Titans Plan To Interview Bucs Assistant GM John Spytek

January 8th, 2025

Assistant GM John Spytek.

Maybe this is the year the Bucs’ successful front office gets raided by other teams seeking personnel gurus.

It hasn’t happened previously, but at least this year there’s more of a chance. NFL Network reported today that Tampa Bay assistant general manager John Spytek will interview for the Titans’ general manager opening.

The Jets, as Joe noted, have the Bucs’ other assistant GM on their radar, Mike Greenberg.

Frankly, Joe’s not worried about either guy leaving. Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht has a veteran staff with other capable members, and Joe suspects there are good football minds around the league dying to work in Tampa for obvious reasons.

Joe almost hopes Greenberg and Spytek move on. It would be very interesting to see what Bucs — and former Bucs — they might chase in free agency.

  1. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Hey, I know a guy who works for the Titans. I’ll put in a bad word for him. Just kidding. How long has he been with us? Probably is time to move on and up.

  2. heyjude Says:

It speaks to how solid and expertise the Bucs are when so many teams want to interview their coaches and assistant GMs.

  3. JimBobBuc Says:

I’m more concerned about scouts leaving than Spytek or Greenie.

  4. SB~LV Says:

    Nice town

  5. BuckyBuc Says:

    we should get comp picks

  6. AL121976 Says:

I do not want to lose Greenberg but keeping both would be nice

  7. Teflon Don Says:

Hopefully the ghost of Jon Robinson at the titans facility scares them off and he ends up staying with us. Glazers pay the man!

  8. pepsi Says:

hes probably gone. theres really no reason to not hire Spytek as GM at this point – hes gotta be the number one option out there for a GM vacancy

  9. Jethro Tull Says:

I’d love to keep the band together one more year. This next draft is critical. They all are but given edge rush woes (which coach doesn’t seem to care about), the wafer thin linebacking group, LVD’s age, and Chris Godwin’s health, one more go would be comforting

  10. Buc king Says:

I like spytek he’s good at cooking the books

  11. HC Grover Says:

Just when things start to go well.

  12. Esteban85 Says:

After witnessing the in the park home run we pulled off in this last draft I would call your last line a bit of blasphemy Joe!

I think free agency might make one Joe very happy after we saw what this coaching staff/front office/franchise did for Mike in the last game.

  13. Esteban85 Says:

Once Jason trotted out Spytek to do the after draft presser I was sure that he would be scooped up by another team. The guy is just too well rounded and knowledgeable to not catch some interest.

  14. dbbuc711 Says:

    Not wanting either to leave

  15. toopanca Says:

Licht’s shtick has been finding talent and developing it.

In particular, he has shown a penchant for looking where others don’t and finding hidden gems.

Perhaps he has been riding someone else’s coattails. But, I think that it is much more likely that he already has the next man up ready to go!

  16. FLBoyInDallas Says:

It hasn’t happened previously? I beg to differ. Remember someone named Jon Robinson who got snagged away from the Bucs’ front office in 2016 by the Titans?

    Estaban

“Once Jason trotted out Spytek to do the after draft presser I was sure that he would be scooped up by another team.”

I think Jason knew that as well Estaban. I think decent people are happy when their subordinates grow and get to move up. I feel pretty sure Licht will be thrilled if his boy Spytek finally gets his own gig. He’s worked long enough and with enough success to deserve it. I hope he gets the gig he deserves it.

  18. Greg Says:

It’s time. If they don’t move on this year or soon, some of the guys we have been developing will leave to get their chance somewhere else. This is an indication of the fact that we developed good talent and people are noticing.

  19. Colin in Canada Says:

Spytek may be the most under rated person in the bucs organization. Licht is a good guy and maybe he deflects praise onto the guys under him but it sounds like Spytek has been the draft guy for the bucs for the last few years. Greenberg is a cap guy and I don’t think he would be a big loss at all.

  20. orlbucfan Says:

Licht is the head honcho in the front office. He’s settled here, and this is an enormous compliment to him and the entire Bucs organization. Same goes for the coaches, too.

  21. orlbucfan Says:

    Tech glitch bites again.

  22. Zwak Says:

This isn’t good at all, the guy is a wizard with the cap!

  23. Beeej Says:

During BA’s time, Bucs had the largest coaching staff in the NFL. Where do they sit NOW?

  24. David Says:

It would be a loss, but they could handle that. Greenberg would be a worse loss because he does all the finances and has been pretty remarkable at it.

The one person they cannot to lose and should do everything possible to keep is Liam Coen. They need to lock him up to succeed as head coach. The guy is only 39 and has a brilliant offensive mind. That could give stability to the organization for 20 years.

  25. Oddball Says:

Greenberg is the cap-ologist not Spytek… as David just mentioned.

  26. Beeej Says:

I feel better about Liam staying–Jags have requested 11 interviews thus far, including Raven’s Todd Monken

  27. Crickett Baker Says:

Spytek once said something like he was enjoying his job so much he would do it for a lot less money. It didn’t sound to me like he ever wanted to leave.
