Chris Simms: Brock Purdy “Not Even Close To As Good As Baker Mayfield”
January 10th, 2025One quarterback has taken his team to overtime in a Super Bowl and his worst season was losing in the NFC title game, all in his first two seasons.
The other is still looking for his first conference title appearance.
But former Bucs quarterback Chris Simms would take the guy with less postseason success in a heartbeat over the guy who has enjoyed nothing but playoff success (until this year).
That would be 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy and Baker Mayfield. Of course, Purdy is the guy that came this-close to the ultimate quarterback glory last year.
Simms thinks the two quarterbacks are worlds apart and he would take Mayfield over Purdy in a heartbeat.
Simms joined his partner in crime, the creator, curator and overall guru of Pro Football Talk, the great Mike Florio, to discuss how much Purdy might be worth on the open market. For reasons Joe is not quite clear, a lot of NFL people simply do not respect Purdy one bit.
Count Simms in this group as he said he’d pay Mayfield much more than Purdy to play for him.
Purdy is entering a contract year with San Francisco in 2025.
“If I’m the 49ers, I’m offering $30 million. I’m offering $25 million,” Simms said passionately. “Baker Mayfield is making [$30 million]. You’re not even close to as good as Baker Mayfield. Sorry.”
It’s an interesting point. Purdy has had more postseason success than Mayfield that’s where quarterbacks make their bones.
Eli Manning gets serious discussions among Ira Kaufman and his Pro Football Hall of Fame selectors gang. And it’s not so much what he did on the field, but what he did in the postseason. Take away Manning’s rings and you’re left with Jim Hart.
That’s why it cracks Joe up to hear some people squeal about Lamar Jackson so much they pitch a tent. Yet Jackson, for all his regular-season hardware and viral highlights, has no more postseason wins than Mayfield.
Meanwhile, Mayfield’s personality rubs off on his teammates in a good way and he energizes the rest of the team with gutsy play.
What does Purdy inspire the 49ers to do, go get a vanilla milkshake after the game? Joe likes Purdy but he’s about as inspirational as a house plant.
Chris Simms on Brock Purdy’s pending contract extension:
“When it comes to the Brock Purdy conversation, I would pay him nowhere near market money… Brock Purdy is a good quarterback, certainly, but we know a lot of quarterbacks can go into San Francisco and look pretty good.… pic.twitter.com/DACWcf5qRy

Slow news day indeed when Simms’ opinion on a QB, especially Purdy is somehow newsworthy…Geez!
Wonder what TB thinks…
Go Bucs

Good for Chris Simms. He is correct. Baker is definitely a rock star on the field and does a lot with their foundation, community. Purdy has been good, but should not make more money than Baker. They both are on the Pro Bowl alternative list too. Baker won MVP last year. Hopefully we are in the SB!

Can’t tell who is better because at their level that depends a LOT on their situation. But Purdy is pretty damn good.

If the niners would have taken TB-12, they would have won 3 super bowls.

Jim Hart! Holy smokes Joe you are as old as me!

Purdy = Wentz. Iowa State product that did not do much in college either. Definitely a system qb.

Given Shanahan was able to work with the immobile Matt Ryan, perhaps it would work for a guy like Brady as well… but honestly, I think where Shanahan’s offense has involved to, I think Purdy was built specifically to run his offense. Shanahan likes motion, read-option, rollouts. That really wasn’t is not Tom’s game. I think Tom was in his sweet spot under Arians and his vertical attack.
That being said, you put Purdy on any other franchise, especially those that are desperate for a QB, and you pay him a gaudy amount of money and I think he falls flat. Purdy has had the benefit of growing up on a team that was ready to win, with an offensive line and run game that was really good, a great TE, and a defense that allows the offense plenty of room for error.

I’d like to see Bake take off on a couple of runs very early in the game, it seems to get him energized and determined. LFG!

And purty didn’t make the playoffs this year. Team carried him. When Injuries mount and he is needed to carry a little more. Interception . He is so over hyped. I’ll take Baker any day over that guy. Go BUCS.

Oh the original Cardiac Cardinals…. Jimmy Hart, Terry Metcalf, Mel Gray, Dan Dierdorf, and Roger Wherlie with the dirty Conrad Dobler on Defense. Don Coryell made these guys exciting.
Good times, takes me back to my childhood when football was game.

12 QBs make more money than Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen.
7 QBs make more than Lamar.
Even Burrow isn’t the highest paid QB, Prescott is (???)!
Daniel Jones signed a four-year, $160 million contract with the Giants in 2022, which included $82 million guaranteed. He was released this year.
Enough info, huh?
Really poorly managed NFL teams have absolutely jacked up the quarterback market. Lawrence isn’t worth his money, Jones was a joke and don’t get me started on Watson (who makes $13M per season more than Baker).

Carson Wentz didn’t go to Iowa St. Brock Purdy was a stud at Iowa State. If you didn’t know, Iowa State was a bottom dweller until Purdy showed up. Purdy, unlike Wentz, is a coachable young man
He’s probably worth the contract Baker has now, though Baker deserves a new contract. Hope he takes another team friendly deal; I’d consider him a discount at 45 mil a year, considering how much others like Lawrence, Prescott, Murray, Love, Watson, Tua, Cousins, Wilson, and Goff make.
January 10th, 2025 at 10:07 am
Hey dumbazz I know where Purdy went and Iowa State was not much with him, did he ever carry Iowa State to a Big 12 Championship??? NOPE
STUD??? Laughable.
January 10th, 2025 at 10:18 am
Baker won a playoff game – for the browns!!! They beat arch-rival Pittsburgh in that win. That is no ordinary playoff W.
January 10th, 2025 at 10:22 am
Baker fan, BeNice! If you were so perfect you’d have known Conrad Dobler was an offensive lineman. At least I think he was.
January 10th, 2025 at 10:22 am
When all else fails for the Mayfield critics, the refrain has been: “He will never be a SB QB.” Tampa fans now know after watching Baker for two years that is just more nonsense. If Bucs defense was just adequate, Mayfield and team would be going to SB this year. Still could happen with some luck. More realistically, if Licht can work his magic in 2025 draft, this coming season and 2026 look very doable.

“Joe likes Purdy but he’s about as inspirational as a house plant.”
Kind of like our HC?

Hey Bakerfan,
You sound like a mature young man, so let me admonish you before you shame your family online or in real-life.
First of all, you said Wentz went to Iowa State. He didn’t; he went to NDSU. Strike 1.
Second, Purdy was a four year starter at Iowa State, and those four years were the first time Iowa state had four consecutive winning seasons since 1927. Purdy beat Oregon twice in bowl games, including the Fiesta Bowl. So, actually, Iowa State were winners with him unlike most of their history. Strike 2.
Thirdly, Brock Purdy was drafted into the NFL, became a starter, and started in a Super Bowl. He’s about to receive generational wealth for his family. I would consider that to be a stud. Strike 3; you’re out.
Also, using pejoratives and profanities never help to build your argument; they are indicators that you are having locutionary problems.
Have a great day!
