Bucs Playoff Chances Fall To 58 (Or 51) Percent

December 23rd, 2024

Chin up. Put the pitchfork back in the garage. The Bucs can still finish the season 10-7 and host a playoff game.

The data nerds at the New York Times/TheAthletic.com say their software gives the Bucs a 58 percent chance of making the playoffs and a 52 percent shot of qualifying as a Wild Card in the NFC.

In fact, despite being tied with the Bucs and holding a head-to-head tiebreaker edge, the Falcons (8-7) have less of a chance of reaching the postseason. The Times/Athletic crew give them a 48 percent shot at the playoffs overall.

That’s because the Falcons face the hot Commanders (10-5) on the road on Sunday night. Atlanta closes with a home date against the Panthers. The Bucs have remaining games against the Panthers and slimy Saints in Tampa.

However, the NFL super computers say the Bucs only have a 51 percent shot at the postseason while Atlanta holds a 55 percent chance.

Joe can’t say whose computer models are more accurate, though Joe might believe anything NFL data queen Cynthia Frelund has to say.

  1. AUSTIN Says:

I don’t want to make the playoffs, that will help keep Todd around next year. lose both games by 30 please, fire Bowles, hire Liam, and lets move on

  2. LVMYBUCS Says:

Really and then what lose in the first round because Todd Bowles defense sucks

  3. Henry Says:

    What đź‘Ť they said!

  4. Les Says:

Enough of Todd bowles . Keep Liam, hire a defence coach .

  5. Irish Laughter Says:

There is absolutely no way that the Bucs don’t make the playoffs and make a deep run toward the Super Bowl. They will win the rest of their games easily, be well rested and Baker will bring the rest of the team up to his MVP status. So relax and enjoy the run. Keeping it real in Ireland.

  6. AUSTIN Says:

oh yeah, AND BACK UP THE BRINKS TRUCK FOR SALEH FOR D COORDINATOR

  7. AUSTIN Says:

I guess they smoke a lot of crack in Ireland lol

  8. MRWright88 Says:

Sorry- pitchforks remain out. Anyone think this team will go far in the playoffs will have to explain how we will stop with the maddening inconsistency and lack of fire that have highlighted our past several seasons.

Bowles is a good teacher, but with him as a HC, mediocrity is the team’s destiny.

Final note: Vita and YaYa should NEVER be dropping into coverage!

  9. Panhandle Buc Says:

I am sick of losing primetime games and really sick of backup QBs having career days against our “defense guru” of a HC!!

  10. LVMYBUCS Says:

    Dean is a bum!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. Mike C Says:

Cowboys were playing that game like it was the NFC championship and the Bucs and refs had to mess up so many plays for Dallas to just barely get by the Bucs, they (should) be able to recover from this.

  12. Brian Says:

Damn shame this D is missing a pass rush. Could you imagine vita and the edge DE brining pain. Bowles blitz don’t work most of the time, we only have Lavonte in LB coverage.

Also Mauch needs to slide to the bench, maybe find a center and move current one back to G

  13. JTHV Says:

The Oline was bad all night causing Baker to fight for his life and was severely let down by the dropped balls and strip fumbles.

The Bucs D played well enough to win shutting down the Cowboys offense pretty much the entire 2nd half.

The Bucs offense failed to rally back and win the game

You coach killers should be blaming Coen for this correct? Jesus

  14. Jethro Tull Says:

Light the pitchfork on fire with the torch and point it at the flaccid defense, once again showing bend over and break attributes. Against a lousy QB. Again and again.

  15. Mike Johnson Says:

I knew when The Falcons whipped us twice, we were done.We will be lucky to finish 9-8. Now we can stop the HYPE and settle back into reality.

  16. Ed Says:

Bucs should have been the team playing like their backs were against the wall. All week long reporters were saying “no one will want to play the Bucs in playoffs, dangerous team”. BS who wouldn’t want to play a team that gives up quick passes and lets statute passers like Cousins and Rush play catch with open backups.

Again after again the Bucs get into Prime Time and they play without intensity and make mistakes, drop passes, drop interceptions and fumble.

It’s the culture of the team. They choke up on the big stage.

  17. LVMYBUCS Says:

Paid Dean all that money and he has one interception in 2 years but Bowles felt it was a good idea to keep him. Bowles doesn’t know what he is doing and his defense is so old school that even the commentators know what he is gonna call before the play.

  18. Adrnagy Says:

Why all the blame on the HC. Mcmillan got the ball taken away. R. White got the ball taken away. S. Shepard and Durham and j.russell ball in their chest drop balls.
At what point is that the HC fault. These are professional players. Get paid a lot. Train a lot. Stop making excuses and babysitting players.

  19. Bucsfan Says:

We have Coens entire playbook and will retain it if he departs. We have a QB who is experienced enough to call his own plays-Why exactly do we need Coen? Once you have the recipes for all the soups-you just make the soup yourself.

  20. ModHairKen Says:

They had the ball with 1:42 left and great field position. And White fumbled.

So this is on White. He blew it.

Which is after McMillan blew it by getting manhandled.

And after Shepard dropped the ball twice.

A pathetic display by decent but not great players.

This is a decent but not great team. They lack anyone on Defense with attitude. They are an overall weak group.

However this finishes out, there are some guys that need to leave. JTS. Dean. Russell. Britt. Mauch. Shepard. Palmer. White. Izien. McCollum. Hall.

  21. FortMyersDave Says:

White should be benched for fumbling 2 games in a row but I doubt if he will be. However, the main reason why the Bucs lost is that Bowles did not have the Bucs prepared to play last night, the team was soft and tentative, both sides of the ball looked disjointed and Bowles time management blunders cost the team a crucial field goal before the half. Last offseason the Glazers said they expected “progress” from the team this season, yet have we seen any “progress”. This team is making more mistakes in week 16 than it did at the start of the season. Bowles soft zone has more holes in it than Swiss cheese and if Lamb was not out of the game in the second half, Cooper Rush would have thrown for 400 yards. This is unacceptable and Bowles has to be held accountable. He has to be fired or he has to retire, his choice.

  22. Buchen61 Says:

The bucs and Turd Bowles literally shiit the bed again in prime time and still fanatics on here making excuses and being absolutely delusional about the bucs chances of making the playoffs. Of course the nfl wants everyone to believe their team is still in the hunt they want you to watch. If Todd was the hc in Kansas City and Andy Reid the hc of the bucs this year do you think the chiefs wiuld be 14-1 and the bucs would be hanging on by a oubic hair. Open your eyes people Todd’s gotta go or we will be mediocre at best. Im sick of it !!!

  23. Bucsfan Says:

Baker Mayfield is Wins and 9 Losses in his last 9 primetime games and his performances in those games was Meh , but it is ALL the coaches fault? You guys crack me up.

  24. Buchen61 Says:

Bucsfan are you smoking crack… Baker played lights out.. is morons like you that make me sick

  25. Jeff Says:

Clueless Todd’s Defense fails again! Bowles has to go. This isn’t working. Atlanta is better than the Commanders. It’s over folks. No playoffs but this will end well. Bowles should be fired. Team is still young enough to recover.

  26. Buchen61 Says:

Who calls a timeout on the opponents 10 yard line with 54 seconds left in the half and its 1st down… I know…. Some loser named Todd Bowles

  27. Sue Moore Says:

Omg. Enough. Even if they make the playoffs, they are not a Super Bowl team. Change needed I agree. So frustrating.

  28. BucU Says:

I’ve seen this movie too many times from Todd Bowles led teams. I’m done with him. Carolina will win next weekend anyway to put this forgettable season behind us.

  29. Buchen61 Says:

    2015 ny jets 10-6
    2016 ny jets 5-11
    2017 ny jets 5-11
    2018 ny jets 4-12

2022 tb bucs 8-9… Tom brady at qb
    2023 tb bucs 9-8
    2024 tb bucs 8-7

Nothing and i mean nothing about his record says im the man .. absolutely nothing !!!

  30. richbucsfan Says:

A team this inconsistent has no business in the playoffs. Whatever happen to the. Coaching staff is up to Licht.

  31. Lightningvinny Says:

Well some of us do have money on the Bucs to win the South,,, and betting odds as of this morning have the Bucs the favorite -130,,,, ATL +110 (not a bad bet),,,
Speaking of bets the Bucs keep making money for me ,, although my big bet was three play Bucky rushing yards , Mike Rec yards and Baker 15 rushing yards,, Bake had 0 yards through 3 quarters but came through again w over 40 rushing yards,,,,, As far as the playoffs We need to win 2 and either the falcons lose 1 of their last 2 or Wash loses both their games ,,, (a little tougher w Wash beating Phily but that’s life in Bucl-Land)

  32. Tbbucs3 Says:

    Buchen61

Tom Brady in 22 was a worse quarterback than Baker Mayfield

  33. Drunk Bucs Fan Says:

Since we really have no way to truly predict what this team will do, just by going with feel we will win the next two games. One will be convincing and the other we will just get by.

It’s all on the Falcons to Falcon.

  34. Pmike Says:

Baker and his happy feet trying to force plays at the end of the game. Why did he not just protect the ball and take the sack?! Quick screen passes should have been the main stay against a defense showing 7-8 guys at the line. They aren’t that fast, they won’t get to the outside that quick. Bad play calling all night by the Bucs

  35. Licht4President Says:

    These comments are wild.

We win 4 games straight and yaw are all quiet.
Then we lose a game by 2 points and the head coach must be fired. Yaw make Woody Johnson look even tempered.
Rule of sports fans: loudest after a loss, but much more interested after a win. Don’t let comments mislead. Always more readers here after a “W.” –Joe

  36. gp Says:

At a minimum, three, and probably upwards of six blatantly bad blown or missed(ignored?) calls by the refs last night.

Any ONE of them could/would have altered the outcome of the game by themselves.

Add all of them together and we have an absolute blow-out win.

I have documented well my lack of confidence in Todd Bowles on these very pages.

    This ones not on him.

  37. Tbbucs3 Says:

Lots of blame going around for Todd Bowles….but very little blame directed at the main guy who’s supplying the “talent” on defense…

Jason has done a great job with the offense….but a putrid job at building a defense.

  38. Tbbucs3 Says:

And good point GP, the refs were absolutely abysmal last night.

No idea why in recent years the NFL has made the “rules” such a priority and now refs are starting to call every little thing they see and letting nothing at all slide.

Makes the product borderline unwatchable….that ref with the childrens sized shirt had more airtime than the quarterbacks last night.

  39. Lightningvinny Says:

Baker forced the play to white and it was a really good play right up until the fumble ,, was an odd play , white barley catches it runs a little w one hand and FINALLY SECURES the ball only to have it ripped away ,, Sheppards first drop was brutal on 4th down,, The end zone non catch was brutal (got to fight for it ) Bakers fumble was brutal,, set up 3rd and 40, even Coen doesn’t have a play on his sheet for 3rd and 40,, Bowles TO was brutal,, Payne fumble was brutal ,,, D over the middle was brutal,,,,
Really would have been nice to give Chase a chance to win it at the end

  40. heyjude Says:

This is positive news that the Bucs are in the 50 percentile. It could be far worse. The Cowboys have been getting stronger in their past few games. They haven’t been losing. Plus they were home, and don’t get me started on the refs. Commanders are a good team and hopefully will beat the Falcons. We could win the next two games. Still so much hope. Go Bucs!

  41. HC Grover Says:

The reason is The Stanks game. We will clobber the Carolina Shrimp and Falcons will get flushed by the Commodes. But then…..The Stanks….

We either back in by a half game or hit the bricks til next year. Check the stadium for Voo Doo dolls.

  42. firethecannons Says:

The playoff hopes and dreams and post season aspirations need to be put into the file cabinet and lose the key. Next game is the Paanthers. Nothing else matters.

  43. Let em bake Says:

Someone needs to teach Palmer to let the punt go to the end zone when your inside the 8….

  44. Pewter Power Says:

Why couldn’t they lose last week instead of on national tv? This game reminded me of the beat down the saints gave them last year around the same time so Welcome aboard and I don’t have to be worried about being viewed as negative knowing Todd Bowles wasn’t good enough to run the table. Clearly it’s not a talent issue because if anyone tells me they aren’t on par with Dallas I’ll tell you to stop watching football. All those posters that argued with the fire Bowles crowd during the win streak have gone turtle.

  45. Tye Says:

Bowels has had PLENTY of years to prove if he can become a winner as HC!!!!
His resume is an indictment against him proving he IS a LOSER at the HC position!

  46. TampaBayBucFan Says:

Only a fool would blame Baker Mayfield for that loss……he had a touchdown pass ripped away for an interception……dropped passes…..terrible pass protection….WRs not getting open…..untimely penalties…

A defense that put no rush on Rush……couldn’t cover receivers…..multiple penalties.

    Poor time managemeht.

He somehow got the ball to Rachaad on that last play only to have it fumbled…

    Sure……idiots….Baker lost the game.

  47. Boltsfan17 Says:

This is not in any stretch of the imagination a real playoff team. No f’ing way.
