Moving All-In On Liam Coen
December 16th, 2024It’s time for Team Glazer to get clever and creative and open its vault like never before.
No excuses.
Heck, Team Glazer paid less than $200 million for the Bucs 30 years ago and now the franchise is likely worth 30 times that amount. That’s no typo.
So Joe thinks it’s fair to say Team Glazer should have no issue overpaying to keep their stud offensive coordinator.
It’s time to make Liam Coen an offer he can’t refuse.
The superstar new playcaller in the NFL belongs to the Bucs. But that probably won’t be the case if Team Glazer doesn’t step up with a massive check soon as part of a historic and unique offer.
Coen has a dynamic yet balanced offense pounding out an average of 28.8 points per game. First-year playcallers simply do not do that. He’s achieving unmatched success.
Yesterday in Los Angeles represented icing on Coen’s cake. The Bucs dropped 40 on a Chargers defense that had allowed the fewest points in the 2024 season.
Joe sees no reason why Coen can’t be offered head coach money to stay with the team as the playcaller. If Team Glazer has to pay Coen more than Todd Bowles so he’ll pass up head coaching interviews, then so be it.
It’s a safe bet that Coen has a price. And Joe is confident it would behoove Team Glazer to meet it.
If the Bucs are deadly serious about winning, then they’ll be all-in on keeping Coen.
Joe doesn’t want to hear, ‘Oh, that’s not how it’s done in the NFL.’ This is the same ownership group that shocked the world and traded two first-round picks, two second-round picks and a check for $8 million to the Raiders for Jon Gruden.
It was an expensive and brilliant move that got the Bucs their first ring.
Team Glazer also is the same ownership group that paid tens of millions for Gruden, Lovie Smith and Greg Schiano to not coach their team. So Joe doesn’t think it’s outrageous to suggest Team Glazer should think out of the box and pay whatever it costs to keep Coen around a couple more seasons.
Every time Jason Licht, talks about Team Glazer, the 11-year Buccaneers general manager mentions how “our owners” give us every possible resource to be successful. Money is never an issue, Licht says.
Joe sure hopes that streak doesn’t end in February.
December 16th, 2024 at 3:51 am
Liam is staying….it should be obvious…but i mean its up to him….lets just say we’ll make it easy to stay
December 16th, 2024 at 3:54 am
yes pay the man…and let him be next man up as HC
December 16th, 2024 at 4:05 am
Pay the man, make him assistant HC and take over when Bowles is done with his time in Tampa.
December 16th, 2024 at 4:22 am
Joe, I think the hard thing to match is the guaranteed money of a new HC. Are you saying we should match an offer of say… $10M for 5 years ($50M) to keep our OC?
That would certainly be outside the box. Coen has to have a price to prevent him from interviewing in this cycle. What is that price? $10 million, $15 million. $20 million? That sure would be a nice Christmas present for the the Coens and legions of Bucs fans. You got $50+ million invested in Mayfield and Evans next year. Maximizing seems like a sound investment.–Joe
Out of respect for Bowles, who fans take for granted, I feel like you have to make sure Bowles gets as least a million more than his OC, even if that means a raise.
December 16th, 2024 at 4:25 am
Agree with everyone. Keeping Coen is Job 1 for the Glazers. They need to do whatever it takes to keep him. The guy is 100x better than Canales was.
December 16th, 2024 at 4:31 am
This is the Dirk Koeter situation. Pay the man and keep him — even if you have to make him HC.
December 16th, 2024 at 4:32 am
Fair or not, always in the back of my mind is the celebration when Mike Smith stayed on as defensive coordinator. Things kind of went downhill from there. –Hoping for the best with this situation.
December 16th, 2024 at 4:53 am
Sounds good, but if he really wants to be a head coach there is nothing that can stop him. This is what these guys dream about.
December 16th, 2024 at 5:02 am
Co-Head coach HUGE $$$ RAISE takes over when Bowles retires or gets forced out like Arians did…
December 16th, 2024 at 6:18 am
I hope he doesn’t go to Atlanta. Wouldn’t that be a bit**
December 16th, 2024 at 6:20 am
Make it happen, Mr. Glazer(s). Please.
December 16th, 2024 at 6:40 am
This article is a best-case scenario for the Bucs… everything is predicated on how we close out the season. Nothing will be easy for us, because we manage to blow out good football teams like Washington, Philidelphia, Lions and now the Chargers, smh… and then play down crap teams. Man, you look back at those close games and man your start to wonder we should have 10 freaking wins probably by now. Damn.
Anyways, if you pay attention to all things Bucs, especially the post-game locker-room speeches, this is Bowles team, this team loves him, I do believe that. It’s hard to believe that there wouldn’t be a massive shakeup if we manage 10+ wins this season and we dump Bowles for Coen out of desperation… we can skip that “these guys are professionals’ crap and they’ll figure it out”, this locker room would take a hit. Lavonte would certainly be done/retired. I just think we’re closer to our next big run with Bowles, than without. Casual fans are underestimating that these players are not tailored for just any defense, i.e. you put this same group in a Saleh 4-3 defense, no blitzing, this def would not just have a couple of horrible games, it would be agonizing to watch. Couple of new pieces next season, and this defense will be closer to 2020 form. I say close, because Suh, JPP, Shaq…pretty damn hard to replace that kind of talent.
December 16th, 2024 at 6:42 am
Stop the irrational exuberance. The last two weeks, all the Joes did was claim the sky was falling because they did not run up the score on two bad teams. Coen was the OC then, too. Nobody claimed the sky was falling on the offense. Every post is archived here for all to see. –Joe
Yes, they need to keep Coen but nonsense like co-HC and paying him more than Bowles is silly.
Does Coen want to make the same mistake as Canales and take the first job offered? Canales will be fired late next year.
Coen would be smart to take huge pay raise and hang out for another year. There will be openings every year. He does not want the Giants or Jets or the Bears. Or the Raiders, with the clown show that Deion’s kids will add to it.
December 16th, 2024 at 6:58 am
We can’t have another new offense next year. Glazers need to do whatever it takes to keep him. Move Todd up to Arians job with a pay raise, and promote Liam to H.C..
December 16th, 2024 at 7:00 am
Hey, is there a universe where Todd Bowles takes Licht and Liam
To Hooters for some beer and wings (and things) and says, “Liam, I want to make a proposal. If you stick around for one more year, I’ll retire after. I still want to coach and Instill love the Bucs. How about you become head coach and hire me as your Defensive Coordinator. I’d be entirely happy just focusing on my side of the ball and supporting you however you need me to. I mean, Liam…Jason…why not? Why not us?”
Thoughts?
(And Todd would if course know that would come with a pay decrease. He won’t care. He doesn’t strike me as being a slave to the once-almighty dollar.)
December 16th, 2024 at 7:01 am
“I still” love the Bucs… (typo)
December 16th, 2024 at 7:17 am
I have faith in the Glazer Family that they have already been mauling this situation over in their minds!!! The Lions found a way to keep Ben Johnson with their organization I just feel the Glazers know special talent when they see it and WON’T let Liam get away without offering him an incentive to stay in Tampa 🚩🏴☠️🚩☠️🏈💨💨‼️
December 16th, 2024 at 7:25 am
Unless Bowles retires Coen will leave. Bowles is one of the lowest paid head coaches in the NFL. Coen will be a head coach somewhere NFL or College maybe Bowles will retire.
December 16th, 2024 at 7:32 am
make him assistant head coach and I think rules are he cant leave? I believe he can leave only if offered a head coaching job, but if he is promoted ?
dont know if he only has a 1 year contract? which would make this point void. although if offered enough money, and promotion….. who knows
December 16th, 2024 at 7:36 am
I stated this before but this will be a major distraction if Bucs do make playoffs. Him leaving for interviews at other places while playoffs would be going on. I think NFL needs to change the rule that you can’t start any of this until after the Super Bowl.
Hope Glazers Pony up. Bucs fans don’t want to lose him!
December 16th, 2024 at 7:37 am
I SERIOUSLY doubt Liam is interested in going back to college
December 16th, 2024 at 7:40 am
It’s a no-brainer.
December 16th, 2024 at 7:49 am
lol so simple right yea he’ll take head coach money unless he actually wants to be a head coach and They’d have to pay Coen not to do head coaching interviews because any team that wants him will match the Glazers. Everyone knows the offense of the heartbeat of the Bucs and he is in high demand.
December 16th, 2024 at 7:50 am
Offense sells tickets. Offense gets you notoriety and publicity- which the Glazers love.
There’s an opening in New Orleans. Now THAT would suck.
Pay the man. Offend Bowles? Who cares? If he doesn’t like it he can retire.
Without Coen’s offense, this team would be sitting at 4-5 wins, thanks to a defense that more often than not, sucks.
December 16th, 2024 at 7:51 am
Why not…it doesn’t count against the cap and it’s not our money
December 16th, 2024 at 7:52 am
Sure do miss those 1st down, run up the gut for no gain calls from Coen’s predecessor…NOT !
December 16th, 2024 at 7:52 am
When does Jamaal Dean get drug tested for his interception?
Well played.–Joe

December 16th, 2024 at 7:53 am
Anything can be done in the NFL. Things change daily.
Yes, get Coen to stay and bump Todd up too. Jim Harbaugh and others are making so much more than Todd. He has been doing a good job too. Also make sure Godwin stays. This also gives Coen the chance to grow more and be there for when Todd does retire. However, in the end, it’s up to Coen if he wants to interview for head coaching jobs. The Glazers can offer more, but you never know what Coen will be feeling at the end of the season.
December 16th, 2024 at 7:57 am
Thanks Joe! Yeah, you make a good point about Bake and Mike next year.
December 16th, 2024 at 8:02 am
Agree with Mac. And pay him. Like Joe said, even if it means Bowles gets a raise. Cant be sure we’d find another good OC next year.
December 16th, 2024 at 8:20 am
You simply cannot let an OC like this leave the organization.
And why would he want to leave Tampa?
Great receivers, great RBs, tough QB that he helped have his best season in the NFL.
Sign Coen to a big dollar deal to stay and link it to Bowles retirement after his contract expires or earlier.
Guarantee that Coen is the next HC here.
Pay him, pay that man his money! LFG!!!
December 16th, 2024 at 8:37 am
100% agree with Joe. Bucs must keep Liam Coen at all costs.
December 16th, 2024 at 8:47 am
Todd hired Canales and Coen, just go get another one if need be. Canales should be available again by the end of next season and Coen probably the season after that.
December 16th, 2024 at 8:55 am
Everyone is dreaming if they don’t think this guy will be a head coach somewhere next year. This guys offensive play calling is ELITE and that is being talked about everywhere, with every franchise.
Will suck to lose the guy, but if it ain’t here, it’s gonna be somewhere
December 16th, 2024 at 8:57 am
I fully expect the Glazer family to do everything they possibly can to keep Coen onboard. Despite what some write, on here and elsewhere, as fans we are very lucky to have them as owners of this team. Simple as that.
December 16th, 2024 at 9:02 am
Not only have the Glazers thought outside the box on all the above mentioned bold moves by Joe, they also green lighted us having the first male cheerleader.
If that’s not the ultimate “anti-box” move than I don’t know what is.
😀🤮
December 16th, 2024 at 9:44 am
I’m firing Bowles and giving Coen the HC job. Sorry but we can find a defensive coordinator anyday, we can’t find a bright offensive mind like Coen anywhere else. Bowles can easily be replaced as will his staff.
December 16th, 2024 at 9:55 am
@Mondy
Completely agree! Bucs have a top 3 offense and 28th ranked defense. The move the Bucs ownership and GM should make at the end of the season is very obvious.
December 16th, 2024 at 9:55 am
If it were my team, I’d present Todd Bowles with a really nice “permanent vacation” package……time for Cohen to be the next head coach!
December 16th, 2024 at 9:58 am
Keep your dawn hands off my coordinator. Can’t we franchise tag the OC
December 16th, 2024 at 10:01 am
This all said, I think there should be an NFL rule change forbidding an offensive or defensive coordinator from being hired away for ANY position that Neil after their second season.
December 16th, 2024 at 10:09 am
All the Einsteins who want to make Coen the HC or “Co HC” (whatever that means) clearly dont understand that theres a huge difference between offensive coordinator and NFL head coach…..
Todd Bowels is the Bucs head coach bozos and isnt going anywhere
December 16th, 2024 at 11:02 am
The disrespect for the current Head Coach who hired a hot OC who did so well he got a head coaching opportunity, then went out and hired another OC who is exceeding expectations is appalling. Despite what you think of Todd Bowles he appears to be adept at hiring talented assistants. I’d trust him to do it again if the OC leaves to pursue his dreams. I know many players personally and if you think for one minute gross disrespect of a successful Black Head Coach to reward a white subordinate after one year will not upset team chemistry and spur some players to leave and others to not come here, you are delusional.
??? First, none of what is done behind the scenes to keep Coen has to be made public. There’s no salary cap or public disclosure for coaches. Second, why wouldn’t Todd Bowles want the Glazers to do anything possible to help Coen keep calling plays. Third, the players Joe knows would applaud any player or coach of any race getting a fat bag. It’s hard to do. –Joe
December 16th, 2024 at 11:43 am
Assistant Head Coach with a deal to takeover for Todd next year when he retires
December 16th, 2024 at 11:58 am
Bowles retiring would solve the problem!
December 16th, 2024 at 12:00 pm
Team Glazer never paid for their half of the stadium either. NFL teams are like getting to privately own utilities.
December 16th, 2024 at 12:03 pm
Dan-O is already blowing Cohen up on ESPN this morning, as a HOT HC hire (along with Brady in Buffalo) for next season. The Bucs MUST do everything and ANYTHING they have to do, in order to keep HIM. And, this includes making another “Bruce-Bowles” move, by forcing Bowles out. 💯 It just is what it is. Cohen is more important moving forward (especially for Baker), & is about 25-YEARS younger. It’s a no-brainer. You just CAN’T afford to lose him. And, that’s the bottomline. PERIOD.
December 16th, 2024 at 12:07 pm
Bowles chose Canales and he chose Coen. His defense has been crushed by injuries. For crying out loud, give the guy some credit. He makes the game plans. He runs the locker room. Never makes excuses. Sure he makes mistakes but the animosity toward him is really nuts. This is not a Super Bowl roster. Still this team and this coach has no quit. They fight like hell. Go back and read what Detroit’s coach said after his team lost to the Buccaneers.
December 16th, 2024 at 12:10 pm
It comes down to WHO is ‘easier’ to replace… A 61-year old DEFENSIVE Coordinator, orrrr a 39-year old ‘up & coming’ guru of an OFFENSIVE Coordinator and Playcaller extraordinaire!? Hmmmmm… Give me about 0.2 seconds to figure that one out!!!! 💯 NO. BRAINER.
December 16th, 2024 at 12:13 pm
If Coen does get a HC job, maybe NFL teams should just start letting Todd Bowles pick their coaches?
December 16th, 2024 at 12:28 pm
Don’t think anyone would use the injuries excuse to defend Todd Bowles defensive rankings after yesterdays win but there it is. He’s a defensive coordinator of course he has 4-5 good games a year but the problem is it’s a 17 week schedule. There’s a difference between head coach and offensive coordinator is a dumb argument because uh Everyone has to be promoted to head coach.
December 16th, 2024 at 12:36 pm
Coen’s value is significantly greater than Bowels value…
Keep Coen at all cost!
