Did The Bucs Just Fall Victim To The New Tom Brady?

January 14th, 2025

Legend building against Bucs.

The Bucs may have just fallen victim to the newest fourth-quarter killer on the NFL’s landscape.

Roger Staubach was the ultimate fourth-quarter comeback king of the 1970s. That guy was like a snake. Unless you had a four-touchdown lead on the Cowboys, that sonofagun would either win the game or have the Cowboys knocking on the door.

There was no more of a clutch quarterback until Joe Montana came along and did just that to Staubach’s successor, when he and Dwight Clark teamed up on “The Catch” in 1981.

To this day Joe swears Montana was throwing the ball away.

Though Montana and Tom Brady never played on the same field, Brady eventually took the baton from Montana. As Joe saw first-hand with Brady playing for the Bucs, the man was dangerous in the fourth quarter.

And while Pat Mahomes is no slouch with fourth-quarter comebacks, already in his rookie season Commandos quarterbck Jayden Daniels has shown he too has that fourth quarterback magic.

And NFL observer Mike Tanier, typing on his Substack “Too Deep Zone,” believes the Bucs may just be the latest, and so far the biggest dragon Daniels has slain in crunch time.

Daniels then did what he always does late in the fourth quarter: he led a game-winning drive. For once, it did not include any fourth-and-wow conversions, but he had already gotten those out of his system.

So are the Bucs going to be part of the legend of Daniels some 10 or 20 years from now?

Daniels now has five fourth-quarter comebacks for wins.

Is famed JoeBucFan.com columnist and Hall of Fame selector Ira Kaufman going to wax poetic “in the room” about how the Bucs helped Daniels skyrocket to fame and fortune by helping Daniels launch his legend when Ira is 100-years old?

If you have to lose, better to lose to an all-timer than to lose to Cooper Rush. Oh, wait.

    ROFL

  2. BucU Says:

    And Bo Nix…and CJ Stroud….and Kirk Cousins….etc…etc.

  3. Ds Says:

Let’s not get crazy they dinked and dunked the whole game and stayed in manageable situations

  4. Coltol Says:

Not taking anything away from Daniels, but most offenses abused the Bucs defense. Remember the Cousins 500 yard passing game. That being said, Daniels is very impressive.

  5. JohnJohn007 Says:

The Buccaneers defense just isn’t good enough and they got played by Washington game plan….very long drives and going for it on 4th down to wear out the Bucs defense.

  6. garbs65 Says:

Daniels is good, but it was the lack of performance by our offense that gave Washington the win….Baker and crew sputtered the entire game and the dagger was the turnover inside the red zone….

  7. Mike Johnson Says:

Give the rook credit. He is calm under fire and manages his offense well. And he can scamper too. Our lack of..a Defense who could contain him made him look even better. Get over it Buc fans. Washington just had a better team than we did..Period. YOu knew what we were. Surprised we made it as far as we did with no Defense. Concentrate on a Defense next year and we might have something.

  8. Mike C Says:

Yeah….. not earning any stripes against the 30th pass defense…..

  9. Zzbucs Says:

    Is this question serious?
A kid who has one playoff game won and you are comparing him with the best QB ever lived?
Is that what you are saying?

    Seriously????

Jesus H Crist Joe, have you lost your mind?

  10. BuckyBuc Says:

    Cope

  11. Mike C Says:

Mike Johnson, I disagree, the Super bowl team just eaked out a W vs Washington on its way to the Super bowl, and however you feel about this team it had beaten 3 of the 4 remaining teams…… how would it have been so impossible for them to do it? They were literally an inch from (the missed kick) from being in OT with 12 win team.

  12. ElioT Says:

Yeah, but the defense couldn’t get off the field the entire game, including the last possession. Offense with only 44 snaps at one point had given us the lead and then tied the game never to see the ball again (sound familiar?).

Team loss, but defense once again fell short in crunch time.

  13. shane Says:

I can’t believe you even put this question out for us to answer???

Daniels just did what the other 17 QBs did to us for the whole season, just dinked & dunked us to death. So, to even compare him to a Tom Brady is just ridiculous! I thought Cousins’ 509 yards against us was impressive and would argue in that game alone he played like Brady, but for the most part, insert any QB that can dink & dunk against the Bucs, and you will have a winning formula.

Ask the Detroit Lions’ fans after next weekend game, and I believe they will chuckle at this question, since they know how to get carved up by Brady. Nice filler piece tho…I really needed a comic relief after Sunday’s debacle….

  14. Patrick in VA Says:

It was a night game. The fourth quarter just happened to be way past our guys’ bedtime. For whatever reason, this team couldn’t play well when the sun went down

  15. TheMightyVH Says:

Didnt RG3 get all the same type of acclaim after his rookie year?

  16. Beejezus-belt Says:

Super soft schedule is more of the result. Only did it against 1 good defense with a backup quarterback. It was impressive that he took advantage of the situations, but you can’t count on that every year. But hey he will always get to play the giants and cowgirls twice a year. Soooo……

  17. K Says:

No a rookie just sliced up Todd Bowles bs defense for the millionth time. Nobody’s buying what you’re selling

  18. View from 132 Says:

    HAHAHA. RGIV.

  19. westernpennafan Says:

Enough with the rookie superman hype and propaganda. You sound like the controlled scripted fake news ESPN and the NFL channel. Stop anointing every kid that comes along and shakes the trees a little.

Our QB played better than him the stats proved plus he ran and knocked linebackers over.

There are two reasons we lost that game. First our defense could not get off the field .

Second our coaches again played not to lose as they have done all season of course they guaranteed the loss. The Redskins made third down after third down followed 4th down after 4th down and it was disgusting to watch.

We never went for it on 4th even once.

In championship football there comes times we used to call gut check time. Where a risk taken and achieved generally brings the turning point followed by victory.

The Buc’s coaches chose to go for the tie in the 4th instead of letting BAKER and Mike shatter the Redskins which they well could have done and you all know it. Just like they could have at KC if they had gone for two.

Baker is the perfect QB for those kind of situations.
John McKay used to say when you have a big gun shoot it. But the Bucs keep masking Bakers talent.

Baker plays like Theisman and Montana and Steve Young .

As for comeback Montana was the king going all the back to Notre Dame and Brady and Brees and Rothlisberger have the most 4th qtr drives.

  20. Scott Says:

Daniel’s has 1 weapon and a bottom tier o line. Dude is super accurate and clutch.

  21. Dirk Disco Says:

Meh. If anyone is going to catch up to Brady it will be Mahomes.

  22. Pewter Power Says:

You take what the defense give you and Bowles defense gives you 8-10 yards every play. Even the fan base recognizes his blitzes now do he’s not fooling the league anymore. Highest blitz rate in the league while dropping his “best” pass rushers into coverage I think is Bowles haters are just tired of seeing it. I would love you know how many pbu’s Vea, Kancey and yaya have

  23. Oxycondomns Says:

last weeks poll i chose not confident and it was because of daniels.

  24. shane Says:

So are the Bucs going to be part of the legend of Daniels some 10 or 20 years from now? who cares?!?

I wouldn’t worry about this now, all I see is the Buccaneers got a mutiny going on, on its hand, right now, with all these negative replies about the Buccaneers’ defense, this year.

Since Sunday night’s game, “JoeBucsFans” blogs have been flooded with p*ssed off remarks about the pathetic defense, deservedly so! We just all had enough of this! We watched team after team shred us to pieces with bad pass defense this year. In four straight “primetime” games, our defense got shredded by Ravens, Falcons, Chiefs, & 49ers…then we beat Carolina in OT, only because the Panthers blew the game, by fumbling, the ball while driving towards a winning field goal…then on the biggest stage in a “Primetime” game on the most watched NFL weekend of the season, the defense allowed a rookie QB shred us to pieces…we just had enough.

In 2020, we sniffed the Super Bowl once again, and we ain’t going back to futility again, like we did after the first Super Bowl win.

We have a great offense…just fix the freaking defense….please…

  25. Matt_PcAfee Says:

That last sentence is stirring the pot José!

  26. GoneGator Says:

    We had 7 possessions.
They had 7 possessions (excluding a kneel down at the end of 1st half).

They did more with theirs than we did with ours.

Time of possession was skewed in their favor because we couldn’t get enough stops AND because we couldn’t sustain any drives! We had the ball as many times as they did. Yes, we could have shut them down offensively but nobody expected us to do that. On the other hand everybody blew smoke up the offenses butt and predicted it would be dominant against a weak defense – hmmm, not so much.

Liam co-signs this loss…. Some of you can holla all you want that its not true and the offense is beyond reproach but you’re just delusional (or dare I say – too simple to look beyond the 1 hero, 1 villian narrative so prevelant on JBF and elsewhere).

  27. Warrenfb12 Says:

I didn’t think he looked that good. Just quick and escaped trouble. Bucs pass defense is awful.

  28. VOT Says:

The Bucs fell victim to having Todd Bowles in charge of the team

  29. Xristos Says:

If you mean league MVP for 2 games Kirk Cousins, yes we fell victim.

  30. shane Says:

Washington scored on 5 of their 7 drives
Buccaneers scored on 4 of their 7 drives

    Washington had 69 plays
    Buccaneers had 44 plays

Washington had the ball for 36 minutes
Tampa had the ball for 24 minutes

    Daniels was 24-35
    Mayfield was 15-18

    difference in the game:

18 play drive for 11 minutes
17 play drive for 9 minutes

Washington offense was on the field for 12 minutes more than the Buccaneers

100 extra seconds of time of possession equates to about a one point predicted margin of victory difference.

For example, if you had the ball 5 minutes longer than your opponent, then this would (all else held equal) translate to an expected margin of victory of about 3 points.

So…according to analytics, the 12 extra minutes on the field for the Washington offense would mean that the Commanders should had won by 7 pts…but of course they were happy with a 3 pt win. If anything, this was a moral victory for the Bucs’ defense, but it felt more-lopsided than that tho….

  31. Chris Says:

We’ll see how much of an NFL observer Mike Tanier is when the Lions curb stomp the Commanders . The New Tom Brady 🤣🤣, he will not last that long in this league if he keeps taking hits like the one McCollum gave him. Washington is lucky he didn’t get knocked out of that game. Defenses just get better ,the deeper you get into playoffs.

  32. Hogslyr Says:

I don’t have the stats. But how many rookie or back up QB’s have had career days against us! Seems like a lot since I started being a fan in 87!

  33. Bartow Buc Says:

Daniels played a great game against the Buccaneers, obviously. But I don’t think he’s going to hold up against the Lions. Joe, he’s not there yet. We’ll see what next season brings.

    Go Bucs !!!!

  34. Saskbucs Says:

Daniels does look to be on his way to being great. That gameplan coming in was perfect though. Get to 3rd and 4 or better and we got 2 downs. Play keep away, control clock. Worked to perfection.

Imagine if we prepared all week to do the same thing? Keep the ball in our offenses hands, they are good hands until it’s late in the 4th then they get nervous or something.

  35. Deuceswild78 Says:

4th quarter killer was untimely fumble and a defense that could not figure it out. Daniel’s played well but with a better offensive and defensive game plan we win

  36. Zoocomics Says:

@GoneGator …well put, way to see it neutral without going berserk on Bowles.

Regarding Daniels…he will never be the next Tom Brady because he’s simply not built to withstand injury. Great players figure out a way to stay healthy. Unless Daniels fully commits to the pocket, at best he can enjoy a 10-year career, with about 2.5 years worth of injuries sprinkled in.

I realize he has shown damn good accuracy, his but it’s those instincts to take off running that will shorten his career. To make matters worse, he’s not built like Josh Allen or Cam Newton.

  37. Bojim Says:

    No. But kudos anyways.

  38. GoneGator Says:

    @Zoocomics
TY 👍🏼. I know you put some effort into taking the path less traveled around here too. Appreciated your efforts.

Regarding Daniels. I don’t know how he’ll hold up long term but I see him as Lamar 2.0
He’s got much better processing and talent coming out than Lamar did and may be better than him now as far as im concerned. He’s a much better passer, much more touch and a better long ball imo. He’s very quick footed when he scrambles, maybe 2nd only to Lamar. Lamar is a better open field runner and will break off more long runs than Daniels but other than that I prefer Daniels already.

  39. Pewter Power Says:

Never is a long time. No one stays on top forever, someone always comes along better than you. Brady looked pretty frail as a rookie too. No one knows what this kid can be based on his rookie season. He could go on to be a flop but for the we’ll all everyone knows is Todd Bowles got sliced and diced which for Bucs fans is just another Sunday

  40. LakelandSteve Says:

I think I have heard it all now. Unless this kid stops running as much as he does I think his career will be closer to Robert Griffin III than Tom Brady. Daniel’s is a little too frail to make it long without a serious injury the way he runs. McCollum barely hit Daniel’s and he took off like he was shot out of a canon.

  41. BallHawk75 Says:

Joe is just covering up for Bowles again.

Any QB that beats this defense must be the next GOAT.

We fell victim alright, to the soft as butter zone defense.

Calling Daniels the next Brady after outlasting Bowles is beyond ridiculous.

Sort of like calling Jamies Mr Entertainment Americas Quarterback.

    #FireBowles

  42. Jmarkbuc Says:

Joe could slice through our cover No One Defense..

    Maybe even Ira.

Looks like silly season has started early.

  43. Jerseybuc Says:

    This is junk journalism.

  44. Rod Munch Says:

No, the Bucs fell victim to the new Matt Ryan, who fumbled the game away when it mattered most.

  45. Kieran Says:

Pleasssssse, JD is the next TB? Suuuuure, they’re not even on the same continent

  46. Xristos Says:

GoneGator of course Offense has equal part on the loss.
Offense made critical mistakes, Defense could not make enough plays and stops. Both share responsibility.
I m not saying Defense has a bigger part but honestly when you go an entire game without forcing a punt its a really bad look. Its bad.
