Jon Gruden: Bucs Will Beat Commanders

January 7th, 2025

It’s on to the divisional round of the playoffs!

That’s the word from the Bucs’ first Super Bowl head coach.

Tampa-resident and booted Buccaneers Ring of Honor member Jon Gruden (expected back in the Ring soon) is a Barstool Sports analyst these days. Chucky still has players he loves but rarely if ever mentions a player he doesn’t love. What kind of analysis is that?

Anyway, one guy Chucky really loves is the Bucs’ quarterback. And it sounds like true love.

“Tampa Bay, they’re dangerous. They’re going to win this first-round game against Washington, you watch,” Gruden said on a Barstool Sports show last night. “Baker Mayfield is a great quarterback, man. He’s a great player. I love Baker Mayfield, man. Even my wife loves Baker Mayfield. We got Mayfield jerseys. We even made Christmas cookies with Mayfield’s number on there.”

So there you go. The Bucs will win Sunday and face either the Eagles on the road or the Rams-Vikings winner at home a week later.

However, Joe must admit that Gruden has proven he’s not the next great Swami when it comes to game picks. Perhaps that’s why the Gruden “Shred Line” is so popular.

Right on chuckwagon!!! Chucky! Chucky! Chucky!!

  2. GoneGator Says:

He loved Kirk Cousins a couple of months ago and picked Atlanta to go to the NFC championship… 🙁

  3. Allen Lofton Says:

It all depends on which Bucs team shows up. If we get a few players off the injury list, could go a long way towards the next round. We need more more defensive plays elevated to Full Participation.
    Go Bucs

  4. gofortheface30 Says:

Baker and Gruden together is such a perfect match. Obviously we should give all the money in the world to Liam Coen but Gruden and Bake show were made to work together.

  5. Bucsfan Says:

When Bucs play up to their potential they can win against anyone. Jon is correct-baker is the ish.

  6. Ds Says:

Defense needs to make a play and get off the field.

  7. David Kilmer Says:

I am a big Bucs fan and Jon Gruden fan. However, if I could I would certainly ask Chucky, hey why are you giving Washington bulletin board material?. I am sure that will be plastered all over the Commander’s!locker room.
Come on Jon let’s not give the opposition bullets for the gun

  8. Zoocomics Says:

The Buccaneers are an anomaly… with maybe the exception of the Ravens, who have dominated us time and time again, I think the Buccaneers can beat and lose to anyone that’s left in this contest.

I have zero confidence they can beat anyone, and yet they wouldn’t surprise me if they can make a deep run. The key to all of it, we have to stay healthy, and Baker has to ball out.

  9. TheBucsAnthem Says:

The NFL needs Gruden back on the sidelines or in the broadcasting booth cause he’s so entertaining.

I’m no “Gruden lover” but the man loves football and it shows.

  10. 2 thumbs up Says:

Just think how far we can go if we’d have all our guys healthy

  11. Dewey Selmon Says:

I would let Zyon cover scary Terry on both sides of the field. Don’t let granola bar Hayes anywhere near him. Same if Dean plays.

  12. Marine Buc Says:

Let’s not forget that this “football genius” also predicted that “the Bucs will beat Dallas” 2 weeks ago…

    LOL!

  13. GoneGator Says:

We’ve been learning how to dominate and how to win ugly during the 2nd half of the season.

We have a good shot against anybody IF we play with minimal mistakes and turnovers.
We can also drop a turd against anybody on a bad day.

Not scared of anybody incl Ravens, KC, Detroit

I’d like our chances a lot more if we had less injuries and more talent in the secondary but it is what it is.

  14. infomeplease Says:

If the Buc’s offense can feature heavy doses of BI7 and ME13 early, controlling the clock with extended drives ending with points. And if the defense can get off the field on 3rd and 4th downs more often than not. JG’s prediction may very well come true! The Buc’s on both sides of the ball need to be dialed in! Focused! Bowles and Coen need to bring their “A” game! IMHO!

  15. SB~LV Says:

    I think they will too!
I am thinking Bucs wearing all white uniforms and let the Redskins red blur into the Bucs fans and stadium red

  16. Gipper Says:

Going to take complete focus to details. Washington will play like they have all year as an underdog that will surprise. Washington really well coached with a young QB who doesn’t play like a rookie. He is fearless and does everything well.

  17. Panhandle Buc Says:

Well there ya have it – The Gruden’s made Christmas cookies with the #6…we got this win on SNF!!!! That guy…

  18. firethecannons Says:

Just watched PFF week 18 “in the trenches” all about the Bucs, mentions of Wirfs, Goedeke and Cody Mauch. Very interesting, we already knew Wirfs was great but what they think about Goedeke and his run pulling is amazing! Mauch apparently has gone from being a bench worthy liability to highly grade and an asset, in just one year. Worth a listen on you tube.

  19. firethecannons Says:

Not sure why Daniels never gets hurt. 2 years ago, LSU played FSU and Tatum Bethune pancaked him so hard that he left his feet and was airborne slammed onto the turf. Kind of like a pro wrestling gimmick move. Anyway Bowles may need to assign him a spy. We need 1 or 2 players just to keep him from escaping. Would love to see him contained.

  20. Lightningvinny Says:

I like the way we match up,,,, Basically they have Daniels running ,,, need a spy on him (where is Devin White when you need him ) Maybe JTS ,,, he seems good at running around chasing

  21. Cobraboy Says:

There is no team the Bucs cannt beat in a given game…and no team they cannot lay an egg against.

    This team is schizo…

  22. Chrisonthecape Says:

Cobra, you are correct, with Bowles, prepare for a giant egg.

  23. Mac Says:

Has Gruden got a Bucs game right all year? He said we would beat the Cowboys we lost. Falcons…we lost…and so on. I would of him rather taken the Commanders.

  24. Mike Johnson Says:

The Raiders would be smart to bring Gruden Back.

  25. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Just four more W’s baby.

I have a recurring dream that it’s February 10th, the Bucs win the SB so I show up to read comments here and the celebration.

Of course mixed in are the obligatory derisive remarks about Coach Dangerfield.

“Yeah even a blind squirrel gets lucky and finds a nut every now and then”.

  26. orlbucfan Says:

Hey Joe, you ever hear of what happened with Jay Gruden, Chucky’s brother? He was an excellent OC with the Bengals. He then made the wrong decision to go to DC when that disaster named Dan Snyder owned them. Snyder is gone and it’s showing. I feel Bucs will win Sunday Nite. I could care less about ego Chucky.

  27. Couch Fan Says:

    @StPete

If the ReTodd wins us a Super Bowl I will never say a bad thing about him again.

  28. HC Grover Says:

No doubts…Those smelly commodes are gonna get flushed.

  29. Matt Says:

I think Liam takes a head coach spot somewhere else next year. I’m thinking Chucky might be jockeying for that OC spot.

    Oh God no.

The idea Gruden was a good OC or ran a good system is moronic. His offenses were middling in his best years. Want to talk about Baker returning to being a nobody and the days of the Bucs defense pleading with the offense to put up 17-points a game… ugh, no thank you.

  31. Woodenman Says:

Yea right Couch fan good one he could win 5 SB’s and you will still be here as a hater. I mean he has 3 Div and 1 SB as DC but I guess he really needs 5 SB’s in your mind to be any good.

  32. stpetebucsfan Says:

    @Couch

Well that’s at least a start! Stop saying bad things about him? Is there ANYTHING that could make you say “good” things about him?

How about back to back SB’s would that even merit some positiivity for Dangerfield.

  33. Jethro Tull Says:

If the O-line gets their heads right, play clean and physical, we should be able to out score Washington. No way the “I don’t know why” defense holds Washington down in the first half. MaLaurin has 100 yards in the first half, Daniels with 225 and three tuddies. If the OL can block for our backs and give Baker time, and we’re within a FG at the half, we have a chance to win.

    “I don’t know why.”

  35. Jethro Tull Says:

Man it took a lot of pruning to get that last post through Algo Rhythm’s force field. And it was all benign stuff. Wow.

  36. 727BUC Says:

Don’t post often… hardly at all tbh……However, I love my buccaneers and I read every JBF blog I can get my eyes on and I am so glad to see more positive than negative than I normally do on this site. 25+ years I’ve been on this pirate ship of a Krew!!! 5 FREAKING YEARS IN A ROW OF PLAYOFF DREAMS 😳. Let’s get behind our team and cheer like the the fans we are for an outcome that is unlikely for all (32) teams involved. Super bowl or not we are lucky to be in the position we are as fans to have a team that competes and has us all still watching in January unlike most other franchises. Thank you Joe to the great content and thank you posters for keeping me engaged and entertained!!!! Go bucs!! Let’s go f’n win this thing!!!!

  37. 727BUC Says:

Sorry if that was too cheerleader for yall I’m just stoked about the playoffs and glad we’re in the dance!!!! Love this site. And all that contribute my appreciation is yours!

  38. 727BUC Says:

…….. also been drinking….. hence the multiple posts….lol…. GO BUCS

  39. Shane Callahan Says:

Chucky is cool no matter what. Plus, he got the Bucs a SB Championship.

    * with Dungy’s team.

  41. SlyPirate Says:

    Chucky sucks at predictions.

  42. Buc4evr Says:

Chucky would make a great OC if Liam leaves. He did it before with a lot less offensive talent. The question is would the Glazers bury the hatchet and hire him?

  43. Bartow Buc Says:

I agree with John , Bucs Win !! And yes he would make a great OC but I don’t think that will happen.

Go Bucs !! Beat the Commanders!!

  44. Darren caputo Says:

If liam goes. Give Gruden the OC Job.
