Bryon Leftwich And “Total Bullsh**”

January 8th, 2025

Bucs Super Bowl offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich had a job interview recently for a head coach gig.

Yes, in the NFL. Leftwich was a Patriots interview.

Did Tom Brady give his good friend Robert Kraft, the creepy Patriots owner, an endorsement of Leftwich?

Joe’s not sure, but it will be interesting to see if Brady’s Raiders interview Leftwich for their new head coach opening.

Leftwich has been out of football for two seasons, and Joe had only seen Leftwich doing interviews on Washington D.C. sports radio. Then, two weeks ago, Leftwich was the subject of a long feature at the pay-per-view site TheAthletic.com.

It clearly was a staged remember-me piece to spark interesting among NFL owners. Bucco Bruce Arians was among those quoted noting it’s “total bullsh**” that Leftwich isn’t a head coach. Mike Tomlin also was quoted in support of Leftwich, but Joe will add that Tomlin didn’t hire Leftwich to be his offensive cooridinator last winter.

Per The Athletic, Tom Brady was indirectly asked to participate in the Leftwich feature but it didn’t happen.

Joe doesn’t see Leftwich as head coach material right now. He wasn’t good at scheming a run game and he wasn’t good with media. Those are tough hurdles to overcome.

Leftwich, however, has supporters.

Joe will leave fans with legendary offensive assistant coach Tom Moore’s endorsement of Leftwich after the Bucs won the Super Bowl in Feb. 2021.

“I’ll say this to you. I’ve been around a long time. Byron is absolutely fantastic,” Moore told SiriusXM NFL Radio. “He is a great presenter of game plans. He has a great rapport with people. He had a great rapport with Tom [Brady]. And in my personal opinion, Bruce has done a fantastic job of training Bryon to be a head coach. He trained him to be a coordinator, and Bruce lets him go.

“Now Bruce gave up playcalling, which was very, very dear to Bruce and he loved it. But he has so much faith and so much trust in Byron that he gave it up to him and let him do it. And he’s done a great job. And as I’ve told people, he just had a four week interview with the four playoff games. It is what it is; if you don’t like that, I don’t know what you like.”

“[Leftwich is] really good. I sit in on most all these meetings, not to check on him or anything like that. I learn stuff, too.”

I think he’d make a fantastic head coach for the Saints.

    Total B S

  3. Colin in Canada Says:

Huge Brady fan here but Brady’s lack of mobility limited the bucs run scheme. Brady wasn’t quick enough from under center to run the outside zone and obviously wasn’t a threat to run out of shotgun. He’s the GOAT but Leftwich had to scheme around some limitations that Brady had at age 40+.

  4. PSL Bob Says:

He may be able to run a team better than he ran the Buc’s offense, but I doubt it. I certainly wouldn’t take a chance on him if owned a team.

  5. First Name Greatest Says:

Lost respect for Arians any time he mentioned Leftwich for a Head Coach opening

  6. GenocideD Says:

    LOL at 2 thumbs up
    LMAO!

  7. Saskbucs Says:

I was super hard on Byron and he definitely deserved some of it but Brady was so immobile and so incapable of taking hard hits that I know it wasn’t easy.

Losing Jensen cost Byron and Brady big time, and Marpet for that matter. Whole different season and view we have of things if those guys were still on the line.

Having said that, for a whole season we barely saw anything outside vanilla route concepts, no imagination, no motion… most of that falls on Byron and he was rightfully shown the door because of it.

  8. Dewey Selmon Says:

He’s not any good unless someone is over his shoulder with a red pen. He’s a coattail rider.

  9. Kgh4life Says:

BL was interviewed to satisfy the Rooney Rule.

  10. Lol Says:

Agreed 2 thumbs up. Byron would look amazing in black and gold

    ROTFLMAO!

  14. Jack Sparrow Says:

I think we are all in agreement that Leftnut is a HC material for the Saints 😁

  15. Smashsquatch Says:

I will streak my hairy a$$ down Dale Mabry if any GM hires BL as a HC. Not happening.

Comment of the day goes to 2 thumbs up!! LOL

Brady was washed in 2022 with a bad o-line.

    Leftwhich deserves another shot.

  18. KABucs Says:

    Agreed!
    Leftwich to the Aints.
Murphy’s law says he will create a top five offense if that happens. 😆

Brady has a lack of mobility but that didn’t stop him from winning another championship several years back when with the Bucs.

Given the loss of Ryan Jensen to injury and Marpet to retirement was a situation the team couldn’t overcome. With a pocket QB, especially one who is 40+, you’ve got to have a great o-line.

  20. Tbbucs3 Says:

There’s only so much you can do with a aging statue at quarterback, Look at the Falcons and Kirk cousins. Offense looked totally different once Penix got in there.

If you watch the film, Brady‘s play in footwork declined from the elite level it was at (greatest of all time) in 2020/2021

But that won’t stop Joe and other Bucs fans from mindlessly hating Leftwich, who played a large role in the Arians Ring of Honor regime.

  21. jb™ Says:

The Falcons should hire him after they fire Raheem next January.

  22. Pewter Power Says:

Hire leftwich please it’s one less job Coen could take and New England would end up with the first pick of the draft next year for the new head coach

  23. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Leftwich might be one of those guys that makes a better head coach than coordinator. Don’t know. I do think Canales is one. He was a decent OC for us, an improvement, but Coen has clearly been better. But Canales just seems like a really strong organizational guy and might end up being good there, which sucks for us. Leftwich does not seem like that but you never know. I don’t wish ill on the man, I just wish Jose would stop talking about him. It’s over man.

  24. Beeej Says:

Brady was faster at 44 than he was at 24, I remember seeing a video about that. You’re still talking like a 5-second 40 of course

  25. D-Rok Says:

The ceiling for Leftwich is passing-game coordinator. As OC he was WAY too predictable and lacked any creativity. Not HC material, even if he do what he do.

  26. Beeej Says:

In the Redskins Glory Days with John Riggins, when it was third down and one you KNEW what was going to happen’ He was going to run the counter tray behind Russ Grimm and Joe Jacoby. They could get away with that because they were the best. Byron did not seem to recognize we did not have that level of talent, and no matter how many times you run up the middle for 1.5 yd it never got any better

  27. Tbbucs3 Says:

    Beej

Thats a false narrative, Leftwhich clearly knew the run game didnt work…..

Hence, why no team in the HISTORY of the NFL threw more pass attempts than the Bucs that year. Look it up.

  28. KennyBucs Says:

Joe talks and write a lot crap about Byron Leftwich but will tuck your tail(s) everytime you stood in front of him. Pathetic

  29. Oneilbuc Says:

It’s crazy because wasn’t no one saying this when we won the Superbowl. Y’all starting talking like this until Brady started playing bad once AB and Gronk left Brady went all the way down and no one wants to admit it. BL was the scapegoat of Brady bad play on the field.

  30. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

I completely agree that he’s a fantastic option for New Orleans as their next head coach.

  31. Rod Munch Says:

Go back to the game vs Seattle in Germany and you’ll know exactly why he got fired as the OC, and no one is seriously considering him as a HC, he’s just a guy filling the quota requirement the NFL has.

In that Seattle game, that moron Leftwich literally calls the same trick play only a few plays apart. That’s how dumb he is – he thinks because he’s got the memory retention of a hamster, everyone else in the NFL does too. Those 2 plays is why he’s not a coach in the NFL, even more so than his ultra predictive playcalling that had many people in the chat literally calling out what plays (not 1st down, but all three downs) he’d call during commercial breaks.

If the Pats actually signed him as HC, it would be one final, huge, F.U. from Brady to the Pats and really twist the knife – and it would be hilarious.

Oh my God, YES, he’d be a great fit for New Orleans.

I mean… oh no, I hope they don’t hire him, he’d run circles around the NFL… Oh no, I hope the Saints don’t hire him or the Buccaneers are doomed!

Guy is a total fraud and I doubt you’ll ever see him in any capacity higher than position coach.

To quote Leftwich “we aint use no logic”…

    ———-

Translated, “we ain’t use no logic” means “we didn’t use any logic.”

The use of double negatives has been a point of contention every since the Jan 2000 NFC Championship game vs the St Louis Scams when their low IQ local paper ran a headline saying, ‘We ain’t afraid of no Bucs’ – which is a double negative, meaning they were afraid of the Bucs, which is why they made sure to break out the checkbook and pay off the refs.

  38. dbbuc711 Says:

Yup. He should be Saints HC

  39. BucsfaninOregon Says:

I read here that Leftwich said that the pre-snap motion was unproductive. If that is correct, then he is a dope. When the play starts would not knowing what defense is being used- -even if they try to disguise it. I have watched Shanahan’s 49ers have the motion man on lead blocker for run plays- -effectively.

If he really does not believe in motion man he belongs coaching in the 50s and 60s.

  42. ManzielMadness Says:

That’s why Leftwich has been unemployed since leaving the Bucs.

  44. Drunkinybor Says:

Bruce gave upbplaucalling because he didn’t want to die from a heart attack. The fight in him died when we won the super bowl. It happens. Hecreached the mountain top. Thays why there is only one Brady. Year after year obsessing winning meaning everuthing. I think Bruce was checked out. Byron called a horrible, disgusting game. Dumb concepts, dumb scheme, dumb calls, dumb mouth, dumb dumb dumb. If we ever hire him again in the future aymt any point in time. I will rebel amd start a revolution.

Why am I having to read about nutcase AB? That fruitloop makes me pity Leftwich. Bucs sure did not need that imbecile to win their second SB, Brady or not!

  47. Scotty Mack Says:

More power to him if Leftwich can land ANY job (not necessarily HC). I have no animosity toward him and wish him the best of luck. That said, I wish him that luck on another team. He didn’t seem to have the creativity needed to call offenses in today’s NFL.

  48. firethecannons Says:

Love that pic of Leftwich and Arians and Jameis–looks like they are chewing him out for throwing a stupid pic lol I still hope good things for Jameis–would of loved to see him successful at the Browns, they liked him too and liked his gunslinger style of play, he was fun to watch in the game versus the Broncos–and the snobowl game just a month ago or so.

  49. C2asante Says:

I’d love to see the football resumes of all his critics. Because on his worst day, he is a better coach than any of you. Clearly no matter how much he accomplished as a player and Coach, he will never meet the #1 criteria for many of you here…. It is what it is.

  50. garro Says:

    Go Bucs!
