Liam Coen Not Among “Names To Watch” For Jaguars Opening

NFL Network, of course, is covering the array of NFL head coaching openings as if it’s a presidential primary.
Bucs fans are paying attention because Tampa Bay offensive coordinator Liam Coen interviewed for the Jacksonville head coaching job. He’s the young architect of the Bucs’ top-5 offense.
Tonight, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport shared a report on X updating the Cowboys and Jaguars head coaching searches.
Per Rapoport, Jacksonville has now interviewed eight candidates and Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn and Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson are “names to watch.” He said “both are considered to be very high up as to where the Jaguars go and what we like.”
Hey, Coen wasn’t mentioned. Joe liked the sound of that.
There have been no reports of Coen interviewing with other teams. Former Bucs offensive coordinator and current Ravens playcaller Todd Monken also is in the Jacksonville mix.

It’s a win-win for the Buccaneers.
If he stays and has good offense, that’s a win for for the team.
If he goes some place else, Todd will have his pick of up and coming
offensive play callers. The offense is proven, Todd doesn’t out shine the OC,
and the last two immediately jumped to head coach.

So let me get this straight, it’s Coen’s fault for the fumble? Make it make sense. Yeah, it was being too cute at maybe not the best spot on the field, but he didn’t fumble the ball. So this one game was supposed to define a full season of work? That’s not how it goes at all. Canales got a gig with less success, along with many other coordinators. Let’s keep it real. And no, I don’t want him to leave. It’s only up from here with the offense.

I hope he stays, but the problem with the Jags is that it is not a prime landing spot for the A-list coaching candidates with their owner-GM dynamic and the fact they will not be playing homes game in Jacksonville once the Gator Bowl renovation starts. My fear is that the Monkens and Ben Johnsons of the coaching world will turn down the Jags and then they go to their B and C list…..

It’s too soon for Coen to get a HC job. He’s not nearly as experienced as Canales. He’ll have to prove it for another year at least. I have a feeling that he isn’t a great interview either….Coen seems like a strange guy a little bit. But he sure seems to know how to run an offense.

If Coen stays they definitely won’t make a changes at head coach which means after free agency spending and heavy draft attention to the defense Bowles will still have one of the worst pass defenses in the NFL because in a passing league nothing is more important to him than stopping the run

How many teams defensively are/have been better than that?
With glaring holes talent-wise and tons of injuries in key defensive positions.
The defense has had it's struggles, nobodies denying that, but some people have an obvious double standard when it comes to judging him. You're not even trying to see things objectively 🙁

Ben Johnson has interviewed for 2-3 years and he’s such a first time overqualified head coach that every interview was a job offer he turned down and not the other way around. He didn’t forget how to lead men or interact with players obviously by the offense he ran. Maybe his demeanor is not what they want and he’s not a good fit for what they need. If you haven’t listened to his press conferences you should and based on that alone me personally i would definitely prefer him over Bowles some may not but that’s the way it works right

Not sure what level of interest Coen has in the Jags job, if any, but it’s irrelavant because his goal is to evetually be a HC. Starting out you take any HC interview that’s offered, if for nothing more than to learn how the process works & to improve your interview skills. It’s basically the same as going out into the business world after finishing your degree, etc.. If you decide it’s not the right fit, you just remove your name from consideration after gaining valuable knowledge that will serve you later, while also getting a few nice free meals outta the deal lol.

Great intel, Joe. Ben Johnson’s name seems to be trending. Things are really getting interesting.
Similar to what others have commented, I am thinking it’s too early for Coen to be a HC after one year as OC too. The Jags and other teams may be thinking the same. But you never know. Give Coen a couple more years as OC, see how he does, and then go from there. It’s a win-win for the Bucs.

Buc D looked better at the end of the year because they were playing teams in the bottom third.withe exception of LAC.

Look at the D against .500 or better teams
Horrible: Baltimore, Denver
Not good: KC, ATL x 2, SF
Good: Philly
Great: Detroit, Washington (season opener), LAC
Good at the beginning of the year. Why?
Health?
The rest of the league caught up?
Poor execution and communication?
Probably some of each.
