Baker Mayfield Passing Chart Vs. Cowboys

December 24th, 2024

“Hey Bake, whaddya think about going deep?”

It seems Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen opened up the offense for Baker Mayfield on Sunday night.

Joe has given updates on Coen’s offense just about every week using Mayfield’s passing chart courtesy of NextGen Stats. It seems Coen tried to go deep more than usual.

Often, Mayfield may try three or four passes of 20 yards or more per game. That’s not many and Joe is confident Coen’s offense is dink-and-dunk.

But it works.

Sunday night, Mayfield tried seven passes of 20 yards or more. Joe isn’t sure if that was because the Bucs were playing catch-up most of the night or if there were opportunities for Mayfield to take advantage of.

Baker did ok but he holds the ball way too long. And the drops and fumbles hurt the team. This rollercoaster of a team is maddening to watch. You don’t know what you’ll get drive to drive, let alone game to game. They can’t find any consistency either way, good or bad.

  2. Beeej Says:

If he’s holding the ball it’s because there’s no one open yet. You only get 3 tries, throwing it out of bounds seems to be the least preferred option

  3. ChiBuc Says:

From that chart it looks like anything >/=10+ only had about a 47% success rate (8 out of 17 attempts…as best I can see on the graph). It begs the question, why lean away from dink and dunk that got you a top 3 offense in such a critical game? Seems to me that Coen was nibbling on the “rat poison.”

  4. Austin Says:

God willing next year we have a high-flying offense under HC Coen and then an actually fundamentally sound aggressive defense under Saleh. Thats how Id write it up and in THROW money at them both if I were the Glazers

  5. Buddha Says:

Do not anticipate Coen as head coach. When has any team ever fired a head coach and replaced that coach with the team’s offensive coordinator? Never. Would destroy the locker room.

But but but… we need to hold the ball too long waiting for mikey to get open so he can get his precious record hahaha…..I hope he doesn’t get it now.

    D Bag .

All I know is when we get the ball, there is a good shot we are going down the field and have a shot at scoring. Mayfield haters sing on but Baker moves the ball.
Now when the defense gets on the field, another story. Seems like teams can always get a pass off and caught when they need it against us.

  9. Bucnjim Says:

The Bucs just reeled off 4 in a row to put us in contention for a playoff game. It sucks but the reality is this team was still exhausted from the trip to San Diego. Had to get back on another plane and travel to Dallas just a few days later. When you’re tired mistakes happen and this team looked worn out early in the game. Jet lag is a real thing and everyone here who has flown has experienced it, especially going through time zones. I’m going to give the entire team a break this week. Get back on track and hope for the best. Merry Christmas!

Buddha. We fired Lovie and replaced him with OC Dirk Koetter

  11. Gipper Says:

Mayfield holds the ball because he is always trying to make a play. He has great confidence in his arm because outside of, maybe Josh Allen, it is the strongest in the NFL.

  12. Zoocomics Says:

That bomb from Baker to McMillan was a dime. Most receivers will take that matchup 9/10 times, the advantage typically goes to the receivers, just not that time.

  13. Mac Says:

Buddha we literally did that with Koetter a few years ago. So don’t say it’s never happening although Tampa isn’t going to do it. Coen is gone after these next 2 games to greener pastures. He worked for McVay a good coach and now for Bowles a bad coach. He realizes this team is a sinking ship under its current leadership. Licht isn’t going to fire Bowles. Would bet anything on that!

  14. Kenton Smith Says:

Buddha may be wrong about OC to HC. But he’s right about something far more important. It would destroy the locker room replacing Bowles with Coen. Bowles is a good coach navigating a young team through a tough schedule and fighting for a possible 10 win season. Let’s let the season play out before we judge him anymore. Whatever you may think of Bowles he’s fielding a team I’m proud to be a fan of and that hasn’t shown one bit of quit or a bit of division amongst them.

  15. Baker/Bucs Fan Says:

Baker and Offense are NOT the problem with the Bucs! Other than Sterling Shepard needs to CATCH THE BALL!!

The Offense is averaging around 30 points a game!

How can the Defense not hold teams under 24 points?? They left the Dallas Cowboys, under backup Cooper Rush, score 26!!!

    Defense must improve..

  16. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

The only reason making Coen HC would destroy the locker room is because of his color no other reason. It’s as American as apple pie. Players will look past Bowles weaknesses as a head coach and make excuses for him because of it

I’m really surprised Joe let such a blatantly Racist comment thru. For Gods sake, what an idiot. So who wouldn’t accept Coen? Black players? And they’ll support Bowles because he’s black? Jesus Christ what a f*&kTard

  18. CobbtownBucFan Says:

Baker was under pressure the entire night. This is the worse performance the O-line had this year. It didn’t help that dropped balls, interceptions and fumbles added to the mix. We are lucky we were behind by only 2 points. But this whole situation would probably not exist if Todd knew how to use time strategy. I’m so tired of his clown show clock management blow-ups.

Joe, are you for real letting this idiot racist comment through? @GoneGator everything you said about that fool is spot on

What’s racist about it? Joe has spoken with some very powerful, intelligent people in the Tampa Bay area that think there is an underlying reason why people hate Bowles other than his coaching.

  21. GoneGator Says:

    Whats racist about it?

The guy is saying that that making Coen HC could/would destroy the locker room because he’s white and Todd is black. Is there a way to read that and NOT think it’s racist?

  22. ChiBuc Says:

Joe, the comment implies that black players in the locker room will view a Bowles firing as racially motivated. That sed locker room and allies will “make excuses” for Bowles because of “it” [“it” being Bowles’s blackness]. Regardless of intent, the comment strictly addresses a divided locker due to the coaches’s race. It is almost a Merriam Webster example of a racist comment…a comment attributing behavior of “others” based solely on skin color with a micro aggressive hint of the angry black man (those that would “make excuses” without merit or consideration of the fact that Bowles sucks as a HC/DC). Come on, man. Do better

  24. Cometowin2 Says:

Sure there’s some so called Bucs fans that want Bowles fired at least in part because he’s black but the great and wise majority want him fired because he’s incompetent and as stuck in the past and his SYSTEM as Lovie was.

    Fire Bowles and hire Liam!

  25. Baker/Bucs Fan Says:

Why all the comments about Firing Todd Bowles??

When I watch the Bucs, I see a team who is prepared to win every week. It’s a team that has respect for each other Top to Bottom..

Some key injuries have hurt the team this year, but I haven’t seen one game where they were out classed..

    Love Todd and This Team..
