“You Got Some Extra Bag”
January 20th, 2025There was a hidden message behind the Bucs’ final win two weeks ago, when they took care of the slimy Saints and secured the NFC South title and a (short-lived) playoff berth.
That was the message screamin’ Stephen A. Smith of BSPN wanted to get out to the nation. The Bucs take care of their own.
When head coach Todd Bowles gave the Bucs the green light to throw to Mike Evans in the final secons so he could keep his 1,000-yard receiving streak alive, despite the game being a one-score contest, that opened people’s eyes.
SAS believes the Bucs deserve a tip of the hat.
“I’ve got to applaud the Buccaneers,” SAS said. “Especially the Baker Mayfields of the world and the rest of his teammates.
“Not only did you get [Mike Evans] the record, but you got some extra bag. And they knew that. And they made sure they got it. Major props to all of them.”
Evans also pocketed $3 million in bonus money as a result of that final pass.
Players across the NFL see that. And when the free agency dinner bell rings in just over seven weeks, that could be a factor.
Players (and agents) notice when teams go out of their way for players to achieve personal goals that are often tied to bonuses.
Few NFL players ever see a third contract. So that extra effort by Bowles and the Bucs to make sure one of their players hits a big bonus, that goes a long way in recruiting.
Players know the Bucs will take care of them.

Do players on the Bucs defense get bonuses for making Kirk Cousins look like Joe Montana?
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

It makes sense, it may help us in FA. We need help there. We need to line up an edge and linebacker. We also need to draft secondary. So that was a plus, makes Bowles look good to play for.

Well in fairness had Bowles not let ME13 get that last pass vs. NO it would have meant his decision to accept a penalty, that wiped out the 6 or so yard catch Mike made vs Carolina the week prior, would have cost Evan’s the record (and $3M). I don’t think Bowles wanted the perception to be he was the guy who cost Mike the chance at breaking Rice’s record, as well as $3M Glazer bucks, had he decided to kneel vs NO. Plus I am in the camp that believes the NFL is an entertainment product (with a gambling component), and sometimes things will be done (dare I even speculate “allowed to happen”) to create a buzz for both fans and sports media to talk about. Continuing the potential record-breaking streak fits the bill.

Todd Bowles is the guru of player care. Saying it again, let him concentrate full time attention to the head coz hong job and hire a full time DC. Todd simply has too much on his plate in the modern NFL, trying to don’t huge jobs and compete against other great teams with more resources

Dallas benched their QB (I believe) in order to avoid paying him a bonus. I also believe they have a LB due to hit free agency. He would make an excellent addition to our defense. Maybe he took notice of how the Bucs treated Mike Evans. His name might be Parsons, and I’d give him a call if I knew him, but I don’t.

Yeah 1sparkybuc, the Cowgirls really boned Cooper Rush by sitting him down when bonus coin was within reach. That is reminiscent of something that Hugh Culverhouse would have pulled back in the creamsicle era……

*17 Games. Yeah, with an asterisk. They risked an interception and not making the playoffs for an *. In fact, 3 of last 4 years Evans needed the * to get to 1000 yards. Not impressed. The team comes first.

Gave up listening to this POS years ago Joe. Got the personality of a Brillo pad.
Go Bucs!

100% Joe. Players across the league definitely took notice.

Hahahaha, ihhhhhhh wow, This Is so clever and funny and smart and original, not obvious low hanging fruit at all! You are SoOoOoOo hilarious……… ohhh no wait, you are a idiot.

So not impressed by Al’s comment. How many games did Mike play in this year?
Why risk throwing the ball on any down? They could get an interception!
Why risk running the ball? They could fumble!
Why risk kneeling? They could trip themselves up on the snap!
Why risk playing football? They could get hurt!
Why risk getting out of bed in the morning? They might have to interact with morons like Al!
January 20th, 2025 at 6:26 am
If you can’t trust your team to throw a 5 yard pass without getting it picked off you don’t have much of a team. We still making a big deal of that?
January 20th, 2025 at 6:38 am
They didn’t throw Mike the ball for the bonus, they threw it to him for the record. If it was for any other player to just get 1k yards or a a bonus they take the knee in that situation. Evans is different though and so was the situation, it was the record and the money just happened to be apart of that.

Oh they noticed trust me, that’s probably why tyreek hill is dreaming tampa right now but we don’t need anyone messing with evans touches being a diva

I agree, available or not, let’s steer away from diva receivers like Tyreek H, Stephon Diggs, CD Lamb, Brandon Aiyuk, AJ Brown, George Pickens, n especially DK Metcalf. Please, we learned our lesson from AB. The Bucs are vetting into players who are humble n respectful with good morals, work ethics n character. I love our receivers except for Sterling Sheppard n Trey Palmer. Sterling’s attitude n mouth cost us penalties n his hands are suspect. Trey is a bust, he fair catch or run outta bounds. He has speed but not the heart of a Bucky Irvin. Receivers Godwin, McMillan, Evans, RMiller, RJarrett are all examples of team first unselfish players.

Excellent point, JustOneGame. Value added post, unlike Al.

ME13 deserves both the HOF and his bonuses$$. How many seasons has he restructured his salary and STAYED here to help his team??? Point that fact out, Joe! Me thinks the Glazer Boyz are seeing the light on running a ball club. Can’t do any better than Jason Licht. He and Bowles have an excellent professional relationship. And please, do NOT curse us with the word Culverhouse!! Bucs have had enough bad juju. Fingers and toes x’ed that Chris Godwin comes back.
January 20th, 2025 at 10:03 am
@Al – Evans only played in 13 games this year, dummy.

Screamin’ A. Smith is not bearable to the ears, nor anyone else who feels the need to scream.
I think Micah Parsons has 1 year left on his contract & the talk in Dallas was about an extension.
But Parsons & a day 1 or day 2 ILB in this draft would be a great start on the D side of the ball with 2-3 new in the secondary
January 20th, 2025 at 4:28 pm
MTN
Like the way you think. Parsons is the real deal. One true cover corner with the ability to stop the other team #1 would be great. Zion is close, he has 4.3 speed, late draft pick he continue to improve.
But if the Bucs simply had Parsons it would certainly make the draft easier. Not sure it would ease cap management however. But that’s Jason’s problem eh?
January 20th, 2025 at 5:01 pm
Yes, that’s JL’s problem.
Bucs are supposedly projected OVER the cap right now. I know they can do several restructures, but would it be enough? Maybe, if they don’t re-sign Godwin.
It may sound piecemeal, but if the Bucs think he’s still got it & re-sign Shaq, Bowles could move Parsons between ILB & OLB; 10 sacks right there, easily
