Time Management Killed The Bucs — But Maybe Not The Way You Think
December 22nd, 2024Joe would love to find out what analytics specialist and numbers guru Jackie Davidson (her official title is vice president of football information) and Bucs coach Todd Bowles discuss on the coach’s headsets.
In theory, Davidson is offering advice on several things, including time management.
The Bucs never make Davidson available to media and Bowles will never discuss what the dichotomy is between the two, if any. But with two smart people discussing in-game situations, why did one of the two decide to call a timeout late in the first half when the Bucs had the ball on the Cowboys-10 with 54 seconds left in the half?
It seemed like if the Bucs scored, they would leave too much time on the clock for the Cowboys to do something. That’s exactly what happened.
On the very next play, Baker Mayfield hit Jalen McMillan on an 11-yard touchdown pass. The Cowboys would take over on the Bucs-30 with 48 seconds left.
Sure enough, the Cowboys marched down to the Bucs-40 and Brandon Aubrey hit a 58-yard field goal to take a 23-14 lead as the clock ran out in the half.
The Bucs would go on to lose by two points.
Whomever thought it was a slick idea to call a timeout with 54 seconds left in the half to allow the Cowboys time to score, take a bow. You may have just cost the Bucs the playoffs.
Nice job.
Merry Christmas!

Another par for the Sideline Stiff.

Bowles is a bad game management head coach … trust me.. there will never be a time when after a game that we won that we’ll all talk about how Bowles game management won us that game!!!
December 23rd, 2024 at 12:02 am
Bye Todd…i love you man but adios
December 23rd, 2024 at 12:05 am
Bowles can’t manage a game. He got out coached by Mike McCarthy tonight.
Jackie Davidson is either being ignored or giving bad advice
December 23rd, 2024 at 12:05 am
Todd is the worst in game decision maker we have ever had as a HC
Lost count of how many times he has made a boneheaded decision like this one
December 23rd, 2024 at 12:05 am
Yup.
December 23rd, 2024 at 12:06 am
Bowels, period. It’s time for him to move along. He is a 500 coach we need a winning coach. No one is excited about this guy as H.C. again it time for him and his old defenseless scheme to move on.
December 23rd, 2024 at 12:06 am
This isn’t the first time he’s pulled a bonehead move like this. I can’t wait for the day the Bucs tell Todd to pound sand.
Please, anyone who still defends this horrible head coach, please identify yourselves so we can all make fun of you.
December 23rd, 2024 at 12:07 am
When you’re playing against the refs as much as the opposing team…. Time management is almost immaterial.
I’m not known as a Bowles supporter, and yes, time management is one of his ‘many’ issues. But I don’t see it as the reason this game was lost.
December 23rd, 2024 at 12:08 am
Did you really thing Bowles was a legit HC????
December 23rd, 2024 at 12:09 am
I said this immediately.
Regardless the buck stops with Todd Bowles and he has been terrible at clock management in critical situations his entire career as a head coach. Even with someone helping him, it’s the same results.
December 23rd, 2024 at 12:09 am
That decision was the Houston game all over again. Neither learned from that mistake. Please get rid of Bowels and bring in someone who will fire up and challenge the defense.
December 23rd, 2024 at 12:09 am
I didn’t understand it at the time….you only call a timeout there if you run the ball & get stopped…maybe not even then.
The problem is Todd trusts his defense.
December 23rd, 2024 at 12:09 am
26-26
And why is a woman giving a man advice about football?
Huge red flag there. Women think with emotions over logic.
Unfortunately Todd has no logic.
December 23rd, 2024 at 12:10 am
Detroit playoff game anyone? Over and over he mismanages the clock and timeouts.
Last year he was afraid to sue them, this year he uses them at terrible times.
December 23rd, 2024 at 12:10 am
*afraid to use them
December 23rd, 2024 at 12:11 am
@Ballhawk what are you? 90?
December 23rd, 2024 at 12:14 am
Bye bye Bowles!!
December 23rd, 2024 at 12:17 am
Hats off to Dallas. They had a great game plan. Don’t let Buccaneers get the lead. Make them play from behind. That will keep Bucky on the bench. Exploit the safeties. Tough loss but Dallas deserved to win. : 2 point lass to Dallas; 3 point loss to KC; 3 point loss to 49ers; 3 point loss to Atlanta. Ugggh!
December 23rd, 2024 at 12:19 am
Pissed away a chance to have a magical year with Turd Bowles running the show. Sad thing is you can’t get it back. We could easily be 12-3 with a real coach
December 23rd, 2024 at 12:20 am
Bowles has a low game management I.Q.
You can’t fix that.
December 23rd, 2024 at 12:22 am
Somebody let Todd know McDonald’s is hiring
December 23rd, 2024 at 12:22 am
If you have these unlockable players, overpaid defensive backs and safeties 54 seconds shouldn’t be a problem. This is not a new defensive problem We see. It has been going on since Monte left along with all those players . Only when Shu and Hop were here did it get much better.
December 23rd, 2024 at 12:34 am
LMFAO…..
That “CONFIDENT” poll…….
I knew better.
December 23rd, 2024 at 12:34 am
Testing….
December 23rd, 2024 at 12:35 am
Back to back f-ups by the refs giving Dallas yardage….
They shut the run down completely and they shut Dallas down in the 2nd half…..
Bucs had a few missed tackles but that was about it.
Dallas’s kicker is good!!! Forced them into long field goals but they were made.
Dallas only wound up with a total of 323 net yards……
Think about that before you all are ready to kill Bowles…
December 23rd, 2024 at 12:48 am
Poor. Everyone noticed except the coaches. Pathetic. That and White and Shepard and McMillan. And the invisible pass rush.
No adjustments. No fire.
Now in a hole. Sad.
December 23rd, 2024 at 1:36 am
Exactly. I yelled out “why did you call time out with that much time on the clock and 2 time outs”. Sure enough came back to bite us. And the refs, are deciding outcomes again. i have never seen ref calls like last few years. We have seen this sht show before. So many reasons to not watch nfl. But i got to watch my team. Go commanders, Go BUCS!
December 23rd, 2024 at 2:07 am
Bowles back on the hot seat….
Miss the playoffs, Bowles should be launched – especially if it’s what the Bucs have to do to keep Liam Coen.
December 23rd, 2024 at 2:13 am
Another indictment against Todd is his defensive staff. It’s a bunch of ancient backwoods coaches that he’s comfortable with. All like-minded men with no new blood, no diversity, no creativity or fresh ideas. Just a bunch of old country-boy yes men that Todd grew up with.
December 23rd, 2024 at 5:23 am
The decision to call the timeout was probably taken by the same “defensive guru” that once again trusted his D to stop the cowboys with only 48sec to go in the half….
December 23rd, 2024 at 6:30 am
We will never get to any championship with Todd bowles. We will have new head coach next year. Thank goodness. Todd loses with his game time decisions. Time outs can’t get team ready for big games..
December 23rd, 2024 at 6:49 am
These mistakes of clock/game management are happening in many games. Coach Bowles, this stuff or whoever is making these decisions have clearly shown they dont know how to manage the game. It is criminal and frankly unforgivable at this point because iti is happening over and over again.
Nobody learns from these situations despite hearing after every loss the words WE WILL LEARN FROM THIS. No you will not because you make the same bad decisions every time.
Just of the top of my head last season at Houston. We were inside the 20yd line of Houston and the clock was at 48 seconds i believe. We had the opportunity for a 10 second run off but Coach decided to call timeout.
Why in the world you need 48 seconds (when you have timeouts left) to score when you are in the red zone.
Guess what happened next. Texans had around 40 seconds left and scored to win the game.
It is beyond stupid at this point.
But hey i thought this team was NFC Conference title game bound after the win vs Chargers. Media and fans raved about it.
Who would have thought that an inconsistent team with a Coach that cannot manage in game situations will believe the hype and fall flat in the next game against a bad and injury hit team.
Who could have predicted it ???
Maybe just a few that we commented that lets be patient and see the game vs Dallas.
This team is what it is. This Coach is who he is. That is the situation.
Yet even if we have seen this Coached team for 3 years already after we saw a dominant game we believe that we are something different.
Reality check. We are inconsistent. We cant play 3 or 4 good games in a row. We are who we are. Yes we may win in our day but we can also lose on our own against anybody.
Go Bucs
December 23rd, 2024 at 7:10 am
Boys had timeouts too and it was important to get a score there
December 23rd, 2024 at 7:17 am
Sometimes it’s mismanagement but really it is an issue of the defense not making a play, ya know kinda like what Dallas did when they had too
December 23rd, 2024 at 7:35 am
We have no outside pass rush…Shepard no go to guy…stupid penalties….weak at tight end….no recievers for the deep ball
December 23rd, 2024 at 7:52 am
This has bin going on since Bowles took over. Doesnt call timeouts when he should and now calls them when he shouldn’t. Your a HC this is easy stuff
December 23rd, 2024 at 8:03 am
Hey the real reason they lost this game was because defense couldn’t stop them from scoring. When they did it was to damn late .we shouldn’t have been in that situation in the first place the secondary got torched time after time.
December 23rd, 2024 at 8:09 am
Toad will not take this team to the promise land so get rid of him
December 23rd, 2024 at 9:19 am
Same thing with not calling the last TO right before the 2:00 minute mark in the 4th vs. calling it after the 2:00 mark
