Todd Bowles: Calijah Kancey Snubbed For Pro Bowl

January 15th, 2025

How bout Bucs interior beasts Vita Vea, Calijah Kancey and Logan Hall combining for 20 sacks this season?

Impressive stuff, especially with a weak edge rush keeping a lot of attention up the middle.

The Bucs even found another 4 sacks from backups at defensive tackle: Will Gholston, Greg Gaines and C.J. Brewer.

Twenty-four sacks from that position, heck, that’s more than the entire Bucs team had in 2017.

Todd Bowles gushed over his interior unit on the Buccaneers Radio Network.

“They’ve been huge all year. I mean, Kancey, Vita, Logan, obviously Gaines, Will, all those guys have been huge all year. They penetrate up the middle,” Bowles said.

“Kancey’s really been unbelievable. Vita went to the Pro Bowl; Kancey should have been there as well. And I thought Logan had an excellent year making the jump from last year in the run game and the pass game. And those three guys are pretty much three of the top four guys in sacks on our team. So, they really carried us and they had a heck of a year.”

Kancey led the Bucs with 7 1/2 sacks in just 12 games. Vea had 7 sacks and Hall shocked the world with 5 1/2. Kancey’s 11 tackles for loss ranked top-30 in the NFL. Again, he missed the first five games with a calf injury.

Joe is a huge Kancey fan. If he could manage to play a full season, damn.

Of course, it will be a long offseason for Kancey as he thinks about running with Jayden Daniels’ white towel in his right hand instead of tackling the rookie QB for a loss late in fourth quarter. Joe can’t shake the image. Daniels stiff-armed Kancey in the backfield and ran for a first down on 3rd-and-2.

If Kancey made that play, the Bucs get the ball back with 40 seconds left after Washington’s potential go-ahead field goal on the next snap — with a chance to win or tie.

CK to the Pro Bowl? Had he played 16-17 games, probably. 12, no.

I hope he figures out his calf this off season. We don’t need a 3rd season with this injury.

  2. Boge Says:

Kancey is going to be extra motivated next year, scary. Nice to see Hall make a contribution and improve, hopefully he can take another step next year. I’m all in on trading a 3rd for an edge. Sucks we need 4-5 new players on D. ILB (2?), OLB, CB, S

  3. Nicholas Carlson Says:

Yeah it was an ugly way to go out

  4. Lewi Says:

This guy lives in the backfield, very disruptive, great pick

  5. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

I would have never guessed that Hall would have had more sacks than YaYa. Nice to see him continue to grow. Hopefully with another year of weight training, he’ll be even better next year.

  6. Jason Says:

Kancey is going with Vea this off-season to train with Suh.
He’ll be even better next year.

  7. Bojim Says:

“Hey! You dropped your towel.” I thought what hell?

  8. pelbuc Says:

Pro Bowl? Play more than half the season and make a play when it counts!

This is assuming that time outs were called in a timely fashion.
Considering that more than 24 second were allowed to bleed off the clock leading to the two minute warning, I’m skeptical.
Almost as if someone thought that the outcome of the game was a foregone conclusion.

A more interesting “what if” scenario(for me) would be… “What if the refs actually called that game evenly?”
I haven’t rewatched the game yet, too soon, but I can name off the top of my head at least 5 game changing, questionable or blatantly bad, officiating calls.
We did not lose/Washington did not win without the help of the officiating crew.

He gets over looked for Carter in Philly. Give me our guy every dam Sunday. Kancey numbers are better n played less games

  11. adam from ny Says:

that’s really foul…if kancey was running with daniel’s towel in his hand…

if that really happened i missed it…

    tell me it’s not true

  12. Joey Says:

Yet Todd Bowls and his QB snubbed Bucs players and fans from the Superbowl 🤔

  13. Jeff Says:

lol! He’s no pro bowler. Maybe one day if he ever stays healthy.

  14. Bobby Says:

I don’t think Calijah’s body is going to hold up for a long career unfortunately. He has been in league 2 seasons and already has missed significant time. If this happens again in Training camp 2025 or off season 2025 that takes him out significantly in year 3. That will be extremely disappointing.

  15. Saskbucs Says:

I also love Kancey but damn was it tough to watch him knife into the backfield 3-4 times almost immediately off the snap and come up empty every time. Credit Daniels cause if that was Cousins, or Darnold or Goff back there… Kancey had 3 sacks.

  16. Maryland Bucs Says:

Holding that towel was a shameful image

  17. Hodad Says:

    He’s no pro bowler period.

  18. stpetebucsfan Says:

I fear Calijah is playing for the wrong fan base. He’s GMAC or Vea with a nasty attitude as a bonus.

But BOTH GMAC and Vea missed games! So would you rather have a superstar for a dozen games or a mediocrity for the entire season?

Yeah you want a superstar who is durable. Players like Suh do not come along very often.

  19. Scott Says:

Dude has a long way to go until he gets to pro bowl or all pro level. You gotta do other stuff besides rush too

  20. Zman Says:

Go get Crosby to free up the middle. Hes 28, decent contract and a consistent and instant pass rusher.

  21. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

I like Kancey, and there’s a great deal of potential, but he makes maybe one above average play a game. The rest of the time he’s getting pushed to the ground or grabbing towels or just plain disappearing. Or hurt. Need a full season next year and some more consistency.

  22. Chrisonthecape Says:

Just more evidence Todd doesn’t get it.

  23. unbelievable Says:

    Daniels stiff-armed Kancey

The laws of physics say that this should not even be possible.

  24. Architek Says:

The defense is trash so he’s impacted by that outside view of his individual performance.

Fix the rotten defense and the accolades will come.

This was the worse pass defense in the league for the better part of the season.

He wasn’t snubbed. The coaches failed him!

  25. David Says:

Kancey in and Vea are beasts!
Hall took a big step forward.

Add an edge and if Yaya starts getting the QB on the ground… That front 4/5 can be dominant

  26. Hail2dabucs Says:

    Yes its true
When It happens I screamed..yup just like this defense ! Looks to me he just wanted that towel to wave it saying let’s all throw in the white towel & with just over 4 minutes left we all know that this defense will not stop anyone and they are going right down the field so let’s throw in the white towel , here it is Boyz . It was a disgrace ! No effing turnovers & my god , did Washington punt once ???? I’m gonna say I don’t think so..what the hell does that tell ya ????? Hmmmmm

  27. Todd Bowls Says:

Pro Bowl doesn’t select part-season players.

  28. DBS Says:

Coach Belicheat was just laughing at Kancey on Inside The NFL. Said that was not much of a stiff-arm. What he should have done was broken the stiff-arm then made the tackle. . Not try to run thru it. He had him 5 yards back.

  29. garro Says:

Come on Joe…Kancey was good but missed time again and he was not dominating O linemen lke Vea was. Not All Pro worthy. I refuse to even say Pro Bo anymore. It’s a joke.

    Go Bucs!

  30. FortMyersDave Says:

Logan Hall might finally be known for something concerning the Bucs besides ending Ryan Jensen’s career! Kancey has to figure out how to start the season healthy.
