect the offense to keep clicking. Give him a big raise.

  21. stpetebucsfan Says:

    @Hawk

You better be careful with that spot on comment. It’s all true but as Jack Nicholson famously screamed in “A Few Good Men”…changing one word
    “They can’t handle the truth!”

  22. ^^mtn^^ Says:

Hopefully Glenn goes to the Jags & Johnson to the Raiders

  23. BallHawk75 Says:

As much as I hate agreeing with the Joes on most things, I do now have to agree that we looked better than the Lions vs the Redskins.

Take the ill timed fumble back and not be such a Swiss cheese like defense and we easily win that game.

Doesn’t change the fact that we lost yet again in prime time. But we gave the hottest team in the playoffs their best fight so far.

I’m still in favor of firing Bowles as soon as we can. That opinion will not change.

It’s a shame to waste another opportunity with the talent we do have.

  24. Defense Rules Says:

So Joe’s article is about the changing landscape in the world of HC openings, and somehow our position coaches got roasted because no other team wanted to interview them for their HC vacancy. Gee, I wonder if that’s because they’re Position Coaches and not Coordinators?

Bucs’ position coaches have almost all been here between 3-6 years. Several came here with Todd Bowles when he was hired to be BA’s defensive coordinator back in 2019.

    o Kacy Rodgers (6 years) … Run game coordinator/DLine
    o Larry Foote (6 years)… Pass game coordinator/ILBs
o George Edwards (2 years) … OLB coach
o Nick Rapone (6 years) … Safeties coach
o Kevin Ross (6 years) … Cornerbacks coach
o Tim Atkins (6 years) … Assistant Secondary coach
o Rashad Johnson (3 years) … Assistant Secondary coach
    o Keith Tandy (5 years) … Defensive/Special Teams assistant
o Joey Fitzgerald (3 years) … Defensive Quality Control Coach

Looking at the defensive results over 3-6 years, I’d say that these position coaches have a pretty good handle on how to coach Todd Bowles hybrid 3-4 defense. In the 5 years from 2020-2024, they’ve won 51 & lost 33 games (60.7%), plus winning 6 & losing 4 playoff games. And oh ya, winning a Super Bowl plus 4 NFC South championships.

Personally have no issue with the position coaches. I do feel however that we desperately need to improve the defensive roster, need to hire a defensive coordinator, and very likely transition back to the 4-3 (we’re relying too heavily on blitzing IMO, and that’s hurting our pass defense).

  25. ^^mtn^^ Says:

If they go to a 4-3 DR, can see them re-signing KJ as a SAM

JJ at Mike & LD/ Sir ‘Glass’ e-a at Will without any additions. Jones should stick too

  26. Mac Says:

Why would we give credit to Bowles for hiring an OC? He isn’t doing the hiring. Isn’t that our GM and scouting department? Bowles has no clue on either side of the ball these days. I’m not here to talk bad on Bowles but really? He isn’t hiring these guys. Your a fool if you think otherwise.
