Shaq Is Back

December 27th, 2024

Welcome home.

UPDATED: Bucs sacks king Shaq Barrett is back.

The worst-kept secret is no longer. It’s true. Mere hours after Shaq cleared waivers after the Dolphins released him, Shaq is back with the Bucs where he became the team sacks king and won his second Super Bowl ring.

The Bucs’ edge rush is miserable beyond words. Outrageously bad. And with the defense sputtering, in part because there is no edge rush — when your best edge rusher is a backup (Anthony Nelson), what can Joe say?

At least Shaq has a history of putting quarterbacks on the ground, unlike the Bucs’ current crew.

They might as well activate him

  2. JustOneGame Says:

Hope he worked on his pass coverage skills while he was away….

  3. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    LET’S GO!!!!!

  4. Citrus County Says:

Shaq should be able to do something the coaching staff appears unable to do and that is to motivate the other DEs. One would think it would be highly embarrassing to be outperformed by an 7-10 year older player that hasn’t played in 2 years.

  5. Tom M Sumner Says:

The Band is Back together!!LET’S FUKIN GOOOOOOO!!!!! Shaq =SACKS!!

  6. Usedtocould Says:

Might as well sign jpp, suh, and gronk while we’re at it

  7. Bee Says:

This reminds me of the time the Bucs signed Julio Jones…

  8. Dew Says:

Per Greg Shaq is going straight to the 53 man roster. I bet he plays Sunday.

  9. Bucsfan951 Says:

Can’t wait to see him drop back into pass coverage smfh

  10. Allen Lofton Says:

Shag’s history of sacks is behind him based on his last year as a Bucaneer.
Maybe he can coach the Bucs edge rushers like Yaya to close the deal

  11. Captain Ahab Says:

The Bucs offense is one of the best ever in franchise history, Todd Bowles defense is one of the worst.
All for bringing back Barrett, certainly not going to be any worse then what we got.

  12. Lightningvinny Says:

Let’s go Shaq!!!! Let’s go Bucs !!!!!! Let’s go Redskins!!!! (Or whatever they are called )

  13. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Won’t activate him unless they win?????
We are still not eliminated from the playoffs or division title if we lose……

    Figure it out.

  14. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    I’ll figure it for you.
We lose once and Falcons lose twice.
We lose and Redskins (TBBF likes calling them that) lose twice

  15. RVATom Says:

But can he cover the slot receiver? I love Shaq. I hope he stays healthy. 2 to 1 he blows out his Achilles by the 2nd quarter.

  16. Adrnagy Says:

Oh so it’s because there’s no pass rush , defense suck? I thought it was the HC

this roster is loaded with talent to win 12-14 games. …

  17. DBS Says:

    All of the above.

  18. Buc4evr Says:

Put him in the game, it’s too damn late for the practice squad.

  19. firethecannons Says:

why sign him to sit on the practice squad bench? He already knows the drill. Shaq>JTS make it happen!

  20. Heath Hunt Says:

If you fire TB then you have to get rid of LC too. The players will have zero respect for Coen if he takes Bowles position.

  21. Tony Says:

He’d probably still be an upgrade over some right now. Yaya definitely has the talent he needs somebody like Shaq there again.

  22. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

    YESSSSSSS

  23. Joe in Michigan Says:

Although I appreciate Shaq for what he did with the Bucs in the past, this reminds me of something Lovie Smith would do. Bowles/George Edwards are lazy coaches who haven’t developed any Bucs edge rusher.

  24. Tony Says:

Their biggest mistake was letting Shaq JPP & Suh go because other than Lavonte they helped that D run. So bringing Shaq back really isn’t a bad idea. I’d still take him or JPP over somebody like Tryon right now. Dude doesn’t even belong on the Bucs roster on Madden either. If they want to keep him with the team then just have him working at the concession stands or as the janitor or the waterboy.

  25. Mac Says:

I don’t like saying this but JTS is a waste of a player. He does nothing but run behind the qb play after play. He has 2 games left as a Buc. Maybe 3 if we are lucky!

  26. adam from ny Says:

    shaq is back…
    could never be wack…
    gonna give those qb’s a smack…
    he’s got the knack…
    treatin’ mofo’s like a snack…
    and he’s no new-jack…

    that’s right buccaneer fans………….we need a sack…!

  27. adam from ny Says:

this is just good all around news…

don’t know what to really make of it…

    but it’s just good news…

or at least “feel-good” news for sure…

    good for camaraderie…locker room…good stuff…somehow it’s just good !

    #LetsGoShaq

  28. Matt_PcAfee Says:

I’m guessing he will need a few weeks

  29. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Bucsfan4life Says:
“They might as well activate him”

They probably want to evaluate him.

  30. Brent Clark Says:

Glad he’s back, he can help for sure. Our defense has injuries that’s the problem folks, Bowles D is dominate… but if you’re working with so many backups in the secondary you’re going to have these issues look at other teams with same situation. We have to hope for the best and with the backups getting a lot of playing time next year…. WATCH OUT GO BUCS!!!

  31. Crack3rK Says:

Happy for him. If he can help (if we are) in the playoffs, even better. Love that dude! Go Bucs!!

  32. BAKERSBucs says Says:

Bucforever says that was a funny post still laughing, that is rare on this site

  33. Tony Says:

Shaq: “PUT ME IN COACH I’M READY TO PLAY.”

Bowels: “Sorry Shaq I just can’t sit Tryon. I just can’t give up on him yet. I know he can still develop into something special Shaq.”

  34. itzok Says:

I heard Simeon Rice could use some money lets sign him too

  35. Leopold Stotch Says:

    Welcome home, Shaq.

  36. Jeffs grandpa Says:

But but but you said he wouldn’t play for Bucs this year

  37. garro Says:

The Shaq attack is back! Is JPP around?

    Go Bucs!

  38. MadMax Says:

Welcome back….we’ll see….need the help for sure

  39. heyjude Says:

This is the best news! So happy to have Shaq back in the arms of the Bucs and all of us too! He’s home!

  40. bucnjim Says:

Great news but game shape? Give him a few plays to get the speed of the game back but don’t let him blow his hamstring out in doing so.

  41. Lightningvinny Says:

What does he need,, 4 sacks to become the Bucs leader lol

  42. Fishhawkbuc Says:

Great PR move for the Bucs as well. Let’s just hope he comes in for rushing the passer and not dropping into coverage.

  43. Cobraboy Says:

Barrett was meh before he got hurt, and under- meh when he recovered from the blown Achilles.

He dropped off significantly when JPP was gone.

I hope he’s rehabbed the wheel. This team does not need a meh Shaq.

  44. Hodad Says:

Just what the team needs. A washed up OLB. This is the best Licht could do after 15 games with no outside pass rush since September? Jason, you been a coma the last three months? A little to old, a little to late. Try better next year.

  45. #99 the big fella Says:

Hodad, what did you expect Jason to do this late in the season? Shaq knows the defense. If he has anything left in the tank it’s a win for both sides.

  46. Zman Says:

Awful. I mean, this is JL plan for a pass rush. He has to make an off season move for a bonofde rusher. Stop wasting picks and make another JPP like move. It’s a must just like a solid LT. It’s a roster staple.

  47. Bucben1961 Says:

Why not sign Warren Sapp too…lmao

  48. Hodad Says:

#99, what I expected Licht to do is not wait till game 16 to look for an outside pass rush. It was obvious long before now.

  49. Drunk Bucs Fan Says:

The fact that he is going straight to the 53 man roster tells me look for him to play about 6-10 obvious passing downs to get his feet wet this week.

I’m not sure why anyone would criticize this move. Of course he isn’t going to be a dominant edge rusher this year. The expectation should be quality depth at this point. If you want to be critical of anyone it should be the ones on the field that made the move necessary.

Best case scenario is it does take over a full year to get over an Achilles injury and there is a return to good edge rush play from Shaq.

  50. RagingBrisket Says:

    Screams desperation
    This is so dumb.
Why can’t Licht attempt to find pass rushers before week 17?

  51. Uhhmmm Says:

This move should have been made in training camp. Bucs could have traded for Shaq way earlier. Desperate and too late. Bucs made a HUGE mistake going into this season with only the linebackers they had on roster

  52. BA’s Red Pen Says:

    * an ancient history of putting….
    Fixed it for you Joe.

  53. Aaron Says:

You mean he broke his back lol

  54. BucsFanNC Says:

I thought we should’ve kept him from the beginning. Last year he was recovering from the Achilles surgery. Everyone knows it takes 2 years to get that explosion and confidence back in it. This move will pay big dividends Joe!!! I’m pumped

  55. Citrus County Says:

See it for what it is, a sign of desperation.

  56. Mike Johnson Says:

LMAO here. I guess we are superbowl bound now huh?

  57. Chef Baker Says:

Welcome back shaq! LFB!! Go Bucs!

  58. Allbuccedup Says:

A lose to Canales sorry team and a win by the dirty birds would eliminate the Bucs!

  59. budlikesthebucs Says:

great guy went through a terrible time tragic with his daughter hes on the level of ME as a leader this will not hurt it will help this area loves this guy

  60. Bucs4Ever Says:

    We signed another cheerleader.

Over under on his stat sheet?

    .5 tackle

    Hasn’t played in how long?

This is the NFL. Jason Licht is NOT a good GM.

  61. #1bucsfan Says:

Before he left he wasn’t doing so hot. Maybe it was the injury and fully wasn’t back yet. He’s better than what we have. Deff can’t hurt.

    I’ll figure it for you.

    —————————-
What happens if Bucs win both home games? Their record will be 10-7 like a lot of yahoos were predicting on here before the season started. There have been a few rumors that the Washington team’s devoted fan base has quite a few Native Americans. They want ‘redskin’ back as the team name, believe it or not.

  63. Aaron Says:

Both games hell no maybe this one but not the last one Who Dat You talking about the sucks naw

  64. CalBucsFan Says:

How about Suh, is he available for the next 2?

  65. Hearty Dikerson Says:

    – Jordan Whitehead
    – Mike Edwards
    – Ryan Neal
    – Shaq Barrett

Do we have a pro scouting department that ever looks at the hundreds of practice squad players on other teams that may have some potential? Can this organization just once look outside the scope of players that used to be Bucs? Because they “know Bowles’ system” is getting old.

    1. Why do you think Joe pays little to no attention to practice squad dudes? LOL

    2. This is actually smart. Look at the calendar. It is Dec. 28. Not Sept. 28. What should Bowles do, teach these guys how to play in New Orleans’ system in the three or four days he has them? The (regular) season ends in eight days.

Bruce Arians did the exact same thing. If you are going to sign a guy in December, he better have an idea what you do otherwise you are wasting time and Glazer Loot.

    Hail mary
